Maybe the petition did help.? Yet, do you think it's partly "timing" with Izzy, as well?? The whole commotion about VR is at a lull right now, with their tour being done.? He could have released it earlier, but it would have come out about the time of Contraband and GnR Greatest Hits.? I don't think he wants to take any chances that it would ever become a huge album.? I'm not being negative about him.? I have a lot of respect for him, but I can definitely see in him that he plays and records music because it's his life and that he doesn't want the insanity that fame can bring.? I think he wants to release a CD for his own fans to appreciate and not take the chance that it would be more than that because he doesn't want it to be that way. ? ?And that's ok - nothing wrong with that.? ?

Very good news. I hope it is not going to be too hard to get a copy. 975 promos is not very many. Looks like we all will be fighting for them. ;) That is cool of Izzy to make them available. Not too many people would do that with such a limited quantity.

Hi NYD, was it hard for you to contact Izzy? I wonder if people can send him fan mail.
On the other hand, If we can't can you make a list of questions that some of us can tell to you, in order to ask him? Thanks NYD, have fun, and please reply as soon as you can.

Thanks nyd  :)

Chop Away is my favorite song so far.  And I love Bomb, and Rollin On.

I have to say, it really hit me how much Izzy contributed to VR.  This album has that written all over it.

I recently discovered that 'Hammerhead'  is great when you're stuck in traffic.  When he sings, 'here we go - DRIVE!', you can pretend you're racing down an open road into the sunset instead of crawling on the freeway at 5 mph.  Izzy's got some cool vocal melodies throughout the album.

Do you like the CD?  ;D

I know your question wasnt directed to me  ;D

If you liked Contraband, you'll like this album too.  But 'Like A Dog' has better production/mixing/etc than CB, imo.  The vocals arent so muddy.  It's not a mind-blowing album, but there's some good tracks.

I'm wondering if Izzy didnt release it because it would be too obvious that he contributed to Contraband....?

Guys CB and Like A Dog are too diferent albums, but in my opinion LAD is way better...

Title: Re: UPDATE FROM IZZY - The dog is being cut loose
Post by: badapple81 on November 20, 2005, 06:32:12 PM
He wrote with the band when they were originally forming, before Scott joined I believe? ????

So maybe some of his ideas ended up sticking with Slash, Duff and Matt and being on the album.. I don't know. But he didn't actually play on the album.

I'm really keen to hear this album now after your reply. Others have said it sounds like CB too. I really liked the clip from Hammerhead.

No ideas of Izzy are on Contraband. The 10 songs Izzy did with VR where actually recorded in a profesional recording studio down the block from the rehearsel space right before the vocalist audition of Kelly Shaefer. He had to wait a few hours when he flew in to audition cause the others where recording.

Scott also said that he wasn't inspired by Izzy's stuff, it sounded to classic rock for him..

And imo Like A Dog sounds nothing like Contraband and it beats Contraband in every way. LAD is the real return of rock n roll..

and place some of the blame of Izzy leaving on Him

No ideas of Izzy are on Contraband.

But I'm not the only person who thinks that 'Bomb' sounds like a Contraband song.  Even you said that in the other Izzy thread  ;) : "Yeah it does, maybe it's from Izzy's time with VR. But Bomb sounds better!" -- IzzyDutch.

I think CB was just mixed 'differently' from LAD so that's why CB sounds more like modern rock whereas LAD sounds like hard rock n' roll.

And just to emphasize in bold, IN NO WAY am I implying something negative about my perceived similarities between CB and LAD.  I think it's great that Izzy hangs out with Slash & Duff and got them started on their album! So dont take it the wrong way, pleeze...

Also, I dont understand Scott saying that Izzy's material was too "classic".  When I think of "classic" - I think of a 1970's style album, and LAD does NOT sound like a 70's album!  It's definitely rock n roll, but with an updated touch.  I think it's cool, and Izzy has these awesome vocal melodies throughout. Like the part in SNAFU where he sings about cocaine - his melodies are addictive  :)

Izzy contributed something to Contraband? ???

I meant in an unofficial sense.  I gathered as much from the various VR articles that Jarmo has on this site.  For example:

"And then he [Izzy] called up right when we were in the midst of writing, and he actually came over and brought a couple of songs with him. And then we just started hanging out and jamming"  -- Slash from http://www.heretodaygonetohell.com/articles/showarticle.php?articleid=73

Anyway, I wish CB had been produced/mixed the same way that LAD was.

http://vr.belowempty.com/articles/2003/031101_Guitar_World_Magazine.php

While Kushner's predeliction for Fernandes guitars, Bogner heads and a whole arsenal of Line 6 and Boss pedals might seem at odds with Slash's Les Paul-into-Marshall approach, the two guitarists quickly meshed. But when Izzy Stradlin suddenly started showing up at rehearsals, Kushner began to wonder if his days in the band were numbered. "Izzy just came out of nowhere, as Izzy does," Slash says, laughing. "Poor Dave. Izzy's sitting there, this ominous presence, and Dave's thinkin', That's the original guitarist from Guns N' Roses. Am I still gonna have a job? But we're real loyal people. It wasn't like, 'Hey, Dave, we're gonna work on some songs with Izzy; call us back in a couple of weeks!' When Izzy was there, we just played with three guitarists."

Stradlin hung out and jammed with his old mates for several weeks, but Slash and McKagan both say there was never any real possibility of their old guitarist joining their new band. "The Izzy thing probably got misconstrued a little bit," says McKagan. "I think he wanted to come in, like, `Let's go out on tour right away! I've got eight songs, let's go! We'll do some covers; Duff and I will sing!' [laughs] But Matt and Slash and I were more like, 'If we're gonna do this, we're gonna have to do it so it's amazing.' I've heard a lot of fans saying, 'Why don't you have Izzy in the band now?' Well, this isn't cut out for him; he's more of a guy who will be here one day and be gone the next, and you won't know where he's gone to. But he added a new energy that we probably needed at that point." "You have to understand our relationship with Izzy," Slash explains. "Izzy's always been the guy who's sort of there and sort of not there. Duff and I have seen Izzy periodically; I've played on his records a couple of times, and Duff has done the same thing. And then he called up right when we were in the midst of writing, and he actually came over and brought a couple of songs with him. And then we just started hanging out and jamming, and we wrote, like, 10 or so songs. It was just a lot of fun, but he didn't want to deal with the fuckin' long haul at all. As soon as we started to physically audition singers, we didn't see him again." Slash laughs. "He's so fucking shattered from his experience [with Axl] that he refuses to ever do anything involving a singer again!"

"The first CD that Slash gave me had a lot of music that Izzy had written with them, and it was a lot more classic-based," Weiland remembers. "I wasn't as excited about that stuff, you know? But when I got the next batch of songs, it was like, `Okay, there's a handful of songs in here that I definitely feel I can wrap my head around.' And one of the riffs was the 'Set Me Free' riff. It reminded me of a cross between a classic STP thing and a classic GN'R track. I think it was a good song for us to start with - not pushing the envelope too much. You couldn't come out with something too 'out there' or people would be like, `This doesn't make sense!'"

Yeah it does sound much alike, but I think it's more of a co?ncidence.  I don't know... here's what Slash said about DIFTK:

http://vr.belowempty.com/articles/2004/040701_Guitarist_Magazine.php

Do It for the Kids

Dirty rock riff, melodic chorus and a nippy solo
Sample lyric: "Went too fast I'm out of luck/ And I don't even give a fuck"
"That's another riff I brought in and that one was re-hashed by the whole band. It started out with this Middle Eastern vibe but it took on a different light when Scott started singing it so we changed some things around. In the end we took all those bits out and left in the hard parts. It's totally straight Les Paul/Marshall (when Slash says Marshall, he's referring to three Marshall heads blended; his Slash Signature Series model, a mid-eighties JCM800 with 65/50 output tubes and a 1973/1987 model four-input non-master volume head in to a Marshall 100W cabinet). Even the solo is with my regular rhythm sound. It's a fast solo but real clean with no distortion or gain. It's my regular everyday sound."

Izzy has got some great vocal melodies yeah, especially on Bomb and Hell Song he sounds awesome 8) I think Scott thought that Izzy's stuff sounded to much like GN'R and therefore he didn't choose the music.

 this was never about him,

I would say Scott weiland is cool, but I dont blame him for anything cause I know original gunners will someday gather together again, so its not a problem... Slash and the guys would rejoin again at anytime, but Axl he planned all for so many years that will result harder for him to join with his "other friends" again, its sad specially for his relationship with Izzy, and the Izzy - Slash duet... that was cool.

Post by: robert32 on December 08, 2005, 08:23:02 AM
Alright guys, received Like A Dog a couple of days ago.  Took 5-6 weeks.  Not bad I suppose, considering I live in Scotland.

Really good album, no weak tracks at all.  Highlight is undoubtedly track 9: "On The Run".  Although it is, in fact, not a cover of the Pink Floyd instrumental, it is a classic nevertheless.  It has a slight twinge of the Stone Roses about it, really cool.

Very much worth getting your hands on, for those who haven't already placed an order.  The album could maybe do with a couple of more emotional or acoustic tracks (a la Sweet Caress, Got Some News), but otherwise it's a really good effort.

Let's get a petition going for the Izzy/Slash album to get released, together with the Iz's latest solo effort that was recorded earlier this year.

Rob.

If Izzy scores a proper record deal for his next album.....then he'll have to tour behind it right??  :D

I've said it before but I'll say it again.  This album is wonderful to listen to when you're driving.  The feeling from this album of being free, running/driving fast, feeling the wind on your face.  :)

Not really, I don't think he ever will go on tour again. The last tour in 2000 (Ride On in Japan) was more or less anounced as the "farewell tour".

This probably also the reason why he has had some trouble finding record deals. He doesn't care about record sales, he doesn't want to tour and do any promotion of it. The touring is probably cause he likes the freedom and doesn't want any commitment or hassle with it. He wants to go where ever he goes whenever he wants to. I think we might see him guesting with VR or AA a show or two though. The Ride On and On Down The Road deals where distribution deals only in Japan and with River in 2001 he had some friends at the record label.

He had trouble finding a good deal in 2003 with Like A Dog, it probably costed him to much time and hassle that he said forget it. I don't think that he actually realized how many people are listening to his albums and want to hear his stuff. I think the petition of LAD was kind of a wake up call and he basically got rid of the promo copies for the fans. He also said that he was thinking about some cool give-away stuff if this whole LAD thing turned out to be fun. So maybe more unreleased material.

Amen 8) This album has some classic songs on it..

Quote
I've said it before but I'll say it again.? This album is wonderful to listen to when you're driving.? The feeling from this album of being free, running/driving fast, feeling the wind on your face.? :)

Amen 8) This album has some classic songs on it..

after all he could always just make albums directly for the fans and just release the stuff directly onto the internet....

Highlight is undoubtedly track 9: "On The Run".?
That song could work as the sequel for Jump In Now.

He also said that he was thinking about some cool give-away stuff if this whole LAD thing turned out to be fun. So maybe more unreleased material.
I'm crossing my fingers for more unreleased stuff from his basement.

It's not a cover, one of the best on the album, very groove based. You can read the lyrics on the solo albums by ex GN'R section of the site.

Wow, I didn't even notice that Bomb and DIFTK riff, now when I listen to it it's VERY similiar, even the bass and drums are the same  :D

Izzy's version is better :P The vocals on Bomb are awesome.. I think the lyrics are about the Iraqi war. When LAD was recorded the war had just started.

Title: Re: UPDATE FROM IZZY - The dog is being cut loose

lol..we keep coming back to the riff similarity.

so Bomb is about the war in Iraq?  I like that the lyrics are not in-your-face political.  I think the song is more effective that way.

I hadnt checked this board in a while, and I was reading that Dizzy said that Izzy wrote a song about going to the dentist.

Is this true?

If so, I want to hear it.  I bet it would be funny  ;D   Maybe Dizzy doesnt understand humor  ::)

Title: Re: UPDATE FROM IZZY - The dog is being cut loose
Post by: IzzyDutch on February 09, 2006, 04:12:12 AM
I don't think it's true.. Dizzy has no contact with Izzy or other ex members and I doubt he ran into Izzy a few years ago. I think the author of that interview got it from an Axl interview on this site in the article section, where Axl said that getting Izzy to work on UYI was like pulling teeth.

I think that's where the story comes from.. And the thing that "Dizzy" said in the interview about Izzy writing shitty songs, that's probably not true either and if he actually said that its's bullshit ofcours... Izzy wrote classic songs in his solo albums (Sweet Caress for example) and Dizzy... well Dizzy nothing.

However, Izzy did write a song about a parking lot space, he said you know how people get into parking lot spaces "I was here first!" ;D It's Here Before You on 117 degrees. He was gonna call it The Parking Lot Song first he said in an interview.

That's funny Dizzy would say Izzy wrote shitty songs since Dizzy wrote what GnR tunes? :hihi:
