Just read that Contraband was certified Platinum....way to go guys ok. If FTP blows up on the radio which I hope it will(It has been #1 in Cleveland all week so far), then maybe this album will get huge. Regardless a great accomplishment for the band.

Is that certified in the states because I didnt know they sold a million records I thought they only sold around 750,000-800,000. Maybe its for total number of items shipped? I'm sure they have shipped a million by now, The article seems more or less a promotional thing for there website then anything else.

Platinum and Gold plaques are awarded based on the number of albums shipped.  So you can be platinum with 700000 or 800000 sold if you've shipped over a million.  I don't know what the Soundscan numbers are but I'm sure VR has to be close to 1000000 and if they're not there yet, probably will be in the next month.

Here is the article for the lazy people like me:

After letting loose with the first rock album to debut at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 album chart in over a year, VELVET REVOLVER?s CONTRABAND has now already been certified platinum, while the single ?Slither? has held the #1 spot on all rock formats for four weeks straight.? ?Now VELVET REVOLVER has unveiled a new website as dynamic and layered as the band itself.
The expanded and graphically enhanced site was designed by Danny Vinik at Brink Media.? Brink Media was involved in the production of the feature film Spun, helmed by rock video director Jonas Akerlund.? Brink received the 1996 prestigious Netscape/Apple Computer Quicktime Web Challenge award (with Darren Clark and Matthew Bardram) in the QuickTime Virtual Reality category.
The new band website--still found at www.velvetrevolver.com--is comprised of various visually stimulating photo and graphic collages with hidden links contained in the images.? Bullets in the lower left hand corner of the page guide the viewer to different realms of the site.? Each band member has their own personal ?world? on the site, including a journal, which will be continually developed and expanded.? ?
Other sections currently include a live photo gallery, news, bio, music and lyrics, tour dates, videos, download goodies, street team link, fan club link and a store link.
Velvet Revolver?s album Contraband debuted at #1 on the Billboard album chart, selling over 250,000 copies.? Notably, this marks the best-ever debut for a new rock artist in the SoundScan era.? This news comes as the band--lead vocalist SCOTT WEILAND, guitarist SLASH, bassist DUFF McKAGAN, drummer MATT SORUM and guitarist DAVE KUSHNER--is riding a wave of critical acclaim, heavy exposure for their striking video for ?Slither? (MTV, MTV2, VH1, Fuse) and rave reviews for their sold-out shows across the country.? Rolling Stone calls the album a ?powerhouse,? Newsweek describes the band as ?truly explosive? and Maxim says, ?Slash and Scott Weiland bring unpredictability back to rock.?? Look for Velvet Revolver to soon announce a major fall tour.

RIAA bases its figures on shipments, not actual sales.  As of July 26, 2004 Contraband has sold 687,491 copies in the U.S.  The Greatest Hits album has sold 997,596 copies in the U.S. as of the same July 26, 2004 chart.

RIAA calculates album sales according to units shipped.? Thus, CDs still sitting on the shelves of CD retail outlets (Tower Records, Sam Goody, etc.) are counted as 'sold'.? ?Album certifications (gold, platinum, diamond) are based upon this system.

In 1991 Soundscan began calculating sales according to actual sales.? So, if you go to the store and buy a CD it is counted as a sold unit, but the CDs sitting on the shelves aren't counted into the figures.

Wow, impressive if it's true. ok

Try to think of another rock band that in the past 10-12 years that has debut and taken over the charts so quickly.  There are none.  Nice going VR!   ok
