Title: GNR references on Conan O'Brien
Post by: Bill 213 on August 11, 2004, 12:53:24 AM
Just watching Conan......he was doing his analogies.............it was Metallica is the the documentary SOME kind of monster......as Axl Rose is to "Some kind of busboy".....then he goes now it works like Axl will call me and be like you shouldn't have done that (in axl's screetchy voice) then he sings a little paradise city.

He is just bitter.  Conan is not even funny.  Btw from what I heard, the metallica movie makes the band look like pussies.

Ya he was like shes got eyes of the bluest skies, it was good though. Publicity is good , Conan was good, sorta true too in a way cause Axl complained about Conan at Madison I think and Conan was their or rumoured to be.

Yeah Conan surely does like to pick on Axl. MEtallica are pussies, Any rock band that wants to have a documentary on the big screen to make some extra money should be in a class with SPINAL TAP. There I said it

yeah just the previews of the movie was pretty gay.  Lars is all growling in Hetfields face when they're fighting or some shit.  But no I was just saying the crowd got a pretty good rise of axl's expense so that wasn't a good moment for him

It was all good fun , but ya he does. I  think Axl will probs show GNR on Letterman first and then Leno. I dont know if he would do Conan.

But hey hes getting mentioned which is pretty cool,  maybe hinting that they know something might be happening soon.

Conan is definitely my favourite late night talk show host...he seems to appeal to a younger demographic than Jay Leno.  I laughed out loud at the "Some Kind of Bus Boy" joke, because, hell, it's funny, and it's partly true, in that Axl is no longer the biggest rock 'n' roll star in the world.  I love it when anybody mentions Axl or Guns N' Roses, but Conan's done it a few times.  Aside from tonight's joke, there was also this time where the band played Air Supply and he did an Axl-type snake dance (explicitly mentioning it as such).  And the time Slash did a "Celebrity Secrets" segment.

Overanalysis?  Yes.  But it was funny, is all I'm saying.  :hihi:

Kilborn is much better than Conan. And Axl has been in hiding for a few years again, so of coarse he is not going to be the biggest rock star in the world, but he will be again once CD drops.  Just look at what happened when he did the VMAs a few years ago.  One of the highest rated MTV VMAs segements ever.

Axl busted his balls back and the MSG show right? With Conan in attendence right?

Now it's Conan's turn.

No big deal.

You guys who get your panties in a wad over this crack me up. I may cancel cable and just post threads like "Axl is a crybaby" and watch the sparks fly.... :hihi:

conan is funny, hey he just does what every other comedian does and that is poke fun at things in his life and pop culture to get people to laugh.  so what he poked fun at axl, its not like he said something really bad about him, he just pointed out something obvious in a funny way about someone who use to be the bigest dog in town when it came to rockstars.  And dude Axl cant be the biggest rock star out there cause he really isnt out there, but whne he is he grabs the spotlight, like dave-gnfnr2k said look at the VMA segment which was not axls best performance, all though i found it very exciting, yet was still one of the highest rated segments in VMA history so i wouldnt worry about it or give it much importance all thgouh im sure axl will go on a rant which could be funny

peace :peace:

Conan rules, and what he said is perfectly acceptable given that Axl hasnt done anything.
Ofcourse he can still drop CD and rock da world but its still in the wait-and-see category.

You have to be kidding me. Kilborn is one of the most boring human beings on the planet. Also, Conan is not a bitter man - he seems to be quite the opposite to me.

And who cares if Axl is going to be big again once CD drops? Doesn't make the joke any less funny, and it's also possible that people will hate CD - that even YOU might hate CD. I can't wait until Kilborn inevitably insults Axl and you go "I FUCKING HATE KILBORN, WHAT A BITTER MAN!"

First off Kilborn has already insulted Axl a few times, so there ya go.
I just dont think that Conan is funny, he is boring as hell and his guest suck.
I just dont think he is that funny, and the axl joke was lame.
If it was funny (like the snl skit) its one thing but the joke sucked.

I would LOVE to see a documentary with the old GN'R.  Just seeing guys getting wasted and Axl screamin' at everyone.

Anyway, I agree that any mention of Axl's name is good.  Have any late night hosts made any jokes about Axl's newer look?

I agree that Craig Kilborn is awful, but NOBODY is as bad as Jimmy Kimmel.  How that guy got a late night show is a mystery...

I should hope Axl would go on Conan. I would have immense respect for the man if he did. To show that he understands it's just a joke - which is more than some people around here can do - would be one of the best things for Mr. Roses image in a LONG time.

Actually Axl and co. played the Fox Late Show in 88 (used to love her and you're crazy)  and conan has made fun of Axl's braids before.  Yeah I think if Axl and Conan got face to face they would have a good laugh.  It's just a good hearted joke, Conan's a huge GNR fan, just misunderstanding of the new look and attire.

B. You're all obviously not smart enough to realize that those bits make fun of everybody in show business, not just Axl Rose.
C. You're all obviously not smart enough to realize Conan rarely ever mentions Axl.? During the 1500 or so shows Conan has put on over the past 11 years, I've heard him crack a joke about Axl Rose maybe five or six times.

And just to beat Jarmo to the punch, his response to my post will be...

Oh well, the ignorance and idiocy pervading this thread had to be refuted somehow.? It just cracks me up that some lamebrains here truly believe that Conan sits around all day and thinks up ways to insult Axl Rose.

Come on, we take ourselves way too seriously around here.  Well, some of us, anyway.  We need a good joke every now and then.  Rock 'n' roll is supposed to be fun, right?  Conan throws a bit of humour the way of GN'R fans, I think we might as well just appreciate it for what it is: a good joke.

The thing about Conan is, somehow, the best part of his show is just his own charm.  Look at his monologues.  While Jay Leno has like two dozen jokes in a monologue, Conan has four and fills it in with stuff like, "Yep, good show tonight, am I right? ....Okay, nobody cheered, I guess we suck."  You're either a Conan person or not.

Personally, I appreciate ANY reference to Axl Rose in popular culture.  I'm just that much of a GN'R nut.

Don't get your panties in a bunch. Conan does write some of the jokes along with his team of writers. Wether or not he wrote the Axl jokes would be hard to tell, maybe there is one of his team of writers who just likes to rip on Axl.

Before having his own tv show in 1993, Conan wrote for the Simpsons and then SNL, so you can't sit there and say he doesnt write his skits.

On a side note the fact the audience laughed and they can put a joke out about Axl every now and then and get a good laugh, shows that the general audiene of America still does atleast know who he is, after not doing much for the last decade.

On Tuesday night i think it was, the Late Night with Conan O'Brien was doing analogies.  One was:

Metallica's New Documentary: Some Kind of Monster :: Axl Rose's New Documentary: Some Kind of Bus Boy.  I actually thought that was one of the funniest thing on Conan.  But then he did an impersonation of Axl in a high pitched voice saying "Conan, thats not funny man!" and then sang the first couple lyrics of Sweet Child O' Mine.  I was laughing hystarically.  No offense to Axl but it was really funny.

Any ways Conan's analogies usually have some truth to them so does any one know of a documentary on Axl that is going to be aired any time soon?

I have been reading this board for two weeks and i am getting sick of everyone here thinking guns n roses can't do anything wrong, I understand it is a gunner board but Metallica arn't pussy's. There music is amazing and so is guns'n roses. Both bands have magor problems it's just Guns'N roses exposed it for everyone to see where Metallica didn't in some way, but I won't go on because I like Guns N roses heaps but both bands are cool and i'm sick of everyone abusing them.

No I am not saying one writer sits down and thinks of nothing to do but rip on Axl, I am saying maybe he is a Gunner Fan and likes to pop one out every now and then I never said that he had a write who just writes about him. That would be absurb. But if Axl said something at the MSG show about Conan, thats enough fuel for them to crack out a joke every now and them. They have a good sick, sense of humor and they love to get to people.

Where do you get this from I never said he has someone who sits there and just rips on Axl all day. All I said was maybe there is one of his writers who likes to throw in a Axl joke. Just like one of his writers loves to do the Frankensten wastes a minute skit, when Most of the time the audience isnt into it at all or laughing, and they have alot of skits the audience doesnt get into (that I think are funny) Like the fed ex pope, I am sure there a writer who likes to do those skits ripping on the fed ex pope even though the audience doesnt really get into this.

You got to stop looking so far into the meaning of what someone is writing. I do not believe there is any one writer who writes about one subject. But each writer has his inside jokes or things he loves to rip on. Never would I believe and I hope others wouldnt believe there is one guy who writes JUST about axl.

"Axl Rose wrote, 'taking my clothes out of the dryer at the laundromat'".   ::)

Hahaha.  ::)

They just did another joke about mr rose, this one was called celebrity surveys.

the survey question was. I hate it when fans____

Neil Young Wrote: Ask for my autograph when i'm at? a restaurant

Bruce Springsteen wrote: Sing my songs back to me

Axl Rose wrote: Catch me taking clothes out of their dryer :hihi:

Anybody else think that one of the writers either hates axl or is pissed off at him? Usually when they do the jokes, they have someone that has recently been in the news. Like last time they went after axl was during the riots. Now, a year and a half later, they suddenly throw two jabs in three shows.

Tonights Conan O'Brien featured a segment where he showed celebrities and said he asked them to fill out surveys. Anyways.. for each little thing they showed 3 celebrities, 2 were serious, and 1 was funny for each one.

Axl was in one that said:

I hate it when fans

Neil Simon said "ask for my autograph when im busy"
Bruce Springsteen said "sing my songs back"
and
Axl Rose said "catch me taking clothes out of their laudromat dryers"

Conan sure is a funny guy though :D

See I think one of his writers just like to throw in the casual Axl rip. Maybe of of the writers is just waiting for CD and is lil upset.  Not saying that it is just one writer's job to rip on Axl, but I think someone likes to throw in the casual remark, just like the casual remark on How fat Rueban Studdard is, or the casual remark on How Courtney Love is drugged out of her mind. Its all in good humor.

Another Axl joke tonight. HILARIOUS one at that. It was a Celebrity Survey bit ("Complete the statement.")

Statement: "I hate it when my fans..."

"Axl's" Answer: "...catch me stealing clothes from their laundromat dryer."

Ok, let the Conan bashing re-commence, asses!

That isnt enough a good comparison. A minister lives to serve god, unless you live everyday to go out and preach Conan to people thats not a good comparison, With a Minister you know who you are talking to, someone online saying He loves conan is something totally different.

leno rips off of the Howard Stern Show too much. They stole the 'jaywalking bit' as well as Stuttering john himself among other sketches.
Howard Stern is a huge pussy. I heard him complain for years about being married and if he was single about the 100's if not 1000's of woman on the air he said he would like to have sex with. As soon as he got disvorced he got a GF. He complains all the time FCC is after me. Clear Channel is out to get me.  All morning shock jock's rip me off. Leno rips off everything from me.  It gets old. It might be cool to listen to him describe a hot women, but unless you are a horny trucker it gets old day after day.

Conan is the best of the Late night Hosts. Kilborne isnt bad himself, if you want to see a HORRIBLE HOST watch Last Call with Carson Daily, he is horrible at interviewing people, his jokes sound like rejected Conan jokes, and he always seems lost on stage.

Hey, for those who happened to catch "Late Night With Conan O'Brien" just a few moments ago...in case this has already been mentioned I'm sorry...but Conan did a brief video segment showing his trek with a group of carollers in New Jersey...and at one point he complained about how a lot of their songs were extremely old and tired - and that they needed something new, something more contemporary to make themselves sound hipper.

Cut to a new scene, where Conan cues the carollers in with a "one, two, three, four -" and then out of NOWHERE they all start carolling (quite wonderfully, I thought) to the first verse of "Welcome to the Jungle"!! How completely random, but I was freaking out! It seemed like it worked really well! Right after that it showed them singing the dreidel song with a rabbi they met earlier - which I guess was supposed to be funny also, but I was still recouperating from the effect of a GN'R television reference!

Anyways, for those who caught it, it was hilarious. Just thought you might like to know, in case you were unaware...

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!? :)

By the way, does anyone know why Axl did that whole Crispy Cream thing towards Conan at the MSG show?  Did Conan make fun of Axl or something?

Yes...I believe someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it was right after the '02 VMA's, and on Conan's show they did a segment for "In the Year 2000..." and one of Conan's comments was basically mocking the performance - calling the band "Fatty McGoo & the Guys Who Aren't Slash"...? :'(

Not very nice, clearly, but I'm fairly certain that's where it all came from.

During the MSG show Axl came out with a big box of donuts ( a reference to the Fatty Magoo comment) and asked the audience if Conan was in the crowd so he could share his donuts. Then he started passing them out to the front rows. Funny Shit.

During the MSG show Axl came out with a big box of donuts ( a reference to the Fatty Magoo comment) and asked the audience if Conan was in the crowd so he could share his donuts. Then he started passing them out to the front rows. Funny Shit.

Funnily enough, Conan was indeed in attendance that night.? I'm not sure whether or not Axl actually knew that, but it sounded like he did.

Conan has also cracked other Axl jokes like during the SAT analogy bit...

Bruce Springsteen is to: four hour concerts while the crowd has a blast
Axl Rose is to: four hour riots while he sits on his ass

And he did another one I think with Eminem:

Eminem is to: swept the grammays
Axl Rose is to: swept Denny's

when he had jimmy fallon on he kept talking about the snake dance.. Saying he was now a fat snake.. Jimmy did stick up for axl though

Yeah, Conan said something like "What's going on with this Guns N Roses thing?  It's just Axl Rose!  He could hire Foreigner and still call the band Guns N Roses!"  and Jimmy said something like "well hey it's better than calling it Axl and four dudes".

Conan wasn't the reason the show was funny to start with.  He was a producer for a couple years, but he was only the writer of four shows during the fourth season.  He then left to do his own late night show.  The writing of the Simpsons has declined simply because the show has been around for so long and it's running out of steam.  Hell, the 17th season just started last Sunday.

Conan receives writing credits on only a few episodes, but he had a lot of input on many episodes from Season 4 Season 5.  He left about halfway through the 5th season because he got the Late Night job.  He was on the writing team, and he'd receive scripts for shows that had already been written, and then add stuff and make a few finishing touches.  Usually only one guy receives a writing credit, but the input of many people go into the show.  If you've got the DVDs you should watch the episodes Conan does commentary with the commentary on.  You learn a lot of really interesting stuff.  The Simpsons of course were funny before Conan got there and after Conan left, but he did a damn good job when he was with the show.  The 4th and 5th seasons were two of the best in the show's history, and Conan had a lot to do with it.  Its sad to see how far that show has fallen.  IMO it was the funniest show of all time during its prime.

Conan introduced a piece by saying they weren't going to waste anybody time by engaging in stupid bits, then turned and said, "right, oscillating air conditioner that looks like Slash?"

And then it cut to an oscillating AC with the hair and top hat, with a cigarette sticking out of it.  And the beginning of "Sweet Child o Mine" played during the shot.

Great post, Conan's hilarious.  He's on too late at night, and I'm too cheap to get TiVo.  :(
What year will Conan take over for Leno?  Leno's a one-trick pony.  His monologue is great because he's a stand-up comic.  His interviews have always sucked.

Conan's show will be a must-watch once the Chinese Democracy news hits!  I can't wait.  He will have at least a joke or two per night about the guy I think he secretly respects and admires...one W. Axl Rose.   : ok:

Why would Conan take over Jay? Jay's great, I love the tonight show. Conan is hilarious too, especially when he has good guests. The interview with Jim Carey last year was exceptional.

Because Jay Leno is retiring in 2009.  Conan was named by NBC to be his replacement, and Jay Leno fully supported that decision.

jay is supposedly retiring in 2008 or 2009, and then conan is going to take his spot. i think they annonced it earlier this year or during the hoilday season last year

Maybe he should replace Buckethead...  :hihi:

they had another small gnr reference tonight.

they saluted the guy who played the wookie in star wars because he became an american citizen, so they introduced their newest character, american wookie, and he came out with one of those beer hats with the tubes and a appetite era gnr shirt on

Another GNR reference was on the radio a few days ago when Howard Stern and his crew were waiting for AC/DC to get into the studio.  Artie was screeching "For Those about to Rock," and they were pretending they were an AC/DC cover-band...anywhoo, someone made a comment on how singing like that can be tough night in night out, and Artie just said they could pull a Guns N' ROses and cancel due to the singer having thrOat problems.  He wasn't being complimentary, but a mention IS a mention.  I capped the O's because he stressed tose syllables a little bit in a mocking fashion.  Just like Conan though, it's all meant in fun.  I still think either Conan or Howard would make great interviews for our enigmatic and very reclusive lead singer.   :peace:

Conan had a sketch about how Nascar fans are fascinated with things that go round and round in circles and had a flying racoon, and then went to the oscilating fan with a wig and top hat while SCOM intro played

Just to let you all know--last wk (of Oct 05), Conan (late night talk show host in U.S.A.) was mentioning that Chewbaca (from Star Wars--the 7 foot monster-type thing) became a U.S. citizen.  Then you see Chew. walk out on stage, with a beer drinking cap on (where you put two cans of beer on your head and drink them via a plastic straw), and wearing a GNR top with "wttj" playing in the background.  I guess that a typical American: beer gusslin', gn'r listenin kinda guy!  yeaaah!

He is just bitter.? Conan is not even funny.? Btw from what I heard, the metallica movie makes the band look like pussies.

You know...if you have a night to just kick back, Some Kind of Monster is a really interesting introspective. I think its cool they dropped their guards for the camera's like that and gave in to the experience. Its honest. They don't have to be characters doing parodies of themselves. Its one of the better documentaries I have ever seen.

And just think about what exactly is being covered in this. Its a great story and perfectly captures this moment in time. Its honest. I think it makes Metallica stronger because of it. Most bands are too pussy to let us inside like that .

It's late night TV. They "insult" everybody. It's what they do. It's comedy. If we were to take comedians and their material seriously, a lot of comedians would be accused of being racists, bigots, junkies, homophobes etc. etc. It's all in good fun.
