Title: Death Cab For Cutie
Post by: Kujo on November 03, 2005, 10:22:56 AM
I already have a feeling this will wind up being a conversation between Ignatius and myself, but what the heck.........

Saw these guys at the Hard Rock Live in Orlando on Halloween night and was completely blown away. I had just gotten into them within the last few months and they have quickly become one of my favorite bands. There was alot of energy all night from the opener of "Marching Bands of Manhattan" through to the encores of "I Will Follow You Into the Dark" and "Prove My Hypotheses", upon which the opening act "Stars" (Another good band) came out and "killed" guitarist Chris Walla.

The show was heavy on material from there latest CD "Plans" which in my opinion has been the best release so far this year. All songs are strong beginning to end, with the stand out being "What Sarah Said", which might be one of the saddest songs to come along in awhile.

Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone else is into these guys.

You are the man Kujo?

Fucking A, I have like a million things to do at work today and here I am, posting about Death Cab...where are my priorities? (see Jarmo, you finally made it, HTGTH has become more important than my job!!)

Anyway, what can I say Kujo? This band is great. I started to like then about a year and a half ago. As a matter of fact, I think the first time I talk about them here was about a year ago. This is what i said back then http://www.heretodaygonetohell.com/board/index.php?topic=13030.0

I own Transatlanticism (did I spell that right?) and a few other songs from The Photo Album. Plans I still haven't heard, but after reading your review, it's definitely a must.

Off Transatlanticism I recommend The New Year, The Sound of Settling, Expo 86, Title and Registration..tha album is great. Kujo, download I was a Kaleidoscope off the Photo Album. Best song (one of the best, depends on the mood). Heavier than anything from Transatlanticism.

Haven't seen them live, but if they tour these shores, I'll definitely check them out. Good to know they are so great live!

Boys and girls, you should check out this band. One of the best that's come from America in the past 5 years!

I had all their CD's before the show and the "Sleep Carefully, Drive Well" DVD. At the concert I picked up their 3 E.P.'s. I'll post the set list as soon as I remember the names of a few songs.

I bought Plans.  I like it but I have a feeling that I will like it more a few months from now.  It needs to grow on me more.  Does their earlier stuff have the same basic sound as Plans?

Plans has a more relaxed feel and since it is their first release on a major label it is also a bit more "polished" sounding. There is definitely more of a guitar heavy feel to their previous releases. I would suggest in order of preference:

1. Transatlantacisim
2. The Photo Album
3. We Have The Facts And We Are Voting Yes
4. You Can Play These Songs With Chords

Plans is a great, great record - I'm looking foward to picking up Transatlanticism sometime soon. "Different Names for the Same Thing" is getting a ton of spins in my CD player... I love that tune.

Kujo has them all, so his advice should weight more than mine, but, I really like Transatlantacisim. I will be soon getting the entire collection and probably go to Madrid to see them live whenever they come this way.

If you liked The Postal Service, you'd definitely enjoy this.  : ok:

I'd say get Plans first because it is the most accessible, in my opinion. After that go in the order I listed above :peace:

Any Band that Seth Cohen (fictional character I know) is not a band of mine.

 ???

I think he meant, any band spoken of by, or listened to by Seth Cohen (Adam Brody) is more than likely a band Fionna will not care for

The SNL page has video from previous shows but no musical performances. I'm not sure about live streams. I'll look around the bands site and some fan sites to see if I can find anything, but I probably wont be on much the next few days.

Well I downloaded all the songs you recommended and loved pretty much all of them especially the Sound of Settling. I didnt know who this band was before clicking on this thread, but after that track and a few others I recognized them from the OC, their music has been featured in alot of episodes. Any other song recommendations along the lines of Sound of Settling? I like the mellow/ballad type songs too but I rather get to know the more upbeat side of this band first.

Sounds like a pretty good show. Probably pre-tape it because SNL is so not funny now.

Big fan of this band, good for calm motorway driving! I got Plans a while back and i agree its the best album i bought for a while at least. Is translantism worth the purchase? better or worse?

I cant really say if its better or not. I can say that its different since Plans is a mellow style, Transatlanticism is more guitar heavy. It still has great songs on it though.

Actually I would recommend going in order of the actual releases and witness the development of the band. If you dont want all their early stuff at least start with "The Photo Album" than "Transatlanticism"

Also see if you can find some "Postal Service" downloads. It has Ben Gibbards song writing style, with some different musical styles. I like the whole album "Give Up" but it might not be for everyones tastes.

I just got the Photo Album. I already had Transatlanticism and Plans.

Still a pretty good album.

This band is really good I feel. Not that that big yet. They could be the next U2 but I don't know. I guess anyone can say that. But I feel they've done some pretty good quality shit.

The New Year is probs my favorite song followed by Trans and then Marching Bands.

Saw them live in TO this April at the Ricoh Coliseum. So amazing. They blew Franz out of the water.

Personally, I think they suck.  But in Wizard Magazine issue 177, the band annonced that they were releasing a music video for every song on the "plans" album.  Two of the vidoes are dirceted by comic book artists, so thats why it was Wizard this month.

I dont mind if people don't like them as long as they actually listened to them first : ok:

The videos are all available on their website and on a recently released DVD called directions. A pretty good concept that maybe other bands will hopefully pick up on. The video for What Sarah Said takes an already depressing song and makes it even more frigging depressing. This is one of a few videos that could be released by the band as is.
