appetite for destruction is one of the greatest rock records ever but it couldve been an album that couldve rivaled even micheal jacksons thriller
this couldve been the tracklisting

1.welcome to the jungle
2.its so easy
3.nightrain
4.out ta get me
5.mr brownstone
6.paradise city
7.my michelle
8.back off bitch
9.sweet child o mine
10.dont cry
11.november rain

u wouldve had 2 more top 5 singles to go with pc wttj and scom the way records sold in the late 80's

but they saved dc and nr for the illusions

but how much greater would afd had been like this?

what if questions.. haha .... well that may well be, but i doubt there would have been 2 more singles .. that ultimately means some great single songs would've just stayed great album songs... AFD. well someone said once that mastepieces are equal in value.. hmm. not really, but it's hard to imagine AFD being better... for sure one of the top5 albums ever... probably the best .. saying "probably" is just to do justice to Zoso, Sgt Pepper or THe Wall... what if CD is just a best of collection of the last 10 years..  Cool

I agree with Izzy. Plus, if those songs had been on it, the album would have had to have been delayed until September, 1991. They were nowhere near finished the right way when Appetite For Destruction came out.

As far as I know, LPs can have about 50 minutes of music on them. In 1987 people were buying LPs, not CDs.

Your tracklist is about 62 minutes.

No way would they release a double-album as their debut.

Appetite is the greatest album of all time and you want to fuck it up by tinkering with it.

The 3 songs you take from UYI's belong where they are.  They don't fit inside AFD.

You're obviously bored to lunacy.

10.dont cry
11.november rain

Back Off Bitch, I can see how it might fit.  But not Dont Cry and NR!

AFD is the epitome of balls-out, hard-rocking dirt, grit and sleaze!

NR, as much I love it, is not raw.  It doesnt scream of the streets (yes, I am aware that Axl conceived NR when he was living on the streets), but the production values dont fit the AFD style.

Anyway, this album was lightning in a bottle, as many people like to say.  You cant try to make it 'nicer' - it is what it is.

Yeah, D, I'll have to agree with everyone else on this thread.  Most of us agree that Appetite already IS the best album ever made, even if there's a song or two on there that we could live without (for me, it's "You're Crazy", but I love each and every one of the rest).  "Back Off Bitch" might have fit on there, but then the UYI albums would be without one of their greatest rockers.  Also, I think that "Bitch" expresses the alienated-lover topics of a lot of the UYI songs, albeit in a more angry way than the ballads.

"November Rain" and "Don't Cry" are both amazing songs, but they don't belong on Appetite For Destruction for four reasons.  #1, they were both unfinished at that point, and wouldn't have been as effective as they were on later albums.  #2, Appetite was the sound of righteous anger from the streets, a venomous hard rock album and a lyrical precursor to gangsta rap.  These two songs are both soft, beautiful ballads, and while they work wonders on the later, more mature work on Use Your Illusion, they don't fit in with this raw, balls-out rock 'n' roll record.  #3, as Jarmo pointed out, with these three songs, the album would have been too long.

And finally, #4 is that when you're making a statement like GN'R were on AFD, you don't want to dilute the message with too many ballads.  A lot of ballads can weigh down an album, and GN'R had to keep it fast and tight on this hard rock milestone.  That's part of the magic of "Sweet Child O' Mine".  It's a diamond in the rough, the one bit of sweet melodic relief on an album otherwise full of hard, slamming rock.  And even then, it's not as soft as "Patience" or even "Don't Cry".  It's fast enough, loud enough, and electric enough so that it coincides perfectly with the rest of the album, making a contrast but at the same time complementing it perfectly.  When you hit track 9 on Appetite...well, that's musical perfection right there.

I say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Bah...  Those songs would fuck up the flow of the album... plus I really like Think About You.

If you replaced You're Crazy and Anything Goes with You Could Be Mine and Back Off Bitch... maybe you'd be onto something.  Still, I don't think either AFD or UYI need be fucked with.

Appetite already IS the best album ever made

Yes

Quote
a lyrical precursor to gangsta rap

No

N.W.A. - N.W.A. And The Posse (1987)

Ice-T - Rhyme Pays (1987)

Schoolly D - Schoolly D (1986)

Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five - "The Message" (1982) (Complete with jungle analogy)

These are the lyrical precursors to gangsta rap.  I know some  desperately want to give GNR credit for that kind of influence, but its simply not there.  Gangsta rap was influenced by the artists actual environment and other rap music, not Guns N' Roses.  GNR rode the same tide of cultural change as rap music, but theyre not responsible for it.  There was cursing, drugs, misogyny and poverty in rap before Appetite For Destruction.

The only song that could have possibly enhanced AFD is "You Could Be Mine".

No, APPETITE IS THE BEST EVER.

Dont Cry and NR would ruin it.

They are great on Illusions.

Every track on AFD is worthy.. not one track is a filler.. even Anything Goes or Think About You.

Crazy crazy thread!

the sort chemistry of all the songs on AFD is impossible to explain... u gotta feel it not understand it... at the time they record Appetite they had no idea that this was gonna be the best album ever (in my mind anyway) ... they just hit the mark.. incredible really ... all the songs fit together so well and apply great to any social message or idea that u may have on the world. it's hard to imagine something missin'.. someone called it perfect.. yeah.. for me it may very well be perfect.. i did a project for school some time ago... it's theme was AFD and how much of a social/political message it had to me and how much it affected me and others in so many things ... AFD is a soundtrack to rock itself. when i think about it i can't but think of Che GUevara, MArtin Luther KIng, John Lennon, Orwell , Baudelaire and so many others... it purest form of art... absolutely inspiring.. i can honestly say that this album has changed and then saved my life.. what if questions are ussualy pointless .. this has upset me. obvsiously.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that You Could Be Mine just missed out on being finished enough to make it onto AFD.

Appetite for Destruction is the best album ever.
Personally I think songs like November Raoin would have ruined it as they did not fit in with the album's sound.
It is a perfect album already!    ok
