Title: Queen on American Idol - What if GNR?
Post by: GeorgeSteele on April 12, 2006, 08:37:13 AM
First sign of the apocalypse:  Queen's songs were featured on American Idol last night and Brian May was involved in coaching the contestants.  My friend is a huge Queen fan and he is now on 24/7 suicide watch.  And Freddie Mercury just died again.

What if it were GNR?  Can you imagine these little idiots trying to sing Mr. Brownstone with Adler preparing them?  I would light myself on fire.

I beg you, please don't say that since Brian May played on CITR that means GNR was technically on the show.

Okay, that made me laugh  Thank you, I needed that  :peace:

Thanks, chief.

I guess I just take this thing personally because it destroys the legacies of bands that meant so much to us at a time in our lives. ?Another example is The Who. ?They sold the song Bargain for a Nissan commercial. ?That song was about giving up all material possessions in exchange for inner spiritual peace. ?So they sell the song for a commercial? ?Very disillusioning.

Makes Axl's lawsuit with Slash and Duff all the more important. ?Seems like Slash and Duff are ready to license the old songs for anything.

You think John Lennon wrote Revolution about a pair of Nike shoes?
Or Led Zeppelin wrote Rock N' Roll about Chev or Ford cars, whatever it was?
How about my own personal favorite, Pictures Of You by The Cure about Kodak Cameras?

It's so disappointing when companies buy out the writes to songs. Hopefully if Axl does keep the rights to the GNR songs, we'll never see them being used to support some lame products.
Although, Welcome To The Jungle was the theme song for Grand Theft Auto. So maybe they're already on the way to more commercials.

Don't Cry in a tearless shampoo commercial? It could work

Well I'm sure it helped that Axl was ACTUALLY in the game!  I don't think the WTTJ was a sell out for grand theft auto....it fit the game pretty well.  I think its only lame to sell songs for endorsements when the band or song itself is against corporate culture and selling out to begin with (revolution is a great example).

Yes, Freddie was a showman and he loved attention - but he would get it on his terms and in his own unique way.? What "appearances" are you referring to that are even remotely comparable to American Idol in terms of shamelessness?

? ? ? i think you guys may find that freddie would have never sold himself to these pop wannabes.he may have been an attention seeker (so you say) but he was classy at the same time.

You have heard it? I think is normal not Freddie at his best not even Michael Jackson but I think is also not comparable to thos american idols guys. I know what you are saying GeorgeSteele but i wasn't talking about that, of course nobody could sing and performed like freddie there can be only one   ;)

Of course he was classy, but he seek attention in the pop areas in the way people can get to know him, you think he will seek attention in a show that nobody sees?

You know why Freddie died again?  Because Paula Abdul stated that Innuendo hasn't been performed live by Queen because nobody can sing it and Simon Cowell said it's not a very good song.

He's the entertainment part of the show.  He's the guy you love to hate.  He gets paid big money to throw in his stupid, smartass comments.  Don't take anything he says seriously.

Damn, my girl watches that show so damn much she actually has me debating over it. :crying:

I don't think gnr is the same like queen....Even though queen is rock it has that friendly vibe to it.. Something AI looks for.. Unless they had some real kick ass rock day which I doubt will happen.. You have a better chance of some regular wanna be rocker like Bo Bice picking a gnr tune..

I saw someone mention freddie wouldn't have sold out or did this.. How do you know ,times have changed many bands and it's members are doing so many "uncool" things...  I hate the circle of that's not metal :hihi: I like a spreading of the music or different collaborations especially once the guys get older.. They have already proven they are rock

Dude, Axl let them use SCOM on the maybe the lamest movie ever, Big Daddy. ? ?Slash and Duff wanted to use a song on Black Hawk Down. ?Now tell me what's worse? ?::) ?And other than that I don't believe we have any other evidence of what Slash and Duff wanted to use music for. ?To say they would license it for anything simply isn't fair.

Anyways, to me it doesn't change the quality of the songs, or the enjoyment I get out of them. ?So it doesn't harm the legacies of any of these bands, IMO. ?If you think otherwise then you should probably think GN'R's legacy has already been hurt by Axl allowing SCOM on Big Daddy and the fact that he let Sheryl Crow butcher the song - even though I like her otherwise, but let's face it, her version of that song was horrible.

But whats the problem with all of this?, I think the guys can sell the things whoeever they want to right?, even if you think that program, comercail whatever suck, is still their possesion, or axl at least. But he can do with them whatever the hell he wants

For someone who's doing a lot of whining about how embarassing this is for Queen... you sure seem to know a lot about what goes on in American Idol.  ::)

Got me there... I can blame it on my wife for insisting on watching but the truth is its like a car wreck I can't avoid looking at.  I'm not a huge Queen fan, so I can deal with it.  My ultimate point is that if it ever came to this with GNR, I would throw up in my mouth.

Isn't Prince going to be on the show next week?? I think I heard that somewhere.

And even though it's weird to see a band like Queen on there, and I can understand where most of you are coming from, if you look at it from a business standpoint, their appearance on AI was very, very smart. I'm sure they've had a boost in sales today because of their appearance last nite. And with so many young people watching AI, many of them had probably never heard of Queen, but probably knew songs like "We Will Rock You" and "Bohemian Rhapsody;" so, by seeing them on the show and now knowing their name, they'll probably go out and buy a Queen record. It was a good way to introduce themselves to a younger generation.

Yes, if you look at it from a business standpoint.  I was looking at it from the "guy who spends way too much time on a GNR message board" standpoint.

Prince?  Another GNR connection!  Duff helped Adler become a better drummer with the help of Prince's music.

It's a very good thing. If I hadn't heard WTTJ on the GTA: SA commercial, I wouldn't be here right now. I wasn't born when WTTJ and AFD were releasd, and when I heard WTTJ during the GTA commercial, I was blown away. That song got me into GN'R and eventually hard rock and metal entirely. I never bought the game, but the commercial alone drastically changed my life. I don't know how I lived before GN'R.  : ok:

Yeah I caught that the other night and a friend asked that same question.  I hate the idea that GNR could be involved in that ridiculous show but I'd probably do my best to validate it.  It is a ratings blockbuster (somehow).  So it'd be good exposure.  That's what I would tell myself.
