I swear I like the album more and more with every listen. I loved all of the ballads the second I heard them, but I was a little skeptical about the rockers. Finally having got the studio cuts of the album though, they all sound worlds better now that I can hear all of the little details. I think the album is going to go over very well with the general public, as even the stuff that can be considered filler is much stronger than other bands definitions of fillers. It is a really solid record 1-13, and it has been a long time since I can say that about a rock album.

i agree.
sooner or later, whether people like this album or not ....they will respect it (Except dave that is).....only thing is you gotta listen with an open mind, because scott's lyrics are pretty good....obv not as good as axl's but pretty good nonetheless
face it people, they are NOT gnr, they are velvet revolver...think of them as a new band....you' ll end up liking them as well

I agreed, It gets better:

First, I thought it was OK-...,Now I think its good...
Many people says that they are velvet revolver and that we can't compare it with GN'R/STP, but its hard to not do it;

-I think UYI is a much better album (And offcourse Afd too)...

Don't get mad about my comparison between GN'R and Velvet revolver, and not about my "comparision"- spelling either..   hihi

Yeah, even just on my 3rd listen, the chorus melodies are really sticking in my head!

The ones that I were thought were a little bland have really grown on me. I'm loving Do It For the Kids, Big Machine and Illegal I Song at the moment.
I've found the band really shines on songs that sound the least like GN'R, which considering it's 3/5 of the UYI line-up, is quite surprising.

Also, like I said earlier, I really liken this album to Jane's Addiction's Strays album. Contraband is heavy and groovy! beer

I saw a comment another poster said "forcing yourself to listen to the album until it gets better is stupid", which has to the most ridiculous thing I've heard. Some of my favourite albums of all time have been ones that have grown on me. An album doesn't have to be instantly likeable at first listen for it to be great, but that doesn't mean you should dismiss it completely.

If I recall, I didn't like allot of the songs on UYI when I first heard it, but now they are up there with my fav albums.

Okay so I've been dissing the VR songs lately..

I got my copy of Contraband today.. and it rocks the more you listen to it!

Its one of those albums you might not like the first time, but after a few listens, you love it!

Sucker Train Blues is better than Slither!

I think we all didnt like it at first, cos its hard to get used to Scott's plain sounding vocals, after years of listening to Axl's unique sounding vocals.. but im really turning around now and beginning to enjoy VR!

Anyone else liking even more as you listen to it more?

Yep, I'm loving the album more and more with each listen.

Scott's infectious vocal harmonies are what's hooking me in, I can't get the choruses out of my head. beer
