Axl Rose Forever

« on: November 26, 2008, 11:17:41 PM »

Now that CD is out, which of these two masterpieces do you think is better? I think the comparison is a fair one. For me, although November Rain is brilliant, it's definately This I Love. It brought tears to my eyes and touched me in a way that no song ever has, not since I first heard Madagascar at RIR3 anyway.

November Rain by far. To be fair I have had 17 years to enjoy that song and about 3 days with TIL.

Wow, nice question, was thinking about this today actually.

Well November Rain is epic and a masterpiece.

For me personally, "This I Love" touches me more actually. "November Rain" is brilliant, taking nothing from it, but in the long haul, I "think" "This I Love" is the song that has moved me more.

I know it's been like what, 4 days or so? Just something very special about TIL that gets me to the core...

Love this song so much

They're both beautiful and meaningful songs. I don't think one is better than the other. They can be appreciated in their own way.

November Rain is so great it practically saved my life. Even though it's about heartbreak, it has a heavy sense of optimism and hope of a better future despite a difficult present situation.

This I Love is totally honest about the dreadful way one feels about an ended relationship. People will relate to that and value its honesty. It doesn't necessarily indicate that things will get better, but it's accurate as to how a person feels when he/she is in that frame of mind. It's sad in a beautiful way.

November Rain by a landslide.

TIL is a good, heart-felt tune that is beautifully written and expertly sang.

But, NR is still in a class by itself, IMO.

November Rain stands alone! This I Love comes no where near and is so minuscule in comparison to the extraordinary song November Rain is!

November Rain has really awesome lyrics. Axl's vocal on This I Love is his best ever. Slash is awesome on November Rain. Finck is awesome on This I Love.

 Undecided

This I Love takes it for me. Been having the worst 3 months of my life, except for Chinese Democracy. Came out two weeks after I split with the mother of my children. This I Love was the song I needed, it is amazing.

I though November Rain was Axl's right of passage toward a musical direction he'd probably had in his head for a long time.

A lot of you probably have it, but I remember hearing stripped down demo versions of NR prior to UYI and thinking, "whoa, piano WTF"?

Then you learned it's Axl playing and it just gave you a new perception of him as a songwriter.  You knew the UYI version was going to epic, and it was.

I will say that the vocal tracks on TIL are so tight and good.  I for one think his vocal work on CD throughout blows away everything he has done to date.

November Rain takes it all the way. Axl Rose's vocals are superior and the song is better lyrically.
November Rain is the most powerful metaphor of any GNR song title (Paradise City is a close second).

Is This I Love about the same model that Axl went with when he wrote November Rain?
I think both songs are songs that Axl shows his 'heart' for someone who he really cared for which is very rare for Axl and many people these days.

Hard to say; don't want to be an ass, but "Estranged".  Tongue

"This I Love" just pips "November Rain" for me. Both are fantastic, but the beautiful guitar solo with harp pieces wins it.

TIL. As a previous poster wrote, I too grew up with NR all over MTV, and i've played it a zillion times in my life BUT ...

I think TIL is more honest, stripped down version of a NR kind of song. No need for super giant production, TIL feels and sounds straight from the heart.

I love it way more than NR now.

The only reason TIL is getting votes IMO is because it is newer. Let's be honest. NR has been played TO DEATH but I know I played it to death for years whereas, I got tired of TIL after about 6 weeks.

NR has an amazing intro, great music, great emotion out of this world all time legendary great guitar solos

TIL has great emotional vocals, musically it isn't on NR's level and lyrically it isn't on NR's level.

TIL stays pretty much the same throughout whereas NR changes and goes places.

TIL solo is also pretty average especially compared to NR.

I know it's somehow a blaspheme, but nowadays I find NR bloated ...

And that's a song I've spined a zillion times in my life peace

It tries too hard compared to TIL. I would love to hear a studio take of NR by the band though.

In fact I would like Brain / Frank to re-record all drums parts from UYI I & II, these days Sorum ruins it all for me.

It's a very difficult comparison.  Seriously, so much time soaking up NR...the video's imagery sticks with the song, and the video's a masterpiece.  Just think of all the memories we have relating to NR...  TIL doesn't have that advantage.  Both are beautiful.  Both are amazing to me.

It will never be as popular as NR because of the lack of a video for it and the lack of airtime videos get on the so called music channels.

RIR III is just fucking perfect

that intro...... some of the greatest singing ever.

Yeah I think with some time TIL will come vary close to the level of November Rain in popularity but I still think NR is the better song.

It will never be as popular as NR because of the lack of a video for it and the lack of airtime videos get on the so called music channels.
In at least a few years i think alot of those things you listed will change.

As much as I LOVE the old band and all of the GREAT music they made including the AMAZING November Rain, I have to say hands down that I personally think This I love is a better song.  As amazing as Slash is on NR, I gotta say that the solo Robin wrote for This I Love is to me the greatest solo ever written.  I did'nt even like This I Love the first time I heard it until the solo started.  My jaw droped to the floor. This song also helped through the breakup of me and my daughters mother.  Thank you for that Axl and Robin.  This song helped me to get over the passions that would'nt die.  Thank you Axl, Robin and the rest of the band.

I have listened to NR for 18 years and am slightly tired of it

TIL i have played 112 times and I am sick of it

Axl's emotive vocals are awesome but the song is nowhere as epic as NR.

NR has the amazing intro, then u have the unmatched guitar solos and then u have the pause and the piano thing of Axl into one of the greatest outros of all time

TIL is kind of bland and repetitve and Robin's solo is like fingernails down a chalk board bad.

Jeez, I thought I was the only one who didn't like that solo. It's the only part that ruins the song. Every time it comes on, I have to lower the volume. It sounds
like someone deflating a cat. Have you noticed that the solo has absolutely no melody? It's like a bunch of random scale notes. The NR solo you can
sing. Try the same with the TIL solo. I bet you can't even remember it.

By the by, before people start, this is not a Robin vs Slash thing.

The solo is embarrassing and just horrible. Robin is one of the worst string benders I've ever heard and most of that solo is a bunch of bends and it has very little movement. I turn the song off during the solo.

Robin's Better and SOD solos are very good.

this one......... No idea why Axl let this end up on the song.

I think it is very unfair to judge a brand new song to something 18 years old and worn out.

Of course people are going to be prisoner's of the moment and select the newest freshest thing.

but let's be real, TIL is nowhere near NR or Estranged or Sweet Child as far as ballads go.

axl's vocals are maybe the best he has ever done, but musically it doesn't approach the above 3.

I don't get the problem with Robin's solo, it is filled with emotion and nearly perfect for the song

Anyway, November Rain is one of the greatest rock songs ever, it is sort of hard for a song that hasn't even been out a year to compete with that.  TIL is a beautiful composition and Axl's vocals are quite amazing on there.  NR has better lyrics and the structure is more unique, and the best music video ever made to accompany it, definitely have to go with NR

The song is just very emotional and very beautiful and Robin has this blazing bad guitar tone with little movement and a bunch of bends that really add nothing to the song.

With November Rain, the guitar solo is epic and Iconic. It takes an amazing song and pushes it further.

The TIL solo doesn't elevate the song, it is just a bunch of filler.

I was at work one day and November rain came on the sound system that played throughout the store.
U know how people get a song stuck in their head and go around singing it all day?

Well, what was weird was, everybody in my section went around all day humming the guitar solo at the end.

that is the difference. NR's solo is a song within a song.

With TIL, Robin at the beginning of the solo is just playing what the orchestra is doing but just on guitar and then it kind of goes from there with little movement or melody

I know I make it seem like the worst solo ever, but TIL is such an incredible song, I don't feel the solo does it justice.

U can't hum Robin's solo and it isn't very pleasing IMO.

The end of NR everybody knows that solo.

If u had TIL piano/orchestra and voice vs NR piano orchestra and voice Id give TIL a great chance
but when u add everything in, NR is the better, more epic song.

Personally I think the second part of the solo that kicks in at 3:15 is pretty awesome.  I'm not the biggest Robin Finck fan in the world, I think that if Bucket would've handled the solo it could've been out of this world but I still dig the solo in this song.
