Now at award shows they can be introduced as "multi-platinum recording artists... Velvet Revolver!"

Seriously I didn't think they would get double platinum (and I'm still a little skecthy about the situation until I see it on Billboard)... but well done.

it's great but don't exagerate, there is nothing "huge". double platinium is not huge and VR don't fill stadiums.
"huge" is something like gn'r back in the days, 15 times platinium (afd) or 14 times platinium (UYI LP's). that's what I call huge.
"huge" is nevermind (10 times platinium) or "the eminem show" (12 times platinium).

They are not as big as you think. Plus, outside USA, they don't sell many records.

true, that is what 'huge' is, and VRs last tour shows that they aint huge, but "for them" it is a huge success, considering how much this band could have failed commercially.

He said "a huge sucess for them"... He didn't say VR are fucking huge and the album was fucking huge.. This is huge for them considering Contraband sold more than the all the Snakepit records, Loaded, Beautiful Disease, Matt's solo record and the last STP record all together.? Why does there always have to be someone trying to bring a good thing down. Go get some ass or something.... Seriously you need it rather than hovering over these message boards just waiting to bring people down... You know, this is a pretty cool thing and I knew it wouldn't be long before some ******** would try and make it negative...

They were certified 2x platinum 2 years ago (riaa.com)

Contraband is a pretty weak offering in the grand scale of things and 2 million seems pretty good especially in todays climate

I can only say one thing: When selling 2 million copies ain't regarded as a good thing, what the hell is? 2 million people, individuals, souls, persons, humans have used money on a piece of cd, thats good by my standards. If you say that 2 millions ain't huge, be carefull and dont say that in front of the 100 million artists around the world who dream of selling more than 1000 copies of their music..   Wink

Total sales worldwide should be more, so 2 million is a pretty decent no. for a debut album ( even for ex-rockers) ...

plus this is for the US only, and while they might nto have done massive numbers or equivalent numbers outside of the US, i remember a while ago reading they'd sold 3 million worldwide - if you wanted to be cheeky now its done an 'extra million' in the US you could say its done 4 million now! Wink

but i think more likely its about 3 million and maybe abit extra. not too shabby, see where they go with the next album.

For a rock band to go multi-platinum is an incredible feat. Congrats to VR. I just dont understand the animosity people hold against VR on this board. They know who they are no need to drag names up.

It gets old the negativity toward the band. Two million is awesome especially by todays standards. Alot of 'rock' bands would be happy with a gold record let alone a multi-platinum record. Congrats to the band they deserve it. ok

Contraband was released 8th June 2004

It sucks as an album
They clearly made the album for the money (Duff and Slash were clearly running out of cash)
Many bands of smaller stature have sold more albums in a year
2 million isn't that much when you think that the population of America is nearing 300 million, about 40-50 million of those people buy an album on a regular basis

It took over a year to go double-platinum, wow, like that has never been done before

The only other rock bands going multi-platinum in the past few years are bands like U2, Green Day, and Guns N' Roses.  Velvet Revolver are in good company.

It is truly sad that idiots who like to put people down get on these boards and write nonsense.  To call Contraband crap is just stupid.  I feel sorry for those hating on it.  Give it a rest.  Double platinum is great considering that all of our radio stations play crap and music television no longer exists.

Not only that, but you have to consider also for every 1 person that bought the album how many people downloaded it? Another 1? More than 1? Record sales really are no judge of a band's popularity anymore, except when you relate it to what other bands are selling, and on that score there's no denying that Contraband has done awesome. It's a great album by a great band and it deserves to be successful.

Cheers

Bands that have gone double-platinum in a year:

Linkin Parks first album sold some 6 million copies in it's first year
Hootie and the Blowfishes first album went double-platinum in less than a year
AudioSlaves album went double-platinum in a year
Korn's first album went double-platinum in a year
Led Zeppelin's first album went double-platinum in a year
Matchbox 20's debut album went double-platinum in a year
Pearl Jam's debut album went double-platinum in a year
Puddle of Mudd debut album went double-platinum in a year
Stone Temple Pilots debut album went double-platinum in a year
Weezer's debut album went double-platinum in a year

What I'm trying to say that double-platinum isn't that great, many more bands have had bigger success in a shorter amount of time, all of these artists albums sold more than 2 million.

I didn't say Led Zeppelin is inferior, I am a big fan of their work, I was naming bands that's albums went double-platinum in a year or less, did I say they were inferior? No... I like Pearl Jam, STP and Weezer are good in small doses, Audioslave kinda annoy me, I hate Puddle of Mudd, Korn are ok, they aren't really my type of music, I hate Linkin Park, not a fan of Hootie and have not heard enough of Matchbox 20 to judge

For a rock band to come out in 2004 with a number 1 album (on the largest first week sales of a debut album), 2 #1 rock singles, an arena tour, a performance at London's Live 8, etc., etc....  Yeah, I'd consider that great.  Maybe not on the same level as Led Zeppelin or Pearl Jam, but come on, not many bands are.

A lot of people performed at Live 8, so not really that great... Arena tours for a double-platinum band? Why may I ask? VR are acting too big for their boots IMO, has any other band done an arena tour after only selling two million copies of ONE album? Don't think so, not if they dont want a disater waiting to happen

Well it wasn't a disaster... the shows weren't close to being sellouts, but they did draw crowds that were too big for clubs.  And again, where are all these rock bands that are going double platinum?  In the last 5 years how many have there been?  How about we narrow it down to only include new bands... there's maybe 3 or 4?  The Killers are the only recent one I can think of.

Do u really think all the bands were personally invited by Sir Gehldoff to perform at the showcase Hyde Park show? It was a huge deal for VR to get to play that show & deepdown everyone knows it.

U know these haters are getting desperate when they complain that even though VR went multi-platinum, it took too long. GMAFB! hihi

I do not know how anyone can state selling two million albums isn't an acomplishment. If you haven't noticed rock music doens't get the air play it once did. When bands like GnR, Leppard and so on were selling 4 million albums in six months. Those days are long behind us unfortunately. Considering the state of rock music, a rock band going double platinum is a pretty good acomplishment. Hell i think even davegnfnr2k would agree on that.

Not a lot of people were voted the 2nd best act at Live 8 (London). Of course the number 1 was Pink Floyd who hadn't performed together in I don't know how many years.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/music/thelive8event/vote/

I haven't added it up, but it looks like not counting Pink Floyd, Velvet Revolver got more votes than all the other acts COMBINED. (Like if you add the votes for U2 to the votes for Coldplay to the votes for Madonna to the votes for Paul McCartney to the votes for Elton John to the votes for everyone else).  I know everyone understands that, I just like the idea of adding U2 and Coldplay together and getting less than Velvet Revolver.

I don't know if I would agree that the only good performers were Madonna and Pink Floyd.... but I will say that I think that poll is worthless.

What? The poll asking if you saw VR at Live 8?

Probably the one asking what the best band at Live 8 was when VR was voted second best band.....
