Title: AFD Voted #1 Rock Album Of All Time By Kerrang
Post by: Refused on November 09, 2006, 11:56:55 AM
So, instead of discussing Chinese Democracy for the millionth time, here's something different!
Kerrang have voted Appetite For Destruction the greatest rock album of all time, ahead of bands such as Metallica, AC/DC, Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin.
Anyone agree with that? Or should the far superior Led Zeppelin IV have got the top spot?
And, as a side note, anyone here actually remember the release of AFD? Bet it was more fun than Chinese Democracy!

I agree with it! (mainly because I don't like Led Zep)

And I remember when AFD was released. I think I was blowing spit bubbles and learning to clap  :hihi:

Led Zep IV wasn't Led Zep's best album.

Good move by Kerrang, first bit of positive spin by them on Guns for a couple of years.

I was suprised as well, I thought something hideous like Nirvana was going to be at Number 1.
Being Kerrang though, I wouldn't be suprised if there was some sort of sarcastic comment about the new Guns n Roses in the write up of the album. I haven't read through it all yet.

AFD is the best ALBUM of all time, let alone best rock album in my humble opinion!

And I do remember when Appetite was released, I was 14 and it changed my taste in music forever. 8 Copies of AFD later and it still sounds as good to me as the day I bought it.

That's surprising, especially considering what Axl said about Kerrang in 'Get in the Ring'.  It's a great album though, and I would agree w/ that..

you guys are crazy calling AFD the best rock album of all time.  I would say it's in the top 20 or so, but definately not the best ever.  You can't even compare AFD to albums like the beatles' white album, abbey road, and sgt. sepper's, Dylan's Blood on the Tracks or Highway 61 revisited, etc. (the list goes on).  AFD is a fucking great album but definately isn't in the league that these other albums are in, as far as what they did for changing music etc.  AFD has a lot of great songs but didn't really change the way people approach pop music.

For starters, The Beatles, nor Dylan are rock. Secondly, GNR did with one album what took the aforementioned bands several albums to achieve. And your last remark is just... just really... really... wrong!

GNR & Nirvana were the Beatles & Stones of their decade. There has not been a new GNR yet, although Nirvana has been mimicked a dozen times in their day and age.

Well, AFD was esentially a musical dead end, while those three albums opened doors for tons of other bands to experiment in new musical realms

Listen, I don't wanna diss the beatles, 'cause I realise what they've done for pop music, but in all honesty, I've always regarded the beatles as a boysband "avant la lettre", whilest the stones were rock 'n roll.

I think we're actually using the same argument to prove our opposite points man... To me the fact that AFD has never been 'redone' or 'improved' upon shows that the bar was set too high for others to emulate or pick up where they left. And I genuinly think I'm not alone on this. I really think you will find lot's of people outside of these forums that'll agree.

hrm, well the beatles started out as a so-called "boy band," but then used their success as a means to experiment and grow musically.  you certinaly could not refer to them as a boy band for the post-help albums.   they were anything but.  another band who has taken this route is radiohead.

i see what you're saying, but can't say I agree.  To me, the quality of music can be best judged by how it changes/influences the future of music.  Quality influences peers and younger generations, who then go on to make more music and hopefully influence others.  AFD was great in it's day, but it didn't really change the way we approach rock music.  in fact, it was really pushed to the wayside by bands like nirvana, nin, and radiohead (and I think Axl would agree with that statement).  there are a few bands (avenged sevenfld) who were influencecd by gnr, but these guys really aren't and won't make a difference in the future of music.

Those albums are overrated - in reality they're very very average. For me AFD is the greatest album ever!

P.S. Truth is, we all have our own favorites.  : ok:

I see what you mean... It's just that I've always liked the early beatles better. Pablo Honey and parts of The Bends are the only things Radiohead has ever done that I can remotely appreciate... Creep is actually the only Radiohead song to even remotely achieve commercial succes here in Belgium (I think it peaked at n? 10 in the charts or something).

You are right, quality influences youth. I'm not agreeing on the part where you say AFD didn't change the way we approach rock music though, AFD singlehandedly killed 80's hair metal and actually paved the way for bands like nirvana, stp, alice in chains, pearl jam and the likes. If find AFD's raw bluesy feel to be way closer to the grunge movement then anything else that came out in the late eighties.

I do like the early beatles also, but it was their later work (without a doubt) that changed rock forever.  also, i should pount out htat commercial success has nothing to do with how influential an album is.  e.g. Raw Power by the Stooges or the velvet underground and nico.

I was hoping you weren't gonna point that out ;). I know commercial succes says almost nothing about quality, even more than ever in this day 'n age...

Ok, so you like it when bands "try something" different. I've always been more of a "who cares about something new when you can just strive to make something excellent" kinda guy when it comes to music. I absolutely love mid-nineties Primal Scream for instance. But what about a whole new generation of blues-type guitar players inspired by Slash? You can't say these don't exist, right?

its better than blood on the tracks. it shook up the main stream. it made a cultural impact-- maybe one greater than abbey road (my choice for best rock record.)

I bought my first copy of 'Appetite For Destruction' on October 10, 1987. It was literally a day that changed the life of a then-16 year old teen. Because I was the first person I knew who had this album, I felt as if I were a GN'R messiah, trying to spread the word about this landmark recording to my fellow friends and high school students. The album helped teach me that life outside my small town wasn't always pretty, and that it was ok to fight authority figures if you believed in what you were fighting for.

It is unquestionably the best album of all time, in my humble opinion.

Actually, Led Zeppelin II is just as good as IV. AFD is the best straight hard rock album since Led Zeppelin II in my opinion. Led Zeppelin IV is a great combination of Led Zeppelin I, II, and III (but not really a straight up hard rock album due to "The Battle of Evermore," "Going To California, and "Stairway to Heaven" being more ballad-type songs). I definitely would have AFD in my top 5 of rock albums, but probably not #1.

AFD, Zeppelin I and IV, and Exile On Main Street are all on the #1 spot. It all depends on mood.

After that it gets a little cloudy. Back In Black, Album Of The Year, Let It Bleed, Zeppelin II, Physical Grafitti, Beggars Banquet, A Night At The Opera. Many great ones.

AFD is definatly the greatest DEBUT album ever.  And arguably the greatest hard rock album. But when you start throwing in Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, etc, it gets harder to determine.

Yep, it's the best debut for sure. I don't think it's a better hard rock album than Led Zeppelin II, however. They're on the same level pretty much in my book.

AFD was voted the best rock album of all time, not the best album of all time, nor the most influential album of all time.

And even though tremendously influential, those album you mention had a lot of crappy songs and filler tracks, hell the beatles even let Ringo sing lead on some of the tracks! That's just like letting Duff sing lead or something, how stupid would that be...

i  got appetite in 1988 at the perfect time in my life- i was 14 and had just started buying lp's instead of taping the charts as i had done before - i thinks its true that everyone looks back on the era they discover music as the greatest period of music  there is. just ask anyone brought up the sixties no one will ever touch the beatles ,stones or led zep in their opinion. i look back on the late eighties and see metallica u2 maiden all in their prime and thats my era -i even loved bon jovi and def leppard back then . nearly twenties year on  i have a slighty different view on some of that stuff but one undiminishing fact remains to this day appetite was mind blowingly good back then and it still is today so "take that one to heart". : ok:

Now come on, there were at least five people who had a great deal of interest in it. Sadly, I think five sales are all that's needed to debut at #185.

you guys are crazy calling AFD the best rock album of all time.? I would say it's in the top 20 or so, but definately not the best ever.? You can't even compare AFD to albums like the beatles' white album, abbey road, and sgt. sepper's, Dylan's Blood on the Tracks or Highway 61 revisited, etc. (the list goes on).? AFD is a fucking great album but definately isn't in the league that these other albums are in, as far as what they did for changing music etc.? AFD has a lot of great songs but didn't really change the way people approach pop music.

Realize that this is Kerrang....so it should really say 'Hard Rock'.  So the Beatles and Dylan aren't in the discussion.  I would disagree that 'it didn't really change the way people approach pop music'.  I would agree with most that Grunge officially killed the glam scene which was dominating the late 80's, but Appetite paved the way for it all.  GNR bridged the gap between the two genres and Appetite was the main reason.

I hate Led zep (I just can't fuckin' stand this band, that's all), the Beatles annoy me, and the list goes on...

So yeah, I think Appetite for destruction is the best rock album of all time (even though I'll always have a soft spot for the Use you illusion!!!!).
