LOL! Did he really sing that? That sounds kinda silly...
I always thought it was 'I'm free of all the chains, we had together', referring to a breakdown in a relationship (Wether that of a female or the old GNR)

Like someone said before, I think it's changed over time....from 'ball and chain' to 'all the chains' all the chains being the latest one...
