First of all I'm not sure what forum this belongs to (and couldn't see anything about this via the search function).

What I want to ask is what the fuck is Axl wearing at The Roxy, 18th January 1986 show? I got the vid tonight and the quality isn't the best. But am I seeing right when I say Axl is wearing leather chaps and a THONG?Huh

Not sure if it's the quality of the tape thats making it look like that. Could someone verify if they have a decent version of the show?

Thanks

Haha, correct you are! Leather thong + leather chaps = early Axl. There's a picture of this somewhere, much clearer than the video.

Actually I think that photo collage from the Appetite artwork includes some with Axl in that outfit, although you can't really see it too well. I own the Robert John book and it has a very distinct shot of this outfit. I guess it was a standard getup for him back in the day.

I remember reading once where someone said that all the girls fancied Axl because they could see his butt when he was wearing his chaps so it must have been a regular thing  ok

Johnnyblood: If thats the pic you were refferring to, I don't think I have seen that before. But that pic is the outfit I was talking about. Couldn't believe it when I saw it.. for about 10 seconds, then I remembered some of the press about what the band was like before AFD. (First time I heard of them was when they played the Marquee 87 and the release of It's So Easy). So it wasn't much of a shock after I thought about it.

Axl used to wear the g-string/chaps thing quite a bit, he also wore these funny codpieces.  Ah, the eighties.

I think he started letting that go, once Johnny Thunders called him a "biker fag".  Poor Axl.

It's those underwear looking things, is that right?   The Ross Halfin photos that were posted a while back - Axl is wearing white tights and a red codpiece.  Quite amusing.

The late Johnny Thunders whose shoes are being filled by Izzy Stradlin at the Meltdown Festival.   Interesting.   Izzy wore some equally funny outfits during the 80's as well.

Yep, kind of like a protective cup, you could knock on it.  lol
The eighties, were awesome, with their outrageous styles, I don't imagine we'll ever see that again.  And dammit, it was fun.

I've seen that picture, but it's not the one on Appetite. Actually, the ones in the Appetite collage don't show the chaps or the codpiece, but you can tell he's wearing that outift, probably from the same roll of film!

amen to that brother.

someone has to destroy these pics immediately!! stop posting them. Axl looks like a member of a hardcore village people tribute band. Must say that axl made some rather fruity wardrobe choices back in the day. I don't think i could ever go to a concert if axl was wearing that thing, either that or I would have to watch all of the other band members or something.

no, maybe, also probably got him alot of unsolicited come-ons from males. But flannel shirts that lumberjacks wear really don't come acrossed as gay as much as a male wearing a thong with ripped leather pants, but alas it was the 80's.
 Cool

and it's funny you should say he has the balls to wear that. That may have been the reason he went for that look.

 Cool

Perhaps, but gay or not, it sure looks hella cooler than a lame dirty flannel shirt.

Okay, I think I must be of the minority here in that I love the way Axl dressed in both the 80s and the early 90s.  He had the ability to make absolutely anything look cool.  I think that he looks really cool in the pictures that have been posted.  It's fun to watch and visually interesting in a way that you don't see too much anymore.  I like the whole glam image, but I also like the harder image that they took on after Appetite.  I don't know...maybe it's the fact that my teenage years have been spent in a music world where most rock bands where black t-shirts and jeans, black t-shirts and jeans, black t-shirts and....GAAAAAH!!  I also like the fact that male singers for 80s bands weren't afraid to express their sexuality.  Nowadays it's mainly female singers that are going around in skimpy clothing.  But back then, male singers like Axl expressed their sexuality in full-on, intrusive ways.  Cool.

Now, having said all this, I have to say that wearing a freakin' THONG just goes way too far, even for me.  I mean, I can admire Axl for wearing short spandex pants, but good god, a thong is just too much.  Don't really want to see that, I have to say.
