Title: Did anyone miss Buckethead?
Post by: ShotgunBlues1978 on May 19, 2006, 12:38:17 AM
I haven't really seen this discussed.  Personally to me, Buckethead was a highlight from the 2002 tour.  I know a lot of people didn't like his stage presence or image, but I always said fuck it, he can play the lights out.  I like Ron Thal, I thought he was very cool, and his outro on November Rain was awesome, as was the part when he got down and let the crowd play his guitar.  But the way Buckethead tore up the solos on Jungle, Nightrain, YCBM, and NR wasn't quite matched.  That said, the latest version of the band is awesome and seem like a cohesive unit, so no complaints.  But I can't lie about it I would've liked to hear Buckethead's parts on IRS and Better and his solos on the old songs

I miss buckethead, I enjoy his music and image more than Gn'R's. Thal is surely good, but I don't give a fuck about him really.

i saw them at cleveland in 2002, and last night as well. I am not going to be one of those people that say buckethead sucks and all that, because bh has great guitar skills. However, no, his name didnt pop into my head once last night, they more than held their own. Maybe the guitar pyrotechnics weren't as crazy, but Ron Thal's solos fit very well in my opinion. I am very happy with the current lineup.

I am very happy with the current lineup.

So am I, great lineup, and they put on an amazing show.  This isn't a knock on anyone in the band, just a praise of Buckethead, I thought his parts on the songs, new and old, really kicked ass

Yeah I was listening to the solo on nightrain form the recent shows and I kinda felt something was missing :-\ Ron seems like a cool guy, but many times during the 2002 shows I spent a lot of the time looking at bucket more than axl. It was like he was a co-attraction or something.

don't get me wrong bucket is awsome and i truly love his work in gnr.

I like Bucket's playing a lot more than Thal......but it seemed that this version of GNR clicked a whole lot better so if this keeps working.......hell yeah I'm all for it.

Ron Thal is cool with me, no gripes.  Buckethead is gone and never coming back, Ron Thal did a great job stepping in especially since he only had one week's rehearsal and was still kicking ass on both new and old songs, so credit to him.  He also seems like a hell of a guy and has been very kind to the fans, which is also a great thing to see.  I have no complaints about Ron Thal, I think he's a near perfect choice both with his chops and his attitude and demeanor.  I'm just saying that Buckethead was the man, and I really enjoyed seeing him play with GnR when he was in the band   :peace:

His skills yes. But seeing as Ron is very skilled player as well, and has an image is cooler than Bucket. Plus Ron seems like a very nice guy and very approchable, which is good for this band.

I'm so glad buckethead is gone.

THe new line up looks rock n roll, act like they are a tight band that are close and friends. The whole circus theme that sumed up the 2002 tour is over. These guys mean serious busniess.

I like that the band look like a bunch of rockers now, not a circus side show.? ?With all due respect to Bucket and his talent,  the band seems more like a unit now.

Title: Re: Did anyone miss Buckethead?

can't really say one way or the other, considering I haven't heard or seen anything quite yet (bootleg is downloading ), but one look at my avatar, and I get most of you could geuss how I'm gonna feel. Bucket really offered some very, very cool solos on the old stuff. Overall, I'd say, yes, I miss him, because GNR and Bucket are my 2 favorite artists. And having them together is a bonus for me. But, I'm sure the current guys are more than capable.

I missed Bucket alot. My interest in the players was reduced by his absence, not to say that there wasn't other things to focus on.

I think Robin definately stood out these nights though; perhaps that was the source of the friction.

I definitely missed Buckethead.  He is just so amazing, i wish he was around to show us more of what he could do in Guns.  It was sweet while it lasted and i also hope that at least some of the stuff on record that he has done remains.

I think Ron will be great in the band though, he impressed me even though he wasn't quite comfortable out there and he should add quite a lot to Guns.  I love how he is so nice and friendly to the fans and of course his image will fit a lot better in the band for the public at large...

i was in CT and NYC in 2002, and friday and sunday night this past week.

the answer is, YES I DID MISS BUCKETHEAD....but, it wasn't a make or break deal..its about axl. BH was a cool side show. i think they should go with 2 guitarists, robin n fortus seem ultra loyal and very dedicated. they dont need another guitarist, especially with dizzy playing guitar if they let him, and 2 keyboards!

Offcourse I miss Bucket very much, however my faith in Ron compensates a lot of it. Knowing Buck will never return to GNR, I'm totally excited they found such a great solution in Thal.

-PEACE-

I miss him, really. He is an outstanding guitar player, and his solo in TWAT is near to perfection, flawless, absolutly killer. But I'm really convinced and happy with the actual lineup. If there is one person in the world to replace Buckethead, that is Bumblefoot. GNR have lost a genius, but now the band seems to enjoy playing, and Axl's voice compensates big time that loss.

...and now the band looks like a typical rock band, without freaks.

im glad buckethead is gone. thal seems to be competant. he is an individual without being insane.

On a slightly different topic, what's Buckethead's best solo album? Really tempted to buy one to see what its like!

I think the most important thing is that the band sounds gelled, not disjointed. Can't wait to see 'em!

I am a confessed Buckethead fan from before he joined GnR, however once the band took the stage to the opening of WTTJ on friday night, I didnt miss him......... or anyone else that wasn't on stage for that matter.

Of Course I miss Buckethead!!..Although the band seems more tight than in did on 2002, at the Bootlegs i listened to, Ron thal does not add something great....
I really miss Buckethead's solos on both Old (Nightrain,KoHD) and New Ones (Better & TWAT)...

who says that it is bh who played on the new leaks anyway..... axl said it in the trunk interview.... anyone who says they can distinguish him from bumble or finck is full of shit.... especially when it comes to a studio track. i dont care what anyone has in reply, but all of you so called musicians might need to listen harder..... i dont like this solo or that.... ?but bumble can play those parts also and could easily be confused with bh. especially when it comes to a studio recorded piece.

Title: Re: Did anyone miss Buckethead?

Considering these leaks came out long before Bumblefoot joined the band, I'll go out on a limb and say it's not him.
Robin and Bucket have different styles, Either might be able to play the others style, but its pretty obvious who wrote what parts. I least I think it is.

Fair enough, but one thing to consider.  Buckethead at least IMO blew the doors off everyone besides Axl at the 2002 shows.  He really stole the show.  Ron Thal only had a week to rehearse with the band, so he didn't have the scene stealing presence Buckethead had in 2002  :peace:

that is true, I mean he was very good.. I got to know ron much better on a personal level getting to speak to him afew times outside the nyc venues.

hey dumbass buckethead uses the kill-switch in his twat solo, sure ron couldve had one made or used a tremolo pedal but i doubt axl would have someone go through so much trouble to have someone replicate someone else's tone so well (as the wah-wah and everything sounds just like bucket) when ron is talented enough to write his own fucking solo in his own style.  Also the leaks came out before ron was in the band.  Thus clearing any possibility that ron plays anything on the leaks, it must be bucket that plays the shred solos of better and IRS cuz robin richard dont have that good of technique.  And yes i am mr musician who knows that well.  Im sure i sound cocky but i probably know what im talking about more than u considering that im going to berklee college of music to study guitar.

I guess they were lucky to have Bucket for a few years.  Just speculating but they probably have 20 or so tracks written during his tenure.  I'm sure that stuff is gold and will make up the bulk of CD and the next release.  But I'd still like to know how much writing Bucket did.  It seems to me like he was a shredder that added a little salt to the songs.  All the other players  have been credited (again speculation) with writing entire songs (even Pitman!).

The annoying thing about Buckethead is that he is an amazing guitarist yet he still sticks with his gimmick, and it's a crap gimmick which he doesn't need.

Buckethead live is technically brilliant, he has no emotion and stands there like a robot (another gimmick) and plays lifelessly, but he can still play anythink he wants note for note. Also he seems to have ALOT of writing skills, look at the IRS & TWAT demos from '99 and then listen to the more recent demos with Bucketheads parts on them, he greatly increases the songs.

And you would think that with a guy with that much talent that he would just come out dressed normally, showing hi face and becoming an amazing guitarist, but no. He stands there with a stupid KFC bucket on his head, dressed in a yellow rain coat, a hockey mask and talking through a decapeted head. There is no need for these stupid gimmicks which are doing nothink for him. When Ozzy wanted him to do session work for him didn't he also ask him too lose the mask.

So from one point yes I will miss Buckethead because he really is a good guitarist, but from another point no I won't because his own stupid gimmicks go against him.

From what I have heard of the leaked demo's I miss the Bucket. I like the solos and the bridges and I don't believe we have heard the best of his work with GNR yet.

However I also like Thal for different reasopns and don't believe he has had the chance yet to bring his style to GNR.

Whatever I am still going to check out his work outside of Little Eye which I have and think is fantastic
