Surreal to be sitting here on another continent, sipping my espresso, morning birds are chirping and GNR are kicking ass into the night somewhere..

I'm really thrilled about the setlist and how 18,000 people are now getting a kick-ass show with a killer setlist. The majority of whom haven't seen GNR in 15 years.

Also, any sight of izzy?

Title: Re: June 2nd - Monterrey (updates)

I think the encore was cut short because they started late....and don't forget there's another show tonight 500 miles away. They did do Madagascar during soundcheck, so it looks like it was planned for the encore.

I don't have a confirmation that RQ was played as some other sources say. That doesn't mean it wasn't - I am just reporting what I received. We'll find out soon.

Hmm, not a bad set, but I'd really like to hear (at the Sydney shows), from the new songs, ChiDem and Maddy. I've loved them since we first heard them, so I'd love to have the chance to hear the band play them. I'm going to both shows, so hopefully I'll hear them at one of them!
Good to see the '07 tour get off to a good start (apart for the long wait)- hopefully it'll be an awesome one!

Kinda backs up how some of us feel about the current set list. Guess Axl has changed his approach to that this time around.

to back up what i said earlier, heres a video clip. All the people that have problems with the set, pay attention at 48 seconds.

Title: Re: June 2nd - Monterrey (updates)
Post by: Calcy on June 03, 2007, 08:33:51 AM
It's probably more due to the fact that GN'R is a victim of its own success. They have so many songs from previous albums that fans at that show wanna hear. WTTJ, ISO, Brownstone, Nightrain, KOHD, LALD, SCOM, YCBM etc etc.

Just need to wait for the album to drop then the show will freshen up.

And give our South American, Asian and Australasian friends sample this show, cos it fucking rocks!

has anyone heard of it been filmed? (not crappy phone cameras)

if it has, il make a return to making some bootleg dvd covers for everyone, since this is the first show of 2007 :)

it will take a couple of days tho, because im going to give photographers from the show chance to upload some real nice photos to use on the artwork :) as usual.

edit:

il just point out, im not expecting it to be filmed and put on the internet today. it was a question to see whether it will be worth while making a cover or not. so if anyone can confirm this, then cheers!

Your posts are very mature.

You claim you support the band, but you want them to fit your needs. It doesn't matter that 15000 people are having the time of their lives, you want the band to play songs for you. And you weren't even there!

What exactly are you supporting? A band that fits your needs or a band that does what they think is right?

I pointed out how Axl's doing what he's been doing since day one. He's gonna give the best show he can.

You on the other hand will find anything to complain about, even though it has nothing to do with you.

Thousands of fans are probably feeling happy this morning after seeing GN'R for the first time since 1993 (or ever for some fans), but that's not good enough for some of you who sit behind a keyboard in another country.....

"What exactly are you supporting? A band that fits your needs or a band that does what they think is right?"

How can you possibly justify that what they are doing is because they feel they are doing the right thing? this is now the 4th fucking tour that has been self proclaimed "the chinese democracy world tour". that is blatent false advertising for two reasons:
1-a fan who wants to hear new material would think that due to the title they will hear new stuff (and more than 3-5 songs)
2-when they don't actually play said title song, and therefore how can you call it the Chidem world tour?

This band has become a joke

did you actualy think they were going to change the setlist??

basically the 02' tour was to keep the band intact and it was only a short Europe jaunt and 15 us shows ( i believe)

this is a world tour before the album releases and more than likely a world tour after the album releases.. different legs and in different times.. they needed time off to finish the record and they should be done or finishing what they need finished.

I believe this may be the final stretch as theres not many countries left to play in... :hihi: a strategy some may not get..but i'll bet it has something to do with $$$$

Ok, what I don't get is why do there have to be alot of new songs?
At the show here last year, every time they played a new song, the arena went quiet, because unlike us, most of the people there don't come to boards and haven't a clue about leaks. Most of the people I spoke with there said they came because they used to like GN'R when they were younger and wanted to relive it and see them live.
IMO playing the old, familiar & loved songs is good, it's what people know and what is dear to them, and to us all.
Best thing (after these gigs) would be to release, let the new songs become familiar with most people and then start playing them in the shows and a few less of the old.
I was pretty much the only one singing along to the new songs in '06, everyone around me sat down and just listened.

 :peace:

One thing I know for sure ... they're just gonna start playing more songs of Chinese Democracy when the CD is released, because otherwise we would know "all" the songs of the CD and there would be no surprise at all. And i don't remember who, but someone in the band said they were only playing Better, IRS and TWAT because they leaked... so, forget about new songs on these leg of the tour!

However ... i think we DO need to discuss about the setlist... OF COURSE, i would be pleased to see a Guns N' Roses show with this exact songs... i would fuckin' go nuts! I wouldn't complain at all ... But hey, why they don't play "new old" songs, like Civil War, Perfect Crime (that was on possible songs setlist) and Estranged? Why?? It would be even BETTER! It would be a great surprise to the fans that are following this new GN'R since 2001 !

I guess a lot of people here don't understand why they don't do that, including myself, and that's it... we don't need to bash these guys ... they love GN'R just as you do !

It makes perfect sense to most people that you don't want to ruin the surprise by playing a lot of new songs at this point.

Especially when we haven't heard those songs.

I can't understand the notion some of you are convinced of that states that GNR MUST play new, as of yet unheard songs....Hell, when ANY band actually releases an album, they play at most 5 songs from a new record, if not less

No, I'm sorry, but the the joke is on anyone naive enough to believe the band would play any additional new tracks off the album before it's released.  I mean come on, if you're a regular reader of GNR messageboards, then you really should know the score (and this includes any timing issues!).  On the other hand, if you're not quite such a devoted follower, then you're more than likely going to want to hear the classics; which is what you got.

I don't know how many more times we're going to go round this particular mulberry bush on show threads but it's getting bloody annoying to keep logging on for updates only to find whinging from people not even at the show.

As for the title of the tour, how can it possibly be false advertising when they are indeed playing songs off the forthcoming album.  Just because they don't play enough for you, is neither here nor there.  The last leg of the Illusions tour was called the Skin 'n' Bones tour but I don't know of anyone feeling let down because there wasn't a song of that name in the set.

As to why they're not playing some of the other songs from UYI, I expect Axl has his reasons and, as he is the person who has to sing them, I think we should respect that decision.  I'm not saying that people shouldn't express the hope that their particular favourite is added to the set, but just that there's no justification for throwing a strop when it fails to materialise.

I can't understand the logic of people that say they need to play a whole bunch of new songs. ?How many die hard fans do you think were at tht show in Mexico and said we got screwed because they didn't play more songs from the new CD? ?I would guess not many. ?It is the bands discression about what to play. ?Get over it. ?if you didn't go to the show quit nitching about the setlist. ?You don't know how the show went over, and how the band sounded. ?Judging a show based on what songs are listed on a setlist and the time they went on is pointless. ?That gives yo no indication of how it sounded or the feel of the show.

bah I'm tired of those assholes who always complain about the setlist blah blah blah
metallica toured with the same setlist year after year (91-93) and what? ppl like what they do on stage, and btw they can play whatever they fucking want.
Gr8 show and hope that they will remain in that setlist for about 10-50 dates just to piss some fuckin morons off here.

I remember back in the 91 when GNR started to play a bunch of new songs (UYI songs) and ppl constantly refrain about their setlist "by not to play their appetite classics" bah fuck off, go and enjoy them live as long as you can.

If the band goes on late people drink more. less likely to know sutle mistakes made by the band. Spend more money. Honestly ,The real reason chin democracy isn't out isn't because the albums not done. It's because there is going to be new technology introduced so no one will be able to burn copies. One way or another when the technology arrives so does the tunes. until then we might never get an album.

What versions of Better and IRS were played?? Are they playing the more rock oriented versions of old or the newer leaked versions with more synthesizer in them?

Also, and I said this in a post that someone deleted for no reason, I think it is real bad news that Axl didn't mention the album once.? If they were done mixing and mastering then he would certainly want to promote his finished product.? I think we can conclude that the band went on tour before the mixing was done and that they are far enough away from a release that they figurede they might as well tour before finishing it.? The setlist hasn't changed in 15 months, but who cares?? The real problem I see is that they didn't mention the album at all.

The same versions that I have heard in bootlegs and the Rock Am Ring show.

I was hoping for an album announcement or something too, but well, the show rocked and I think that it's the thing that 98% of the people there cared.

actually, the band guns n roses does not agree with your statement at all. look at what they actually played and when they played it. if you know the bands history, then you know that Use Your Illusions came out on sept 17, 1991. Nine months earlier on january 21, 1991 , gnr played rock in rio 2. Here was the setlist: Pretty Tied Up (unreleased), Brownstone, patience, double talkin' jive (unreleased) jungle, knockin, you could be mine (unreleased), easy, civil war, dead horse (unreleased), sweet, estranged (unreleased), paradise...if anything, playing the unreleased material fueled the fire for the new album and was very exciting to hear. i remember saying i cant wait until i hear these songs on the album when it comes out......rio 2 (first night) was one of the best shows they ever played...anyone else remember that one?

As I said, in 1991 they knew they were gonna release 30 new songs.

If you play 5-6 new songs, it's about 1/5 of the total number of songs.

Now, if they play five new songs today out of maybe 15-18 that's gonna be on Chinese Democracy, that's about 1/3 or 1/4.

The fact that you claim to know what "the band Guns N' Roses" agrees with or not is kinda pointless.

In 1991 fans who weren't in Rio weren't whining about the setlists at home in USA.

Times change.

Today many bands who have just released new albums only play a few of the new songs and the rest are old ones. It's not uncommon at all.

I dont understand why people think they should play more unreleased songs..
Whats the point when there still is no new album? 98% of the people goes to this
concert to listen to Scom, Wttj, ise, browstone, paradisec. etc etc..
When the album is released.. yeah, they will play more new song, and also maybe
switch the setlist. But for now, thats not a good move at all.

Imagine, Metallica touring before St. Anger, and play most st anger tunes.. would not make
any sence..

When people attend a concert, they are there to listen to the released stuff they have listened to
through Appetite and Illusion. And who knows? Maybe you guys wont like Prostitute, If The World
att all. We all want Chinese Democracy to come ut! But remember why you are a GNR fan! Because
of the setlist they are currently playing. Im so happy to have been to GNR concerts where they have
played the classic stuff. The setlist may get very changed when CD is out..

You check the setlists yourself and notice that once they knew what worked, the sets were pretty much the same (especially in 1992).

Ok, so in 1991 when they had 30 songs to choose from from two new albums that they knew were coming out within a few months they played a bunch of new songs.

That was a time when they wanted to prove that they were about more than just one album.

How does that compare to 2007? They've already proved that they had more great songs than just the ones Appetite.

But the fact is, AFD is their most well-known album.

hey, i agree with you. thats EXACTLY the point. Illusions came out to, as axl said himself, to "bury appetite." and yes, to prove that they werent about just one album and they played almost every track off of illusions live before the cd's came out..almost every one!...totally, i agree 100%. but just because its a different time does not mean that the same reasoning can not apply. It totally does!!! This version of gnr is so much more than appetite and illusions! the new material blows the old stuff away. all they need to do is go out there and play the new stuff. the material will speak for itself. its time to put appetite and illusions behind them and move on with chinese democracy. its a different time, but the reasoning still holds true as it did in 1991...the band can and will move beyond appetite and illusions...again, im speaking generally and i am really happy that all the fans around the world enjoyu seeing the band live no matter what songs they play...its all about fun and excitement.....i think you agree with that..don't you?

I insist ... i think the band's choice of not playing anymore Chinese Democracy unreleased tracks is correct. The problem is not exploring the vast Guns N' Roses discography, mainly UYI... but, anyway, like I said ... i'm happy anyway, a Guns N' Roses concert is a Guns N' Roses concert. Any setlist will kick ass because they got MANY great songs... this is a "healthy" discussion, is not a situation of life and death, so take it easy guys...

THE REAL PROBLEM IS CHINESE DEMOCRACY NOT BEING RELEASED AFTER ALL THIS TIME... if it had already happened, we would be having a very different discussion about the setlists...

I just think the complaining is partly from the delay in the album release. I can see why Axl refuses to play more new songs and include many classics in the setlist, I think it's good for the fans who attend the shows since most of them are not online checking the setlist of every single show and comparing them. Hell, I'd be more than glad to attend a GN'R show with a setlist like the ones they were playing last year.

The thing is, waiting for the fucking album for so long makes people want more fresh stuff then what we already got. Yeah, we got 8 new songs so far, but that's 8 songs in 14 fucking years!! I speak for myself here, but I'm starting to get a little pissed that they start a tour and there's no sight of the album release. Then they start another tour, and still no album, no announcements, no nothing! Then Axl comes and cancels the January shows in order to finish the album and announces a tentative release date. I was VERY happy Axl had finally decided to address GN'R fans like that, come clean about some stuff. But even though I knew the release date was tentative and I kinda expected them not to release the album in the announced date, I never expected that in june, 3 months later after the tentative release date announced by Axl, we'd be completely in the dark again!!

And then comes yet another tour, which is great, I love the fact that they are back in action, but it's really starting to get a bit ridiculous that there's ABSOLUTELY NO SIGN of the album again! And you can't say there is, because most of us were 95% sure the album would be out by december last year (at least we got an explanation back then).

So, we can't really complain about the setlists, 4 or 5 new songs is pretty good, but having 8 new songs in 14 years is ridiculous. I wonder what would have happened if Better, IRS and TWAT had never leaked. I bet my ass that the band would still be playing only The Blues, CD and Madagascar at the shows, and I can only imagine what the whiners would be saying...

but just because its a different time does not mean that the same reasoning can not apply. It totally does!!! So you think they should play sets with a majority of new songs nobody has heard?

You don't think the people at the shows will be wishing they'd play more old stuff while others would wish the anticipation and surprises were saved until the album is out?

Haven't you paid any attention to what others around you are saying? There's a bunch of people who think the songs we've heard live are enough for now. But you want more......

It's pretty pointless to try to reason with some of you. You weren't at the shows you're complaining about. I just can't relate to your way of thinking.

15000 fans are going insane and enjoying the show, you think it sucks and you're not even there.... Makes no sense to me.

i loved the shows last year, and if gnr was playing near me for the first time, i would PREFER they do the same setlist they've been doing. and i know there are MANY others who feel the same way.

when people see gnr, they want hear the classics. it's tough to fully enjoy a live song that you're hearing for the first time.

jarmo, let me first say this...i respect the fact that you have been running the site for 11 years and your dedication to the band. i really do. i can relate because ive been a die hard for over 20 years. ive travelled the world to see the band and have been to over 100 shows over that time period. so, dont get me wrong...im not complaining, im not gonna tell the band what to do, im happy the fans are enjoying the shows and i never said the shows suck, never, and i never will...they are all fucking great...i should know...ive been to over 40 "new" gnr shows since 2001. i was just bringing up some points that i thought were worth discussing and that are important. i would never complain or suggest the band to do a fucking thing....this band has brought me so much happiness over the years and will continue to do so. im behind them 100%. since ive been around and have seen alot of shows and know the history very well, i just bring up some points of discussion, thats it....

"How about we play our, uh, see we don't use a set list. We go by how we feel, and how you feel. That way, we don't get bored with doing the same shit every night, and you people go 'You know, they did the same show when I was in Chicago'.  No, we, we don't have guys standing under the stage doing my whistle parts, and we don't have sample shit. Why don't we play what we usually open with? Here we go..."

Now thats fucking rock and roll. On the other hand, Velvet Revolver seems to be doing mainly the same set list each night too, but they only have so many songs to choose from.

Yeah, and I mentioned why I think they might not want to play more new songs at this point.

It's not 1991 anymore.

Quote
Pretty Tied Up (unreleased), Brownstone, patience, double talkin' jive (unreleased) jungle, knockin, you could be mine (unreleased), easy, civil war, dead horse (unreleased), sweet, estranged (unreleased),

5?

Better(unreleased), IRS(unreleased), the blues(unreleased), Madagascar(unreleased), cd,(unreleased) etc...

Yeah, exactly.

Isn't it funny how things were sooo much better when they played a lot of unreleased songs?

Oh wait, maybe they didn't!

/jarmo

Jarmo, most those shows in 1991 they were playing 9 to 10 new songs a night. Plus, Civil War & Knocking On Heaven's Door. That's 11 to 12 songs a night from the UYIs before the albums had even come out.

Here is my review of the show, more than a concert review I?ll try to share my experience with you all since most of the main details you already know.

I got at the Arena at 7pm with two of my closest cousins, by that time, I had stopped drinking any liquids 3 hours before, my plan was not to miss my spot or any second of the concert by going to the restroom, I stud right in the middle and bellow the arena center screen, I would say 15 mts from stage,  the first opener, I think it was vulture, got on stage around nine, they just did three songs, sucked big time, people star throwing coins and water.. precious water!  to the stage .. at the end of the last song the guy said something like.. ?we are sorry,  we haven?t play together for a while?.. or something,  that?s what  I heard, very pathetic.

Around 10pm,  Maligno took the stage, they were ok the  first couple of songs, then it was boring, the lead singer looked like gay to me, and a rockstar wanna be, very looser.. everybody was !FUERA! FUERA!!, we all turned around and started rocking the opposite side, very funny, I was having a blast, I guess Maligno was not,  some stupid people throw very dangerous things to them.

Then the waiting begun, we met this cute girl from Chihuahua we were chatting and that made the wait easier, she was kind of looking for protection I?m tall 6-3 and she was little and fragile hehe,   people from the arena said 11:15pm was the time?   at 11:15  nothing, I thought it was a problem with the right teleprompter, it wasn?t working and later they brought a new one and replace it,  that was the reason!!  everybody was saying.. we are ready to start!.. nop!.  11:30pm.. nothing..  11:45pm  nothing.. 12:00am.. one of my cousin couldn?t stand it any more and left, he went to lobby.. at 12:15am  he called me, there was a long line of people upset and drunk asking for their money back, according to my cousin at lest  1000 people actually left the arena, and you could tell because I was now 5 mts from stage!, one girl pass out.. heat was infernal.. then I met this guy from Veracruz, he was very frustraded, he traveled 18 hrs by bus just for the concert and as him and me, many people came from distant places, I knew this was normal for GNR, but I was very very worried, then from the left side of the arena, the police.. probably 20 of them,  shit!!.. I thought.. that?s it? they are kicking us out,  I was so ready start a riot.. and believe me I was not the only one.

I needed water so bad..  me and my stupid not drinking water plan. Suddenly the lights slightly changed, it was the screens around the area, showing something like..  ?In a few minutes the band Guns and Roses will start the show, thanks for you patience? finally a hope!, at 12:30or 12:40, the lights went out, I could feel adrenaline flowing, recharging my batteries, forgetting my thirst and  forgiving Axl, then the first tunes of WTTJ, everybody screaming and blowing their throats, it was for sure I was around hardcore fans, from there everything was excitement, singing, screaming, jumping, trying to call the Axl?s attention, a blast!!. between songs choiring GUNS N ROSES! GUNS N ROSES! Some lead by Frank   I was having one of the best times of my life, after LALD many were crying of excitement and look happily overwhelmed, as for the sound quality .. I have no idea.. people around me were singing so loud all the songs, even the new ones that I couldn?t hear right..

At the end ..Paradise city, that just killed me.. I left the rest of me there, slamming and dancing, if you could call it dancing and I had no voice by then.

Those were the shortest 2 hours of mi life, I lost 3 pounds and dehydrate, but let me tell you it worth every minute  waited and I wouldn?t mind waiting again, as for the set list, that was exactly what I wanted to hear, since this was may first GNR concert I don?t complaint they doing almost the same show they?ve been doing at all.

As my friend Axl, (since we have been so close now, I consider him my friend now) once  said, ?hopefully I expressed my sentiments? and find this review interesting, sorry if I misspelled or confuse you with anything,  luckily English is not my first language.

CYA.
Beto.

Thank you for the great review, Beto.  I hope the band gets to read what a fantastic time you had; knowing what an incredible time you (and thousands of others) had must make going through all the nightmare of logistics involved in getting a show the size of this one on the road and on stage worthwhile.

Don't worry about your English - it was a hundred times better than my Spanish and made perfect sense.  I hope you get the chance to see Guns again very shortly, and thanks again for the review, it's much appreciated!    : ok:
