The action is the term used to describe the distance between the strings and the neck of the guitar. Generally, the lower the action, the easier the guitar is to play, but a low action can also produce annoying fret buzz etc. which doesn't sound very good. It can be difficult to find a nice compromise to get a good sound, but also keeping the guitar in a playable state.

Some slide guitarists generally prefer guitars with high a high action, as this lessens the chance of them inadvertently scraping their slide along the neck of the guitar (that's the way I see it anyway!).
