Title: Q Magazine - 100 Greatest Songs Ever (Full List inc)
Post by: Melrose Chick on September 08, 2006, 12:27:22 PM
Guns n roses make it into the list? at No 22 with Sweet Child Of Mine

I thought the write up about it was cool so here it is:

SWEET CHILD OF MINE - GUNS N ROSES
The only hair-metal ballad you'll ever need

Even tattooed, foul-mouthed, bandanna-wearing drug monkeys have their sensitive side, and it doesn't get more touching than this.? Single-handedly absolving the power ballad from its multitude of crimes against music, SCOM is an uncharacteristically tender love letter from hot-headed singer Axl Rose to his then girlfriend Erin Everly.? But if the source is unlikely, the execution is faultless, mop-haired guitarist Slash's immortal wailing riff perfectly mirroring the singer's own plaintive, feline howl.? Often imitated but never bettered, it stands as Rose's shining moment and the very pinnacle of '80's hard rock.

Best Bit:? 0.01, the riff that inspired a million air guitarists
You Said: Heavy metal heaven, defines the word 'epic'
Get It: Appetite For Destruction

That paragraph perfectly surmises why there will always be a generation of Guns fans that long to see Axl and Slash on a stage together again. That pairing is in rarified air in terms of lead guitarists/singers that complemented and completed eachother as artists.

Captan obvious to the rescue, m' lady

Nothing wrong with the Oasis rankings. I think "The Drugs Dont Work" is a better song by The Verve than "Bitterswet Symphony"

I got Q this month, Before people start shouting of about oasis having 1 n 2, it's a british mag, so naturally theirs bound to be a brit band on top weather beatles or U2,
an american mag would probably have a different outcome

Everyone knows that Stairway to Heaven should top every list.  :(

Of course, my favorite song ever would have to be either Estranged or Coma, but you can't deny Stairway's prowess.

god there must be some sort of list that GNR is in every week best guitar anthem, song etc etc

must admit there is alot of crap in the lists, how is "smells like teen spirit" better than "bohemian rhapsody" or "stairway to heaven"???

I love Nirvana as much as the next man - but british magasines obsession with Nirvana makes me feel ill - they refuse to mention the existence of non-uk based bands - and yet dedicate half their pages to Nirvana, in every blasted issue - NME and Q could easily be Nirvana fanzines....

Wow, not for nothing but that top 10 list is pretty bad.. And slanted towards British groups.

Well, let's be honest - even if GNR had never existed there would still be several(read: 100's) of bands that make Oasis look pathetic. The notion that their songs are rated over the Beatles, Queen, U2- well, it isn't really worth listing all of them, but you get the point- pretty much invalidates the entire list as far as I'm concerned.

It's only natural a magazine shows big interest in locals.  Seeing joy division at no7 is the utter surreal tho.
How many foreign bands are in the charts in US or in any country?

I love Oasis, there one of my fav bands i just dont think live forever is the greatest song of all time. I dont think GNR should be any were near number one either. I think they should hav had a song like 'A day in the life' or somethin as NO. 1.

It seems the cool thing to bash them now! even if this list has been picked by the Q writers, oasis still top polls when it's just the fans that have voted!

Well, Liam seems to act like an arrogant, and occasionally drunken, ass most of the time, and his vocal pitch is terrible.  The lyrics whether written by Noel or Liam are cliched tripe with distressingly nonsensical rhyme schemes. I don't really know what Bono has to do with it, but at least he can sing, write good melodies, and for all his supposed arrogance, he is genuinely devoted to humanitarian causes. If we're talking arrogance, Noel Gallagher is the one who has been quoted as saying his songs are as good or better than songs written by any songwriter of any era.

As far as it being cool to bash them these days, I can honestly say I've thought they were crap since hearing Wonderwall for the first time. It's a matter of opinion - we can agree to disagree.
