Title: GNR picture book (Reckless Road)
Post by: acompleteunknown on May 14, 2007, 11:59:31 AM
Sounds cool.  Sorry if this has already been posted.  (ps.  great matzoh ball soup at Canter's deli!)

GUNS N' ROSES: New Photo Book Coming Soon

According to a posting on former GUNS N' ROSES drummer Steven Adler's official fan site, a new GUNS N' ROSES picture book will be published soon featuring photography by one of the band's closest friends from the early days, Mark Canter. "Back in the day, Mark's dad owned Canter's Deli, where GN'R would hang out and could always find a meal with whatever change they had in their pockets," the posting reads. "Mark took countless pictures of the band which, until now, have been unpublished. Steven said it was so great hanging with Mark again, who not only brought dozens of old photos of the band, but a famous Canter's pastrami sandwich as well!"

At least i have balls to say what everyone else here think....
And yes you can delete my post but you know i'm right .

Instead of keepin' talk about nothin' ... We've got a newer version of Chinese Democracy:it's amazin' .. wel you can choose not to listen it and wait for the final version but ?it's your choice.

But if you visit this forum every fuckin' day for almost 5 year(like ) and you get the news of the leak on another site ....

well i think HereTodayGoneToHell owes more respect to us.

Do you think this is a proper behaviour hel by this forum' s administrator???

oh new songs big deal
a) they are songs we have heard before only slightly different
b) its always been this sites policy not to allow leaks as they are illegal
c) again they are illegal and not suposed to be out
jarmo and co have had a good arangement with gnr thats how they swung us pre-release tickets etc and if he starts endorsing things the band do not want to admit exist those bonuses will dissapear

and other news is still relevent as well

Post by: cyllan on May 14, 2007, 04:17:44 PM
My initial reaction on reading the words "GNR picture book" was flipping 'eck, they really are going for the younger market now, as I grappled with the idea of a GNR colouring book complete with sketches of the band all waiting to be felt-tipped in.  Fortunately on re-reading it, I came to my senses and realised what a pillock I was.   ;D

Nevertheless, I do have a sense of unease that this is only the start of a tidal wave of people ready to cash in on the re-emergence of Guns.  Part of this could be because it was posted on Steven's site and it seems that every time I see an interview with him, he's trying to recapture the past.  So, maybe I'm tarring this guy with the same brush and overreacting a little.  I realise that we're all just trying to make a living but hate it when people see Axl as an easy target to make money out of.  It's just that having lived through the days when you couldn't move for shoddy, unauthorised GNR merchandise/memorabilia popping up every 5 minutes, I kinda like the fact that Axl's face isn't on every magazine, poster, badge etc etc.  What is it they say about familiarity breeding contempt...

Don't misunderstand me, I want nothing less than CD to be a critical success for the lads and for them to get the recognition they rightly deserve for making such outstanding music, but I'm not looking forward to GNR becoming the 'flavour of the month' band again, which I believe is inevitable when CD is released.  That kind of adulation seems cheap somehow and I feel that GNR are worth so much more.

Sorry if I sound a old grump - and have wandered hopelessly off topic - it's just that at the moment it feels sort of special to be one of the few who know the secret of how great CD is going to be (and that's only from hearing the tracks played live) and it's going to be hard to share it with the johnny-come-lately types of this world.

Let's make one thing clear right here, right now.

I'm not gonna change my principles or start disrespecting the band in order to get more visitors.

If you're here to find illegal leaks, you're in the wrong place.

If you're here to bash the band or their fans who support them, you're in the wrong place.

People think  we ban everybody but the truth is, you have to be really stupid to get yourself banned from here.

Yes, I think acting like a tough guy on a message board is stupid. You get warned and you keep doing it. Not very smart.

The rules are clear, yet we have people come here to question them and question how we run this place.

That's not very clever either....

Then they run off to some other place and cry about how mean we are.

Well put, Jarmo.

I've been on/off GNR boards for 11 years and have seen a lot of weird shit.

The hordes of crazy, infantile posters who bitch and bitch and bitch sometimes takes even me by surprise. I thought I'd seen and heard it all. But no.

HTGTH is run by Jarmo and there are a couple of admins. They do one hell of a job and put a lot of time in to it. If you can't behave within the veeeery large sphere that's given.. later, alligator.

The funny thing is.. for confirmed GNR news.. there's only one place to look up. You're there now.

Another thread gone from good to bullshit in less than sixty seconds. TALK ABOUT THE BOOK, NOT THE LEAKS! At least it's SOME news, albeit small. Unseen pictures are always good, especially from the Good Ol' Days. (I hate to have missed them, even though I love the nu-GnR just as much.)

Title: Re: New GNR picture book (Reckless Road)
Post by: acompleteunknown on May 14, 2007, 11:40:00 PM
Even though I started this topic about the book...I wanted to make a comment about the leaks.

I'm a big fan of listening to demos.  I love to listen to different versions of a song to hear the progression of a track.  I think there's a very personal attachment that's formed when listening in this manner...

That said, I do a lot of writing for a living.  I'm by no means anyone important and barely any of my work-to-date is notable.  But from a personal perspective, nothing kills me more than letting someone read my material before I've finished.   Unless it's someone I'm directly working with or I need notes on a section, I never let anyone read what I'm doing...even my wife.  I was trying to look at this from Axl's POV.  If I was working on a project that wasn't completed and it somehow leaked and everyone was reading it, I would be very crushed.   But as bad as that would be, I think I would be even more frustrated if the entire world was discussing whether my unfinished work was good or not.  It's rough draft, I may be experimenting with something...or I'm using something as a placeholder.  I would hate to have my material judged after being taken completely out of context.  Finally,  to top it off, when people are talking about leaked material that will only influence other people who haven't seen the work to go and seek it out...

I know it's not HTGH's job to stop the leaks...but it's not their job to encourage it either.

Great post regarding the 'l' word, acompleteunknown, and may I just say that I completely agree with you on this matter and that the only leeks I'm interested in are the ones in my veg patch.

Back on topic of the book, this chap does get a mention in the album thank yous, but it's not UYI but Appetite:

"Marc Canter - without you?"

Still doesn't fill me with enthusiasm though I'm afraid; I'd much rather have more photos of a present-day Axl - for one thing it doesn't make me feel so old...  ;)

...and for another I think he's still "devilishly handsome", to use the words of Tommy 'The Nightmare' Smith.   ;D

A little more about the book just for HTGTH - I got to see dozens of the pics, and they are amazing. There's pics of the guys where they can't be more than 16. There's a pic from the session for Appetites' back cover, and Mark Canter is sitting right there with them - wearing Slash's top hat!
Also, Mark created a dvd press kit for the book, by the way I don't remember the exact title but it's something like "The Road to Destruction: the Making of Appetite for Destruction" - but that's not it exactly, I'll get it for you soon. Anywayz on the apx 10min dvd they interview Slash, Duff, Robert John, Vicki Hamilton, Tom Zutaut and others. It's slickly designed and I believe the book will have an August release.

I hope they have some good pictures of Axl and Izzy together.  Those guys really balanced each other well -- both as friends and musical collaborators.

It'd be sweet to see some pictures of those two back in the day.  Back before fame and expectation kinda changed everything.  Back when they were just two hungry kids who wanted to play in a rock band.

Marc Canter witnessed the creation of Guns N' Roses and photographed every gig the band played on the Sunset Strip. With nearly a thousand never-before-seen photos, original gig memorabilia, hand-written song lyrics and and exclusive interviews with over 20 people, Reckless Road chronicles the formation of Guns N' Roses and the creation of their seminal groundbreaking rock album, Appetite for Destruction.

Reckless Road leaves a well-documented legacy few bands can boast.

You can choose your own cover out of the 5 original members of GN'R. The book costs $30 and will ship on September 10, 2007. Thanks to axlfinck at cd.com.

Sounds cool.? Sorry if this has already been posted.? (ps.? great matzoh ball soup at Canter's deli!)

Steven said it was so great hanging with Mark again, who not only brought dozens of old photos of the band, but a famous Canter's pastrami sandwich as well!"

that's cool, I have two books already with robert john and then there's one with an asian photographer of old pics as well.. Always nice to see pics of wehn the bad was a band and struggling having a good time.. At least to me that's more exciting then seeing pictures of a made up millionaire with diamonds.. Always something great a bout seeing a band you love from their starting point when it was about music and having fun, hungry to make it somehow.. Raw really..

Cool to see, Theres a progression of tats on Axl and all minus the AFD cross.. now THATS interesting to see. I know he wasn't born with it (duh) but after seeing him with it for so long it's a bit wierd to see him without it. In some of the pics does Slash seem to have less curly hair early on, or is it just me?

Cool stuff though. I'll probably look it out on release.

About Slash, I just think his hair was a little shorter at that time, he was like 20 or something. Ready to take over the world! :peace:

Pretty cool audio samples too (but very short): http://gnrfrance.free.fr/audio/reckless-road-sample01.mp3 and http://gnrfrance.free.fr/audio/reckless-road-sample02.mp3 (converted from aiff to mp3)

Anybody have problems getting these vids to work? I tried watching them via the website and all I got was sound, no video. Any help?

Thanks ;)

Just bought the Axl cover, considering he's all that's left I thought it appropriate. I am excited about this book. I have to say, and this isn't trying to be a troll, I seriously felt the Slash cover was more GN'R to me than any of the others and I felt bummed for a minute with that realization. I am not even a huge Slash fan, I never bought into Snakepit and I thing VR is generic and boring. But the image of Slash for me is a big part of the GN'R identity still to this day. I know Axl can make amazing GN'R songs with the new guys, and to me it's still GN'R.? Regardless, those old days must have been mind blowing to experience. I always thought the reunion talks were a waste of time but even I must admit watching that trailer made me long to see the originals together again.

It would appear to be so, but I'll contact the publisher to see whether it's really the case or not.

Here's the official word directly from the publisher:

"We want to make each book have clear additional value beyond a printed book. Reckless Road will have additional material on each two page spread.
Sometimes audio. Sometimes video, or both. They will average 30 to 60 seconds some longer. We have over 5,000 images from this "story" of which we only placed around 1,000 in the printed book. I'm estimating there will be another 400 images included for every registered owner. Plus there are some surprises for the book owners and fans that.... well, we just have to wait.

(...)

By the way we are producing a Reckless Road Video and Audio version of the book. Both will have their own merits and their own unique value. Besides the photo archive I think we have some 12 hours of new high definition video, 100 hours of original audio and 20 hours of original, low tech late 80's style video.
The stuff is cool BTW."

(bold mine)

So the samples will stay samples, but we'll have more and on top of that hundreds more pics for those who buy the book. Sounds pretty cool to me!
I'm guessing they won't share all the audio and video material (lol), but probably some on those video and audio versions. Can't wait to get those too! I'll see with him if they have clearance from the band (I think they do from Slash and Duff since the photographer is a friend of Slash...but from Axl??), and also if it'll be available in stores outside the US (except online of course).

Can't wait 'til september!

this for sure will be a very nice release, awesome. i have a little problem with the trailer though....Marc Canter says exactly this in there:

"when someone's open this book and starts to read it i want them to feel that they are there live watching the show!"

nice idea but aint it way easier to get this feeling when releasing some of the "20 hours of original, low tech late 80's style video"?? : ok:

Title: Re: New GNR picture book (Reckless Road)
Post by: Limulus on July 30, 2007, 02:16:50 PM
yeah, but check reply #31 in this topic, could be some insider:

"....Also, Mark created a dvd press kit for the book, by the way I don't remember the exact title but it's something like "The Road to Destruction: the Making of Appetite for Destruction" - but that's not it exactly, I'll get it for you soon. Anywayz on the apx 10min dvd they interview Slash, Duff, Robert John, Vicki Hamilton, Tom Zutaut and others...."

more like the trailer, huh? so probably "evil" live footage teasers not coming out to fans as usual :hihi:

Ok guys, I got more cool info, once again from the publisher:

(me) Will the book be available for purchase in stores outside the US, or only online?

"Yes some German and Japanese Publishers are bidding right now. And no matter what we are planning translations in German, Spanish, French, Portugese and Japanese."

About the band (former Gunners and Axl) being cool about the whole thing:

"We're cool! :-) Axl looked at the manuscript a few years ago and removed only two images. He's seen it. Everyone else that's a character in the book has signed off."

All that sounds pretty fuckin good to me!! :)

I feel dumb right now but how are they going to include audio and video content in a book?  Will they include links to a website or something?

In portuguese too? so damn cool!  : ok:

At recklessroad.com it shows ShootHip Press (the publisher) and enhancedbooks.com as links at the bottom of the page. If you go to enhancedbooks it gives you "Freviews" of other books they have. I'm sure the concept will be similar for this book.

That's good that Axl is onside, Because they had a great chance with BTM but with axl actually ok with it,maybe we will finally hear the whole truth from someone elses point of view besides the band themselves.

if it was the best of Playboy photos... maybe I'd give a fuck.... but who wants to see axl, slash, izzy, adler, duff photos AGAIN.

For those who are interested the book will give you a fresh perspective of what it was like trying to break into the scene over 20 years ago.

It's good to look back 20 years ago today - the pictures give a good idea of how it really was.

Its more than just seeing pics of band again.  It chronicles the beginning of one of the greatest bands of all time.  Most of us only know the band from the time they began to garner national success.  The book represents a history story told in pictures and certainly of backstory behind many of the pictures will be told in words.  With the extra video and audio that we'll get access to I think this is a great product.

Well I think I'll be getting the one with all five of the lads on it. Even though Slash is my favourite member of the original line-up. I felt that if I just got that one,  I would be for some reason not recognising the others. These five together made the album and I just personally feel it should be a cover with all of them all on it. But obviously people can get the limited edition covers.

Nope.

This book is hot off the press.

It maybe hot of the press, but from what I have seen, its all about the old band.

I agree,
its the old band,
I say let sleeping dogs lie,
yes it would be good to see images and stuff of the old band,
but thats in the past,
Save your money and buy an extra copy of chinese democracy when its released to show your support for the new band,

Why is this a topic of discussion?
The Guns N' Roses board encompasses everything about "Guns N' Roses" from the eighties until now, as long as it hasn't been discussed before it goes here, otherwise it goes in dead horse. This is a Guns N' Roses book, not some side project or former member specific publication.

Learn how the board works will ya?

Since the pre-sale for those special covers is over anyways, I'd hold off ordering this book until peoples actually start receiving their orders.

Shipping was supposed to start around the 10th of September for orders placed in early August.

To date, I don't think anyone has received their copy.

Here's what the publisher just emailed people who ordered the book:

Hello Everyone,

This is an update with more detail than you are likely to want but I'm responding to more than just shipping details for your books. So I've taken the liberty of a bulleted response for questions you may have asked. In addition there are some explanations so you can see more clearly what has been happening and is happening. Many of you I have spoken to so this may be redundant for you.

My role:
I chose to facilitate by hand some shipping and communications. At this point the shipping and fulfillment house in Texas is taking over. My efforts, while meant to help you, have begun to imped the process and perhaps introduce some errors. So, I've been fired from this part of the effort. Happily by the way and you will be the benefactors.

I was able to ship directly slightly over 100 units but I had very few of the limited edition covers. So most of you I could not help but a few of you I did. Some received the standard cover and will now receive the second part of the order with your special edition cover.

Communication:
I've communicated to a portion of you that I am receiving 1,200 to 1,500 spam messages a day now. So my tech assistants are trying to help me with filters so I can receive legitimate communications. In the interim I'm doing my best to respond but there is going to be a change by tomorrow.

The fulfillment center will have an online location for you to track. Most of you will not need this at all since the books are shipping now.

I will be in Europe and somewhat out of the communication loop for about ten days. In preparation for that I've been behind here but please know that I'm not ignoring you but individual communication is becoming untenable.

Next step:
You should receive a tracking / shipping update which I believe will be coming form yahoo merchant or a paypal type notification. I'd expect this Thursday or Friday.

At that point all individual orders will be shipped. This is not to suggest that there will not be a few mistakes. I'm expecting them. But we will take care of you if you are a recipient of an error.

As mentioned previously there are a few batch or group orders going overseas that require special handling which we will be taking care of manually. But there's only two such orders that I am aware of.

Finally all of this process is coming to a close. You will have your books and be able to register them for free at enhancedbooks.com. I sincerely give you my apologies. Without excuse I'd like to say we've created a unique property and one I think is very special. It would be easy to point and say we were naive and I'd smile and say you were right. But the train has left the station and things will move fast now.

Several thousand books are being shipped to new distributers and the total manufactured quantity of 100,000 units is leaving home and flying or sailing all over the world.

So thank you. As I've said I'm very sorry for any inconvenience and I hope you love this hybrid book.

Sincerely,

Steven J. Slomkowski

I'm not gonna tell anyone to buy the book if they don't feel sure about it...

But after a large order I made, the publisher keeps emailing me about the process.

And I'm not talking about emails that get sent to everyone. Personal emails which update me on the situation without me asking for updates.

If it was a scam I believe he would have disappeared from the face of the earth with all the money they got from the pre-orders...

AGAIN, I'm not telling anyone "TRUST THEM", but from my personal experience so far, it seems that shit happened on the way, but we'll get our books soon.

Just give them a little time... Probably a few days...

I don't see anything wrong. Sometimes people try to do stuff but things get in the way and we can't always do what we want (like GN'R when it comes to releasing Chinese Democracy). The publisher even admitted they were not organized enough for such a big release and were overwhelmed. They need time, but I'm confident everything will be cleared by Nov. 1.

It really sucks that only a hand full of peoples are getting updates from the publisher while the rest of us have to wait for them to post our updates here and those posted updates said our orders have been shipped already only to have subsequent posts say they have NOT been shipped.

(and if youze notice, those updates that are posted come ONLY AFTER someone posts wondering about the legitimacy of this)

And for those of youze who are comparing this to CD...
Axl hasn't asked for or taken one red cent from any of us for it because it's NOT available yet!!!

I don't know if it sucks or not.

All I know is that I'm getting updates without asking for any or complaining about it.

That tells me that the publisher is legit.

Ofcourse that's my personal opinion... I hope it becomes everyone's opinion shortly though...

There is something 'strange'  going on.

The production leadtime to produce for example: 30,000 copies of the book from complete PDF artwork would take no more than 10 working days to complete.

I suspect that the delay is a finance issue whereby the printers would want money 'up front' to print. The publisher is now chasing enough orders to fulfil the order.

Just speculation, but that's how it works. I see problems like this every day of the week.

Sounds cool.? Sorry if this has already been posted.? (ps.? great matzoh ball soup at Canter's deli!)

Thanks more pictures, I can't wait to see them. I like seeing there old photos.

Neither did I. We just have to be patient. We've been waiting years (decades? ;D) for Chinese Democracy, so a few weeks/ months isn't that bad after all. ;)

We have been waiting ages for it alright, so we should be able to wait a few weeks for a book we know is on its way.

When I was looking at the stuff on the site, it said you could only look at the samples until you confirm you own the book. So I clicked it and there was a few fields to fill in so maybe that might be it.

So Cotis was it worth the wait ?

I use the only shipping option that it allowed me to use without the "that shipping is not available in your area" message coming up. I think this is a warm up for how the board will react to CD being released.

Yeah, I'm in the US.  On the eastern seaboard.  I believe it was shipped out of Texas on Oct. 8th, so it took 3 days to get here standard mail.

Hmmm, right so three days standard mail plus shipping to Europe means I shouldn't expect it friday if I'm honest but atleast I know it's on its way. But Ireland is the first stop in Europe from the east coast of America so maybe...just maybe.

here is some help for the online part of the book. go to enhancedbooks.com click on the log in on the top right hand part of the page, fill out the info and put in the code thats in your book. then after you submit it then log in again and this time stay on the right side of the page and just put in your ussername and password only and click login. Thats it then you can see the whole book. The site is still under construction so the extra photos are not up yet and only 1/3 of the pages have been enanced so far.

Okay, I've been reading the book from my bed for an hour or so.  Good stuff.  But I just checked out one page online and an audio snippet played (Tidas Sloan rehearsing).  So I guess the moral of this story is to read the book from the comforts of your computer chair if you can.

If you register your book on the www.enhancedbooks.com website, and view the book online.  MOST of the pages have audio and/or video samples on them.  Just move your cursor toward the upper left of the screen over the thing that looks like a microphone or the thing that looks like a video camera.  They're just samples, not full songs, but very cool nonetheless.

The history of this time period is written in more detail then I've ever read in the past.  With that said I've only read magazines and websites and no other books before.  However, since Marc Canter is one of Slash's best friends and he was around the whole time, we get great insight.  Plus, Slash, Duff and Steven all comment throughout in addition to many former bandmates and employees.  My only complain is the editing and there are far too many typos and I'm only up to page 52.  I'm going to check out the online stuff now.  Definitely going booze it up and crank GN'R on this fine Friday night!

Yes, there are typos, the book went to the printer without going to a proofreader and without Marc Canter looking at it. Time ran out and the deadline came, so the first printing will be extra rare because of that.

I am making a new thread as I don't want this buried on page sixteen of the current thread. Everyone has to get this book. When you buy the book, you get access to all this cool shit online at enhanced books website. Some people on the board had problems, but I got to work just fine. I just heard Audio of the first time Welcome To The Jungle was played live In 198Fuckin5, unreal shit and stories in thise book and online, I need to figure out how to rip the audio so I can Make a cd. See Ya, Mike

That's weird that it seems to have arrived in Germany and Austria before Ireland and the UK(The UK postal strikes aside) I can't relex either since I know people in Europe have recieved the book. Hopefully in the next few days we will get it and realise what eveybody else has realised already.

Yeah I haven't gotten that far yet, I'm still in 1986.  Damn spoilers, just kidding.  I've tried to refrain from talking too much about the book because I know people still have not received theirs, but it's a fantastic book.  I can't say enough good things about it.

Living in Australia I expected that I would be one of the last people to receive the pre-orders given that it probably has to get down here via a combination of a camel and a row boat.  But I still would have thought that I would get it before any regular orders.

It sounds like a really cool book and I am sure I will be really happy with it when it arrives, but from a marketing/business perspective it's pretty amateurish so far!  From the sounds of things Marc Canter has a wealth of complete video and audio from lots of old concerts which my guess is, he will try and market and sell at some point in the future.  With that in minde he hasn't done himself any favours on the shipping / pre-ordering side of things so far with this release.

A good business principle (that probably applies really well to the GN'R world) - "Under Promise and Over Deliver" - don't do the reverse!

Title: Re: New GNR picture book (Reckless Road)
Post by: Chief on October 18, 2007, 01:37:15 AM
i totally agree about the business aspects, etc.

I think that next time they should get a lot more manpower/resources if they are going to release something big like this.

As much as I am loving this book.. I also think that they should have had an editor look it over before printing, and it would have been fine with me if they said that it was delayed for few weeks because of that.

here is some help for the online part of the book. go to enhancedbooks.com click on the log in on the top right hand part of the page, fill out the info and put in the code thats in the first page of your book. then after you submit it then log in again and this time stay on the right side of the page and just put in your ussername and password only and click login. Thats it then you can see the whole book. The site is still under construction so the extra photos are not up yet and only 1/3 of the pages have been enanced so far.

But a lot of europeans have already recieved their books.  Why do two people in the UK (debatably one of the bigger european nations) have to wait so long, after pre-order, when some people have already recieved theirs after ordering just last week.  It's very poor service, no matter how good or bad the book will turn out to be (and i'm sure it'll be fantastic).

I might have used that but cant be sure and sure that website of theirs only let me use one type so what choice did I have ?
And The poster who is from the UK and myself from Ireland are still waiting yet posters from Austria and France have received their books already. Anybody got an answer for that ? And I don't see the point of getting an e-mail saying it has shipped when youd be better off not knowing.

I received my copy of the book today, Norway. (They tried to deliver it on the 16th, but I wasn't home. D'oh!)

Btw, I pre-ordered the book the last week of July..

Ya I tried that but it said serial number couldn't be found, but it is that code and there arent any numbers in it. Do i include the dashes between the letters ?
Anyway the book is brilliant, havent looked ahead at all bar the stuff you could view on the website before.

I don't think you add the dashes, but maybe try that.  Also, maybe an O is a ZERO or vice versa.  My code definitely had a couple #'s in it, but I don't know if they all did.

This might not be even needed and jarmo and the Mods can delete this if it doesn't fit or move it to where it does if it does. But for the people who have got the book and read it already, what are peoples favourite stories or pictures or the most suprising thing you read in the book. This might be dead in the water but I got the book today and have read it already and I found it great so was wondering what other people liked about the book.

Maybe not my favorite part, but I never knew that Slash auditioned for Poison before he turned them down and they went with C.C. DeVille.  Oh how the rock and roll world would've changed.  Scary thought.

One question about the book though. Adriana Dunken(sp) and Adriana Smith, they are both said in the book to be the girl in Rocket Queen. So it is the same person with a married and maiden surname or is it a mistake ?? ?

Marc mentions some demos the band did with Manny Charlton of Nazareth, including one song I've never read or heard about: The Plague...
And that it's Cornshucker Stomp, not just Cornshucker... But no further spoiling...

PS: Ok one then: Marc told me this about the song Goodnight Tonight (played at the Jan. 18, 1986 show):

I always thought it was a duff song because he sang most of the words.

I have a feeling it was an Izzy song, he played it in some of his shows on tour anyway.  But it does have a kind of punk sound to it, so maybe duff was heavily involved too.

I'm on page 250 now. I gotta say this is one hell of a book.
Really nice pictures and fun reading. Marc Canter has done a great job here. Probably the best Gnr book I've seen actually....

I'm seriously hoping we'll see more audio and video in the future of these old shows.
Can they be realeased without having to deal with legal issues etc? Dvd, cd? Anyone know?

But hey, Marc, if you read this, and there cant or wont be released anything officially- dont be afraid to pm me for some quality trades  ;D

The extras are awesome but a HUGE tease.  Nothing like hearing the first 45 seconds of Paradise City the first time they played it live and then having it fade out... 20 second snippets of LA Guns with Axl... it is all a huge tease.  Don't get me wrong... I LOVE the book... finished it in 3 days but the extras leave me wanting A LOT more.  When is Marc Canter going to come on here and let us all download what he has?  lol

So if the pre-orders have finally made their way down to me in Australia you would presume that everbody else who pre-ordered should have got theirs by now regardless of where they live.  So perhaps something stuffed up with your order.

Awesome book too by the way, well worth the wait!!!

i agree, the spelling errors kinda piss me off, it takes away from the overall product. Things like putting 'here' instead of 'hear.' Its the kinda thing you learn in elementary school.

Besides that it's awesome.

The problem was they sent the book to press without any proof reader or Marc Canter looking at the book after the design was done. So the first printing will be rare because of it.

I sent this message (customer service, link) to the EnhancedBooks on 09th November:

"I ordered a "Reckless Road" book on 02nd October, and the order number is: xxxxx
The book was shipped in 09th October 2007. I know it because I saw the link to the order's status putted in the message of the order's confirmation.
So, I know it only by this way, because I didn't receive the e-mail of the shipped confirmation.
Well, a guy that made the order on 06th October and live in Brazil too, received the book on 01st November and me don't receive the book yet.
The time of the shipping in FAQ (2-4 weeks [14-28 days]) expired on 06th November, and now we are in the 31th day after shipping.
Please, I need a answer.
Thank You for your attention and sorry my bad English.
Best regards from Brazil."

I'm still waiting for an answer and for my book. Updating: 34 days after shipping.

How many Slash covers were printed? I remember it being posted somewhere, but I can't find it.

After listening and watching to the extra audio and video content (will more be added?) , I can definitely say this book was worth every penny, and more. Damn, I wish there was a sequel.

There were 1000 Axl covers 750 Slash covers 600 izzy covers 400 duff covers and 200 steven covers printed. As far as the video extra's, We are in the prosses of geting that to the band to look at. Soon there will be some more great stuff up.
Could you let us know when that great stuff goes up?  I just finished viewing all the online stuff yesterday.  Can't wait for more.

Thanks a lot... cool stuff there. Nice rarities indeed....

Is it possible to view/find the pages with audio and video, or do I have to see through all of the pages...?

If you got a email saying that your book has shipped then you will get the book. I was thinking about the people who paid and? didn't get the email.

I got only the e-mail of order's confirmation. I didn't get the e-mail confirmation about the shipping, but, in the link of the status of my order I can see that the book was shipped. I ordered it on 02nd October and saw this status on 09th October.

Why I didn't get the email about shipped confirmation? The book was really shipped?

A guy in Brazil that ordered the book on 06th October received it on 01st November, and me... nothing!

I used paypal and paid for the book on 22nd October in my credit card bill.

Please, what can I, EnhancedBooks.com and RecklessRoad.com do?

Thank You for your attention,

Aline.

i havent had the chance to go through the interactive content yet, but all credit to Marc Canter for putting together this piece, it is by far the nicest GNR book out on the market currently, completely objective, free of opinions, full of info a fan would want, and it is well written.

good work. : ok:

Here is some help for the online part of the book. go to enhancedbooks.com click on the log in on the top right hand part of the page, fill out the info and put in the code thats in the first page of your book. Then after you submit it then log in again and this time stay on the left side of the page and just put in your ussername and password only and click login. Thats it then you can see the whole book. The site is still under construction so the extra photos are not up yet and only 1/2 of the pages have been enanced so far.

I asked to Marc Canter if I could make an interview with him for my Brazilian board www.perfectcrimegnr.com . Although he could not do it, he was nice enough and kindly sent me the full interview he did for Rolling Stone Turkey. I asked if I could post it and he said it was ok, but I (or any mods) would remove it if necessary.

So, here's the interview:

* The guys call you the sixth member of the band, exactly when and
where did you meet them, do you remember that exact moment? Did you
meet one of them at first, or were they all together?

I met slash in 1976 in the fifth grade. We were both at Kentucky Fried Chicken and he
went to my grammar school. He was thinking of taking my Motorbike,
until he recognized me from school. In 1984, i met the rest of them. By
1985, we were all good friends.

* Can you tell your first memory with GN?R?

My first memory with GNR was the first time Axl, Izzy, Steven and Slash first rehearsed together in
May of 1984. They played anything goes and Axl had really blew me away.
I had been following Slash through garage bands and never have i seen
someone sing like that before. The energy in the room was tremendous.

* Were they kind of an introverted band or were they really open (at
those early days)? How did you gain their trust? (Because you know,
they say that you had limited access to the band.)

I always had unlimited access because they were my friends and i was
helping them.

* Which member of GN?R was close to you mostly and why ?at that time-?

Slash was because i knew him longer but later i became really close
with Axl as well.

* And their relationship with each other at that time, how did it look
like?

GNR was five guys that knew that they were the best at what they do so
they had each others back.

* Did you think that they were going to become this huge group
worldwide, even at the beginning, did you believe in their potential?
What do you think was special about them, like what made them different
from the others?

I did think they would make it if they stayed together because they
were the perfect mix of talent at the time. I just didn't know they
would be as big as they got. They're look, they're sound, they're image
and they're style was the trend that was set by them.

* How did the scene look like at that time around 1985, L.A and the
Sunset Strip?

The scene was dead at the time, they started their own scene.

* And how did people react to GN?R at that time?

GNR had a strong following, the band had great song writing and tons of
energy. Each show brought more and more people.

* How did you decide to prepare a book like this?

I started this book in 1993 and had my first manuscript a year later.
Then i had Axl look at it in which he added some great information that
he remembered from the shows himself. I laid out photos and text to art
boards and had 380 pages. i got an agent that didn't know how to market
the book and was asking too much money up front for it from publishers.
i then switched to different agents but i still had the same problems.
I was told that when the band put out a new record, i would get a book
deal. A few years went by and i decided to put the book out myself. So
i cut it down to 280 pages to help with the cost of printing, but for
some reason i never did it. The book ended up sitting in my closet
until last year when i met Steven Slomkowski and Jason Porath from
Shoothip Press. When i saw what they were doing with enhanced books,
and the way that they can bridge the audio and video online with the
book, i knew that now was the time, and these were the guys that were
going to do it right. Also, the new GNR record was set to come out in
March of 2007 so the time was all good.

* Can you tell a little bit about the people who are involved in your
book, other than the GN?R members?

My plan was to have all the guys look at the book and make comments
about anything they remember from the shows. Jason Porath, my co-author
wanted to interview the band members for additional story. I started
thinking that anyone that was there should have their say such as the
roadies, strippers, record company people, producers, girlfriends and
old band members from the bands before GNR. Jason took their stories
and weaved them into the book in subjects that come up throughout the
book.

* Were you still close to GN?R after the ?80s, like at the Use Your
Illusion 1- 2 period, too?

I lost touch with Izzy and Steven but stayed very close to Axl, Slash
and Duff.

* If so, when did you first realize that they were falling apart?

When Izzy left, i knew that there was going to be some problems in the
song writing. Izzy was sort of the backbone to a lot of the songs. Izzy
was a great song starter and then the rest of the band would add to it
and change it around. When it was time to write songs in 1994, Slash
gave Axl 12 songs to work with and Axl only wanted to use 3 or 4 of
them. Slash replied by saying "oh yeah" and then used them in his
Snakepit record. Axl wanted to move on with something different. Slash
wanted to stay with his funky hard rock riffs in which the songs
sounded similar to Appetite for Destruction songs. The other problem
was that Axl wanted to add more to the mix by possibly having 2 lead
guitar players. With Slash, there was only room for 1. I think they
were both wrong, Slash should have let Axl work on the four songs, Duff
had some songs, and Axl even had some material. They should have asked
Izzy for some help as well.

* How do you feel about the new directions they followed after the
break-up, like Velvet Revolver, and Axl himself?

Sometimes things aren't meant to be. Now Axl has about 50 songs with
the new guys and have been touring all around the world. Velvet
Revolver now has 2 records out and are touring so they are all doing
well.

* There are some handwritten lyrics in the book, did you have them with
you all this time? Can you tell about them a little bit?

The handwritten lyrics came from 2 different songs; one is Slash's from
1983 and the other was lyrics that Axl gave to Michelle Young, the girl
that My Michelle was written about.

* What is the craziest thing you witnessed around GN?R at that time
(1985 vs) ?

The craziest thing i witnessed was probably a fight at a club called
Rajis on May 13th, 1986, it was the night they performed You're Crazy
for the first time. While GNR was on stage, a girl sprayed a beer on
Axl and he was getting shocked from the electrical equipment. Axl used
his mic stand to push her away. After the show, the girl's boyfriend
started swinging drum stands at Axl's head. Axl charged knocking him
down and kicking him in the ribs with his boots for about 30 seconds.
Then friends of both parties parted them. Someone could have easily
died that night.

* Do you think are there any new bands around, which have the kind of
attitude that GN?R had when they were formed?

No, GNR were the last band that you could identify all the members.
There was the Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, Aerosmith, and then GNR. GNR
was sort of the last of the image bands. Also, GNR was making music for
themselves, not for radio play.
.
* Do you still see each other? How did your relationship with the band
evolve in years?

I am still close to Slash, Axl and Duff, and because of this book, I
now see Steven again. I have only talked to Izzy a few times since the
old days but it is always nice to see him. Slash has been one of my
best friends since 1976. i have always been close with Axl since i met
him. He has always called me for some advice or an opinion for
something he's working on. He flew my wife and I to Rio in 2001 to see
GNR play the Rock in Rio. He sometimes stops by my house to take me to
the studio to hear a new song that was recently recorded.

* Aything that you want to tell or add?

I'm really happy with how the book looks. Shoothip press did a great
job taking my layout and taking it to life. This is the first true
enhanced book and this is a special time for me right now. This book is
going to change the way books are published in the future.

Thanks Marc Canter. Please, visit www.recklessroad.com for more info about the book. :)

Cheers

The book is great, the only complaints i have is the size, it looks smaller than slash's bio...can't see right now as i lent that book to a friend allready.  Also I was hoping for more backstage and off stage photos.  Other than that, Marc Canter did a good job on this and i'm glad slash had someone in his life like Marc.   looking forward to checking out the enhanced parts eventually.

This project is about a book that covers the first 50 gigs. The on-line extras are something special that puts a cherry on top of this project. It gives you a taste of what the shows sounded like. As far as the whole shows that would have to be a different project and something that the band would want to do. There will be some more interviews that go up at some point and more photos and the map will soon be interactive.

I'm assuming you can own the copyrights to photos you take, and can publish them, but you can't "release" GN'R's music just like that.

I think there's a reason why bootlegs are manufactured by these shady companies in certain countries.....

Sure, but Axl has given the thumbs up to all these pictures, aside from two.  I guess since he (Marc) recorded them with the bands blessing, as long as the band are ok with it, he can release them?  They aren't property of the record company or anything, surely?  Especially those filmed before they were signed.  It just seems a shame to be sitting on these recordings, and here we have a medium that is perfect for releasing them, and people who want them.

I guess really, i just find it frustrating knowing that out there is somewhere is the recording of Nightrain, as it was first played, and I can only hear the first few seconds!

Last night I was watching an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm, the one where Larry sets up a blind friend on a "blind date".  Anyhow he asks the other partner in the "blind date" if she wants to get some lunch and if she likes delicatessen.  Then they flash to a shot of the Canter's Restaraunt sign, where of course the band used to hang out back in the early days.  Thought that was kind of cool.

Correct, the Hell Revisited flyer pictured in the book was courtest of Axl. And Axl only took two pictures outta the book that he didn't want in there.

Axl looked at the photos in the first layout of the book a while back. It was only 1 photo that Axl asked "does this have to be here" And it was  because he didn't think the person who was in the photo  had anything much to do with GNR. Its not that he didn't like the photo. He just felt that maybe it didn't belong there. At the time Axl looked at the book he remembered a few things about the shows and that info was added to the book. He was not interviewed when the rest of the cast of characters did their interviews. As far as Izzy , He was all set to come look at the photos and make some comments until he found out that we were doing video interviews. Then we lost him. I did see Izzy like 2 months later at the Black Sabbath show and he asked if everything worked out ok with the book.

There's alot more to putting a book out than you think, I can see. Do you honestly believe that an author just prints books at his house or something and then ships them out as he feels? You realize there are publishers, printers, distributors, etc? right? and all these parties all have to be on the exact same page for things to go forward (it should be easy to understand on a board revolving around gnr) If it was as easy as "just ship the books out", everyone would have their books already. Sp stop trying to be a smartass and  fuckin deal with it.

Title: Re: New GNR picture book (Reckless Road)

I can deal with it when they start giving the ppl who still haven't received their PRE-ordered books updates by EMAIL of why they haven't shipped out yet (i've payed alot of money alot of months ago and still got nothing!)...or even better...reply to emails that where sent to ask about their orders!

Now i have to come to a board and read, i don't know how many, pages to sometimes find small pieces of info. But mostly i see replies of other ppl who've didn't PRE-order and got their order send out immediately.

anyone know the email to customer support for enhancedbooks? i cant find a contact us link at their website

The email I got from them about them confirming that my book had been sent had this as the reply email address:

no-reply-orders@enhancedbooks.com

I think that meant it was an electronically generated email to me that bascially wouldn't go to anybody if I replied to it with a question????  Although I'm not 100% sure so you could give that a crack.

Without wishing to 'rub it in' to those people who haven't received their copies, I have to say that owning all the previous photo books, none of them compare to Reckless Road. It is a fantastic informative book of the highest quality. Can't say enough good things about it...

I was lucky enough to have seen the 'appetite' line-up but having read the book would give anything to go back in time to 1986 to catch them at the roxy or another sunset club. I just hope that some 1st gen tape is out there for some of those shows.

Yeah, I ordered all 6, and after sneding an email about a week ago, received a repsonse saying all 6 shipped and it included a tracking number.  Granted, the tracking number indicates that they are shipping with the US Postal Service instead of what I paid for (UPS 2nd day shipping), but I can deal.  I hope that's good news for Nightfall and w.axl.rose.

The only thing that sucks is all the errors in the book.

like?

Various spelling & grammatical errors. I'd say they need a new proof-reader.
The problem was they sent the book to press without any proof reader or Marc Canter looking at the book after the design was done. So the first printing will be rare because of it.

@recklessroad:
will there be a 2nd printing without the errors?
if so....when can that be ordered and how can we be sure NOT to get another error-version from the remaining 1st printings?

well, Christos, i'd like to buy another error-free edition from this historical book from the AFD days kinda like the ultimate version or an upgrade. and since "recklessroad" himself was talking about a "first printing" and considering the delays and trouble we had with that one i only would like to have some more info about.

This may be the best book out there about GNR. It would be very cool if we had Reckless Road #2 and #3 that would cover the gigs and stuff from 87-93.

Or even better. An official release of the '86 demos.

LAist Interview: Marc Canter, Author and Best Friend of Guns n' Roses

LAist recently got the opportunity to sit down with Marc Canter, author of "Reckless Road; Guns n' Roses and the Making of Appetite for Destruction."

LAist: Did you know that you would eventually bring all of this material together?

Marc: I didn?t know that I would make a book, but I was collecting flyers and recording shows/ memorabilia just the way I would for Aerosmith. After they started to get big, (like gold record big) then I realized that at some point id put out a scrap book. So I started project in 1994 and ittook me 15 months to do. I worked on it from11am to 4 am, and I only went to sleep after I finished a particular section. I?d order a pizza at 3:30am, so I didn?t install a doorbell in my house so when it rings, it wont ring in my wife or kids rooms.

So at that point I re-developed all the photos and laid them all out. My goal was to give the publisher a perfect manuscript so they would say ?wow, there?s something here.? I wanted the photos the right color and everything; when you shoot on negatives, nothings the right color, its how you develop it.

LAist:What kind of camera were you shooting on?

Marc:My sisters camera, it was an A1?I didn?t know how to use it that well. If you asked me to do a photo shoot it would totally come out over or underexposed. I never really understood how photography worked.

So I put this thing together and shopped it around but my agent got very greedy, he wanted like a 1$00,000 advance, and this was right around the time the band was falling apart, (around the beginning of 95) and I said put it out for free. So I took it away from him, took it to William Morris, and they got greedy; they wouldn?t listen to me. So I just put it in my shelf, at the time it was 380 pages, and then about 3 years went by and I decided to self publish. I Financed the money by selling my magazine collection ? Hit Paraders, Creams, Circuses ? I had collected them from swap meets and flea markets, all the good ones from ?71 and ?72. I was really excited about them, but I wanted someone else to have them. So I eBay?d them and I knew they went to people who wanted them, so they was reassuring.

So the first thing I did was cut it down to 270 pgs and redeveloped a few picturess to black and white to save money. Then I bumped into some people by accident. This guy Jason calls me. Canter?s is in a book called ?America?s Great Deli?s, which is enhanced online. In it, there?s this interview with me and my brother, and this guy Jason called me to see if I wanted to put a link to Canters on the enhanced site. I said wow, because we don?t sell anything online for Canters so who cares? So I said when I ever get ready to publish this book ill be looking for you, because I have al this stuff that would make for a killer project. He said he had relatives in LA, so he would come down in 6 or 7 weeks and say hello. He came, saw, said ?Wow, I wasn?t a big GNR fan but I?ve seen what you?ve done and you?ve done something special!?

GNR still sells about 5,000 records a week so we knew that there are some people who would be interested in this. We would raise some money since Jason?s company was new, and he calls me back 6 weeks later, saying that they raised the money and they want to make a deal. So I told him how I wanted to run it, and we did it.

LAist: That?s awesome. So to change the subject a little, what was the scene like in LA at the time?

Marc: Punk was hot in 81, 82 and then it started to disappear. By the times ?84 came, punk was dead. Motley Crue may have been the only one left making rock, Stones weren?t doing anything, neither was Zeppelin or Aerosmith. And these guys were listening to all those bands, a 70?s with a bit of 60?s influence.

LAist: So did the guys consider GNR a metal band?

Marc: They considered themselves an Aersomith/ Zeppelin / Stones type of band just doing their version of that. Slash has these dimensions that he can see, like 12 bars into the future. The first time you hear the lead from Welcome to the Jungle or Paradise City, it?s the same as the record. How could that possibly be? He would hear the song and come up with a solo just like that. It would end up being on the record the exact same way as the first. His guitar sings. There?s something about the sound; some people thought it was a special amp. Twice he played here (at Canters) where he just came up and plugged in with the band. Within 15 seconds he?d warm up and you?d hear that it was Slash. But it wasn?t him that made the band. You needed everyone involved to make what it was. You know they were young 21-23, living on the streets, some of them angry, tough, so they had things to write about. Not only did they have talent, but they had the lyrics. Later, they weren?t writing about the hard times on the streets so you lost something just based on the fact that they have houses and aren?t writing in the same room.

LAist: Right, like in your book you mentioned the fact that they thrived off the ambiguity of life to make their music.

Marc:But now they?re doing it all separately and bringing it together to record; they can still make great music but its just not the same. Later it would be like someone would write a song and bring it to the band and each one would add their own part. It just wasn?t that same team of assassins as you had for Appetite. And that?s what made it so special, and that?s why I made it the focus on the book.

Also what made this interesting was that the guy that designed the book didn?t know a thing about GNR. The only reason he did it was that he had a background in design. He thought, let me give it a poke. So he laid out one or two of the shows. I said that ?you don?t have to be a fan but you have to understand what you?re doing.? I said you gotta listen to the songs and you gotta look at the pics, and he didn?t listen to me. So he became bored. He had to find what the average fan saw and say ?whoa look what you got!? So he had to make it better than it actually was. But he definitely knew how to make it great artistically. He was about ? through the book when he became curious, and started listening to the shows and fell in love. Then he wanted to redesign the book! So he watched one of the live shows from the Roxy and understood what this was all about. He would see Axl?s veins popping, every muscle in his body showing, he would see Slash lead in and just rips it out. You couldn?t get this from the pictures unless you knew what it looked like.

LAist: So were you into the partying scene with the band at all?

Marc: Not at all. Slash was always a drinker; there were a couple of them fooling around with stuff that they shouldn?t have. I mean once you fool around with them you?re married. They took a dark path down for a while. The funny thing was, whatever Axl experimented with, he was done with in 4 or 5 months. By June of 86, he was completely done. He just did it because everyone else was doing it. So it wasn?t like they were a bunch of drug addicts, but they did go out and have a good time.

LAist: I know that you were around all the time documenting the group, but how did the band deal with the real media?

Marc: They dealt with it. But for me, after they made it big, I still recorded their shows. Right around when they started touring with Metallica was when I stopped. I had what I wanted and the band had been captured. I just wanted to watch and enjoy the show.

LAist:Well being a young person born and raised in LA, its really great to be able to see what the scene was like.

Marc:It was totally an exciting thing because they started their own scene. Suddenly everyone started looking like they did. Everyone had that glam going on while they played rock and roll. There were always flyers all over the street. It just kind of took off. I mean at the time they had very little air play. But then MTV was ready to play Welcome to the Jungle one time at like 4 in the morning on a Sunday night, and the switchboard blew up. All the sudden Slash calls me and says that they?re in the top 10! Jungle stayed in the top 10 for months, then Sweet Child o? Mine came out, and they showed what they could do as a rock band as well as show their softer side, which went onto the radio and TV. That?s what set them a mile ahead of everyone else. We have another Zeppelin, we thought, not just some band that would make one album and then disappear.

LAist:Which is what some of the Geffen people were starting to see, at this point.

Marc: Yeah they were late though, I saw that they had what it took at the first Street Scene when they were opening up for Social Distortion. Nobody knew who they were, they came there with makeup and so forth, looking like the New York Dolls. People were spitting on them, throwing beer, but they maintained the stage. They only played 4 or 5 songs but they finally broke through. That was when I saw the power of the band. Every time I saw them play I would get butterflies in my stomach. However, every time I went to a show to take pictures, you lose a little something.

LAistL So you basically made a sacrifice for all the fans. We should be thanking you for it!

Marc At the time I didn?t see it that way because I couldn?t believe no one else was taping the shows. I just didn?t let it go. There was only one show that I missed. (Points to a map in the book) And this map will be online, where you can roll over the different spots and look at the history. The whole point is that I want this book to be relevant 100 years from now.

Title: Re: New GNR picture book (Reckless Road)
Post by: hartman on February 22, 2008, 09:34:25 AM
Great interview from metalsucks :

http://www.metalsucks.net/?p=4393

As heir to the legendary Canter?s Deli in LA, Marc Canter is practically Hollywood royalty; as a friend of the guitar legend the world knows as Slash, he also found himself in the unique position of being able to watch - and document - Guns N? Roses ascent from gutter punks on the Strip to the biggest band in the world.

Now Canter has released a book, Reckless Road: Guns N? Roses and the Making of Appetite for Destruction. Compiling countless interviews and never-before-seen photos, the book chronicles the band?s first fifty shows and their path to the creation of one of the most successful hard rock albums of all time - there?s even a component whereby you can listen to bootleg recordings of those shows and watch some video on the net by utilizing a code that comes with the book. It is, simply put, a must own for any GN?R fanatic (such as yours truly).

I recently had the chance to conduct an interview with Canter via e-mail. After the jump, read Marc?s thoughts on the creation of such a book, what GN?R were like in the old days, Chinese Democracy, Velvet Revovler, and more. Then head over to RecklessRoad.com to order the book.

You?ve obviously known the guys in GN?R for a long time. Why did you
decide to do the book now?

In 1993 I told Axl that I wanted to put out a Guns N? Roses book about the club days and he was like ?Yeah, that would be a great idea.? So I worked 5 hours a day for 15 months putting together the manuscript with all the photos laid out so that it would look real attractive to the publishers. When it was done the band was sort of breaking up and there was no record in site and my agent wanted too much money from the publishers. I just wanted to get this out to the fans to share with them what I was lucky enough to witness. So after a year and a half my agent sent me back the book and said ?If the band ever puts out a record, call me.? So it sat in my closet for years.

Two things happened in 2006. Axl played me Chinese Democracy in August and he told me it should be out by November and just by chance I found Jason Porath in September. He was working for enhanced books and he was calling me to see if Canter?s Deli wanted to place an ad on their site because Canter?s was in a book called American Great Delis that had been enhanced, meaning there are audio and video extras for the online part of the book. I asked Jason to tell me more about Enhanced Books and then I told him that I had put together a GN?R book and that I recorded all the shows and this would be a perfect project when I get ready to put out my book someday. A date was set for Chinese Democracy to come out for March 2007. Jason said he wanted to see what I had put together and that maybe he could help me get it out.

Six weeks later Jason was in town with Steven Slomkowski the guy who ended up doing the design for Reckless Road. They looked at my stuff and liked what they saw. I knew these were the right people to work with and now has to be the time to get this project rolling again. We put together a deal for the book to come out in the fall of 2007. I felt that would be a good time for the book to be out, 6 months after Axl puts out his new record.

There?s an incredible amount of rare, never before seen photos in your
book. Did you have to go around collecting those? Have you just been sitting on this huge stash of pics for so long?

I took photos at all the shows starting with Slash in 1982. I always tape recorded all the shows. When video recorders came out I started video taping and my friend Jack Lue took photos while I was doing video. I would keep everything that meant something from the gigs like the tickets and flyers and ads and clippings from the local papers. Sometimes a set list or some drawings that were laying around. Some of the videos made it out there as a bootleg. I did manage to keep the audio shows to myself.

There?s also a large multi-media component to the book that allows
readers to follow-along with audio and video to the shows being discussed. Can you discuss the thought process behind putting together such an all-encompassing experience?

After finding out what Enhanced Books was doing with books, I started working on fitting song segments to the page spreads to give the reader the [documentary filmmaker] Ken Burns effect. The online part to the book will blow you away. You can hear small parts from the shows the first time they played their songs live and what they said to crowd before they played a song live for the first time. You will feel like you were right there back in 1985. It?s going to change the way we read books.

This is a very special project and nothing like this has ever been done for any band. This is the birth of the band. The first 50 gigs that Guns N Roses did on the Sunset Strip have been well documented in this book. Also you can see and hear audio and video interviews form the cast of characters. There were like 24 people interviewed
for the book. My goal was to have all the band members look at the book and see what they might remember from the shows. Jason my co author wanted to interview the band to add more story to the project. Then I started thinking that everyone who was around and had something to do with the band should have something interesting to say. So I made a list of people that had ex-girlfriends, roadies, stripers, record company people, the producers and mixers that worked on the record, friends and old band members from all the bands before GN?R. Jason interviewed them and threaded their stories throughout the book where they would best fit.

GN?R have a reputation for being a band that was different from all the
glam bands on the Strip that were considered their contemporaries (e.g.,
Poison). But the book has lots of photos where the band actually looks
pretty glammed out. Can you discuss their evolution a little bit, from the
band in those photos to the band that got a reputation for being the
anti-Poison, so to speak?

They were experimenting with different looks for a while. Hanoi Rocks was a glam band that was one of Izzy and Axl?s influences. Guns N? Roses sound was rock
n? roll all the way and the image they gave off on stage was all raw power in the way they moved on stage. They may have put on some make up and shit but the real image that came from those shows was not glam.

Did you meet any resistance from any band members about releasing the book? Did anyone feel that their past was just ?too embarrassing? for print?

When Axl first saw my manuscript he was very impressed with the work I did,
and while looking at it he remembered some things about the shows that got incorporated into the next draft of the book. Even though Reckless Road documents the birth of as special as the birth of Guns N? Roses, which is very important to all the fans, Axl is now focusing on Chinese Democracy so this old stuff doesn?t mean that much to him right now. Slash said ?Reckless Road is the best rock-n-roll book I have ever seen. I am amazed that Marc turned these casual, candid photos into this book. I?m really impressed.? Duff and Steven also helped out for the book and thought it was great that I was doing this. When I called Izzy and told him what I was doing and he thought it was a cool project, but never made it over to look at it. I did see Izzy at a event a few months later and he asked me
?How did it all work out with the book??

Having been so close to the band right from the start, how do you feel
about they way evolved over the years into the Use Your Illusion albums? Do you have any thoughts about Velvet Revolver? Do you have any thoughts about Axl?s ?new?? Guns N? Roses?

The Use Your Illusion albums were a big change from Appetite For Destruction. The songs were put together a lot different. The guys no longer were living together and some of them had studios in their homes. Sometimes a song would be brought to the band already recorded and then lyrics would later be written. Also Slash was able to put some magic to songs that Axl came up this time like ?November Rain? and ?Estranged.? Now they had some money in their pockets and had a nice place to live,so the tension from living on the streets was gone. They were 5 years older. The songs for Appetite were put together in 1985. When Izzy left I knew there were going to be some problems in the way that the band was going to write songs. Izzy was a great song starter. I was disappointed when that lineup fell apart but now years later Axl has like 50 songs with the new band. I?ve heard Chinese Democracy and it?s great. Axl has toured around the world and always gives his best show live. Slash, Duff, and Matt put out 2 great records with Velvet Revolver and are touring the world. So there all doing well.

Any plans to do a sequel documenting the making of the Illusions albums?

No, the only person who would be able to do that would be Del James. He is also a friend of the band and still works with them now. He was the one documenting where I left off.

Finally, can you tell us your best GN?R story?

The whole experience was great for me. I do remember seeing their first show at the Troubadour on June 6, 1985 and knowing that I was witnessing something very special. I knew right there if they could stay together long enough that they would get signed and at least have a gold record.

September 28,1985 was also very special because they were opening up for Social Distortion and the whole show was running a few hours late. The punks were getting restless and the last thing they wanted to see was a bunch of guys on stage wearing make up and playing Stones songs. Guns N? Roses were able to maintain the stage while being spit on and won over the crowd and handled the stage like a stadium band.

Also seeing 10 of the 12 songs from Appetite for Destruction performed for the first time at these gigs was great because most of them were album ready the first time they played them. So it was great to see them creating those special songs one after another.

Marc Canter is perhaps the only Guns N? Roses fan who had Axl Rose tickle the ivories to the tune of ?November Rain? while he and his bride walked down the aisle on their wedding day. And he?s perhaps the only fan who had Slash jam with his son at his bar mitzvah. He?s still schlepping to places like San Bernardino, as he did in 2006, family in tow, for KROQ?s Inland Invasion, where he successfully caught the mike that Axl threw to 65,000 other people. Canter can estimate how many copies Appetite for Destruction is still selling; tell you the first time Slash played a Les Paul; and even point out inaccuracies in Slash?s own recently published autobiography. And, yes, there is a new record out there; Axl personally plays it for him. Why? Because years after the classic lineup disintegrated, and years after people stopped asking about Chinese Democracy, Canter ? a 42-year-old father of two and owner of Canter?s Deli ? has been the sixth Guns N? Roses member ever since Slash tried to steal his motor bike in the fifth grade.

Robert John

Marc Canter sits in with the band.
Click here for more classic Guns N' Roses photos from Marc Canter's book.

In the restaurant?s Kibitz Room, where a poster of Guns N? Roses opening for Aerosmith on their Permanent Vacation tour hangs above the stage, Canter reminisces about those musician buddies he used to feed free pastrami sandwiches to before they went on to become, as he rightly puts it, the ?last of the poster bands.? And as I listen to Canter, it?s clear he wasn?t merely the one with the car and steady job. It?s as if he attended every band meeting and never stopped recording the minutes, all of which are seemingly included in Canter?s book, Reckless Road: Guns N? Roses and the Making of Appetite for Destruction, a gig-by-gig pictorial guide of Guns N? Roses? beginnings, from their first appearance as the Appetite incarnation at the Troubadour in 1985 to the day they became Geffen recording artists. The man behind the most popular local after-hours hangout writing about L.A.?s most legendary hard-rock band of the ?80s is as close to the source as if every Queens pizza-parlor owner wrote about the Ramones in the ?70s.

?I grew up with Slash, so I already knew his talents,? says Canter. ?I knew he?d make it somehow, even if he was giving guitar lessons.?

?When I went to that first rehearsal and saw them play ?Anything Goes,? I was blown away,? he remembers. ?All of a sudden, there?s Axl giving it everything, and his sound, his range, the melody. It was like, ?This is real music. This is Led Zeppelin.? It was songwriting, it was image, it was style of playing, it was the sound they had. I noticed that about every three weeks, a new song would come that didn?t need any more arranging. I never saw them write a song and throw it out. Everything they came up with was gold. It was perfect. I had butterflies in my stomach before each show.?

Canter actually started the project in the early ?90s, after having spent years photographing and videotaping Slash and Axl back in their pre-GNR groups. ?I was gonna capture it even if they didn?t go anywhere,? says Canter. ?I was taking these photos, recording these shows for myself, if nothing else.? He?s amassed a treasure-trove of memorabilia, as well: newspaper clippings, backstage passes, ticket stubs, club ads, and DIY fliers of the band opening for Johnny Thunders, Ted Nugent and Alice Cooper. (Hard to imagine Guns N? Roses ever played a benefit for Jerry?s Kids.) Canter even includes the lyrics to ?My Michelle? written on the back of a water-stained flier, and a $37,500 advance check from Geffen that has Slash''s name misspelled as ?Stash."

Some of Reckless? photographs were included in Rolling Stone?s 20th-anniversary-of-Appetite issue last summer, and indeed, they are eye-popping. A framed black-and-white picture of the group still hangs above the Canter?s booth where they took their first publicity shot, and the ones taken in the alley wound up on the back cover of their 1986 Live ?!*@ Like A Suicide EP. You?d have to look long and hard on YouTube to find Axl in a thong and chaps, or dancing with Hollywood strippers back when they used to be part of the show. And funny how groups like Poison were the mortal enemies of all serious hard-rock artists back in the day, yet there?s Guns in more early publicity shots dabbling in eye shadow and lipstick and eating spaghetti. Foreshadowing?

Canter includes some audio samples of the shows on the book?s Web site, Recklessroad.com. But he almost didn?t have to bother. If Guns N? Roses were L.A. to the bone, Reckless functions as a sort of before-they-were-stars map taking you through every Sunset Strip joint and beyond, sweat, smoke and all. Every one of the approximately 50 gigs is broken down by set list and the stage banter of beer-and-cigarette calls. You can practically hear Axl tell the Roxy one night, ?This is the ?Fuck the L.A. Weekly? show,? and the Whisky on another, ?I would like the L.A. Weekly, and the Music Connection, and BAM magazine, and the Reader to feel this one right between the legs.? And you can feel the spit too. ?The Street Scene has gotta be my favorite,? says Canter, referring to the 1985 free outdoor festival, or, as Slash called it, the ?loogie fest,? where the guys were met with a spitting reception from the punk fans of Social Distortion who followed them.

But Canter doesn?t walk down memory lane alone. Slash, Duff McKagan and Steven Adler, as well as groupies, failed producers, and former managers and bandmates, all contribute to the book. Steven talks about splitting a cheeseburger five ways; Duff recalls playing a UCLA frat party for beer and 30 bucks; and Slash remembers trading for smack a pair of leather pants his mom made. And by now, almost everything about the making of Appetite is part of rock & roll legend: ?Nightrain? was an ode to cheap wine, ?My Michelle? was about a junior high friend of Slash?s whose father worked in the porn industry, etc. But if you need to hear it straight from the stripper?s mouth, Adriana Smith-Durgan, then a teen dancer at the Seventh Veil and Adler?s girlfriend, opens up about her contribution to the album: having sex with Axl in the studio for the moaning effects on ?Rocket Queen.? Even funnier is Tom Zutaut, the A&R man who signed M?tley Cr?e to Elektra, recalling how the Geffen deal came through: After a record-company bidding war, Guns N? Roses originally wanted to go with Chrysalis, but only if its A&R woman agreed to walk naked down Sunset Boulevard. She obviously didn?t.

After being pressed into naming his favorite tracks, Canter, not surprisingly, admits, ?Oh, that?s a hard one. Every song means something else to me. ?Sweet Child? is my favorite because the lead gives me chills. ?Nightrain? is just a fun song, like you?re on a conveyor belt and you?re just going. ?Mr. Brownstone? ? Slash?s wah-wah pedal grabs me in a certain way. ?So Easy? ? that?s the epitome of Duff. Now you?re getting a piece of the punk part. That was my favorite song for them to open with.?

Canter was never on the band?s payroll, which is why he?s remained friends with all of them. ?Slash, I?ve been friends with since the fifth grade. If he ever plays a gig anywhere he knows I?m at, he always calls me the next day to get a report of how he sounded. Axl, I?ve always been close with. If he?s in my neighborhood, he?ll stop by my house unannounced. All of a sudden, the doorbell rings and it?s Axl. ?C?mon, let?s go.? And he?ll put me in his car and drive me to the studio. And he?ll say, ?What do you think of this?? And he?ll play a really cool song he just wrote. He knows I?ll give him an honest opinion.?

So a guy who rides around with Axl has to have the answers, right? Except after nearly 15 years and so little activity, the questions have gone from where and when to why even carry on as Guns N? Roses. ?Everyone?s heard the songs,? says Canter. ?He plays them live. They?re all over the Internet. I myself have heard the record ? and there is a record. And it?s excellent. I?m proud to hear it. Is it right that he?s calling it Gun N? Roses? What else is he gonna call it? The Axl Rose Project? Axl?s been writing with these people for the last decade, and recording and experimenting. Axl can do it. He?s not gonna just throw in the towel and say, ?Oh, well, Slash is gone.? He?s gonna make it work somehow. And he has. He?s created a new band out of it. As long as you still have Axl, you still have Guns N? Roses. The singer is really the most important part in a band sometimes. Axl feels that he is the voice of Guns N? Roses. If you were Axl, would you give up that name?

?At the worst, you?re seeing Beatlemania with Paul McCartney. And at the best, you?re seeing some of the old stuff and what Axl has to offer to the future.?

Canter?s even hopeful about a reunion. ?They?ll be eligible for the Hall of Fame five years from now,? he says. ?Maybe by then they?ll graduate kindergarten and talk to each other.?

What I was trying to say is Slash should  come clean and apologize to the press for some things he has said and done over the years. I have asked Slash to do that and to stop saying things to the press about axl. I think the reason Slash won't do that is because in his mind he won't look Cool. With Slash everything has to be so cool. So the fact that Slash won't do that I feel that its like being in kindergarten. I want Axl to be able to look at Reckless Road and enjoy it,but how can he when there are photos of Slash everywhere. It's like looking at you wedding album after a bad divorce and now your in a new marriage that your very happy with. I think if Slash would Apologize, there would be less tension.

why must he apologise to the press?
he's done nothing wrong to them.

he should apologise to Axl....

he should apologise to Axl....and wasn't that his objective anyway when he went to Axl's house last year?

Maybe Axl should apologize too ?
Both parties were to blame in their own ways...

he should apologise to Axl....

Maybe Axl should apologize too ?

yes, it goes both ways....they've both been nasty to each other...

gut i don't see that happening, as Marc says..."its not cool enough" for Slash.....and i think Axl has way more pride than to apologise to Slash for whatever he may have said....

besides....why should they apologise to each other in anycase?

there really is no spece for Slash in GNR anymore....that band is nowhere near what it used to be when he was there....so what would be the point of having slash there again?

What are you talking about ?  ::)
The only way Slash and Axl could work together again would be if a reunion tour happened or at the HOF induction.

The press should apologise to axl. and they would never.
I think he meant slash should apologise publicly. slash has fed the press.

It's a matter of integrity.
the tension is also among the fandom. because the older kids are poisoned against their dad, new mum and their new brothers and sisters.

That's not cool of the ex gunners.

slash has fed the press.

But so has Izzy, Duff, Matt and Steven...Gilby sometimes too....also Dave Navarro wasn't all that complimentary when he spoke about Axl....and the list goes on and on...

Slash has possibly caused the most damage to Axl as a person with his comments, because fans have listened to his every word with more enthusiasm than the others, i agree with you there....but he shouldn't be considered as the sole reason why Axl got lambasted in the press...

fuck, almost anyone who got in touch with him and didn't like it had something bad to say....

the press really doesn't need slash or any other current or former member to say shit about axl for them to lambaste him.....just look at the lack of material axl's put out since the original band broke up.......not judging any member of the band past or present but the bottom line is, the last original GnR album came out in 1991.....to the press, that speaks volumes itself

This is one of the few books I've yet to read sadly.

Is this just in paperback?

I might just order one from Marc directly from eBay. So he can sign it.

I contacted him through his username on ebay and asked him to sign the books I ordered for me.  It is a fantastic book, but it does have several embarrassing spelling/grammar mistakes.  Other than that though its a goldmine of pictures and stories of the AFD lineup and even earlier than that.

I've still yet to get a copy of this. It's the only Gn'R book I don't have.

This guy has gone in to hiding...

Maybe he made amends too? or his "movie" is full go so he needs to keep quiet for that?
