I think the main beef traders have with selling is that the original tapers invested money in their equipment, took the risk of bringing it into the venue and sometimes took the time to tweak the recording afterwards. And then they shared it, most of the time for free, when they could have kept it for themselves. Seeing other people making money off their back probably doesn't push them to share other recordings in the future, and it kills the whole thing.
Oh, and "official" bootleg companies like Aces High have no more right selling live recordings than the average Joe, IMO.
Well they also don't seem to like it when it's shared for free...the numerous times i had to read that because of that they won't release new stuff...it's getting boring..
Anyway selling is wrong.

Ah, I see.  I took it to mean that they cared then but it doesn't matter now.

Like it was said many times in that thread, bootlegs are illegal, that's the bottom line.

Laws may be different depending on what country you live in, but basically bootlegging (meaning recording/ trading/ selling a show) is prohibited by law. The reason is that artists (and especially producers and big majors who totally hate bootlegs) don't make money on it and some of them say bootlegs don't do justice to their music.

Some bands allow it (i.e: U2 and Pearl Jam), some bands do it themselves (Pearl Jam, String Cheese Incident, etc.) but they certainly don't allow selling on eBay and stuff. The problem between traders and sellers has been covered in this thread as well.

You're making money of somebody else's work. It's really easy. First somebody needs to record the show (and risk getting kicked out and his/her equipment taken away), then somebody needs to put it on a DVD/CD/online so you can get it. Then you take that work, burn it on a disc and make a nice profit.

What's wrong with this picture?

Taper tapes the show for free
He/she authors a DVD for free
He/she puts it online to share with other fans for free
You download the show for free and sell it on Ebay.

Actually...the taper tapes the show for the price of the ticket-which could be sky high these days.

That's assuming they only go to the show to tape it, which is stupid anyway.

Why else would they be bringing their equipment?

It isn't easy filming the show and enjoying it at the same time, believe me.  Afterwards yes, during the show not so much.

You misunderstood me. By your line of reasoning, all tapers would buy a ticket for a show only to tape it, and then trade it or sell it.  Meaning those people wouldn't be fans of the bands whose show they attend. Which is stupid.
So the price of the ticket is no added cost to the taping. They would have spent the same amount of money if they hadn't taped it.

I meant the taper records the show for us for free. Usually we don't pay these people at all for them providing these recordings.

I'm sure someone, like the sound crew, film crew or band becomes upset like when there's a riot and the soundboard recordings are stolen or somebody within the crew steals the audio or video recordings and hands them over to some fan. Even though no money might be made off of it, it is still someone's work that's being passed around without any permission..

But you do know that there are people that actually do this right?  Not to trade of course but to sell.

Yes I know that, although I'm not sure there's so many out there.
But then they shouldn't complain about the added cost. If they do that they're assholes anyway. No pity for them. And I don't think that's exactly the kind of people we were originally talking about.

I assumed we were just talking about bootleggers in general.
