What was the reason Axl was so upset about being photographed or recorded on camera?
That lead him to stop shows.
Did not he like fans to record them without permission?
Or were these reporters Axl did not like?

The media has never been kind to Axl whether the tragedy at Donnington back in 88 and numerous outlets that always portrayed Axl in a negative light I think his mindset is it was a no win situation you stay quiet you get criticized for not saying anything or he does say something and things get twisted and once again portray him negatively.

I think you are right when it comes to interviews and statements.

I don't think Axl abhors being on camera.  He's certainly been enough videos and posed for enough pictures.  There's a difference though when you are ready to have your picture taken and when people are catching you unprepared to have your picture taken.  Who doesn't need to scratch their butt once in a while and various other unflattering facial expressions. 

And then you have the camera flash.  It can damage your eyes to have lots of flashes to it, not to mention obstruct your vision.  It's a health and safety issue for celebrities.  I watched Duff on stage.  His face was facing out to the crowd the whole time but his eyes were down cast to the stage.  He's really good at it but that I assume was to keep the stage show lights from damaging his eyes.

I still laugh when they did those photo shoots of a cleaned up, sophisticated Axl.  He did them well but that's not the Axl that fronts GNR.  We want pictures of that guy.

I remember Axl said something like "I'm not in the pictures anymore" like, he didn't recognize himself in the photos taken onstage.

maybe being exposed worldwide and having your face in every magazine or tv show distorded your own sense of yourself, vampirizing
your image.

I think I should have been more specific.
I mean, why did Axl react with such fury when he was photographed or recorded by some people?
Especially during the 1991 St. Louis Riot.
Is this a control issue?

First, back then you were not supposed to be recording or taking photos. Times are a bit different now. Everyone basically carries a camera nowadays.

Two, no one did what he requested. He asked them to get the camera since it wasn't an approved photographer taking the photos.
