Report: GILBY CLARKE Quits ROCK STAR SUPERNOVA; Band To Change Name

According to ET Canada, former GUNS N' ROSES guitarist Gilby Clarke has left ROCK STAR SUPERNOVA, the band he formed with Tommy Lee (M?TLEY CR?E), Jason Newsted (VOIVOD, ex-METALLICA) and Canadian vocalist Lukas Rossi. No reason was given for Gilby's departure but the disastrous sales of the group's self-titled debut album (which has shifted less than 56,000 copies in the United States since its November 2006 release, according to Nielsen SoundScan) are believed to have been a contributing factor.

Although Rossi didn't confirm Clarke's exit from the band, he told ET Canada that "there will be a name change? the best is yet to come!" He also said that he is working on lyrics for a new album.

There is no word yet if Lee and Newsted will continue to be involved with the group, which completed a U.S. tour in February with THE PANIC CHANNEL as support.

The band lost Newsted in October 2006 after an accident that resulted in a torn anterior labrum in his left shoulder and a rotator cuff and bicep tear in the right (bassist Johnny Colt of BLACK CROWES/TRAIN filled in during the aforementioned trek). Newsted suffered the injuries while trying to catch a 90-pound bass head that had fallen from atop his amp. The combination of surgery and a lengthy rehab assignment left him sidelined for up to nine months.

"Rock Star Supernova" was certified gold in January for Canadian sales in excess of 50,000 copies.

I don't know why Gilby got involved with that crappy band anyway, he should've hooked up with Slash, Duff & Matt in VR. ok

damn I always thought tommy would be the first to go. I imagined lukas and gilby being the only ones left after the tour to be honest since gilbys the least famous out of the three and lukas for obvious reasons.

Of the Supernova stuff I've heard, Gilby's guitar stuff sounds pretty good, I figured it was his riffs.
The weak link is their singer, I don't like Lukas at all.

Me too Wink I was bummed to see him doing that Supernova crap.

Plus their singer looks like an ass clown. I hate those guys who puts up make-up and shit. They're a joke. (Guys like Rossi). And my grandmother sings better than he does. And of course I thought that even their name was stupid.

The only good thing : that girl, Storm hihi

Storm is an awesome performer, and right now she is on tour with Gilby here in Canada. Well actually they are only touring the province of Ontario but she's opening for him and I've heard the shows where great.

I'm so glad Gilby left that band, nor he or Jason had any real input into that band so why even bother.

I believe Gilby has 3 co-writing credits with Butch Walker, and Tommy wrote the rest with Butch-I'm bummed how this turned out-when they idea first came up, I thought it was great, but I didn't like a lot of the singers on the show-I would be surprised if Jason were still involved

that's great news to me. i saw supernova 's first show at the joint in vegas and you could tell gilby wasn't enjoying it. i love all of his solo stuff but supernova was clearly not his type of music. and lukas rossi sucks, what a poser!

I know Gilby also wasn't happy-he felt they were promoting it too much as Tommy Lee's band-the album is ok-I'm not that big on Lucas but musically I thought it was pretty lame-don't forget all the music was recorded before Lukas came on board-sad for Gilby, this was the opportunity he was looking for-lead guitar in a big band-I'm still stunned how low album sales were

He  had plenty of input into the album, Jason was the only one who's influence isn't really felt.

The tunes Gilby wrote sound like they could be on a Gilby Clarke album, and the same with Tommy's-they sound like his solo stuff-I think Gilby had plenty of input-I'm not sure who made the final song selelction, though-it will be interesting to hear Gilby's take on things
