05.01.12

Inductees Include Beastie Boys, Donovan, Guns N? Roses, Freddie King, Laura Nyro, Red Hot Chili Peppers And Small Faces/Faces

Beastie Boys, Donovan, Guns N? Roses, Freddie King, Laura Nyro, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Small Faces/Faces are among the inductees on the exclusive HBO special 2012 ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME INDUCTION CEREMONY, debuting SATURDAY, MAY 5 (9:00-11:30 p.m. ET/PT). The 27th annual induction ceremony was conducted April 14 at Cleveland?s legendary Public Hall, just steps away from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. The HBO special features long-awaited performances, momentous jams, reunions of former band members and moving speeches from both presenters and inductees.

HBO Signature will present a 24-hour marathon of the HBO special beginning at midnight the same day the special debuts on HBO, and concluding Sunday, May 6 at midnight.

Other HBO playdates: May 10 (7:30 p.m., 3:20 a.m.), 13 (2:00 p.m.), 15 (3:00 p.m., 12:30 a.m.), 19 (5:15 p.m.), 28 (12:10 a.m.) and 31 (1:30 p.m.)
HBO2 playdates: May 12 (6:00 p.m.), 17 (11:45 p.m.), 21 (9:30 a.m., 10:00 p.m.), 25 (5:30 p.m.) and 30 (1:50 a.m.)

USA Today described the live event as ?raucous? and ?star-crossed,? while AP deemed it a ?rowdy celebration.? The New York Times said the night featured ?blistering jams and shaggy dog stories about rockers? early years? while the Cleveland Plain Dealer called it a ?musical extravaganza.?

Among the moments captured in 2012 ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME INDUCTION CEREMONY are:

Beastie Boys were inducted by Chuck D and LL Cool J. Chuck D noted, ?There?s no adequate measure for the impact that the Beastie Boys had on rap music and yours truly, Public Enemy, during our formative years. Artistically, just like my man back here [LL Cool J], they are our role models.? Mike D and Ad-Rock accepted, followed by a performance from The Roots with Mix Master Mike, Kid Rock, Black Thought and Gym Class Heroes? Travie McCoy. Songs in the medley included ?No Sleep ?Til Brooklyn,? ?So What?cha Want,? ?Sabotage? and ?New Style.?

Donovan, inducted by John Mellencamp, performed his classic ?Sunshine Superman? and remarked, ?It?s a singular honor, the grandest searchlight on my music that the world can ever beam.?

Guns N? Roses were inducted by Green Day, with band members Steven Adler, Duff McKagan, Slash and Matt Sorum speaking. Slash said, ?Most importantly, I want to thank the fans. The fans are the ones that made it possible for us to get together tonight.?

Freddie King was inducted by Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill of ZZ Top, who performed with Joe Bonamassa and Derek Trucks on King?s ?Goin? Down.? Accepting the induction for King was his daughter Wanda. Hill observed, ?Playing with Freddie for about a month was like a year of experience with anyone else.?

Don Kirshner was named the recipient of the Ahmet Ertegun Award by Carole King, with his wife, Sheila Kirshner, accepting.

Laura Nyro was inducted by her friend Bette Midler. Her son, Gil Bianchini (aka rapper Gil-T), accepted and delivered a moving speech about his mother. Sara Bareilles performed Nyro?s spirited ?Stoney End.?

Red Hot Chili Peppers were inducted by longtime friend Chris Rock, who called them ?the baddest live band in the world.? The band?s performance included ?By the Way? and ?Give It Away.?

Small Faces/Faces were inducted by Steve Van Zandt, who observed, ?They did a bunch of classic records which defined garage rock at its finest.? Kenney Jones, Ian McLagan and Ron Wood accepted, and Mollie Marriott accepted on behalf of her father, Steve Marriott. They performed their hit ?Stay with Me? with Simply Red?s Mick Hucknall on vocals.

Engineers Cosimo Matassa, Tom Dowd and Glyn Johns were inducted by Robbie Robertson, who asserted the importance of studio engineers, noting, ?The sound of records has played a huge part in the story of rock and roll.? John Matassa, Jr. accepted on behalf of his grandfather and Dana Dowd accepted on behalf of her father.

The Blue Caps, Comets, Crickets, Famous Flames, Midnighters and Miracles were inducted by Smokey Robinson, who said, ?The bands don?t stand behind us ? we stand together, we play together. The groups don?t sing back-up ? their harmonies make the song whole.?

The HBO special also features Green Day performing a kinetic rendition of their song ?Letterbomb,? an ?In Memoriam? segment, with Ledisi singing a touching version of the Etta James classic ?At Last,? and an all-star jam of Stevie Wonder?s ?Higher Ground? at the end of the show, featuring Red Hot Chili Peppers with Billie Joe Armstrong, George Clinton, Slash and Ron Wood. Paul Shaffer and members of the CBS Orchestra served as back-up band for several of the night?s performances.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation was established by legendary record executive Ahmet Ertegun and a group of music business executives to honor the artists that have defined rock and roll and have inspired and continue to inspire a generation. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, Inc. is the nonprofit organization that exists to educate visitors, fans and scholars from around the world about the history and continuing significance of rock and roll music. It carries out this mission both through its operation of a world-class museum designed by I.M. Pei in Cleveland, Ohio that collects, preserves, exhibits and interprets this art form and through its library and archives as well as educational programs. For further information, please visit rockhall.com.

HBO presented the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?s 25th anniversary special in 2009 and a concert spectacular celebrating the opening of the museum in Cleveland in 1995.

2012 ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME INDUCTION CEREMONY is produced by Playtone, Tenth Planet Productions and Line By Line Productions. Executive producers are Jann Wenner, Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman, Joel Gallen and Joel Peresman; Rick Austin produces; Joel Gallen directs.

the show was 5 plus hours, so they're going to have to cut a lot out.

I've got a feeling the Performance by Slash & the gang won't be shown... in the blurb about the show it states -

Guns N? Roses were inducted by Green Day, with band members Steven Adler, Duff McKagan, Slash and Matt Sorum speaking.

There is no mention of the songs they played, whereas the other bands songs are listed. Would be a shame, but I expected it as Axl wants no association between GN'R & Slash...It certainly would've been good promotion for Slash feat Myles.

I hope performance footage isn't restricted because of any legal wrangling, that wouldn't be cool.

Rock Hall Broadcast: Dedicated to Adam Yauch of Beastie Boys

May 04, 2012

An HBO spokesperson tells Billboard.com that the show's ending has been changed to include a photo of the rapper and musician -- who passed away on Friday at the age of 47, following a nearly three-year battle with cancer -- with text that reads "In Memory of Adam Yauch." The two-and-a-half-hour show had already been altered to include Levon Helm and Dick Clark during the In Memoriam section, even though both died during the week following the event.

Must admit, minus Axl missing on vocals, that sounded pretty damn good.  Steven Adler was impressive and surprisingly fantastic.  Axl would have made that monumental.

They played Sweet Child O' Mine and Paradise City on the broadcast.

Considering this could possibly be the last time Slash, Duff, Steven/Matt play together -- seeing that in HD was really something special. Smiley

Well that sucked,  they only showed the boy's induction speeches and that was it. No performance at all.  They even cut out parts of their speeches.

The Chilli Peppers were great, Flea was quite emotional, he's a very humble man.

The show was pretty good overall, I was just disappointed  with no performance from the boys.
