Title: Axl-50 Cent
Post by: missing on October 20, 2007, 05:13:09 PM
So I was listening to the Linkin Park/Jay Z album with my friend the other day, and I started thinking about if GNR were to do something similar with their music with a current rap star who would it be. It's no secret Axl is a big fan of 50, so I started thinking about a GNR/50 Cent album that would be some interesting mixes. I know I would buy it, plus it would be a great way to use the library of GNR music. What do you all think?

For Gods Sake No!
It would destroy the GNR image of being rockers
and it would destroy classic rock!

I never heard Axl say anything about Him being a fan of 50 cent. Did he ever say anything about that?

50cent is so gay.

I don't remember if he said it, but it sounds familiar to mee tough. And I don't judge him, I actually like the fact that his musical taste isn't that narrow. It brings all kinds of elements to Gn'R..

I dunno, it could be interesting to see what could come out of the collaboration. It's no secret Axl's always been a fan of rap. If he had to collaborate with a rapper, I think it might be interesting to see what they could do with Nas, he's a great rapper. And for curiosity's sake, I'd love to see what would happen if GNR and Kanye West went into the studio. I absolutely hate the guy, but he writes great lyrics and has an uncanny ability to create fantastic melodies/hooks...

I forgot to mention, couple of years ago, there were rumors floating around on some rap sites that Nas did in fact record with GNR, but it was never proven/disproven...

Title: Re: Axl-50 Cent
Post by: CSS on October 20, 2007, 09:32:31 PM
That would be entertaining! :hihi:

Seriously, it could be interesting if Axl (or any GN'R member) would do something more "deep" and serious with some rapper.

Would it have to be with 50 Cent? Of course not, and I can't really see that one happening either.

But if it's good, it's good. And if it's crap, it's crap.

I'm for a GNR-Rap collaboration that has been a long time in the making in Axl's mind (since discussions with Ice T in 1990).
Velvet Revolver did a Paradise City collab with Cypress Hills on the Jimmy Kimmel show and that is one of my favorite videos on You Tube because it sounds great and rhymic.

I don't think 50 Cent is a wise choice.  Dr. Dre would be my pick.

You could call that a long time in the making, or you could call it an idea that was mooted years ago and never developed.  Musicians have ideas about projects that never get beyond the "this would be cool" phase - would Axl be any exception?  I think not.

Axl's already dipped his hand in rap rock. It's called Get In The Ring and it's embarrassing.

50 Cent is a far better suggestion than some that have been floating around in this thread. Kanye West? Andre 3000? 50's much more suited to the challenge.

It's both. It's rhythmically precise and the language used clearly indicates he was inspired by rap music.

Because really good musicians often don't make really good music together. Hence the failure of Prince and Michael Jackson's collaborations. 50 is far more atuned to heavy rock, even if he is an inferior musician.

Do you have any source to back up that statement or is it just a theory?

Because I don't think that it sounds anything like rap - not even when talking about influences.

It just sounds like a speech to me, but he kinda "sings" instead of speaking...

No, it's an empirical statement, I wasn't attributing it to anybody.

Feel free to disagree, but the entire song sounds as if it's influenced by 80s hip hop, and I wouldn't be surprised if there is some interview that backs up my opinion. The "why do you look at me..." and "I don't like you..." parts, in my mind, are reminiscent of lazy east coast rap melodies; his choice of words in the rant clearly resemble the speech patterns used in hip hop at the time, and also I'm right.

I have no problem with collaborations (so long as GNR doesn't become a rap-rock outfit  :nervous:), but this band is a rock legend, and should collaborate with artists of equal stature.  50 Cent is not in that category.  Ice Cube or Chuck D or someone like that...it could be cool.  There'd be a backlash from all the rock fans who never got into rap (you know...back when it was good and edgy), but Axl doesn't strike me as one who's afraid to push the envelope.  That said, so many have done this now, for good or ill, that it's not really all that creative or interesting, anymore.

If you're desperate to hear something like this, Duff had that rap song on his first album.

New GnR is way closer to Classic Rock than it is to Rap.

Rap sucks, GnR does not.  Its that simple.  GITR is NOTHING like rap.  In fact, it's one of my favorites.  And I hate rap with a passion.  It never even occured to me that is was rap-like.  I dont even consider rap to be music.

As for the death of rock, i say it was Nirvana.  From Nirvana on, it was never quite the same.  And now we're stuck w/ crap.  Nickelback.....  Give me a break.

Actually, since Nirvana it's all the same in mainstream... assholes crying about the problems of boyhood... as far as my taste goes, the last good band on mainstream was Audioslave and they're over, so everything pretty much sucks now. If i try real hard i'll think of something worth listening to  on the radio nowadays, but nothing comes to mind now... Thank the almighty for metal bands or there'd pretty much be nothing... some of u guys should check it out... you'd be considering Axl + Dark Tranquility or Slayer instead of fantasizing him with this 50cent asswipe

Fuck 50 or Emenim. Axl should rap with the real underground rapper and he is known as IMMORTAL TECHNIQUE. Listen to this motherfucker and you will forget about all fake rappers that you see on MTV.

New GnR is way closer to Classic Rock than it is to Rap.?

Rap sucks, GnR does not.? Its that simple.? GITR is NOTHING like rap.? In fact, it's one of my favorites.? And I hate rap with a passion.? It never even occured to me that is was rap-like.? I dont even consider rap to be music.

As for the death of rock, i say it was Nirvana.? From Nirvana on, it was never quite the same.? And now we're stuck w/ crap.? Nickelback.....? Give me a break.

You misunderstood what I wrote.  I was just saying that the new G N' R sound takes their sound to a completely different place from classic rock....never said it was rap.  All I was saying is that if you guys can tolerate the drastic changes in the sound of this band from AFD all the way to the CD leaks, then you can surely tolerate a few rap collaberations.

There'd be a backlash from all the rock fans who never got into rap (you know...back when it was good and edgy), but Axl doesn't strike me as one who's afraid to push the envelope.
Well it's about 20 years too late to regard fusing rap and rock as "pushing the envelope", but it would definitely be an unpopular move (as demonstrated by the "rap sucks" comments in this thread), and we all know Axl has no qualms about alienating his fans.

Maybe it's because I started listening to Eminem again, but I'll actually agree, Axl and Eminem collaborating would be pretty cool.

Did it kill Aerosmith when they joined up with Run DMC?

RunDMC are 50 times more respectable than 50Cent

He'd be the ONLY rapper who i would be excited to hear a song with. Eminem knows how to write and deliver great lyrics, him and axl would come up with cool shit for sure. As for 50cent, that would just be an embarresment, he's really shitty IMO.

first off eminem made fun of axl in a video.....2nd off, axl should do a song with the beastie boys..not even a rap song..a hardcore type song, etc..the beasties have made it clear they are sick of rap right now and moving back into playing instruments, and the next record is gonna have instruments with vocals like check your head....axl doing a gratitude type song would be badass

Axl should also collaborate with none of these 'rappers' and get back to the times when he'd roll with rock n roll people such as Alice Cooper and such... collaborating with Baz is already signs of inteligence... Fuck Rap, i think if axl did any kind of work with 'fitty' it'd be the first time i would NOT like a song with axl in it

someone please kill this thread. I believe one reason why we don't have cd yet is exactly a result of people who think like this. 50 cent give me a break.

He would have to. Eminem isn't a stupid person, he must have some sort of respect for Axl's talent. To me, the dressing like him was a sign of GNRs popularity at the time. Alot of people were talking about GNR because of the VMA spot and I'm sure showing up as GNR on another MTV show was seen as cool.
