Title: I miss Oh My God
Post by: RnT on November 09, 2006, 11:52:34 AM
I really like this song
its a great song and Axl?s vocals are 100% better now than at RIR 3 and 02 Tour
nice song to put before Better on the setlist

a question, if they decide to put OMG on CD, will Axl re-record his vocals?

I agree, i think its a great song. It does sound a bit dated though, like it belongs on a NIN album or something. Not sure about Axls vocals, he sounds very artificial. If it was included on CD i think it would sound like a completly different song. Who knows!

I love the song, but I dont wish it to be on CD.
we already know at least 6 of 13 songs...
I dont want omg taking up room.
I hope a better version leaks tough...

I love the track, and I loved it when it was played live in 2001. I'm almost certain it would be a re-recorded version if it was to appear on Chinese Democracy.

Sadly the chances of that happened are tiny ?

its a favourite newer song of mine - i think it rocks.  Maybe it could be a B-side on one of the next singles???  That would be fantastic - I reckon the whole band would tear it up live they way they are currently performing....

Oh jesus no. I mean, it's a great song. I love it. The major complaint is the chorus... And Jesus. Get over it. It's not a chorus! Like Breakdown. The 'breakdown...' bit isn't really a chorus as such, because it isn't that kind of song. Just because it has the title of the song in it, christ.

The reason that it probably won't make the cut though is because that incarnation of the band is too different from the current lineup, and the album wouldn't flow. Having guests on the album, such as Brian May, for the odd song would be great. But changing the lineup mid album? Hmm. It would, of course, make a great b-side.

I don't want it live and I don't want it on the record.

I want TWAT and Madagascar (played by Buckethead) on the record.

it`s from 1999....   most other songs we know were written then as well

we even have the irs, twat and catcher in the rye demos from 1999

i think they should play it live again. i guess it was on the options list in 2002 as they played the intro at various shows (london in august for example...)

Yes, but none of those songs were formally released. I mean, to include Oh My God would be as if it were a cover version. Re-recording the leaks at some time or other makes sense, re-recording a previously released song does not. Because, as far as Axl's vision goes, we can assume that Oh My God as we have heard it was how it was supposed to end up.

Dizzy has already said that they've recorded a newer version with current lineup (minus Bumblefoot I suppose) of that song so if they would re-release it, it would be that version and nothing do with Navarro, Freese or Sunshine.

Btw, I just love that song, and I too miss it.

Personally I'd like to hear the new band tear up those two songs on the album.  As for OMG:  I agree w/ Jim - It was already officially released, so re-recording it would be like doing a cover..

I'd still like to hear it though, as I love that song, which apparently, some don't.. :-\

Since Madagascar is one of my favorite songs, I would have to disagree.. CITR is a good song too.. so I'm personally on the fence about the whole 'Oh My God' thing.

I think the new band could really nail this song... plus I think Axl has the chops back to pull off the vocals live.

Songs a hidden gem if you can grasp the lyrics.

Title: Re: I miss Oh My God
Post by: Risico on November 09, 2006, 02:26:51 PM
Indeed. The lyrics are up there with Civil War and CITR as some of Axl's finest. It surprises me that the song is as lyrically complex as it is, given the fact that it was the public's first look at the beta-version of New GNR.

Anyway, I totally miss the song - Someone should yell out for them to play it at one of the concerts, just to see what happens. Richard confirmed in a roundabout way that he'd rehearsed the song back in '02, so maybe there's hope to see it live again.

Oh My God should defently be played live, maybe not every concert, but off and on.

It's a shame how underated this song is, because it's fantastic.  Awesome lyrics, great music, there's so much going on in it!  I pefered the live version though with the changes they made to the end, but the stuido version is awesome as well.

I wouldn't want to see it on CD, since we've already heard so much off the album, it'd be taking time away from a song that we haven't heard yet... but if it was going to be on there I guess I wouldn't mind.  I'd rather see it on a b-side to a single though.

No I think this is a great song also, I'd love to see a re-recorded version turn up somewhere, or the odd appearance in the live setlist again. It's a very unique song. I don't see how it could sound dated though. It's very different. I understand the obvious NIN vibe and influence but it does honestly sound like a very contemporary/modern update of GNR. It doesn't just sound like GNR mixed by NIN or whatever.. it works very naturally, it doesn't sound forced or overdone.

The opening to Oh My God is one of the rawest, hardest and totally badass openings ever. Brilliant lyrics and vocals. From then on though ::) It simply lacks structure, the classic GN'R structure. The chorus is just weak, the solo uninspiring and without edge. If this song has been reworked the last couple of years it could have the potential of a killer.

i agree it has moments of greatness but overall i find it just ok. the lyrics are fantastic tho, too bad sometimes its hard to hear them cuz of all the vocal effects and stuff going on in the background.

Oh My God must be one of those songs that has to grow on you. I didn't like it at first.

I remember back when it debuted on the radio. They built it up for a week. After they played, the DJ goes, "Well, we're never going to play THAT again." For the next half hour, he kept airing calls where people were saying how terrible the song is.

Now i think it sould be on the album. Redone with this 06 line and be on CD. Its up there with Better and IRS mybe better then them. It just fuckin rocks. I love the remastered HOB live verson of it. Fuckin' A! I can understand why Silk Worms doesn't exactly jive with the casual fan, but that shit is a gem. Totally deserves a studiorelease. The part around the 2 minute mark with the synth is almost psychedelic. Pitman got some serious talent.

GN'R and Pitman forever.

Silk Worms has potiential IMO, it just lacks a lot.  If it were reworked it could probably become a great song, but IMO it still sounded like an unfinished demo.  It doesn't have the potiental to be a chart topper, or the best song on CD, but it has the potiental to be a nice track that's better than a "filler" track.

I'm not a huge fan of this song.  I think it sounds like Axl is experimenting with something that doesn't work with the GN'R sound.   It's not a bad song but not a GN'R song.  More like a Rob Zombie song.

Fuckin' A! I can understand why Silk Worms doesn't exactly jive with the casual fan, but that shit is a gem. Totally deserves a studiorelease. The part around the 2 minute mark with the synth is almost psychedelic. Pitman got some serious talent.

GN'R and Pitman forever.

Would you describe the 2 minute mark and funky techno beats or super funky techno beats?

would be great if they release it with CD but as a bonus track

yeah like 2 minutes after the last song on CD OMG kicks off in a re-recorded vesrion, just like "look at your game girl" after "i don't care about you" on TSI

That would be KICK ASS? : ok:

Knowing Axl, all of Chinese Democracy would probably be hidden tracks :hihi:

Seriously though YES I miss Oh My God!

i love OMG. it's how i got back into GNR. my roommate at the time was big into hip hop and he told me "if axl rose pissed into a microphone you'd buy the recording."  but i loved the song and still listen to it all the time.

i think axl said something about regretting releasing it, and kind of being convinced to do so, and that sucks - but it meant a lot to me.

and also, it came with an awesome press release.

"The fight of good vs. evil, positive vs. negative, man against a seemingly undefeatable, undeterrable, unrevealed destiny, along with the personal and universal struggle to attain, maintain and responsibly manage freewill can be and often is frustrating to say the least."  -Axl Rose.

it`s from 1999....   most other songs we know were written then as well

we even have the irs, twat and catcher in the rye demos from 1999

i think they should play it live again. i guess it was on the options list in 2002 as they played the intro at various shows (london in august for example...)

Did they??? do you remember when in the set?  I was there and I dont recall at all - must dig out the bad quality boot i have lurking at home...

at the end of buckets solo for some seconds
