Title: Guns N' Roses Night on American Idol?

http://www.hitfix.com/blogs/2009-1-13-monkeys-as-critics/posts/2009-3-10-recap-american-idol-the-top-13-sings-michael-jackson

Singer: ADAM LAMBERT

Song: "Black & White"

My Take: A Michael Jackson is a lay-up for Adam, with his upper register. He's overwhelmed by the band and the start and I'm immediately worried. But Adam finds himself as he goes along and the song shifts into a rock-n-roll mode. It starts off as straight-forward Jacko and becomes bigger and bigger until he's practically playing to an arena. He runs all over the stage without ever losing his breath or his rhythm, jumping around and stirring the audience up. Is anybody else ready for Adam's take on Guns 'n' Roses night? I am? I'll bet he does a spectacular Axl Rose. Is Adam theatrical? Yes. Is he frantic? Yes. Is his showmanship off the charts? Yes. His phrasing is better than anything we've seen on "Idol" since Melinda Doolittle. He plays ever word. Also, it's hard not to read at least some political statement into this choice of song.

Adam Lambert, "Black or White": As Dan Fienberg put it, Adam is gonna kill it on Guns 'N Roses night, because that was a seriously late '80s hair metal take on Jacko. I agree that very few contestants in the show's history work that stage as well as he did tonight, and he's definitely got a lot of range and ability. I'm just not sure I like what he does with it.

No please no....

so lame... so very very lame. Nothing good other then record sales can come from this. Think about it. You know there will be no songs off Chinese Democracy. So already the far superior CD will continue to get shafted and be further looked down upon which is getting infuriating. And it goes completely against Axl's  message and that as a fan, hurts. I hope this is bullshit.

God, I hope not. I really don't care to see a bunch of amateurs mutilate the songs I love so much.

Doesn't Axl have to give permission for them to sing his songs on shows like this? I've never seen or heard of anyone on AI singing GNR in the past. Hell, they never even sang a GNR song on either season of Rock Star, even with Gilby there.

I bet those two posters were just being hypothetical, complimenting Adam's range by saying he could pull off a GNR night.

i usually hate american idol but this dude does have one hell of a vocal range and enjoy is take on what he's performed; listening to him and some of the underwhelming VR auditions i'v heard online, I'd take this dude over any of them

most likely I'll get flamed for this so plesae, fire away :hihi:

Take this for what it was, an off handed comparison to Axl's energy on-stage.

Axl Rose, I hope we NEVER see a Guns night on American Idol!  My wife is a religious fan - and I have had to sit through my share of early episodes - used to be funny for the train wrecks (when they were honest attempts, rather than scripted BS to get on TV).  1 in 100 great singers -might- be able to pull off a decent performance...Carrie Underwood has done a decent Paradise City (after Idol)...but a full show would be like watching Wednesday night Karaoke, at some dive bar - the kind where there are 3 or 4 'Karaoke groupies' (fat chicks) that stay on stage all night, and drive away paying customers.

No GNR night, please.

If they just had a GNR night on American Idol and GNR had nothing to do with it, OK, u can't fault them for that if they have no control

but I remember when Bon Jovi were on there, all the shit I took from people about it. And I admit, I hated them being on that shit, but u know, sometimes people do shit they don't want to for the sake of their careers.

Anyhow, I have told people to be careful how much shit u talk about other artists and the different promo things they do, because u never know what sort of Promo GNR may end up doing once CD is out.

If they were to now appear on American Idol, honestly, it would be a GREAT move but it would also make the hardcore fan groan louder than I did when Bon Jovi were on there.

Think Of the ratings and publicity... Itd be kick ass to see GNR being blasted at the masses. A whole show of classic GNR tracks then a actual GNR appearance with some CD stuff would be a massive advert !

I guess I could tolerate the music of GNR being on the show, but I certainly can't imagine Axl being on the show, nor do I want to.  That'd be tough for me to defend, I've been slamming that show for years.

Unfortunately it would be a good PR move, not one I'd be real comfortable with though.

I could picture Axl sitting in as a guest judge if there ever were a GN'R night on that show. I don't think it's ever likely to happen, though.

ok, I agree with the others who say I just cant see Axl being on "american idol" but with that said......I can see an agreement being made that as long as a few of the new songs from CD (at least three) are done with the old songs, then I can see where GNR would agree to it....think about it....free publicity to millions regarding the news songs(Street of Dreams, Better, Sorry) and at the same time, an opportunity to be exposed to a new target audience.  Don't think there is no way in hell Axl would be a guest judge or anything, but yeah, I can see him allowing a GNR nite just for the songs...

Okay, I don't watch this show, but my mom does.  When Bon Jovi was gonna be on it, she called me, so of course I watched just to see Bon Jovi.  Now, I imagine a lot of other people that aren't fans of the show did the same thing.  That being said, I have to believe that a lot of GnR fans would watch just to see people try to sing some of the songs that they love, or as in my case, to pay respect to the band.  So, it would be a great move as far as publicity goes, providing some of the newer songs were performed along with the old.  In that aspect, I say go for it.

However, no one on American Idol is going to be able to do ANYTHING  that has ever been sung by Axl Rose justice.  His vocal range is one that I just don't think any of them could ever match.  They would have to put their own spin on it, and I just don't think any of the songs would sound as good with any of their "personal touches".  It's the touches he adds that make the songs so good.  No one can do it like Axl, so in that aspect, it makes me a little anxious.  There is nothing worse than hearing someone sing a song you love horribly.  Like the Big Daddy version of SCOM.  I wanted to tear my hair out listening to it.

That would make the most sense and actually be quite ideal.  As much as I HATE that show they get huge ratings still and if you could somehow work it out that at least a few contestants would sing some new songs off of CD then that could lead to some increased interest.  Especially if some of the more popular contestants do those songs and do a good job on them, their fans might go and search out the original songs.  It's wishful thinking, if this was to take place, but that would make it much easier to stomach.

Reading through that a second time I can't really tell if that guy is just wishing to hear that Adam dude sing some GNR because he thinks he'd do Axl justice or if he knows there's actually going to be a GNR night.

Of course, I guess that's the reason for the thread though isn't it?  But I'd lean towards guy wanting to see it over knowing about it.

Considering the back handed slap Cowell gave Axl after the 2002 VMAs (didn't mention him by name but did comment on  the very bad singing at the show), I seriously doubt this would happen.

I just caught this show on a commercial break tonight and there was 20 singers walking down the street over-singing "We Will Rock You" and eventually posing in front of a "Ford" logo and car.  It made me sick.

NO!  I don't care how much exposure it gives the band, this is hopefully just some bullshit taken out of context or something.  Especially after the comments of the ex members being whores and all.  This would scream of total and complete prostitution with drive by blow jobs.

I agree, but if nobody from the band shows up and appears on the show and they only use the music.  I think I'd be fine with that, especially if they had a few contestants perform NEW songs.

American Idol would not be prostituting himself. Okay check. "I am not going to do proper interviews and covers but, American Idol... fuck yea!"

No. No fucking way Axl agrees to this. No fucking way. It would pain me so fucking much and personally I have gained respect for Axl over his handling of Chinese Democracy. He has walked the walk unlike others who only claimed they would. This would be a big time sell out. That is why I say there is no fucking way Axl would agree to this.

.... now if it was up to Slash, yea this would have probably happened already.

I don't watch AI, but the people at work have an AI survivor thing going on.  Everyone knows I'm a big GNR fan, so I would hear ALL about it

Anyway...can you see Axl not swearing long enough to judge?  Or accidently offending someone with a facial expression during their singing or whatever.

Dear God, don't let it be something that will happen :hihi:

Once again, IF this has any ounce of truth to it, it doesn't necessarily mean Axl would show up on the show.  It was Michael Jackson night this week and he wasn't there.  They just sang his music.  That wouldn't be too painful for me, especially if they sing a few CD songs.

Title: Re: Guns N' Roses Night on American Idol?

If they use this show in any way to promote Chinese then it is going to be prostituting.  No then different than doing a commercial for something like say Volkswagon.  Maybe even worse.  I don't see this as happening Axl has seemed to hold off on anything absurd like this and like I said I am hoping beyond hope that is was just an off the cuff remark.

If they do it, and do it as being just about the music  - without Axl present there coaching the people, or sitting between Simon and Paula to judge everyone - then it's fine with me.

Yes, they are. It's only on these boards where people think that if someone says in public "oh, you're such a sweet child", or plays guitar tuned half a step down, or - dear god! - happens to enjoy GNR so much that wants to sing their song, then Axl is definately going to sue his or her ass, and has every right to do so because surely it is breaking some copyright rule, right?

They'd only do the hits, the well known classic ones, they want votes and with respect the majority of songs from CD are not "Classic or Hits" at this moment in time, well not to Joe Public as a mass audience. We've seen in the UK bad choice of songs by an artist=struggle to get votes, regardless of how well (or not) the song is sung...

Last season, there was a contestant from Axl's hometown.  I've forgotten her name, but she was one of the rocker chicks.  Anyway, she wanted to perform a GN'R song, but couldn't because Axl denied permission to use whatever song it was.  I'd be surprised if that situation has changed.  Although, Axl was name-dropped during the audition rounds (IIRC, the first episode).  It was nothing important; Ryan Seacrest simply mentioned Axl while talking to some rocker-wannabe.  And at one point in time, the AI tour included "Patience".

I'm not so sure.  I actually think they WOULD need to get permission.  I mean it's one thing if ONE contestant wants to sing a GNR song, that would be fine.  But if American Idol was going to advertise and bill an entire show as "Guns N' Roses night" I would think they'd need permission to do that.  They'd pretty much be using GNR to promote their show and I don't think they could do that without covering all the bases.

As for contestants performing ONLY classics.  That would make sense, on the one hand, if they do a good job with it.  It's what people know and are used to so if they do well people will respond favorably.  However, if they do a bad job with it, it would be easier to notice since the songs are so well known.  If a contestant were to sing a lesser known song from CD people wouldn't have a reference point to compare it to.

From what I know, they DO, in fact, need permission to use each and every song on that show. Contestants need to pick their songs directly from the AI catalog (songs that AI pays a royalty for in order to use)...they just can't pick anything they want.

Maybe someone can clarify.... but if they decide to have a "Guns N' Roses" night, they don't really need anyone's permission right?  Aren't people allowed to perform cover songs whenever they want?

Yes, they are. Exactly. Seems like I remember reading in some magazine a couple years ago how Kelly Clarkson wasn't giving AI permission to sing her songs, which everyone thought was ungrateful since AI is the reason for her success. The show has to have permission from the original artist. So far Axl hasn't allowed shows like AI and Rock Star to sing GNR songs. It's possible that could change now with CD out, but I doubt it.

There's no way any of the songs off Chinese lend themselves to be done on American Idol. Maybe Sweet Child, Don't Cry or possibly Better, but that's about it. Can you actually imagine someone singing Shackler's? LMFAO!

For years AI couldn't use the Beatles songs or catalouge. When they finally allowed it , they gave it 2 weeks of time . But it took awhile for AI to get permission for it. Eventually they will get permission for Guns n Roses songs. We might as well learn to accept it. Hell maybe someone will do a good cover . Who knows...

did anyone catch how terrible the Michael Jackson covers came out????

I don't want to see anyone screwing up and screeching the words to GNR music.

I don't think the previous article gave an actual date for "Guns N' Roses" night, it didn't say it was supposed to be this week.  In fact, the more I think about it, I'm guessing it was just wishful thinking by the reviewer.

Wait. People actually thought this was going to happen?? I was only in this thread discussing the pros and cons of actually doing a GNR night. I didn't know anyone actually believed it was happening.

I thought it could happen, yes. But I didn't think the band would actually had something to do with this, but rather just some people singing GN'R. I didn't know anything about if it they could do this without any word from Axl, tho.

carrie underwood covers GnR quite frequently on her tours and does a good job and has done Sweet Child, Paradise City, Patience and Novemeber Rain-all very well......not sure if she needs permission when touring

Yeah. I think I would LMAO to see a GNR night on Idol. Especially since they get to interpret their own songs. Could you imagine some of the shit that would come out of that night? Clay Aiken singing Mr. Brownstone. Sorry I'm regressing. Plus, they would all have to pick a different song and some of the songs might be thought of as too offensive. Like I used to lover her.     I would watch it though just for the entertainment value and laughs.

Weird.. a couple of years ago,one of the contestants in swedish idol sang sweet child..
