Izzy's Lyrics
«

Hey,
Anyone have a definitive list to which songs Izzy Stradlin' wrote lyrics to for Guns N' Roses songs? The following are well known:-
Pretty Tied Up
Bad Obsession
14 Years
Dust N' Bones
You Ain't The First
Double Talkin' Jive
Mr. Brownstone
Think About You
Patience
Move To The City
Used To Love Her
I've also thought the following were quite possibly his, at least in part:-
You Could Be Mine
Nightrain
You're Crazy
Any others?
Cheers,
Rob.

The lyrics for "Nightrain" were written by Duff and Axl.
The lyrics for "You Could Be Mine" were indeed written by Izzy, about an ex-girlfriend of his.
The lyrics for "Reckless Life" were written by Axl and Izzy.
You're correct about all the other ones.
These AFD songs featured lyrics written or cowritten by Izzy...
Out Ta Get Me -
Lyrics : Rose, Stradlin'
Mr. Brownstone -
Lyrics : Stradlin'
Think About You -
Lyrics : Stradlin'
You're Crazy
Lyrics : Rose, Stradlin'
Anything Goes -
Lyrics : Stradlin', Rose

Interesting. Just though Nightrain might have been Iz's due to the subject content... getting wasted. Also the phrasing is very similar to his style. Just out of interest, where did you pick up this information? Are there any other songs on Use Your Illusion that Izzy had any part in writing the lyrics to (Don't Cry, maybe)?
Also, do you have a list of who wrote the music to each of the songs on AFD?
I know the following:-
It's So Easy (McKagan/Arkeen; not sure which one wrote the music and which the lyrics)
Mr. Brownstone (Stradlin')
Think About You (Stradlin')
Sweet Child O' Mine (Slash/Stradlin'; lyrics: Rose)
Cheers,
Rob.

In terms of alcohol, back in the day, yes. In terms of drugs generally would obviously be Steven. Izzy wasn't too fair behind either of them back in the day. Look at him in the Melbourne '88 video. He's completely out of it during the Patience intro.
Nowadays there's only really Slash who finds himself under the influence of anything. Still likes a drink and a smoke. Duff smokes, but no drink or drugs. Axl doesn't smoke or do drugs, but does drink. Steven has given up heroin now, at least. Would be good to here he was free of everything else too, but I can't say for certain. Izzy, meanwhile, doesn't drink, smoke, do drugs or even caffine. :-)
Cheers,
Rob.

Just out of interest, where did you pick up this information?
The AFD writing credits came out of a 1988 issue of Metal Hammer, and the UYI credits I got from various interviews from the band members over the years.

Yes, Izzy wrote the lyrics to the original version of "Don't Cry" and Axl wrote the alternate version's lyrics. I forgot about that one.

According to a recent posting on a Slash site, he is trying to quit smoking. There was a thread about that a few months ago.

initial

Axl's version of the lyrics just didn't compliment the song as well as Izzy's did I don't think. Izzy's seemed to tell a story...

I concur. I don't like the alternate version of "Don't Cry" and that's one of the prime reasons.

With regard to those credits for the songwriting on Appetite For Destruction, are the composer's listed in any particular order (i.e. order of contribution)?
Do you have a complete list of who wrote the lyrics to each track on Use Your Illusion?
Cheers,
Rob.

If Izzy wrote Don't cry and Axl wrote Don't cry (alt lyrics) how come the UYI booklets give writing credits to both of them on both versions, i'm confused

Because Axl composed the vocal melody, so he gets credit for both version, and Izzy composed the chords, so he gets credit on both versions. The writing credits are for the music also, not just the lyrics.

What about on You Could Be Mine? That is another Stradlin'/Rose composition that Izzy wrote the lyrics to. What was Axl's contribution. Was he involved in writing the music, the melody or did he just help Izzy out a little. I've always thought Axl may have written the last verse.

It's been awhile, but I'm sure that I read that Izzy wrote the lyrics, I assume that meant all of them. He wrote them about an ex-girlfriend of his.
I'm sure Axl composed the vocal melody, he's good with those, as most singers are. And Izzy wrote the chords, no doubt.

I think the lyrics to the original version is more of a 50/50 thing. Here's some quotes taken from GnRinfo.tk:
Axl: It was the first song written for Guns N' Roses. Actually we weren't Guns N' Roses yet, but we were starting to become a reality, and Izzy and I wrote a song and we decided we needed to get back together
Axl: It was [about] a girl that Izzy had gone out with, and I was really attracted to her, and they split up, and we wrote the song.
Axl: I was sitting outside the Roxy, and you know, I was like really in love with this person, and she was realising this wasn't going to work, she was doing her things, she was telling me goodbye, and I like sat down, and just started crying, and she was telling me 'don't cry'. Next night we got together and wrote the song in 5 minutes. He'd been through some things with her, himself.
And concerning Slash and his involvement on Rocket Queen, where is that from? I have quotes about RQ, but all points in the direction that it's all Axl/Izzy. And same with Sweet Child. Slash wrote the riff at the start, but I think Izzy did the rest of the music (possibly with Axl)
