Title: Please Drop Patience
Post by: Top-Hatted One on May 17, 2006, 09:35:14 AM
Not enough energy in the new version. I've seen the new band 3 times now and every time the crowd just falls asleep. Now if they want to do the 1st half acoustically I think it would be great!

no. beautiful song, all-time classic.
people wanna hear it live again after all this time, not everyone listens to old bootlegs every day.

I have to agree. ?Of all the boots I have of the new band doing this song, I don't have one that has any emotion. ?The band just doesn't seem that interested.

I'm not a fan of the new version but I have accepted the fact that it'll stay...its a huge hit and what the song represents is very important. For those that don't know it was written two calm the crowd down when they got 2 rowdy and after those 2 kids died (in Donnington I beleive in '88) it became a staple in the set....so top-hatted one it still seems to work til this day.

The Show @ Donnington will be a very special performance of this song i think :'( :)

Keep in mind that patience was never a song that had alot of energy.  It's a slow song, so you can't expect the band to be into it like they would nighttrain or paradise city.

Title: Re: Please Drop Patience
Post by: god of thunder on May 17, 2006, 10:07:10 AM
I also do not like so much the new versions of Patience and KOHD, but they will always stay alltime classics. Personally I would think it was very sad if they only played Appetite and new songs.

Maybe they should really go back to the old versions. Nontheless when I saw the band play Patience in 2002 the crowd went fuckin insane and kept on cheering for like 5 minutes when the song ended.

It's a slow song? ::)

The original gang put a bit more feel into it.? Look at the old boots.?

It's not an issue with me though.? I think the new group does a good job with it.? I just don't think they approach it the way the old band did.? The new guys are itching to play their own stuff.? And I understand that completely.

about LALD i always hated it. live and studio. i just dont like the song.

Don't Cry would be nice. can you believe out of the 20 songs they only play 4 illusion songs! i don't know why they don't give UYI more respect

Title: Re: Please Drop Patience

I agree with that.

For a lot of fans the show would have more of a true GN'R feel to it with more UYI material.

Civil War, Breakdown, Dust N' Bones, Double Talkin' Jive, Estranged - good stuff.

Post by: Dont Try Me on May 17, 2006, 11:26:26 AM
For those who say they should only play more new songs are forgetting that the album ain't out. You might not get the response you hope for as an artist when you play allot more new songs without the album beeing sinked in to the masses. Seriously, you don't want that. A song is much cooler when there's history to it, or at least an album version which we all love. The reception will always be better afterwards.

Secondly, I love to hear patience. You know why? I never ever ever ever saw the band. I never have seen Axl perform and I seriously would love to hear the old songs. It would be so fucking special to me. Please don't drop it. There are allot more people like me who would love to hear Axl perform classics.

The new songs will do fine once the album is released ya know. Then those new songs will be / or could be; considered as classics, sorts. Ofcourse, the die-hard fans know TWAT, IRS, Better and the like. But if they'd play more new songs without the album beeing released the'd kill the 'atmosphere' in a show. Not cause the songs ain't good enough, they are great. But simple cause people need songs to sink in. To find a place for it's lyrics, melodies. Getting used to it, relating.

*sigh*

anyways, rock on all. Very happy times for all Guns fans! Be happy with what you get. Cause well.......He could pull the plug anytime we all know.

US? Speak for yourself idiot, i don't give a fuck about CD songs until the album is released and has been judged accordingly. You newbie fans need to show some respect for the proven classics, including PATIENCE, that sound as fresh today as they did 15-20 years ago. THAT is the mark of a great song. How can the band members be tired of playing "other peoples songs" when they 1. Never played the studio versions in the first place and 2. Have only had to play them live about a dozen (if that) times so far. ?

In that case it shows that this new bunch can't do justice to some of the old material by fucking around with it. I'm yet to see anyone say they like the new bands version of YCBM and now we can add Patience to the list as well then... I'd love to see them butcher Estranged again like in '92. No one can match Slash's amazing guitar work on that seminal classic.  : ok:

i would like to see some more variation in the setlist, but you can't not play patience.

exactly...its too big not to be there..though i agree, maybe tinkering the arrangement might make it more of a crowd pleaser, if it's not now (in 2002 in Boston people loved it).

as for them apparently not doing more UYI songs, the interview with eddie trunk indicates to me that axl has somewhat of a sour feeling towards those albums now, maybe to the point where he just has no interest in playing em'.

I love this song, I don't care what version, arrangement or whatever they do as long as they do the song on the 7th.

i can't believe the band members aren't getting tired of playing other's people songs.
they should go on strike and force axl to let 'em play songs they worked on ...

anyway.
it's all good to us.
as long as they play madagascar/better it's fine with me

i'm not gonna answer on the noob thing [ thanks 2na ;) ]
and i think they played these "classics" songs like thousands time.

again 2na is right about variety, but i saw the show 2 nights in a ROW and it still did it for me.
the craziness is still there.

also, what could kick ass, if they have like 300 songs for CD, why not throw a couple of silly unreleased trakcs or so that WONT be on cd, that'd be cool.

Speaking of dropping songs, they should drop my michelle, and for some shows drop LALD and Knockin', plus it seems like they have dropped think about you, which is good.  Eventually they should drop a lot of the older songs and maybe put them back in the set just occasionally.  I even think they should drop Out ta get me sometimes? and even some of the bigger hits shouldn't be played at every show.
Patience is too big to drop I think and plus its like the theme song for the making of Chinese Democracy!

Leeds 2002 was the only good live version i've seen this band do of patience (albeit a bootleg) the studio version is a masterpiece, but I think its too outdated, I'd love to see them play one in a million instead, just once, itd rock

again the issue is not that people don't like the song but that people don't like the current version. the audience is bored

Aside from one or two of the signature classics, I was not enthralled by the old songs. Nothing against the new band, but I wanted to hear the new stuff. At this point, I see this band as the producers of TWAT, CITR, CD, Madagascar, et al. and not the band that plays NR, PC, WTTJ...

I think by the fall it will happen... I can't wait until we get a set with 9 new songs, 9 old... would be the perfect blend.

Even though I love Patience, but I personally would like them to drop patience and fill Madagascar in its place from now on.

People are saying how Patience is a buzzkill and what not, and then theres people saying madagascar kills momentum.
so replace patience with a new song being Madagascar.

You can't take Patience out it's a signature GNR tune like Jungle or SCOM.?

? ?If I recall Estranged and Coma are very very hard to play live so maybe Axl doesn't think they are ready to pull out songs like that yet.

Haha, there's some real dumb fucks out there i swear! NO band with as much classic material as Guns is gonna play NINE songs off one new disc, that's ludicrous. Add in the fact that this line up isn't good enough to pull off Estranged, Coma or Civil War with the same integrity and soul as the AFD or UYI line ups and you can punt these pipe dreams into touch. Next!  ;D

The old songs might not happen... but by the fall, we'll get 9 songs from the new disc, for certain. Whether or not the new band can pull off the old tunes can be debated until the world stops turning.

I was never a huge fan of Patience live whether it was the original band or new band.

I dont know, they just always seem to fuck it up live.

I am still holding out for some UYI material.

I have no clue why they dont divulge deep into the catalog.

robin shouldn't do the solo he does, its the same one from 02...he should do the album version or something in G major, like Slash did during the 90s tour....

I read a setlist on here where people said Coma, Locomotive and Estranged should be added.

Honestly, for us that would be awesome.  However, for the average fan, those 3 songs PLUS November Rain total almost 40 minutes!  Not sure the casual listener would be too pleased with that.

I like 'Patience'. Although, I don't know how it's played and what the atmosphere's like--I haven't been to any shows. To be honest, I really don't mind what they play--this is G N' R and they're touring for the first time in 4 years...I'd be happy with whatever : ok:

Yea, wouldnt bother me if they trimmed out the current UYI stuff (except You Could Be Mine).

Its funny how a lot of us want more UYI stuff but dont want whats being played currently.

new band or old band patience is always boring, its good for an unplugged show but not for a rocking show, lald was never my cup of tea either, simply not enough lyrics in that song
