Axl Rose Breaks His Silence

Gn'R mastermind talks "Democracy" at L.A. party "People will hear music this year," says Axl Rose, puffing on a cigar in the early hours of Saturday morning at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery.
The notoriously reclusive rocker is of course referring to Guns n' Roses' decade-in-the-making Chinese Democracy, arguably the most anticipated album in rock & roll history. "It's a very complex record," says Rose, a surprise guest at Korn's tour announcement bash. (Others in the house: Jessica Alba, cast members of The OC, and members of Linkin Park, Good Charlotte and the Used.) "I'm trying to do something different. Some of the arrangements are kind of like Queen. Some people are going to say, 'It doesn't sound like Axl Rose, it doesn't sound like Guns n' Roses.'" He then smiles and adds, "But you'll like at least a few songs on there."

Dressed in a Toronto Maple Leafs jersey, cross hanging around his neck, cornrows still intact and sporting a blonde goatee, Rose strolled into the party around 1 a.m., just as the DJ was coincidentally rocking some vintage Gn'R. Approached by a steady stream of women and hard-rock disciples -- including Puddle of Mudd's Wes Scantlin and Papa Roach's Dave Buckner -- Rose is cordial and chatty as he poses for photo after photo. He seems more like an average guy out for a night with friends than the most mythical rock star on the planet in 2006.

And he maintains that that's exactly what he is. "The only time people ever write about me is when I go out to a strip club, because I don't chase the paparazzi down," he says. And, when he's out of the spotlight, Rose says you'll find him doing average-guy stuff: reading books and watching movies. His favorite book is Philip K. Dick's A Scanner Darkly. "I was a little scared when I saw they were making it into a movie starring Keanu [Reeves]," he says. "But I guess if he can handle The Matrix, he can do this."

While Rose and his revolving cast of Gn'R bandmates have been working on Chinese Democracy, Papa Roach have achieved platinum status in their own right. But tonight, their drummer reverts to his teenage fan days, asking Rose for a picture and to guest on Papa Roach's next album. Rose strikes a pose and then graciously refers the fellow rocker to his management.

After all, before he lends his talents to others' projects, Rose has one of his own to finish, and he says it's getting there. "We're working on thirty-two songs, and twenty-six are nearly done," he says. Of those, thirteen are slated for the final album. Among Rose's favorites are "Better," "There Was a Time" and "The Blues."

As for a reunion with his former Gn'R mates, that seems unlikely. "I haven't spoken to Slash in ten years," Rose says. "I love the guy, I always wanted everyone to know how great he was, but.... I was just talking to Izzy the other day though."

However, he hints that you could see the current incarnation of Gn'R back out on the road soon. "Every time there's a big festival announced, we get rumored to be on there," he says. "But we'll see what happens."

One thing's for sure: Everyone will be watching.

STEVE BALTIN

Wow, I hope to see GN'R at Rio. Although it I'm not sure that was a hint, perhaps the interviewer heard something in his tone.

Cool, we hadn't heard of the song title 'Better' before.

Very cool that he still speaks to Izzy and very complimentary comments on Slash.

Looks like two albums worth of material. He wouldn't finish tracks that were just demos and going to be scraped. I wonder what almost finished means, perhaps final mixing or mastering. Wonder if he will finish 27-32 before going on the road, perhaps ready for a 2nd album whilst out there.

Sounds promising indeed. I'm also glad he's on speaking terms with Izzy, even if it does't mean any musical collaboration.

Ummm, I hope Blues is not one of the best tracks but TWAT has always been rumored to be awesome.

Axl did a great job sidestepping Papa Roach's absurd request to appear on their next album. LOL. Yeah, like he would do that.

just to add, another article came up @ MTV.com.

The other members currently are all finished doing their solo stuff haven't they? Richard said he was going back to record so I wonder if those last few tracks are currently being done ready for action this summer.

Axl sounds like he is really comfortable and relaxed to take his time, not too bothered what anyone thinks about it. Axl Falcon said, very comfortable in his own skin.

"People will hear music this year"

Could mean a soundtrack or a RIR gig. People heard music in 2002...Still no word on CD, still, nice to hear from him.

What worries me is that the album isn't done yet: 6 more songs to finish plus selection and I assume mixing and mastering. this sounds like a late in the year release realisitically.

Axl turned Kid Rock down? News to me...Not a bad idea for Axl to record with a newer band. If it's a hit, younger music fans will be more interested in GN'R and CD.

Or a sound track song. If axl came out next week and said the album will be released on the first tuesday in Nov, I would be happy, as long as we get a date set in stone.

whats funny is..  i dreamt last night that i met Axl Rose and later i found out one of my friends interviewed him ... and i heard the interview and his voice sounded a little different. he had a big beard and a beanie on.... so i had a feeling something was gonna happen soon...

Holy focking sheot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ?Note the attitude toward Slash and Izzy. ?Though the author says it is unlikely of a reunion, I feel that the secret songs from 2002 that Izzy, Slash, and Duff wrote for Axl too sing may make their way to him for sure now! ?Izzy still talks to Slash. ?That is in the inside of inside sources and mutaul friends for Axl and Slash. ?Remember long ago when it was beleived that Slash on TWAT may be him and Axl's swan song? ? I think Slash will be on that recording, and it is a favorite of his. ?I think major developments are around the corner. ?I think he may have a new moxy about him now. ?Something has brought him back to really working again. ?Izzy may just be that guy. ?More like an advisor to him. ?Not to rejoin, but maybe to reinspire. ?This is fantastic news. ?I still don't think we will see CD this year though.

I was thinking the other day though when we got the photos that Axl mustve gone to this specific party for a reason, I mean I figure he must've been invited to tons of partys like this over the last 3 years but him going to this one makes it seem like he wants to get back into the public eye. Makes me think maybe he really does have plans to release the baby this year!

Him mentioning those song titles just makes me want this so bad! I hope he hasn't forgotten about Madagascar either, I love that song. I'm just glad it didnt say 'among Axl's favourites is 'Silkworms' ?:hihi:

Question is this, we he do one of the songs from the Slash, Duff, Izzy, and Matt sessions of 2002......

I say yes. ?He is referring to a few that we will like? ?It wouldn't surprise me that for his lawsuits to go better, maybe he has Slash and Izzy on a song or two to make up for lost earnings he owes them?????? ?Okay, that is a reach. ?Back to reality.

It's just refreshing to know that if Axl found Slash near death lying on the street... he wouldn't just step over him and keep walking... Forget reunions... I just think it would be a great thing if the original five could all be civil and respectful to each other in person and in the press before they leave the earth.

As far as CD goes... I'm more encouraged than ever. I think Axl is playing coy when he says "the people will hear music this year" sh1t... I honestly think it's going down in '06. If I lived in Europe.... I would be freeing up my schedule this summer... RIGHT NOW...

Also, very nice piece done by RS. They go out of their way to portray Axl as a legend in his own time... which he is. I have a feeling... despite all the bs that's existed between GN'R and RS through the years.... they want to be on-board with this comeback... which is HUGE.

The best marketing would to be have the original members do a song or two.  Its not anymore crazy to have them on a song or two as it is to have Buckethead on the whole album.  If I am Axl, I get atleast two original style GNR songs to go along with all the other songs that are his vision.

Yeah, I agree. Or the part where he says "I'm trying to do something different. Some of the arrangements are kind of like Queen. Some people are going to say, 'It doesn't sound like Axl Rose, it doesn't sound like Guns n' Roses.'"

I think he knows there will be a backlash from those wanting another PC, SCOM or YCMB. I think CD will be an arty album and he is letting people know that now.

I wonder if it's gonna be a double release like the Illusions, or he's gonna release it bit by bit. ?It would make more sense to do a double, cuz all the pieces to the puzzle will fit. ?And imagine, Axl, the only artist EVER to do a double release twice, wouldn't that be something.

"We're working on thirty-two songs, and twenty-six are nearly done," he says. Of those, thirteen are slated for the final album. Among Rose's favorites are "Better," "There Was a Time" and "The Blues."

My guess is he probably (hopefully) has his A-listed tracks down that will be on CD and the others might be for the next release---you heard it from the horses' mouth folks- we'll hear something this year! My God! :smoking:

One question: ?"Of those, thirteen are slated for the final album. " ?Does this mean the final album of the previously planned three? ?Or what? ?Anyone?

Yeah that would be cool cuz i just re-read the article, and only 13 will be on CD. ?what bothers me is that he said 26 songs were NEARLY done. ?I hope Axl has revised his lexicon.

This is great news but it doesn't mean that an album will be out anytime soon. ?I personally think it's awesome that we atleast heard from him, but don't expect an album in the next few months. ?When he says that we will "HEAR MUSIC THIS YEAR", that could mean anything. ?It could mean a song on a soundtrack, or GNR playing new music live. ?This doesn't suggest anything about Chinese Democracy, but it is good that we heard from him and he complimented Slash. ?

Now we know in what stage the album are, how many song will be on the record and if this year will be as "empty" as the 2004,2003,2002... ( I guess not, because of the "you will hear music this year" )

that?s all we ALWAYS wanted him to do.... was that hard King Rose?!

I'm trying to figure out the math here...32 songs, 26 nearly complete, and 13 will go on the final album. ?Why only 13? ? Does that leave 19 songs for a subsequent album or possibly some of these songs will never be released? ?

My prediction is a Davinci Code release this summer, followed by a festival or two, then the album release come November which will be followed by a world tour starting in the spring of 2007.

I wasn't as disturbed by his comments about the album not being finished as I thought I would be. It just feels different this time. I also love his attitiude towards Chinese Democracy. Sounds like he's realized you cant make the greatest album ever, and those comments also sounded like he was letting certain segments of his fanbase know that its not gonna change the world. I also liked how he categorizes The Blues as one of his favorites. I always figured that would be a major highlight of the album. Another cool comment he made was saying how many tracks would be on the album. He officially put the EP theory to rest. :hihi: ?It also sounds like he has more plans after CD. His comments about a complex album and you might like a few songs sounds like there isn't going to be many(maybe none at all) typical GNR rockers on CD. Sounds good to me. : ok:

I too dont really understand the math , he wants 32 songs , 26 nearly done and 13 for the album? Uhhh

Maybe it will be a release and then another a few months apart like SOAD or maybe he has some soundtrack work planned , b-sides etc?

Hmmmmm

Still alot of recording though  and mixing  and mastering and artwork and promotion.  :(

Youre assuming it ever was...I think Slash's info was probably outdated when he announced it, BUT it certainly looks like it's  not out of the question we'll see it by the summer-to echo what Mr. Nixon said, I think he probably is finishing the second record now--so that it can be release while the band is on the road. All rampant speculation, but i imagine with this hitting the press, Merck might have to say something soon!

I'm thankful that Axl gave us an update; this is what I've been pleading for a long time. But I think everyone should be realistic about this project. We are not there yet. Still alot of work to go.

I'm guessing this is the result of the rolling stone interview rumors (ie: there will be no formal interview/photo session in March's issue). Or, maybe it's a pre-cursor.

I sure hope Axl didn't just mean record execs when he says "People will hear music this year."

Interesting that he mentioned that book. Of all the things to talk to Axl Rose about after his long silence, reading material wouldn't be in my list of questions for Mr. Rose (down the line, certainly, but not during one of these once-in-a-lifetime type opportunities). Anyone here read/know of this book? Let the speculations begin!

I still think RIR4 is THE ONLY instance we have a shot of hearing/seeing anything from the band this year. Hopefully I'm wrong and we get a single or soundtrack song on DaVinci Code. But I'm not holding my breath for CD until next fall at the earliest.

ummmmmm, I don't buy it. The reporter asks him about the record and he says "People will hear music this year."  That is not an admission that the album is coming. Since a good reporter does not fill in the blanks, this person would have asked axl to confirm that CD is due this year. Once again, this is the GnR double speak that has plagued press statements for year. When they mean something, they say it. They don't imply it.

I still wouldn't be surprised if we get more than 13 songs on CD.   When he said "of those 13, are slated for the album", I took that to mean that of the 26 FINISHED, 13 are slated.  In other words, a few of the "Unfinished 6" could still potentially be included on CD... Yes, but isn't there a quote where Axl said something like he'd be there when there was no music?  Dang...wish I could find where that was stated.

I kind of took it to mean that the music out there today is mostly crap and we would hear REAL music this year...real music being GN'R, of course.

The lyrics for Riyadh include the word "better", and "Riyadh and the Bedouins" does sound like a temporary title.

I don't mean to temper optimism but there really isn't any evidence that this album is coming this year. In fact, the only confirmed fact is that it isn't done yet. Wow... I think its great that he has broken his silence.  Nice words about former bandmates is always a good thing to hear coming from Axl.

With that being said, does everyone here honestly forget when Oh My God was released, the VMAs, the European tour, NYE shows back to back years, the original Rolling Stone interview, and the 2002 tour?  This is the same kind of reaction we had to those events.  I would not expect this to happen.  History has told us that this will not turn out in our favor (meaning an album release).  You are all once again setting yourselves up to be let down incredibly at which I will be laughing the whole time.   : ok:

I gotta be part of this.

Being a fan since 1991, joining the online GN'R community back in 2001 and reading the board every day, checking in multiple times a day, thinking about Axl, Guns N' Roses and this freakin' board EVERY DAY really starts to get tiring. But this kinda makes it all worth it.

Thanks for taking the time, Axl. Thank you for keeping out faith afloat for a bit longer. Please don't let us down.

In the meantime, I'm plugging Louis XIV, Arcade Fire and Buckcherry. Fantastic and diverse bands that have killer records out RIGHT NOW.

That is all.

Interesting regarding Izzy.  It has long been rumoured that the two have written together during short stints in last twelve years.  I have heard of a late 94/95 period where they briefly worked together, and it circulated through studio hands that the two were in contact late in 2002.  Also, I think that due to family ties, and ties back home in Indiana, these two have stayed the closest (of the original band members) during the last twelve years.  I have a feeling the two have sat around a campfire laughing, somewhere near W. Lafyette Indiana during the past five years!!!????    ;) :hihi:   :hihi: ;)

I would be very interested if there any credence to Izzy and Axl speaking recently; esp. with Buckethead leaving, and the completion of the album.  It really makes one wonder if he has heard Chinese Democracy, contributed ideas to it, or contributed some studio time and songs?  On the other hand, I wonder if Axl has heard, contributed ideas to, or contributed some vocals and piano work to Izzy/Duff/Slash 2003 jam sessions (12 song ideas Slash mentioned)??  Very interesting that Axl brings this up, at this time.

Also, it should be noted, that the public lovefest between Slash and Axl--both using "love" to describe the other, within one month's period, is intriguing--to say the least.

I have heard from my buddy Darren, that Tommy is really torn right now.  Also, Paul W. has some new songs that he wants Tommy to jam on.  Very interesting times.

Are we going to see Chinese Democracy, and then a reunion right on it's heals?  Which comes first, because they are both gonna happen!

Nice to see some action!

Mysteron, where there is smoke there is fire.  Have you heard anything about that other great songwriter from Indiana?

Ouch... sorry. Can't let that one go. Not wanting a reunion does not a non-fan make. I would like to see the guys accept an award together or something or be part of a VH1 tribute concert thing, but a reunion probably is not best. GN'R, although very influential and authors of a powerfully important catalogue, are not a comtemporary band as we knew them. The old guys playing the old songs would without a doubt come off the same as Motley Crue's Circus of Nostalgia. The two bands (GN'R and VR) are forging ahead. The two bands are making every effort to 'fit in' to the current musical landscape without becoming a tribute to their pasts. I think that a true reunion could be a step backward, not forward. I want to hear more music from all members and I think that the current situation may be the best way to ensure that it does happen. As a GN'R fan, I do not want a reunion.

"We're working on thirty-two songs, and twenty-six are nearly done," he says. Of those, thirteen are slated for the final album."

Axl said THE FINAL ALBUM.  Does he mean there will be 13 songs on the last cd released in the "Trilogy"?  Maybe Chinese Democracy will have more than 13 songs?  I'm probably reading into this too much though.

Well, i hope this isn't true---because if Axl is really sincere about it this time and Tommy bails, I'd really be shocked. Ultimately, we all gotta make up our own minds, but I would hope that Tommy knows how many people would be devastated if he left and this thing got derailed. Then again, I'm sure all the band members are leery of everything at this point, not without good reason-stay Tommy!

Sounds like some people don't want the wait to end by saying it won't be out this year. hehe

Sounds like he has enough songs for 2 albums and an EP. ?That would rock. ?13 songs too few? I don't think so. I rather 13 great songs than 3 great songs and 17 fillers. ?I still think Axl reached perfection in this album, why else would he release it. ?None of the previous albums were junk. ?I just want to hear these songs. It's starting to look promising. ?: ok:

I wouldn't go all reunion-crazy simply because Axl is talking with Izzy and is saying nice things about Slash. As someone has mentioned, it seems he's been speaking with Mr. Stradlin on and off for awhile-these guys were brothers for a very long time. As for his comments on Slash, my guess is that perhaps with his life's work maybe nearing a completion, maybe Axl isnt as bitter as he was and is trying to move past-well, the past! and i say good for him : ok:

To all the people saying Axl is "suddenly speaking well of Slash"...Axl said the essentally the same thing in the RS2000 interview

"Basically, to me, it was because I am watching this guy and I don't understand it. Playing with everyone from Space Ghost to Michael Jackson. I don't get it. I wanted the world to love and respect him. I just watched him throw it away.'' - RS '00

"I love the guy, I always wanted everyone to know how great he was, but...."
- @ the Korn launch party

Maybe not the EXACT same thing.. but.. someone with some insight can see the statements are almost the same.

As someone who has been hearing these statements of a pending release for more years than I would like to think about, I would say don't get your hopes too high. Axl has said himself a number of times before that the release will happen shortly and years have passed since. Like everyone else, obviously I hope this time it is for real and the album will come out soon, but I am not expecting it until I get it in my hands.

The best part of this interview was that he said he has been talking to Izzy. I would think that if he had been talking to Izzy, Izzy would for sure have at least listened to some songs and given his two cents about them. Best case senario would obviously be that he has helped with the writing of some songs, but I even him gave some input is still awesome.

Axl talking to Izzy obviously doesn't mean that a reunion is pending, but at the very least it could be the first steps in a process of getting the old guys all talking again and who knows where that could lead. ?: ok:

I concur, but this time he said "I love the guy", so now we can squelch all the bullshit around here from people who insist that Slash and Axl hate each other. ?THEY DON'T!

Quote
Plus.. Izzy calls Axl about once a year.. (izzy says this in an interview)... so.. just because Axl talked to him.. doesn't mean anything.

Sure it does, it means that Axl and Izzy are not completely estranged from one another, as we've been led to believe by Izzy's past interviews where he said he showed up at Axl's house only to be turned away at the front gate by Axl.

No, none of this spells reunion, I completely agree, but that's okay. ?If they are all at peace with one another, that's a good feeling for the fans to have. ?It will lead to less of these silly feuds among fans over whose side they have to take.

As someone who has been hearing these statements of a pending release for more years than I would like to think about, I would say don't get your hopes too high. Axl has said himself a number of times before that the release will happen shortly and years have passed since.

The time is right, eh? ?He said during the 2002 mini-tour overseas that the "timing felt right" and that he was going to disappoint his naysayers in one swoop.

That was three 1/2 years ago and he disappointed his fans instead, and he's done it too many times for me to trust him.

I have not posted in a very long time. I have been coming here on a pretty consitent basis to see what is going on. Needless to say I was shocked to see new pictures of Axl. I was excited and thrilled. Now I come on and see he actually spoke to the press. I am cautiously optimistic, but at the same time I am apprehensive. This gets me the most.

It's confusing, and I will not read into what it means. I will just continue to hope that things will start heading in the right direction. I am excited, and this is some of the best news I have seen in a very long time. ?

Seriously though , when I actually walk into a store and buy Axl's album it will seem like a long chapther of my life is over. Since waiting for this album I've brought a child into the world , watched friends , family , relationships , pets , jobs come and go .... it seems like the one constant has been waiting for this fucking album of music.

LMFAO.?

I'll just be glad to be able to go buy it , hear it and have this all OVER with , cause never again will I put as much into waiting for an album of music like I did this one. Constant trolling of GNR boards at all hours of the day for any tidbit of info , the work you put into trying to convince people the new band are cool and the material will be strong and axl still "has it" ... it's really comical when you stop and think about it.

How true. How true.

Ouch...
I respect your opinion but I can't agreed with it. What's wrong with Motley Crue? go see it live like I did, maybe it'll change the way you think now.  Hell of a show.

I have seen AC/DC three times. ?I would see them 100, when you got it, you got it. ?GNR is in a class with Led Zepp, The Who, AC/DC, The Stones.....

Motley Crue is a notch below, though great, they were never really preceived to be as "real" as GNR. ?GNR was America's big band for a few years, actually the worlds biggest band. ?Motley never made it that big.

Yeah, this kinda struck me as intersting b/c we know Roy Thomas Baker, who was Queen's producer and produced the new Darkness CD was attached to CD at one time, and perhaps some of his influence possibly carried over even after his departure.

oh also I have a slight theory, could IZZY actually be BACK IN GUNS??!!
The reason I think this could be possible is other than the fact he mentioned now he spoke to him the other day, the last time we heard from Axl (March 2004 I think) was the press release when BH left. If you remember he said Bucket leaving has put them in a better position but he wouldn't give any more details. Do you think this meant Izzy replacing BH?? Think about it, that would explain the silence too. Izzy re - recording all BH's parts and writing/recording new shit with Axl. Maybe Axls keeping it quiet so its a big surprise.

I'm sure it won't sound anything at all like Guns N' Roses. But then when they've got Finck, Fortus and Brain...I don't want them to sound like Guns N' Roses. It's a totally new band, and I'm really looking forward to hearing the new songs. However, I'm a bit suspicious when Axl said that it won't sound like Axl Rose. Does that mean he's gonna be swaying away from his typical singing voice? That would be interesting.

I'm very much intrigued with the Queen mention. Can anyone explain what he meant by "arrangements"?

I don't think Izzy would be playing Buckethead's lead parts--if anything he would be contributing to the writing, and fine tuning process at this point. ?I would not imagine Izzy playing at all on this project, but if they talked, I am sure he listened to a few of the tunes and made his thoughts known. ?

Who knows, Axl may have been just screwing with the reporter when he said that.

Operatic orchestrations-think "The Prophet Song" from Queen's 'Night at the Opera' which included some weird harmonizing and use of bizzare instrumentation. That's my guess.

I agree-I doubt Izzy would be back in guns in any real capacity....part of the reason he left was because he didnt like the limelight and the road-and he's been pretty damn consistent about that even after guns. but it would be crazy if he gave axl some thoughts on the album!

Awesome news. On the 2002 tour, he seemed defensive about CD, when asked if it was coming out soon he said "Soon is not the word", then there was that radio interview in Tacoma or Seattle when he was asked about the album and immediately changed the subject.

Here, he sounds much more positive. We have been burned so many times that I will reserve my judgment until I hear more, but for now it's just nice to finally hear from Uncle Axl again.

Quote

I take this to mean he will release Chinese Democracy with 13 songs, then another album within a year after (as someone mentioned earlier, a little like Load and Reload, except with good songs). The rest can either be saved for a 3rd album, used as B-sides or scrapped.

I'll just be glad to be able to go buy it , hear it and have this all OVER with , cause never again will I put as much into waiting for an album of music like I did this one. Constant trolling of GNR boards at all hours of the day for any tidbit of info , the work you put into trying to convince people the new band are cool and the material will be strong and axl still "has it" ... it's really comical when you stop and think about it.

and that my friend is why all of us th epeopel who have been here for quite some time, believing and riding this roller coaster will be in pure joy on the day we have that album in our hands. It will be totally unmatched.,,,

Does this mean that Axl reads the internet?

He visits this sight, I know it!!!!!!!

I think he asnwered that question in his last press release....he mtions the "support group"...to me hes talking about us the die hards....who ask any1 and every1 in connection tot eh band about the album, etc

I think everytime Axl makes a statement to the press, it's true to what he believes at the time, but he is no way gonna rush to release this album to please someone else, he'll release it when HE wants to, and that could be another 10 years away, who knows???

I agree with that statement.  I don't think he has ever intended to mislead his fans (although one can certainly argue that he's never lead us).

After the 2002 tour (half empty arenas) do you really believe this will be the case?  Yes it is big news, but they already toured with this lineup and it had disaterous results.  Yes I know Buckethead is gone now.

IMO this article shows that those creative writing classes Mr Baltin took really paid off.

All I got out of it is that it appears Axl confirmed that there will be a GNR song on that movie soundtrack.

Can some one please explain this to me?  I have seen it repeated over and over again that a GNR song on the Da Vinci Code soundtrack (or any soundtrack for that matter) looks 'promising'.

For some reason, I hope that the album title has changed.

Me too. I think there is a good chance that when CD comes out, it won't be called that anymore.

Naw.. I love the name Chinese Democracy. Why change a name that has so much buzz attached to it? Call it negitive buzz.. but people want to hear Chinese Democracy... its been in peoples minds for too long to change

Title: Re: AXL SPEAKS!!!

Okay, where to start. By GNR standards, this is, like, five years worth of news in one day.

Quote
Some people are going to say, 'It doesn't sound like Axl Rose, it doesn't sound like Guns n' Roses.'" He then smiles and adds, "But you'll like at least a few songs on there."

I liked that quote a lot. It's a good attitude to have toward this whole thing. I don't recall Axl ever insinuating that Chinese Democracy would change the world, but, of course, the fans expectations have grown over the years. It's smart to let the purists know that this may not be the album for them.

Quote
"We're working on thirty-two songs, and twenty-six are nearly done,"

I was hoping that they were closer to finished than that. Hopefully this whole thing's drawing to a close though.

Quote
"I haven't spoken to Slash in ten years," Rose says. "I love the guy, I always wanted everyone to know how great he was, but.... I was just talking to Izzy the other day though."

I like that part the best. Probably not for the same reason as most of you. None of us really know Axl, but we've developed a certain fondness for the guy over the years. I like the idea of him being happy, and I've always said that I'd like for him to patch things up with the old band members (especially Izzy). They accomplished a lot together. It'd be nice if they could be cordial. That doesn't mean I'm hoping for a reunion or anything. I've been waiting for an epic trippy album for far too long. If the old band wouldn't be interested in that direction, I wouldn't be interested in them returning right now. Maybe in a few years or something.

Overall, it was an interesting interview. Axl came across well. I thought that he looked better and more natural in the pics, and I thought that he seemed happier and more content in the interview. A nice read to cap off an otherwise terrible day.

Just some random thoughts:

- The nice words about Slash and the fact that he talks with Izzy can we assume that the lawsuit between Duff/Slash and Axl is now a matter of formality?

- I think the plan about the 3 cds hasnt changed, or atleast the process (maybe it wont be 3 but 2) because he is still going to record atleast 2 cds worth of material with the 26 songs almost finish. So GNR wont go back to the studio once the thing finally begins.

- I wonder down the line if guest spots with the old line up wont happen, like Izzy playing with Axl or something, a reunion I think will certainly happen but its far away for the moment.

I predict some sort of action in terms of an appearance/single/soundtrack around mid-year, with an album later on Sept-Nov.. a bit like the timeline of events in 91.

Interesting to see some posters who fill this section with negatibity and snide jokes and comments suddenly become quite positive, and some gone extremely quiet.. thought you would..

Just an aside, how much different would Axl's comment have been if he had said, "People will hear THE music this year. " I think this comment would have convinced me that 2006 was the year for the album.

good point KV

that is the only worrying aspect to this statement in my view
such a non-committal type answer, even vaguer than past suggestions

on a positive note, Axl sounds a lot healthier and accepting here - it's really refreshing
this is worlds apart from the BH statement, the OMG press release, the 2002 interview or the "Dive in and find the monkey" fax

and for a guy whos been a huge Guns fan since '88, its a nice feeling hearing him have some respectful and warm words for his former brothers

Just a side note... and believe me, I love Axl and favor him over Slash in this whole dispute... but I'm thinking the whole "I love Slash. I wanted everyone to know how great he was" bit is an embodiment of what was wrong in the relationship. The general public didn't need Axl to show/tell us how great Slash was/is. Slash did that on his own. Even a die-hard Axl Rose fan like myself has to admit that...

BTW: IMHO I think Slash will get a chuckle/smile out of Axl's statement... because after 10 years some things haven't changed... but on the other hand I have to believe that it will warm his heart to know Axl cares about him and respects him despite all the BS. : ok:

-- Finally, this story about the potential release of Chinese Democracy by Guns ?N? Roses should remind you that anything said by Velvet Revolver guitarist Slash should probably be taken with a full-blown salt lick, never mind the grain. March? Really? My opinion: closer to March 2018.

About the reunion theory.. Do you guys really read the article? It says:

As for a reunion with his former Gn'R mates, that seems unlikely. "I haven't spoken to Slash in ten years," Rose says. "I love the guy, I always wanted everyone to know how great he was, but.... I was just talking to Izzy the other day though."

Also, I AM a GN'R fan (since '90) and I don't want a reunion.

Amazing news!

I like a lot of things about the whole story.

1.- He seems to be comfortable to where he is right now. It seems like he's found internal peace.

2.- Everyone in the party wanted a piece of him, everyone. He still has it. There's nobody like him.

3.- Comments on the album. While I didn't particulary enjoyed the part in which he talks about those need-to-be recorded tracks, I liked the way he described the album...there was no tension there, seems like he was talking to a friend about it. No pressure.

4.- "People Will hear music this year" Ok, these could be a single, a Soundtrack, the album or a few gigs. Maybe a late European summer festival tour.

5.- We got ourselves a new title "Better".

6.- I love the fact that he talked to Izzy a few days ago. Like Pandora said, I don't see a colaboration there, but those two were too close to not work thigs out between them. I've also liked what he said about Slash. I'm pretty sure he heard the interview Slash had a few weeks ago.

Finally we got what we wanted. I have a feeling this board will become much optimistic after this. We've waited two years for a statement, we finally got it.

There was a post in there, Saul made it, that pretty much reflects what all of us veteran fans will experience when we get the album. I've waited so much for this...I can almost feel the Cd in my hands.

On a side note Axl likes Science Fiction books ?: ok: I'm currently reading Philip K. Dick's Ubik at the moment. not my favorite genre, but an impressive book so far.

It says 13 are slated for the album. Do they therfore need to finish the other 6 or so songs. It also says they are working on them, it does not say what stage they are at. Perhaps it could be the mixing stages, they need to complete.

Anyway, perhaps the way system of a down released two albums about 6 months to a year apart is what axl is planning. Anyway, i reckon its guns n roses for the download festival in june. They will headline the saturday. This is the day the prodigy are booked for, and axl likes them and played leeds with them. Nine inch nails should also be added just before guns.

Now that would be awsome.

Happy enough to hear the positives from axl though.

Really really great to hear from Mr. Rose again.

Great news also that he is talking to Izzy again (at least once recently...), 'cause almost 99,9 % of us would love to see a reunion sometime in the future, regardless that we will all support and buy any product Axl gives us (as well as velvet revolver, izzy albums, etc) with the current incarnation of the band, as a soloist or whatever he decides to to, just because he is the best singer, best songwriter (hard competence there with his, hopefully, refound friend) and our icon. Also nice to see he has good feelings regarding slash.

I also believe cd is coming this year, doesn't look like march but it seems 2006 will be the year. Damm, I already was plannning on visiting Lisbon this year (one of the most beautiful cities which I still haven't visited), so if they are scheduled to appear at RIR, I'll buy the tickets in a second time. If they aren't announced, still a great visit!

Axl is American, so he would pronounce ' better' with a 'd' in the middle. Beta as pronounced by Axl in RIR has a t in the middle, so he would pronounce ' better'  and ' beta' quite differently. Of course, the journalist could have misunderstood him, but my guess is that the song is actually called 'better'.

I fail to see the good news in this, songs not finished?. That just leaves about no chances for CD to be released in 2006, considering how long mixing, FINISHING SONGS, marketing and all that stuff takes time. yeah, maybe he will release one track for some movie soundtrack or something, but thats probably it. bye bye 2006, welcome 2007. hopefully Axl won't tour without CD, that would just look foolish atm.

I know this has been said before but I'm getting a headache reading 15 pages of neurosis! ?;D Anyhow, the 32 songs can be interpreted in many ways. The 13 for Chinese may be done, may not be done. It is pretty clear to me that he will release 2 albums at least or the three album thing may still be in place. He is not just releasing Chinese and letting the other 19 songs be b-sides or possible soundtrack songs. After all these years he's pared his best stuff down to 32 songs and is going to make everyone of them the best possible song he can. These aren't scraps-the scraps were the 70 songs he was talking about in 1999. I would imagine that after all this time he simply wants to finish all the songs he is going to finish for the Democracy sessions then wipe his hands clean of this chapter of his life. Thus, he could release Chinese soon and work on the other six later or he could finish and tracklist multiple albums (all the songs) before he decides when to release Chinese. He is still crafty and vague so it could swing Killingvector's way and maybe only hear a song soon or it could swing Chinesblues way and we hear the album around Rio. We are just guessing but we do have a lot more info. Finally, he may be specifically making a record that doesn't sound much like Gnr so he can leave the door open for making an old school Gnr album later. He has a lot of options-but let's hope he acts on them.

Wow, awesome, I haven't read any post on here yet (I can't beleive 15 pages already :o )

Anyway working on 32 songs, 26 are nearly done, 13 will be on "The Album" and "The Record" (He didn't specifically mention Chinese Democracy but the quotes are taken out of context soooo it does'nt really mean anything i suppose)

anyway 13 on CD, 13 for a next album then 6 left over for album 3 or is that idea out the window now?

And we'll hear music this year? cool...finally i am pretty excited to hear something new.

Also he compliments Slash, and has talked to Izzy?!! that's pretty cool!! On top of that Slash says that he's excited to hear Axl's new cd and that there are no hard feelings with Axl at all. What the fuck is this world coming to? A yaer ago, fuck a month ago i would've never imagined statements like those to be made. Maybe a reunion in a few years isn't really that big of a stretch huh?

And "Better"?!!! there is a Song Title we haven't heard before i don't think.

Rumors that Papa Roach only played at RIR3 was because Axl wanted them to play with Guns

K i finished reading all the posts

Is it possible that Izzy talked to Axl and Axl told him that it would be out in a few months then Izzy mentioned it in passing to Slash?

Slash's comments said he hasn't talked to Axl "Directly". and that he has heard alot of rumors over the years but this time he think's its true. Just an idea i had whilst reading some of the posts.

-- Finally, this story about the potential release of Chinese Democracy by Guns ?N? Roses should remind you that anything said by Velvet Revolver guitarist Slash should probably be taken with a full-blown salt lick, never mind the grain. March? Really? My opinion: closer to March 2018.

That's two fucking albums. After all the talk of "there is no album" and "He can't finish a song"
Great point. That is actually the best thing to come out of this Axl sighting. It finally nails the coffin shut on the 'album doesn't exist' theory and the 'two songs finished' theory. With those theories now buried, I think you will see more positive thinking around here in concern to CD. There was always that thought in the back of peoples' minds that it could be a fraud/hoax/ joke, and that fog surrounding CD has now been lifted.

what does he mean by''Some of the arrangements are kind of like Queen''.

Operatic orchestrations-think "The Prophet Song" from Queen's 'Night at the Opera' which included some weird harmonizing and use of bizzare instrumentation. That's my guess.

'Prostitute' is likely to feature as one of the strongest tracks on the
new Guns n'roses album. Although the roots of the song go back to the late
1990's, the meat of the song was actually only recorded in the last
two-three years. Paul Buckmaster who did orchestration for the song told
us "Prostitute is a mid-up, kind of biting, aggressive rhythm section; the
way I wrote for the string section (32-piece, consisting of ten 1st Violins,
eight 2nd Violins, six violas, and eight cellos) gives the song another
dimension of, ice and fire, kind of powerful". Buckmaster also told us
that 'Prostitute' was a 3-5 minute song

'TWAT', an acronym for 'There Was a Time', so is likely to feature on the new album. The song itself features orchestration by Paul Buckmaster.

Taken from sp1at last year.

"People will hear music this year"

Haha, yeah, we may hear music this year, but Axl didn't say it would be his.? ?:hihi:? Always gotta watch the wording when it comes to Axl.

Remember in 2001 when he said the album would be out in June?? Everyone assumed June 2001 but Axl never said what year.? ?:hihi:

That's two fucking albums. After all the talk of "there is no album" and "He can't finish a song"

BTW, when you say "26 are almost done", usually means you've completed a load and you've got some finishing touches on a few more to do.

Meh, whatever.  An album isn't COMPLETE until it's released in stores.  Anything can happen before that time.  A few years ago we kept hearing that Axl had 70 songs done, and that was all bullshit.  Now we hear 26.  Four years from now, it could be 30.  Take it with a grain of salt, like everything else Axl says.

Title: Re: AXL SPEAKS!!!
Post by: madagas on January 18, 2006, 10:32:26 AM
Bridge, wrong-wrong-wrong. Axl NEVER EVER EVER EVER said he had 70 songs done. Don't exaggerate. He said they were working on 70 songs which means they were ideas at that stage. Now, it is 32 which is good-26 nearly done (two albums already-but "nearly" is a little alarming!). He is beginning to focus on what he wants to release.

besides these can be a completely different 32 songs hes working on, i mean we dont know what version of the blues is going to come out, and we ve known the song name of there was a time, but we never heard it so who knows how many variations he has or worked on.

oh and not to bash axl, i think its great he broke his silence, but to say hes like an average guy is a bit of stretch, i mean average guys dont buy the cars he has lol, but that has nothing to do with him releasing CD

While I'm glad Axl has spoken, don't get too jazzed up just yet. ?This year is a long way from over. ?And things change in the GN'R camp seemingly at the drop of a dime.

No, not really. His whole vibe concerning CD seems to have matured. He could have said something much worse than 'nearly done'(soon still isnt the word, it'll be ready when its ready, I'm not concerned with that right now,etc.). It was very interesting how he actually said how many songs would be on CD, and also naming a song title we hadn't heard before. Those comments were obviously aimed towards us, because the general public doesn't give a fuck about how many songs are on CD, or what he thinks about Izzy and Slash.

For Axl, this is
A rather precise statement,
In my opinion.

Far, far better than
"Don't know if soon is the word"
And ol' "Live your life."

Also encouraged
That he listed song titles
(And named a new one!)

It seems to me, too,
That he has a long-term plan
(Multiple albums

And tour, perhaps)
Overall, I'm quite happy.
Thanks, Uncle Axl.

Also, it should be noted, that the public lovefest between Slash and Axl--both using "love" to describe the other, within one month's period, is intriguing--to say the least.

I don't see anything significant here (except a healthier attitude of his former GNR mates) - but I will say I'm damn happy and proud that Axl is coming out of the woodwork. Remember, he didn't appear anywhere public between January 1994 and May 2000. Which makes me even more concerned for the guy.
Remember that he is bi-polar. He can come out and act cordial with people, then the next minute you won;t find him (remember Philly 2002?). He seems to come out when its convenient for him, then disappears for 6 months to a year. If he reappears in the next 2 months, then this is truly news and something is brewing in the nu-GNR world.

Perhaps he'll collaberate with a rock band. Im glad that Papa Roach wants Axl to collaberate, but wait a minute - didn;t Weezer also want to collaberate with Axl back in 2002? What ever happened to that? Axl also failed to collaberate in the past with Ice-T, U2 and Sebastian Bach. He did to his credit collaberate with Don Henley, Gilby Clarke, Steve Jones and Alice Cooper. Hopefully this time Axl means what he says.

I don't understand Axl's plans anyways. Wasn't he supposed to have 3 new albums and a album of b-sides? Now plans have shifted. It would have also been nice if one of his bandmates came out with him, Tommy or Dizzy or Richard. When he goes out solo, it doesn't display the best camaraderie in nu-GNR. At least VR spend time off-stage with each other.

GNR needs to act like a team again, and I mean off stage and off-studio if we want some real news again - that this is a band ready to put out this music they have made in the cover of the four walls of their studio.

i must of promised the record company a song a leat this to stop them bringing out gh2 sound like he still has a bit of work to do and we all know that hes not going to rush them to get them finished but id settle for a studio song from gnr this year give us somthing positive ?to talk about on the ?fourm

yeah, Axl must have convinced the record company once again since the gh2 is on ice... was it ever confirmed or is it the most likely reason that the GH2 was only a threat from universal?

maybe 3050 (3+5=8!!!).

:hihi: :hihi: :hihi: So you like FKD/sf too? Tanks for the good laugh to you too.
hehe I know behind your pc you're in ecstasies over the news. :P

BTW, 26songs :13+13 : 2+6=8!!! :hihi:

I'd be happy to hear what Axl thinks to be great. I've been waiting for new material from him since the Illusions came out. But a single hint like 'you'll hear music this year' doesn't excite me. One thing I've learnt is not to take seriously what Axl says. And in this case he really didn't say too much, so I don't hype myself. I'll hype myself when I'll have CD in my hands and go home to listen the album.

The half empty 2002 tour is irrelevant.

If the album kicks ass, He will sell out everywhere he plays.

Jon Bon Jovi said in an interview when asked how important it is to have a hit single, he said:

"A hit single determines whether u play in stadiums or arenas"

the 2002 tour didnt work cause there was no album.

Tours sell out due to the influx of new fans.

Bands have a hardcore loyal fanbase but that isnt good enough alone to sell out big time stadiums.

U gotta have some buzz and some casual fan interest to totally sell out arenas.

When the album comes out and all the interviews, featured stories and of course the video's,singles etc etc

It will be the hottest ticket around.

Great to hear from him, i wish he would use his site more to speak out a little bit.
I also love his comment on Slash and i would hope that those who have been stirring shit on the Net for the past few years (we all know a few of them) about Axl or about ex-members. Comparing Weiland to Axl and all that negative taking sides BS. Well hope they feel a bit embarressed. ?Should have better things to do. The rest of us can just enjoy whatever comes.

I don't think that will be the case. Axl said it himself, this is a complicated album, which means (as you said in another thread) it is going to take a few listens front to back for people to wrap their heads around it. Not alot of people have that attitude. The people that fill stadiums tend to be a one and done type of a crowd (as far as album listening goes) The hardcore GnR fans, and fans of whatever genre of music this new cd falls into will give it the appropriate listen and bust ass to their shows when they come around. The average fan on the otherhand is going to give it one listen then go off of other word of mouth which might be other "one and done listeners" as well as fickle music critics that may be expecting "Album A" and don't give Axl's vision the appopriate chance before blasting it in print.

There is also the crowd that is going to bash it without even giving it one full listen because it doesn't sound like "Guns N' Roses" (which is the cross Axl will have to bear based on his desicion to keep the name).

The other problem with the 2002 tour was the scheduling of the dates, he should have started with some stronger venues first. Had the tour started in the North East were he seemed to clean up, I think based on great reviews and ticket sales numbers, the other shows in the midwest may have picked up.

The 2002 tour failed/sucked  because they picked poor bands to tour with. CKY and MMMike.  I am sure they fill up the local bar but they are not good enough to help fill an arena.  They should of picked a mainstream rock act that was topping the charts.

I don' t understand how some people here can be so negative! Reading this interview has made my (otherwise shitty) day and I' m quite optimistic about everything that' s going on right now.
I love the comments about the album being complex and different and it' s great to hear him saying something nice about Slash, but the best part IMO is that he' s been talking to Izzy. I' m not hoping for a reunion, but I' m really happy  to see them back together (or at least being in contact with each other)  :peace:

motley crue had a very successful tour last year with no hit single.

still, i see your point and think it has some truth to it.

i don't think the 2002 tour was a failure. and maybe that's because the 3 shows i went to were all sell-outs (chicago, NY, philly). but GnR sold real well in most of the big markets, and just ok in the smaller markets. i think most bands have similar results.

AND, imo, the lack of marketing/promotion was the biggest reason ticket sales weren't stronger.

it?s ?a little different imo, first off, they did have a "hit" in that sick love song or whatever, atleast it ws a new single, plus the whole thing was sort of like a "best of" tour.... plus, they didn?t play a single stadium AND we shouldn?t forget about all the hype "The Dirt" gave motley crue...

anyways, even tho CD might be quite complex like axl said i doubht that there won?t be songs with huge "hit" potential with awsome hooks, so unlike the 02 tour, which was promoted horribly, i think this round will be much more grandios. and with new material out, more people will show. jeez lol, it?s Axl Rose we?re talking about, he hasn?t put his name to anythng that hasn?t become imfamous yet, and neihter will next the thing he does...

Very.

Unless he starts this process off with a radio freindly single, he will have a hard time reaching casual fans.

Think about UYI, they released YCBM which was very catchy and had the same vibe as their previous work. That got fans excited about the album, which help the average fan sit through some of the more complex songs and gain an understanding for them. If he tries to launch this with an overly produced ballad I think It will turn off the casual observer.

It's also inevitable that he will turn off people with the simple fact that this isn't Guns N' Roses as most people know it. Alot of people on this board point to the Greatest Hits as an indicator of the bands current relevance, but the problem is this isn't that band. I just feel that he will lose more casual fans of the old band than he will gain new fans of the new band.

All of those factors will affect albums sold and asses in the seats once he tours.

Don't take this as my opinion of the new band or of the upcomming release, I will be first in line to buy it and will be sitting patiently waiting for Axl to hit the Stage in Boston from the best seat money can buy.

Well that is your opinion. ?What makes you think that he won't start it off with a radio friendly single?  First off, if he chose to release a ballad first, it would not turn off the casual fan, becasue we have heard ballads before from Axl that have had great success..ex, "November Rain". ?Yeah, "You could be mine" started off the Illusions and reminded us of Appetite, but a ballad starting off Chinese Democracy would take us back to the Illusions. ?It's the same theory. ?We are familiar with ballads from him. ?What makes Axl great is that he makes music that appeals to different people. ?While "You Could Be Mine" might appeal to a young pissed off kid, "November Rain" ?could appeal to an older more mature person. ?Hell, they could both appeal to the same person like they do me. ?However, I think he will have plenty of short rocker hits. ?Just because it might not sound like traditional GNR, doesn't mean it won't be good. ? ?

Also, just as it's inevitable that they will lose fans because this isn't the original GNR, they will inevitably gain fans, because this is a new band. ?Think about all the younger people who haven't heard much of Axl in the first place. ?

Motley Crue where succesful without a hit  single because it was the original band reforming after years, had Axl been with the original guys as GNR it would have been a different story, album or not.

Whoa, Axl speaks. That's pretty cool. I for one am interested to hear something from him. All this time and effort has to count for something right?

As for what happens after the album drops? I sincerely doubt you will see GnR at the level they were at during Appetite or UYI. The world of music has changed too much, and if this album is going to have that layer of Queen-like complexity then I don't know how much of a force it will be on the charts. The people that put records on the charts, ie: the pop-culture consumers don't have the attention-span or the kind of taste it would require to get something as epic as what Axl is describing.

But whatever, chart success doesn't really mean much. I just want to hear something quality from these guys.

I think we're talking about someone who has been hurt, let down, and feels betrayed...maybe its taken him X number of years to start to "forgive"

Ok, and by the same token, we have a man (Axl) who has dedicated 14 years and 15 million on his project and is intent on changing the music scene and being on top once again by his own merits (CD).  He has to look good in the eyes of fans.  He wants to prove himself.  A reunion of the old GNR would be a sign of defeat (at least for the forseeable future).

i agree, it would be a sign of...well, maybe not defeat, but a sign that he couldn't do it without them..especially izzy, then slash.

but i think axl could give a shit less about his appeal to the general population...shit, he doesn't give much of a shit about us.....or atleast doesn't really acknowledge us. but on a side note, thats why he's the last true, real rockstar. he's from the path of hero's....beatles-stature, zeppelin-stature, early aero-stature......Axl Rose is Elvis, John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Jimmy Page.....Axl Rose......IS........as mystical and unreachable as any star we've ever known in this country....i guess that's why he still demands respect, recognition, and attention everywhere he goes.....(well, whenever he goes to something public....he's given THE respect)

Im just saying, back to the post, that I think Axl is breaking some kinda ice with some old ties he has....he misses Slash, its written all over that quote.

GUYS, AXL MISSES SLASH!!!! I just get this feeling he wants that good feeling from the past back in his stomach again. I think he'll let this CD play out, Im sure its going to rock, but after that, I wouldnt be surprised to first see VR go under, then THE announcement.

I dont think he mentioned Slash & Izzy just to look good in the eyes of fans.  First of all, it takes away attention from the new band that he wants to promote (why couldnt he say "I spoke to Tommy recently").

IF, however, he makes some kind of statement about the Philly incident, I would concede that he is trying to patch things up with the fans.

Just to be clear, I dont think it's a sign of a reunion.  I'm just happy that they're on speaking terms.

Well, cheers ? for being optimistic. And you never know, it could happen, but I think it would be 7 to 10 years before we see any inkling of a reunion.  Pehaps around RIR HOF time (2012).

but axl has this way of giving up the respect to certain people or groups he likes. he's very respectful to people like elton john, queen, zeppelin. hopefully he'll recognize the institution of the HOF

I totally agree

Axl misses Slash and I am sure Slash misses Axl as well...Yet, we are talking about too big egoes and too many issues involved ( a lawsuit, for eg. )...I don't see any original GnR reunion coming soon ...although I'd surely love it... :'(

Just because they are not fighting with one another doesnt mean they have a desirte to work together once again.

Bands are like marriages. Ex's can be on good terms, but theyre not gonna sleep together again.

Exactly maybe it's a matter of just wanting to be civil with the old guys and put the past behind him as he goes forward with his new band!

Dude. Nothing is "brewing." NOTHING.

Maybe a reunion SOMEDAY.. but its not being talked about now.

Slash "knew" about the Chinese Democracy in March thing because of GH2. There was probably a ultimatum concerning Chinese Democracy... and Slash knew that because GH@ wasnt coming out.. so it ment Axl had agreed on the march date.

Axl and Izzy have talked before. Jesus.

Axl said essentally the same "love" comment in the RS2000 issue.

You people need to stop. Nothing is brewing. Not even close.

They don't have the attention span for Ax's kind of music becasue nobody is making that kind of music.  They don't know any better.

I think people are over-estimating the "impact" of not having the original line-up along.... sure it may irritate a certain segment of the die-hards to semi-die-hards, but the GENERAL PUBLIC!?!? They could give a fvck... they just want a cool album to put on their i-pod... in that regard... Axl will need a few cool, catchy songs to grab people's attention before hitting them with the heavy sh1t.

Plus, the "youngsters" (current teenagers) won't give a damn... they've been hearing about this legend Axl Rose and how dangerous and cool everything was when he was on top, etc. They're not going to get hung-up on the politics of the old band. They'll just want to see if Axl lives up to his advance billing. Crazy, but  some of them are so young they probably don't even realize that Robin Finck was in NIN- so... I don't think they have the AFD or UYI line-up's memorized by heart or anything...

Motley Crue where succesful without a hit? single because it was the original band reforming after years, had Axl been with the original guys as GNR it would have been a different story, album or not.

I think the main reason for the positive remarks towards Izzy and Slash is because Axl knows CD is on the horizon, and wants to prevent a GNR vs VR/ex-members war when the time comes.

The Motley Crue show I went to was bout Half full, maybe 6,000 out of 13,000.

Motley Crue are kinda like Kiss these days, its more about the show than the music *although both bands music kicks ass*

Motley Crue also had a huge VH1 special, Tommy Lee had a reality show come out, Vince Neil had a reality show come out, they had a very popular split so many wondered how they'd react on tour.

They had a phenomenal stage show.

Plus they toured on Red White And Crue, "If i Die Tomorrow" and SIck Love Song were minor hits but they were on TV *Larry King Live* Vh1, they even were on FoxNews.

It was also the original band and it was a great nostalgia trip for a lot of people.

Axl has to do three things to be a touring success again.

1. release some kind of album

2.No more riots, they were cool but there are people who are AFRAID to go to a GNR show for fear of being killed in a riot or being ripped off.

3. Play on time. That rock star shit is annoying, I dont want to sit for 2 fuckin hours waiting on someone to take the stage.

the bands from the 80's *U2,Bon Jovi,Metallica,RHCP* who still sell out everywhere they play and kick ass have one thing in common. they show up, they play on time and they kick fucking ass every single night they play.

Axl cant pull that shit these days cause a lot of people wont buy a ticket just cause they know they arent gonna get home till 2 am.

Ok, what if you get the cd, but you're out of papers?

What is your dog eats all the smoke on release date, and your connection is still on? a 5 mile line to the record store doors?

I see possible troubles here.

Title: Re: AXL SPEAKS!!!
Post by: Axlism on January 19, 2006, 07:59:56 AM
I think it's good news on a few fronts.

First, he went out and talked about it with some definite tone. This isn't Fortus saying "You're sure to see it by fall", or whoever said that a couple years back, this is Axl. He could just as easily say nothing, like in 02 at MTVA..."I don't know if 'soon' is the right word", boy he wasn't kidding.

Secondly, I think with all the record co. executive shuffling of late, as once discussed here I believe, he is under real pressure to put it out, perhaps for the first time. There's no way this record will make money at this point, lest it sells 50 million copies. This is a business, and I think recouping some losses, and getting a tour underway to perhaps turn a buck, or lose the label, are possible ultimatums before Axl. He has done things at his own pace for 11 years now, and GnR was soooo big the label put up with it, and paid for it, but the baby has to be born before it dies in the womb.

Third, he does seem excited about it, and is even giving stylistic details! He knows anything he says at this point will be all over the world in a day, he's no dummy. He did that strip club thing, but that was a 1/2 empty, no press, event that? I believe was just him driving around, wanting a beer, and playing a cdr for the lucky few there. This was a planned move to get some word out, I think 06 is very possible! It's also good that Slash said what he did about March before this, he heard something keep in mind, and Axl's almost immidiate resurface with these words point now to 'SOON"!

On the 'how he looks' comments, I say he put some weight back on, and it suits him better. When he was really drawn looking, after the fat jokes started spreading (which history tells us he takes it personally- See Oxygen comment_Stays in NY- No Philly show) he looked awful. If he has implants in his face, they showed up more when he got thinner, the extra weight makes him look more like Axl now. Oh, and yes, looks like tanning goggles.

On the reunion notes, hmmm. Well, I don't see Adler there. Great he's talking to Izzy. Weird that Slash did say what he did followed by Axl all of sudden saying what he did, all in all, pure speculation, probably pure coincidence. Let's just see the record.

I'd love to see it, my hopes are up.

Warose, he most certainly did make a statement about the album after the VMA'S. That was the late 2002 radio interview where he said the album would be out sometime in 2003. You people really need to get your facts straight. He has only spoken officially on the subject a few times. It really is not that hard to remember. James, he does sound different but he sounded pretty confident in that late 2002 radio interview as well. It's still all talk at this point-nothing more! :hihi:

The first new song from the band in nearly eight years, the electronica-influenced "Oh My God", was released Tuesday on the "End of Days" soundtrack and likely will be on the album, Goldstein was quoted as saying.

Sandman, I actually heard the interviews-Axl's actual voice. Where you find them, I don't know. Trust me. He has said timeframes. I believe the interviews were in Santiago Chile right after Rio and Detroit during the 2002 US tour-after the vma's.
i thought after the vma`s he wasn`t that positive..........?

My prediction is a Davinci Code release this summer, followed by a festival or two, then the album release come November which will be followed by a world tour starting in the spring of 2007.

This IS best case scenario. I'd be happy with half that happening! I hope it ALL does! : ok:

Don't forget a new Music Video!  Hahahahhhahhaha   and if GNR tours again I am going to fly out to see them within the first 5 shows for sure. I'm not waiting around for it to get cancelled!

In 1999 Axl describes the album as "heavy and aggressive"... in 2006 he describes it as "complex and queen like".... sound like completly different records

I really hope we get all the stuff they worked on from 1997-2006... I want everything!

IF the album is completely new, meaning its material that was recorded from 2002 till now, then 4 years isn't that bad to wait for an album, however we heard so many different stories the past 10 years.  I definetly hope we get a mix of everything that was recorded too.  I know Axl has talked about the album in 1999 and 2002, but this time it does seem different when Axl spoke.  But then again it's not like we haven't heard all of this before.  So what is the next announcement tour, cd release or does Axl go back into hiding?

Sandman, no. Axl has given timeframes in the past. Jan 2001 he said out by June or July 2001-radio interview. In December 2002-radio interview, he said the record would be out "sometime in 2003". He is not exactly reliable either. :-\

could anyone provide a link to these exact quotes? (or ANY direct quote where axl mentions a timeframe for the release)

i tried looking for exact quotes from Axl, but couldn't find any.

(cause i certainly do not trust "sources" that CLAIM he said something.)

HTGTH has the section ARTICLES. Go through the years from 1999 to 2003 and you'll find Axl's comments on the release.

I agree...but it has been 14 years. The laws of averages has got to come to our side sooner or later.
With all the crap that's happened over the past 7 years, I can't imagine the signs over the past month being very positive....even if we are a little pessimistic because of how often we've been burned in the past.

This is my first time, writing to any gn'r forum.Cause over the years to me all those news and gossips weren't worth discussing. But the main thing that struck me about this one is that he sounds like he is given up making a perfect record.I always believed that if anyone in the world could make a perfect album, that person would be axl rose.

Maybe we are reading too much into what a guy in a rock n' roll party said. But i'd like to think that's it's a planned thing.Cause he talked so politic. His words seemed to be chosen very carefully. He took a really great risk cause if nothing happens till thge end of 2006 i don't believe that anyone will believe what he says before the album comes to the music markets. He's not stupid, i know he is planning something to happen very soon. This wasn't just a check if the media still cares about him.

Anyway,  the blues is a great song and i can't wait to listen to the improved studio version of it.And all these years i knew a guy that wrote estranged, sweet child o' mine and november rain among other very poetic songs couldn't be as a jerk as the media and the old members tried to show him.İt was great to finally hear some normal stuff that showed he is a nice, normal (well, sometimes) guy.For the past 6 years i idolized and worshiped the guy and it's gonna be awesome to get high with new stuff,finally...

- The old members, especially Slash, said positive comments about Axl.

CD has got to happen this year, even Axl knows you cant stretch this thing out for much longer.

As far as making the perfect record, it'll never happen from Axl's point of view, maybe he finally realizes that. He is a perfectionist and how do you satisfy a perfectionist? It could be as near perfect of a record that has ever been made, but we'll have to see on that one.

That's what I thought warose.

So, mates he hasn't described the album as perfect or himself as a perfectionist.

The greatest album ever made is a bit different from a perfect album, as there is no such thing as perfection in this world. Every music fan has their own greatest ever, or even the most perfect album ever, knowing it's not the absolute. Like cafcnickdugay and mike said,  it's rather natural for an artist to aim to create the bestever shit. They'd push hard to make the work as perfect as possible, or at least in their eyes. So does Axl and I don't see him giving up this spirit.

He may be an ambitious musician and demand a lot of himself and his band. But it is questionable if he believes in the pie in the sky called the perfection. as He knows nothing last forever.

There is a big difference between taking time to make an album right, and taking a decade to make an album right. If it takes that long to put out a good album, then something is either wrong Axl's confidence in the band or in himself.

There has to be a point where it just isn't going to get any better, and I would have to think that date past with the Clinton Administration (maybe he is holding out for '08).

And as far as "Axl having to do this right" because of the huge pressure on him and the band.... That is a load of crap, He put that pressure on himself by taking the better part of a decade to make this album and by putting the band in the position of having to fill the shoes of the former members of Guns N' Roses.

i agree that he put the pressure on himself by spending the last 6-7 years to record CD, but i don?t think that it was his intention to do so, or that the only reason was he felt it wasn`t perfect. but there`s probably much more we don?t know ....

Guns N' Roses fans: your 13-year wait for a new album is over. Or is it? The US rockers are upholding the finest tradition of the 'creative hiatus'. Fiona Sturges reports

There is perhaps no greater mark of artistic genius than a mind-bogglingly lengthy gestation period for a new work. It signifies a mind weighed down by its own brilliance. It says that inspiration cannot be bidden; you have to wait for it to strike. If it takes years, so be it; such is the price of great art.

Fans of Guns N' Roses, the unfeasibly successful heavy-metal band of the late Eighties and early Nineties, have been tortured by the endless delay on Chinese Democracy, their third "proper" album, 13 years in the making. After running up a reported $10m (?5.6m) in studio bills, employing eight producers and hiring and firing at least 20 musicians, the singer Axl Rose still hasn't come up with the goods.

But, if recent reports are reliable, the wait may be over. Rose told Rolling Stone: "People will hear music this year... It's a very complex record. I'm trying to do something different. Some people are going to say, 'It doesn't sound like Guns N' Roses.' But you'll like at least a few songs on there."

This isn't the first time the album has supposedly been near completion. In July 2004, Tommy Stinson, the Gunners bassist, said the album was "almost done". At the time, Rose put the delay down to "legal and other issues" including "ego management" and "the psychological mind-game" of keeping a large band "simmering but pulling in the same direction". A few months later, he advised fans on a website that they'd be better off waiting for the resurrection of Christ.

Maybe Rose just doesn't know when to admit defeat. In the late Eighties, Guns N' Roses were just about the biggest band on the planet, but then the guitarists Slash and Izzy Stradlin and bass player Duff McKagan walked out. Ever since, Rose has had a shifting cast of band members and embarked on some catastrophic tours, claiming all the while to be working on a masterpiece.

Pop is littered with examples of songwriters either reluctant to get on with the job in hand, or incapable of it. Following his copious output in the 1960s and 1970s, Scott Walker dropped off the musical radar until 1995, when he made the wilfully inscrutable Tilt. Asked what he'd been doing with his time, he said he'd "sat in pubs watching guys throw darts".

Kevin Shields' reaction to the success of My Bloody Valentine's 1991 album Loveless was to build a 16ft barbed-wire fence around his house and swear never to darken the music industry's doorstep again.

Kate Bush's tardiness in following up 1993's The Red Shoes is music-industry legend. In a pop landscape increasingly starved of originality, her silence grew deafening - as did the demand for a comeback. Last November's Aerial was a spectacular 12 years in the making. In spite of its laboured inception, it was a critical and commercial triumph and sealed Bush's status as a bona fide legend.

Then, of course, there is Brian Wilson. The creative force behind The Beach Boys took 37 years to complete Smile, his answer to The Beatles' Sergeant Pepper. His fragile mental state during recording sessions led to him to having a sandpit installed in his living room so he could feel the beach beneath his feet. After trying - and mercifully failing - to burn the master tapes, Wilson threw in the towel and his "teenage symphony to God" ended up locked away in a vault.

After that, he didn't go near a recording studio for 20 years. It wasn't until last year that the partially rehabilitated Wilson dusted down the old Smile tapes with the help of the original producer Van Dyke Parks and released the album, to huge acclaim.

These delays conjure up pictures of an artist in torment, searching for their muse. But in the notoriously indisciplined world of rock, this is not always the case. Wilson's 20-year sabbatical might look like a punishing period of artistic purgatory until you learn that he spent much of that time in bed, only getting up to take delivery of consignments of cocaine and fast food. Unhinged he may have been, but these are hardly the actions of a man looking to get back to work.

One more persistent rumour about Kate Bush is that, rather than summoning her muse, she spent the last decade baking cakes. Two years ago, on visiting the singer at her home to see what she'd been working on, her label bosses were apparently confronted with a teatime spread that would have put Mrs Beeton to shame.

These cases cannot be called writer's block, but there have been plenty of artists claiming to have suffered from this in the hope that it will afford them the mythical status of tortured genius. In fact, "writer's block" can hide a multitude of sins. For a slacker singer-songwriter living off the spoils of the last multimillion-seller, there can be no better excuse to avoid going back to work. The rumour of creative constipation can be the perfect smokescreen for the artist whose greatest work is behind them, and for whom the prospect of a worthy successor seems impossible. In such instances, one imagines, it's less a case of writer's block than stone-cold fear.

The Stereo MCs, creators of the Zeitgeist-surfing, award-winning 1992 album Connected, took nine years to get back in the studio - but the resulting LP, Deep Down and Dirty, bombed. The Scots siblings The Proclaimers took seven years to follow up their Hit The Highway album, citing the death of their father and writer's block as the reasons.

And who could blame The Stone Roses and Elastica for clamming up when it came to their respective second albums? The Roses' sophomore effort Second Coming, released five years after their 1989 debut, failed to live up to the title's promise, while Elastica's The Menace, released after a six-year hiatus, was dead on arrival.

For a songwriter locked in artistic paralysis, a suitable theme can often be staring them in the face. Pete Townshend managed to haul The Who out of a creative quagmire with the lyrics: "When you take up a pencil and sharpen it up/ When you're kicking the fence and nothing will budge" in "Guitar and Pen". The Fall's Mark E Smith pulled off the same trick with "How I Wrote Elastic Man" - "I'm living a fake/ People say, 'You are entitled to and great'/ But I haven't wrote for 90 days." Last year, Nick Cave revealed the same affliction in "There She Goes My Beautiful World", complaining: "Me, I'm lying here, with nothing in my ears/ Me, I'm lying here for what seems like years/ I'm just lying on my bed with nothing in my head."

Of course, there's a difference between writer's block and simply being a perfectionist. But there is something compelling about a once-brilliant songwriter in creative exile. The artist Marcel Duchamp gave up painting at the age of 36 and devoted the rest of his life to playing chess. As for Axl Rose, maybe he'd be better off binning the album. That way, he can at least be sure the legend will live on.

'Chinese Democracy' will be released later this year. Allegedly

/jarmo

Axl defenetly have a great sence of humor! :hihi:

I guess it must be kind of embaressing for Axl to come to someones(korn) party and the first thing that happens when he walks in the door is that they put on paradise city.

Funny. :hihi:

Gypsy comment:  Notice how the quotes with the Slash and Izzy mentions are NOT in the mag.

And the line about the 13 songs slated for "the final album" disappeared as well.

What he needed to pee and the first place he came across happened to be the building where Korn was partying?

I guess he was invited and decided to show.

but didn't the RS article say "Rose surprised people"?  So, if that were the case, I doubt he R.S.V.P in advance.

But, it's not like anyone is gonna kick Axl out of their party anyway. :hihi:

possible i suppose never thought of it that way :hihi: , Munky's reaction didn't seem angry though

no, munky was cool.  but the reason I read it that way was munky said in the RS magazine GS scanned, "I was like was Axl at my party or was I at his?" or something like that.

 :hihi:

Ah, yeah the way i understood that was everyone wanted to talk to Axl, including Munky. Nobody was interested in Korn after Axl showed up

it's because of the rarety of axl... Korn is seen all the time, seeing axl is like seeing big foot.

Quote from: Axl Rose
I was just talking to Izzy the other day though.

After reading that quote, do you think maybe Axl might have received an e-mail like this?:

Dear Axl,

Two questions:? (1)? What exactly were you talking to Izzy about?? and (2) Am I still in GNR?

/s/ Richard Fortus /s/

P.S.? Remember this?:
"basically, richard's the guy that we were always looking for" -? axl rose

No. Seeing as Axl only talked to him (which he does from time to time).. why would Fortus be worried?

... why would Fortus be worried?

So what? All Izzy and Axl did was talk.. why should Richard be worried?

Richard: "Wait, OMG Axl talked to IZZY?! O man.. I must be out of the band... even though they've talked before.. and even though Izzy probably calls Axl about once a year."

Maybe im missing something...
