Title: Longest stay on the Billboard 200 since 1999
Post by: IndiannaRose on June 08, 2006, 12:14:02 AM
Since the time Billboard introduced the catalog chart, albums have been moved to the catalog chart if the album has been on the chart more than 2 years.

This is the list of albums since 1999 that have remained on the Billboard 200 longer than 104 weeks (Guns N' Roses is at 134 weeks through this week):

151 COME ON OVER SHANIA TWAIN
148 COME AWAY WITH ME NORAH JONES
141* GREATEST HITS GUNS N' ROSES
134 WIDE OPEN SPACES DIXIE CHICKS
133 BACKSTREET BOYS BACKSTREET BOYS
118 YOURSELF OR SOMEONE LIKE YOU MATCHBOX 20
112 MY OWN PRISON CREED
111 GOLDEN ROAD KEITH URBAN
110 5 LENNY KRAVITZ
109 'N SYNC 'N SYNC
108 SURFACING SARAH MCLACHLAN
108 SONGS ABOUT JANE MAROON 5
105 ELEPHUNK BLACK EYED PEAS
105 THE BEAUTIFUL LETDOWN SWITCHFOOT

Right now, "Guns N' Roses: Greatest Hits" has been the 3rd album with most longevity on the Billboard Top 200 chart since the end of the 20th Century. It will pass #2 in due time. We'll see how it goes from there.

That is simply testament to the timelessness and greatness of Guns N Roses.  Plain and simple!!!

That list is fucking shit other than GnR. We live in a time of awful music for the most part.

Not bad for a band that some(not me) regard as irrelavent now days.
No one could match them in the late 80's, early 90's and still no one can match them today.
GN'R are the best fuck the rest

I see this album going to the top of that chart. The GNR comeback has REALLY begun this time!

the surprising thing is, those other albums have sold far more

imagine if it had been marketed properly?

I doubt that it would've helped that much.

With almost no marketing, the Guns record still sells well, since people are still "finding" it. And by finding I don't mean like actually only now noticing that oh my god, they have a GH cd, but that they might've bought a more hyped album back then, and are only now buying the GH. If it woul've been marketed a lot, it might be that it would'nt have been on the charts this long, although the sales figures in total would've been pretty much the same.

It's worth buying for the SFTD cover, which I think is really cool. Fuck Stephen Thomas Erphawine.

Up there with the likes of The Black Eyed Peas, Keith Urban, Creed, NSYNC, The Dixie Chicks, Matchbox 20 ....

Man, popular music is in some rough days.

At least there is one good album there. (possibly 2, I have no idea who Switchfoot are)

Congrats to GN'R, Geffen, and Interscope.

The fact that the rest of the albums on that list are crap shows that GNR are so important to rock n roll.

Chinese Democracy will break the sales, you'll see it. This record will be huge.

It's cool and all that people are still buying this, though I doubt anyone out of the hardcore collectors set of fans and people who have good memories to go along with the songs are buying it. I'm not buying it myself however. I have all the songs over all the albums and singles. Unless something spectacular comes along, CD is the next GnR album I'll be buying.

I feel weird for liking some of those other albums that are on the longevity chart. I was just listening to "Yourself or Someone Like You" earlier today. Was listening to the Maroon 5 album last week. I have the Black Eyed Peas album. The Lenny Kravitz album, too. Surely you guys think Lenny is cool. Slash has played with him before.

I bought it, but almost entirely for collection purposes.

I bought it as part of a gift, as my mother didn't have any of their albums.

I downloaded SFTD on itunes, along with Oh My God, and bought the albums a long time ago.

Anyone know or have any ideas as to why Live Era did so poorly?  I would think people would have been dying for a live GNR double disc.  I know some hard core fans have issues with it, but to the avg. person its a totally awesome cd.

Hmmm...it has sold approximately 729,371 copies in the U.S. When referring to the sales of double albums the RIAA doubles that tally (because there are 2 albums in the package). So, technically the album is at the 1,458,742 mark. This album should've been certified platinum about 5 years ago. Do you consider that poor?

Most live albums sell like shit and sell under 300,000 units. The live album market is not a hot one. There have only been a few acts to achieve great commercial success with it (Garth Brooks, Bruce Springsteen, Dave Mathews Band, KISS, U2). So, the album has sold pretty well when you look at these components.

Allman Brothers Live at the Fillmore East was their most succesful album I believe...a landmark album but yes, live albums generally don't sell that well unless you are Peter Frampton.

I still need to pick up Greatest Hits.

Why?  The song selection sucks, not close to their BEST stuff and if you have the regular albums, you get one new and BAD song, Sympathy for the Devil..

That's because it's not a Best Of album, it's a Greatest HITS album

Next week, GNR's Greatest Hits will have moved up 5 spots to take # 64 on the Billboard top 200  : ok:

Once the US tour starts, I predict another huge sales spike for the album!

It's a shame that a compilation album is at #1.

Then, AFD should be at #64 instead of GH.

It's a sign Gn'R is gaining popularity again.

the GNR have been on that list for 2 years now.
they never stoped being popular. it's just that people dont have anything new to buy.
everybody who bought the GH will buy the CD, but they need to release it so someone could buy it.

CD will sell no matter when it gets released.

if they release it in 2015 it would sell as well as it would if it was released tomorrow, becase everyone who wants to buy it now would buy it in 2015.

Next week, GNR's Greatest Hits will have moved up 5 spots to take # 64 on the Billboard top 200? : ok:

Once the US tour starts, I predict another huge sales spike for the album!

Yeah man, I'm sure playing to 65,000 people at Inland Invasion will definately help album sales

You guys have to be KIDDING me. Honestly, almost nobody talks about GNR. And they definitly aren't "still popular." It's cool they still sell GH but it hardly means anything. Some people on this board are out of touch.

I think I'll have to agree with you on that, GNR's popularity is way different than how it once was. Even though their Greatest Hits cd is selling well they're not Popular in the sense that they're having top 40 singles and getting any real mainstream success. I think most poeple view them as a thing of the past, which they pretty much are...

They sold 3 million+ of GH. I'd call that mainstream success. You can turn on a classic rock/rock radio station and hear a GNR song every hour - that's pretty mainstream, as well. As a struggling musician with no money, I'd like to say that if that isn't success, then I don't need to be successful.

edit: Regarding the statement that their popularity isn't the same as it was in the early 90's let me say - Duh!

64 GUNS N'ROSES GREATEST HITS 13,195 -1 13,323 3,093,530

An it was about a month ago, the GH is still in the top 100 (128th week !).

One album was heavily promoted and featured NEW songs, the other has been put out against the will of the members (actual and ex) of the band.

One band made tons of records, tours, promotions, video clips for more than 20 years, the other has put out only four real LPs, one EP, one double live album and one compilation. This band has only been active for like 9 years and sold about 85 or 90 millions albums.

I might be alone, but GN?R?s short but awesome carreer impresses me way more than BJ?s one !

yeah, the old band (with SLASH, DUFF, IZZY, GILBY etc...) was one of the most important band in History. It still prooves how legendary they are.
If they reformed, they would be even bigger than U2... we all want it to happen... we all want a reunion... it's THE absolute GN'R dream of every GN'R fan... too bad Axl doesn't want it :-\

Well Jarmo who are you to speak on behalf of the fans telling them what they should want? I'm with nesquick on this one. get CD outta the way and move on to the reunion negotiations. The genreal public would rather have a reunion, half the fans on these boards would rather have a reunion and I'd be willing to bet most peeople in the music industry would rather have a reunion. So in my opinion you're in the minority here Jarmo. Not that, tha's a bad thing. I'm not so sure I'd agree with nesquick about Gn'R being bigger than U2. There's a real good arguement as to who was bigger in the early 90's(I think Gn'R were bigger but it's close) but part of me thinks too much time has past for Gn'R to ever reach those heights again with or without a reunion. It would be awesome though. : ok:

As far as I know, GN'R has never been about pleasing "the general public".

There's plenty of artists out there who've made a career out of pleasing that crowd.

You two can take your reunion daydreams to the Dead Horse section.  : ok:

+1!

I REALLY don't want an artificial reunion only for the fuckin' money (Sex pistols, anyone?)!!!!! I don't care about Velvet revolver (bought and sold the album a few months later, Slash just doesn't do it for me anymore...sorry!) and I love the new band, I hope they'll stay together for at least a few years and two or three albums!

I hope they never reunite myself. I don't believe old GnR could ever recapture the magic they once had, and it would just be a nostalgia thing. GnR was bigger than U2 by the way. U2 has just outlasted every band, and sucked so much industry dick, that they've become the biggest band. If Oasis kissed ass and acted like corporate whores like U2, they would be the biggest band in the world right now. Oh well, after hearing Axl's new material I'm convinced he'll take GnR right back to number one, thank god.

? That is simply testament to the timelessness and greatness of Guns N Roses.? Plain and simple!!!

I love how everyone agrees the rest of the list is crap.....but GNR being on there is a testament to the "greatness of GNR".  Look. I love them too - but it's kind of odd logic.

I think this list is a testament to the timeliness and staying power of boy bands and country music.  Cheers!

I didn't go back and see the list, but I agree with your sentiments. I do know that greatest hits packages sell well no matter what.

I was just reading an article this morning saying that since 2001 Michael Jackson has re-packaged his two-disc HIStory to a one-disc set, released another greatest hits package, released a boxed set, then released another two-disc best of after that. To date the article said they sold somewhere around 3 million copies in the US alone.

If that ain't proof that a GH package will sell no matter what, then nothing is.

Look how many Greatest Hits/Live CDs that Aerosmith and Motley Crue have put out since '93 or so. Both have only recorded 2-3 studio albums, yet put out a Greatest Hits every few years.

I don't even consider GNRs Greatest Hits to be a real CD.
I still haven't bought, it and don't have any intentions on doing so anytime soon.

What are you talking about?  Look at the Billboard Top 100 albums right now... There are only 3 albums that are triple platinum (one of them being Greatest Hits) and Nickelback's CD which went 4 times platinum.  Greatest Hits may not be at the top of the charts, but hundreds of new CDs have debuted ahead of the CD and then disappeared in a matter of weeks.

Now you guys are saying "Well even Michael Jackson can sell a lot of Greatest Hits"... You're making a negative comparison to the biggest selling artist of all time?

I guarantee you if you release a greatest hits CD from a boy band ten years after they last released an album, it won't be as successful as this CD.  I didn't like the idea of releasing it, but as it stands it is one of the best selling albums released that year (probably in the top 10).

I think it could go both ways.  For instance when I was young, I bought doors greatest hits, but then loved it so much I went out and bought every album. At the same time, I remember back before GF was released, AFD would pop into the billboard 200 everyonce in a while, that will most likely never happen again with the GH out there.

the reason for the boost on sells is 'cuz the new gn'r are out touring so you're wrong that it sells good at the moment has something to do with new gnr.. yes new and old band are completely differet doesn't need for a rocket scientist to figure that out.. and that about these guys aint gn'r, that's your opinion wich sholdn't be stated as a fact. ::) : ok:
