Axl's birthday is coming (Feb 6th by the way).

What if everybody tweet #HappyBirthdayAxl together? Maybe we can make a TT.

What does the # before the Happy Birthday Axl mean? I am in for this and I already have a Twitter account. I'm just not very savvy with it, but I'm not too old to learn new tricks. haha!   ;D

So, on twitter (it's really easy and it takes 5 min):
- go to www.twitter.com
- register your account ;)
- follow @axlrose @gunsnroses @djashba @bumblefoot etc (twitter.com/axlrose for example);
- you're done. You can write 140 characters texts in every tweet.

"TT" is the "Trending Topics" on Twitter. It shows on the right column the most popular subjects. So, if many gnr fans type #HappyBirthdayAxl at the same time, this text will appear for everyone who has a twitter account.

I think to make it a trend, we better start a bit earlier than est hits the 6th.
Maybe like as early as Christmas Island time, UTC/GMT +14 hours which is 19hrs ahead of htgth time.

No, it's not like that. We won't spam him. The idea is to post only the hash tag (the one with # in the beginning) to our twitters and each one can write s message along with it but not putting "@axlrose". The # tag doesn't show up on Axl's twitter as mentions.  He'll only see it if eventually we really make it to the "trending topics" because like someone said here, it shows on everyone's twitter page around the world. If we make it to the trending topics, then everyone, including Axl, by clicking on the tag will see all of the posts related, therefore all of our messages.

IMO is a great way to show him our support and love!

We should start on 0:01AM California time, since I assume that's where he'll be for his birthday. That's UTC/GMT -8 hours or Pacific Standard Time (PST).

The tag should be #happybirthdayaxl, not "uncle" Axl. The point is, we want to let the world know we love Axl, so no need to input this "internal joke".

To the twitter newbies, everybody has to use the exact same tag if we want to make a trending topic, but the message before can be different.

Sorry if this is a silly question but how "exact" does it have to be?  Does case matter?

As far as I know, it doesn't have to be exact.  A trending topic just has to be a topic that's getting a lot of tweets, it doesn't need to contain exactly the same text at all.  If you want to search for the topic though, it's easier to find if you include the hashtag (#) and the same wording.  Plus, it's easier to copy and paste if it's the same.

Twitter will count your tweets if you just put Happy Birthday Axl!  or if you put #happybirthdayaxl, but sometimes they stop counting a trend if it's determined that people are spamming.  I'm not sure how they determine that.  This is from the Twitter 'Trending Topics' help page:

Besides observing and participating trends, it is also possible to abuse them, but of course, this is against the Twitter Rules. The following behaviors and others like them could cause your account to be filtered from search or even suspended:

Ah, thanks for the info.  So I guess it'll be more of a one and done type thing, unless you can get real creative and think of different ways to incorporate Axl's birthday into tweets.

I guess we'll need all GN'R forums pulling together on this one.

I think it's  OK if each person tweets the tag along with a birthday message three or four times in the day. As long as they're different messages and spaced in hours they won't count as spam.

It will be cool if everyone could use the same # tag because then when someone clicks the tag it'll redirect to all of the related tweets. Probably Axl is gonna click it and read it, so that's my point. We want him and the whole world to see all of our messages together.

By the way, I don't think this has been posted to the other forums, we all gotta do this tomorrow. Don't forget to post to your national GnR forums too!

It should be menioned in the other forums that we shouldn't spam twitter with the message. Post only once, or at least post tweets with different content each time (containing the same tag).

I am registered in three of the Brazilian forums, also I can ask people o Facebook, MySpace, Orkut, I'm registered in most of the internationals forums as well. I'll post where I don't see it posted until tomorrow (the 5th) night. For those who already made the threads in other forums, it's very important to put the note as Spirit said: to not tweet too much, but only three times, and all with different messages, or the whole thing will be just considered spam by twitter.

Here's a guide I made that you guys can use as a model to post to the other forums:




Here's how it works: when people talk too much about a subject on twitter, it becomes a trending topic, like a huge conversation everyone's having. Then the link to all related posts will show at everyone's twitter home. A lot of people watch the twitter's trending topics. Basically, it's considered what's being talked about on the internet currently.

The whole idea of this is to make #HappyBirthdayAxl (we call it a hash tag, it's like a forum's thread title) become a Trending Topic (or TT) on twitter. By trying to make Axl's birthday become a trending topic, we're trying to make our love and admiration for him extremely public. IMO it's a great way to show love and support with such a simple tool, that has an enormous reach worldwide.

So here is a guide:

1 - Go to http://twitter.com/

2 - Register an account.

3 - No need to follow anyone for this but if you want follow the band go to:

twitter.com/DizzyReed
twitter.com/richardfortus

Under the person's name there's a link to "follow", click that.

4 - Wait until it's close to midnight of the 5th in PST time (California time, UTC/GMT -8). We can start a few hours before midnight actually.

5 - On time to tweet, write down your message for Axl in the type box in the top and in the end of your message add: #HappyBirthdayAxl. There is no need to mention Axl (mention = when you type @nameoftheperson). A flood of tweets directed to Axl is unnecessary. We're trying to pay a public homage here, not private.

6 - Rules to make it work:

- Twitter has a system which detects spam and automatically ignores what it considers in this category, so don't spam.
- According to twitter's rules, messages that don't add value to the conversation are disconsidered. So try to "talk" to the people posting the same tag. It's like a forum, only with 140 character limit. When you click the tag (after you post the first one) you'll find all related posts to help you get into the conversation and know what to tweet. You can tweet more than once but each time you tweet type a different message, trying to follow the talk.
- Don't repeat too much and give a break in between tweets.
- Don't put the tag along with unrelated posts.
- Don't put it with no message along.

7 - Ask your friends to get into the conversation. Discuss Axl, GnR, the tour, as long as you put the #tag for Axl's birthday in the end of your posts.

8 - If you know a forum/community where this wasn't posted, please post and ask everyone to join.

I guess it counts both the amount of tweets and a 24h time frame. It's like the biggest buzz in the last 24hrs.

To whoever is tweeting, just a friendly request: Don't Spam.

Twitter may block your account for spamming, which is against their rules. And also spamming can invalidate our whole #HappyBirthdayAxl topic. Yes they verify it to see if it's a legit discussion before allowing it to show as "Trending Topic".

When you use the #HappyBirthdayAxl tag, don't post it alone, don't post it with one word only, or random words or letters, don't repeat the tag in the post. Don't post incessantly. All of this is called "spam" and is against twitter's rules.

Try to follow the topic. Click the #HappyBirthdayAxl tag in any post to read what's being talked by those of us who are celebrating. And if you see someone starting spam, warn them about this, and teach them how to see the topic so that we turn this into a real talk.

Please post this to the other forums.

No, apparently you need to say something along with it (not just one word or random characters) so that twitter doesn't see it as spam. Good example is what Jarmo did on the front page of htgth (http://www.heretodaygonetohell.com/index2.php).
