Just to let you guys know...WAAF has played this song 4 times already. ?5 PM will be the 5th time.....and from what I hear it is getting massive requests. ?WAAF is one of the country's best hard rock stations. ?Anyone in or near Boston will tell you. ?The feedback there has been mostly positive. ?My brother-in-law has been listening to WAAf all day and just told me that the most common s\comment has been "the song just grows on you".

The DJ said its new Axl, not GN'R.

It wasn't planned. The radio leaks were started by us, the forum posters.. Afterall.. Stern got it from someone and a hell of a lot of people e-mailed it to their local stations

I agree. If the leak wasn't intentional, merck 'n co were probably at first nervous and trying to put a stop to it spreading, but once the reaction was positive they must have figured it was actually resulting in some very positive PR and decided to ride the wave...

Mistriss Carrie is the WAAF DJ, she is also the music director of the station, so she has plenty of leeway with what she plays.

It'll most likely be going into rotation on 97 Rock in Davenport, IA.  The music director there is the other biggest GNR fan in town, and I Hear he's got his hands on it now!

He says it'll be kinda cool to get a cease and desist from GNR, so I think that means he's gonna play it.

That's true. Also, in '02, after the Boston show, they would only let negative callers call the show, although most at the fleetcenter went apeshit and had a good time.

Apart from that, AAF sucks. For the last 8 years or so, it has been nothing but nu-metal sludge and post-grunge pap. They play crap like STAIND, Godsmack, Creed, Limpbizkit, and powerman 500, real forgettable shit.

Since when are you so negative?  WAAF would only be doing this if they had permission, they are a very powerful radio station and have givin many artists thier big break.

If there's nothing happening? I guess we will just wait another 4 years or whatever to hear another new track. I think it wouldn't be a wise move not to release the album in the first half of 2006 after all this hype, but then again, I was certain the album was coming out in...2001.

Who gets the blame? A band that only released one official song in 12 years. I'm not saying that blame is deserved, but it would be really easy to please everyone. It's pretty easy to guess they have great material on their hands. A good move would be to release just one single, even if the album doesn't come out before a few months.

I don't think anyone should blame the fans. I don't think anyone should blame the band. But there's a solution to all these issues. Release the album. If not the album, just anything. We all know there is great material out there.

It's nice to see GnR on people's mind again. If IRS can get this much hype, and it is supposed to be a mid to lower level rocker, then the homeruns on this album promise to be incredible.

Let the radio stations promote Axl and the new guys in a positive light for once. Let it be.

Don't know it this has been mentioned, but they actually has I.R.S as a download on their site to let everyone judge if they like it or not. Now, I know that we shouldn't talk about links to the leaks and so on, but this time it's a radio station that let people download the song. They are really pushing this to the edge. If they don't get a letter from management after this, then something really is going on...

The fact that this has played uncontested on a major ROck Station in one of the top 5 markets in the USA, to me, means that this leak was orchestrated.

They have been very quick to send out C&D notices in the past..... Trunk, even Latigo got a C&D....... but major Radio Stations are being allowed to run free with this demo...I can't see how this is anything but Axl testing the waters.

Maybe Boston's getting special treatment because of the excellent reception we gave Axl at the Fleet Center Dec. 2nd, 2002.  We had to be the loudest audience of the tour!   8)

Here's my theory. IRS is the unofficial first single off Chinese Democracy. There is no way they would allow this to be played on the radio every hour unless something was happening. There's a 320 bit version of TWAT that someone posted here floating around.  But I don't really think TWAT needs to be played on the radio.  IRS is a different thing because it's been out there for a while and originally leaked over two years ago.  TWAT's a brilliant song even in unfinished form, but it strikes me as a song that will gain a lot when it's fully finished and mixed.  I don't think IRS is going to get much better

When "IRS" is played on WAAF, I have to turn the volume up in order to match the volume of other songs played on the station, at which point there's pops and static.

im not going to get into an audio debate with you but the fm bit rate is less then 128kbs it is actuall 64kbs so 128 would be more then enough to play over the air waves.. im sort of an audiophile you could say in fact its my life

FM bitrates actually vary between 64 kbps and 96 kbps.

True! The quality of a standard FM radio is very low! So many radio stations in the country are still analog, very few stations are 100% digital. If radio was to go to the "HD" era, it will take a very long time before stations start broadcasting in HD and it is for the fact will cost a ton of money to convert the station to digital. Plus another side not stations running automation are either a sat. feed,(not the best quality) or running music off of a harddrive and most songs are not even ripped at 192 because of the size of harddrives.

They must - I live in Boston and OMG never got this kind of air play - i'll be honest, I only heard them play it once.  I have already heard I.R.S at least 5 times

It will be interesting to see what other stations are playing IRS. The Radio and Records Top 50 will be posted Wednesday night so we should know if it has gotten any major adds to other stations arcross the US.

IRS is still #5 on WAAF's "top 10" list of played tracks.  It looks like they haven't played it since 12:56 AM, however, they've only played like 4 or 5 songs an hour since then?  (and in one hour, only one song?) - i'm guessing maybe they do some syndicated programming or PSA type programming at that time?

(Because, usually, there's about 12-15 songs played per hour)

I talked to a lawyer friend of mine last night and actually asked him about this.? I gave him the "hypothetical" particulars of the situation, from top to bottom, and said he knows how HE'D defend the radio station on the C&D side.

Purely his suppostion, based on what we know, of course.? And, of course, we don't know everything.

IF Axl's lawyers sent a C&D to a radio station, the station could ask for proof of copyright...and continue to use the material until Axl's lawyers could provide one.? It's not a GREAT legal leg to stand on, but it would work. At this point, the copyright isn't something in the public domain.? I'm sure there is documenation sitting on some laywers desk somewhere which can prove the copyright on it exists, but, at this point, there is no "album" out there that is definitive proof that Axl and GnR have published, or plan to publish, the material. There is only the C&D's insistance that they will.? In MOST cases, anyone getting a C&D letter in this case would just hold off and wait.? But, the truth is, they don't HAVE to.? At least not according to my friend.? They CAN ask for either some sort of proof, or a hearing to obtain that proof, and ignore the C&D until such time as the proof is provided to them.? So, assuming some stations are actually thumbing their nose at the C&D, this could be why.? The station(s) are going to argue fair use until someone can prove to them otherwise...

Of course, it could be that they haven't gotten them, either, as dark suggests.

One interesting thing.  The two times i've actually heard the song intro'ed they say something like 'Well, we think its Guns n' Roses anyway" "maybe this is Guns n' Roses, maybe it isn't - but this is going to be on Chinese Democracy"

It seems like they're leaving themselves a bit of legal wiggle room on the Guns n' Roses thing - however, their player clearly shows it as Guns n' Roses - I.R.S.

One thing i'll repest from what i said in another thread-  yesterday ( around 530 PM) i called WAAF and actually asked them about a C & D-and they didnt know anything about it- in fact the guy asked me if i was supposed to be the one delivering the message (i dont know if he was joking or not, but I assured him I wasnt and was just trying to clear up confusion on an internet rumor), and he said to me if they got one would "they would certainly comply with it".

now it could be it ( the C&D) came thru on the fax machine this morning or it could be they are repeating the rumor i and probably several others called in and asked about to help promote themselves as some sort of' fuck the management we're rebels!' type gimmick, all the while doing exactly what management wants.

i dont doubt that its possible they would have gotten it and still played it while waiting for proof of copyright-but in my experience most radio station folks are cowards (note not ALL) who will cave to pressure from artists/upper management/etc. because they dont want to have to even think about fighting lawsuits.

Well if the C&D came through the fax machine, they seemed ok with still playing the song at 8:55 AM this morning.  :)

I've said the radio stations are within their rights to "play dumb" after receiving a C&D, and can ask copies of the actual legal docs showing a copyright exists....because, as yet, there is nothing in the public domain that would show that copyright.

I checked.  While the copyright does exist at authorship, it is generally considered good legal precedent to Register the Copyright with the LOC (in the US) because it provides you with increased legal protection against and for suits to defend the copyright.

As someone who's actually heard them play IRS three times now (over the stream, anyway) I can say that, it actually sounds 'smoother' when they play it when I do off of a CD.  I'm guessing the compression has helped take some of the shrillnesss away fom the track.

He got audited.  He really didn't pay his taxes.  He's now doing a stretch (a year, I think..maybe a bit more) for felony tax evasion.

I have a feeling the cease and desist letter probably hinted that a proper single would be shipped to radio soon. The IRS track is great buzz for GnR, but they don't want a demo quality recording to be aired as "new music from GnR" with the caveat that it is, indeed, a demo.

I am an employee at a big radio station in KC.  Not going to mention the name, however we just added IRS and TWAT to our playlists.  My boss thinks they're good and we are going to play them until we get C and D orders.

Has anyone heard this song on any other stations?? My friend told me he heard it on WMMR (Philadelphia) on Saturday night.? He said that he liked it but the DJ and people calling in were bashing it, saying it sucked.?

Just to note:? WMMR stopped playing GnR for a few weeks (maybe a month?) right after Axl didnt show for the concert in 2002 ( :'( i was there, i wish he was too).? They actually were promoting a ban on GnR for that time period.? But then they went right back to playing them every day after the ban.? WMMR is the best rock station in the greater philadelphia area.?

Their only competator is WYSP, but they are clear channel and used to play stern and now they play David Lee Roth.? Most of the day they are just talk shows.

Haven't played them yet.  They were added to our system like five minutes ago.  I'm on the air now and I'm begging my PD to let me play them, but it probably won't happen till tonite or tomorrow.  Unfortunately that's corporate radio.

I don't get the play IRS but not TWAT deal. A lot of people agree TWAT is a lot better than IRS. Even if it would be a "good idea" or whatever to hold onto TWAT, it doesn't really show people what the new band can do, in my opinion.

If those are the final two mixes of IRS and TWAT, I will be HIGHLY HIGHLY disappointed in the album. There are huge obvious flaws in the production-lack of drums-Axl's voice buried in spots-some blatantly out of tune guitar playing at the beginning of TWAT. Just very poor mixing in general. Management didn't leak this but they must figure the demos are a good taste. At least I hope.

I don't think they are final mixes, at all. 

Anyone else notice that the version of IRS being played on WAAF sounds alot.. cleaner than the one we have?  Food for thought.

Crisis Management...... Merck is letting the radio stations play the song because he knows that if he tells them to stop it the ball will stop rolling. Unfortunatly these leaked tracks seem to have forced the camp into accelerating the release process.

I went to Vegas this weekend and i must have heard IRS about 20 times there and back, on various different radio stations. The first time i heard it was when setting of from San Diego and to be honest it sounded shit on the radio, the MP3 compression really hurt the song! Saying that though the response the song got was amazing, out of 100 people who phoned in there were only 2 people who said they didnt like it one of them purely because everyone else liked it, so basically the reaction to the song was very very positive. The one thing that did piss me off though, and this was a common among all the stations we tuned in to on the 6 hour trip. Every fucking station referred to this as "the new Guns n Roses single". Obviously the people who emailed the song in didnt bother to put forward the point that this is a 3 year old Demo, shame! I just hope it doesnt put casual listeners off!

So true, the closest we have used to be Triple M, but it sux hard now. But wsfm is a good station for old school rock on the weekend but weekdays its not to good.
I tuned in online to wmmr with Alice Cooper and the music played on that staion kicks the shit outta ours in Australia, they played Metallica's Dyers Eve. One of their heaviest.

I don't think that the reactions WAAF is playing is necessarily representative of the entire listening population.  First and foremost, they're going to play negative reactions more because people get off on ripping others.  It also gives people an opportunity to be creative when they rip someone or something else.  It's just the nature of our society and media.  Saturated with negativity.

Plus, it's just fashionable, and it has been for some time, to bash Axl Rose.  Not that it's justified, but that's just the way it is.

Yeah - a 128 kbs MP3 does indeed sound like shit over the radio.

I cannot believe anyone sent that song to the radio.? That is exactly what some of these folks wanted, an unfinished experiment they could rip.

Start calling, and telling them to play IRS instead.? IRS was allowed to be spun for a reason.? This could be as counterproductive as the MTV performance.  Let mgt. decide what is allowed or not.  IRS was, TWAT is NOT DONE.

I have been saying the last few day's TWAT was very rough and should not have been leaked.....everyone else said NOO- it is the greatest song in the world... open your ears...the vocals on the pre-chorus are messed up......... I agree.  There's also plenty of people out there who are waiting to bash Axl at any chance they get, they live for negativity and the chance to complain about something.  Many of these people will buy the album anyway, just so they can complain about it.  You're not going to please everyone, and we haven't heard a finished version of the song anyway.  That version we heard song was recorded at least 3 years ago probably more

The  version playing on WAAF is from 1999. Buckthead is not even on the track.

Reaction to TWAT is fairly predictable, UYI/Axl type fans will love it while AFD era fans may not.

I'm not sure it's a song that will bring many new fans around, at least not this demo version.

WAAF has a good playlist, less the random Quiet Riot, Twisted Sister and whatnot. ?I could do without 20 Pink Floyd spins a day as well. ?

Sadly almost every rock station in the USA thinks that playing Floyd and Zep 20 times a day each is what the public needs..........

One of the guys that called in and complained said that any GN'R song over 7 minutes sucks -> which is basically the AFD-only fan mentality. ?If someone wanted AFD, they're going to be disappointed because it seems like CD is following from where UYI left off.

EDIT: I'd much rather them play Floyd or Zep then Fallout Boy, Nickelback or any other crap that most stations play.

I don't think it's the demo aspect of it. Even for me it took quite a few listens to really get into the song. Not to mention they're not airing the 6:43 version, which is better I think.

And don't blame people for sending TWAT to radios. I mean, those links are on any fan site/ forum (except HTGTH). Anyone one could get them on the internet, torrents, P2P, etc. Don't blame the fans.

If the Album is going to be much better than these songs  than I'm actually glad  that these songs got out  and people are bashing it.  It's going to make all these people that are calling the station  look stupid .  Not a bad strategy  when you think about it .  Make people think you suck  and you're done    then hit them with the big surprise !

I love this song. I think it is getting unfair reviews because people know that it isnt the old band and can't listen to it with an open mind. I know he is trying different things but you can tell that the emphasis is still on soaring solos and vocal melodies. I just heard you talk about the Beatles being your favorite band and I think you can kind of compare it to them. The Beatles were such an evolution of music. They started out very simple and then in their later years, began experimenting with new effects and layers that created for some truly quality music. Nobody bashes the Beatles for this, but everyone loves to hate Axl. How fair is that? I know the guy probably should not be using the name, and that Guns N' Roses never was the Beatles by any comparison, but at least give the man an open listen and an honest opinion!

In other news:  Listen to the last part of the song - it has a Tommy Stinson influence to it, it's the part where they sing "there was I time, I thought I knew it all" in the background. it sounds like a song from Village gorilla head.  I loved that album as well :-)

The problem is that TWAT, in its current state as we know it, just isn't that good.  It definately begs the question "Is that what took 13 years".  It is most definately demo quality and won't sound remotely like this on th ealbum, but casual listeners don't know that.

Feedback I have heard regarding TWAT was atrocious!  Let's see what happens.

I really don't think it's fair or ethical for the radio to play TWAT without stressing that it's an unfinished demo.  What I love about TWAT is the lyrics and the concept, but we're talking about a demo that was recorded years back that many people are mistaking for a finalized version of the song that will be on the album.  With IRS, even if it's a demo it still sounds pretty close to finished even if the mixing isn't that great

I agree 100%. A mediocre beginning ruins an otherwise great song. The last 4 minutes are awesome, but unlike superfans on this board, most people won't listen to it 30 times until they like the song. Alot of people give a song a minute or 2 in the car and flip the channel if they don't like the song.

If I only listened to the first 2 minutes and flipped I would think the song sucks too. Which is why I am hoping the song is seriously reworked before it hits an album.

Same goes for IRS for that matter, the first minute is wierd, and the rest of the song is pretty strong. If New GNR could find a way to beef up the intros people wouldn't have to listen to a song 10 times to like it as the last 4-5 minutes of the new songs have been pretty good.

In terms of the fan reaction, it shouldn't really be that surprising. The positiveness of the reaction is proportional to the sound quality of the track. IrS and Better sound complete; on the radio TWAT sounds like it is playing underwater.

Wait until the album drops, TWAT will surpass this initial response.

I certainly hope you're right.  I think it will be better on the final record.  Demos are just that, demos.  God knows how old it is, too.

For all the motherfuckers complainin about mediocre reception, here are some non fan opinions, lots of them and almost all positive, so there is nothing to worry about, these songs are getting positive feedbacks from all around the world, there is almost every music or news related site writing about leaking, so its all cool, it will be a major news once it will be annouced, i am a regular since 98 and there has never been so much buzz... everywhere

It says that they have asked for all links to be removed because they are a copyright infingement and that anyone not complying will be procescuted. ?Notice it says nothing at all about the songs being played on the radio. ?

I know I ?am just a pee on emailing them but they have to know that I could post/report this so perhaps they didnt mention the radio stations and just the links because they dont care about the songs, or at least IRS, being on the radio. ?

I'm not too worried about this. Merck knew about this for days, because it's been going on for days. How many times has IRS been played on the radio lately? 15, 20 times? more? They could've stopped it almost immediately, had they really wanted to.

I remember when they denied the first new years gig. Axl even denied it to Kurt Loader when everyone knew it was happening. I take everything they say with a grain of salt...

KROQ in LA played IRS today! ?During the evening rush hour. ?The DJ claimed to be only the second one in the nation to play it.

He left it for the next DJ who said she wants to play it too and that she digs everything axl.

They explained it was found floating around the internet but not that it was a low quality demo. ? I hate that people are hearing low quality IRS instead of a finished version of TWAT or BETTER.

My guess is the Djs are selectively screening the callers they put on the air.

IRS really grows on one.  There is no doubt, that this was meant as a teaser.   The flamenco guitar intro, the way the guitars and Axl's voice are like razors from 1:05 to 1:30, and the last minute with the blood curtling scream!!

I agree with Minneapolisnewsman, IRS gets better every time I hear it.  It rocks hard, the Buckethead solo is short but very cool, I only wish I could hear Axl's vocals more clearly in the mix that was leaked

Here is the thing about the TWAT bashing on WAAF. ?Yes a lot of callers bashed it and said how much it sucked. One of the callers said they should stop playing it but the DJ replied to we cant since we are getting tons of requests for the song to be played. ?When ever a song sucks people will call to rip it but when its good people just request it. Who calls a radio station to praise a new song? No one, they call or email to hear it again.

If you are just a casual fan expecting "Nightrain," I can see why you wouldn't dig TWAT--It is different for GN'R. A lot of those chowder-heads bashing TWAT are too immature and lack the sophistication to appreciate Axl's true artistic vision.

It is more common for people to complain about anything (no matter what the biz is) then praise it. Rarely does a business owner get letters of praise for his/her workers. But they sure as hell will get complaints all day long.

It is human nature.

Also, the bad calls spark the pro-Guns crowd and then you flood them with calls and emails.

If they just gave GNR praise, that would not spark the anti-Axl crowd. That crowd would just shrug their shoulders and turn the dial.

Thats when I first GNR, out in cali in summer 0f 87, the kept playing SCOM, and took me like the entire 2 weeks I was there, to finaly find out who the hell was singing , what band was this? My very last day, on the airplane taxing. to take off back to NY had the station on my walkman, and thank god the DJ, anounced theband name as the intro started. Been a changed man ever sincce, Saw thier first east coast perfomance a few months later ar Sundance, in Bayshore LI. Never got off this nightrain, for almost 20 yrs now.

I didnt start to feel giddy about this whole thing until I heard it on my car radio.  And I dont even listen to KROQ that often.  All of a sudden, it felt REAL to me.  Not just my GNR internet fixation.

Btw, I did notice last night while I was recording TWAT on WAAF that it sounded better than the MP3s we have, even though it was an internet broadcast, and the DJ said it lasted 5:48 (both MP3 leaks last more than 6 minutes). How weird is that? I didn't keep it because I thought I could re-record it properly. Guess I was wrong. :(

Exactly, last time it was a leak coming from a cd, not an mp3 leak that everybody has.

I just called a small, local rock station here in southern Delaware (93.5 The Beach) actually they transmit out of Salisbury, MD.  I asked them if they've played the leaked demo tracks...answer, yes, he said they played a snippet.  I asked him what he personally thought, and he said he liked one of them, but didn't have the name.  He said he'd be pulling hard for Axl, but it's not easy, "The guy just seems to shoot himself in the foot every time..."  His words, unfortunately true.  He asked me who's in the band so I told him, and then he asked if Bucket's still there or back.  I told him as of now, he left, but the live gigs in May and June is a mystery which just adds more intrigue to the return of Axl and Guns.  I finished with a request for IRS, and they said they'd do it later, at least part of it.

I should have asked him for the rules on playing leaked demo tracks, but hindsight's always 20-20.  :yes:

I believe Better to be one of the "pop" tunes Axl & co. spoke of during the 2002 tour.


Because of the quality of IRS I thought that was the single but I now believe "Better" will make for a lunching type single to make GN'R a favorite amongst the younger fans who seem to be supporting the industry these days.

With the songs we know of.......Blues, Mads, CD, IRS, Better & TWAT......the cd will be a huge seller.

Radio station prolly have filters to run the songs thru? that's my guess, cuz when IRS was played at my local station it was clearer than the copy I listen too. But they got the file online so it must be the same one we got.

There is "dead air" at the beginnings and ends of the TWAT mp3's so maybe they clipped that off the tracks? Again just a guess

They can ask the radio to stop, in legal terms they "claim" this is their property at this stage.
The radio station can ask for legal papers that shows GunsN'Roses can decide how that track is used.

And maybe they didn't have that specific type of legal papers set as this is a demo...-
- and had to request and await for legal documents that gives them the authority to stop radio channels playing those demo's.

Demo's is rarely copyrighted that way and often end up as bootlegs which is legal to download and share.

94.1 HJY in providence is playing TWAT.  They sound pretty excited about it!  They also comnfirmed that GNR will be playing Rio, and different festivals this summer.  But most important, they mentioned this website as "THE WEBSITE".
