Title: Locomotive--most underrated song?
Post by: RichardNixon on August 25, 2005, 06:27:48 PM
This song rocks. It's easily one Of the band's best songs ever--great riff, solos, vocals, lyrics, it's an amaziong song. Way better and more complex than anything out on the radio nowadays. I wish it were more well known.

Yeah, I see what you're saying. It was a little different. No one does songs like that. I like it, but its not even close to being the best song on Illusions. I was surprised that it was talked about as being epic. I cant believe I'm gonna say this, but I think the song needed more work. It was missing something. Its like Double Talkin Jive: A great song that was missing something. A little bit of "finishing touches". :D

I thought it was perfect the way it is, a messy masterpiece.

I like the song a lot.  One of my favorites in the Illusions.  I've heard from more than one person that the drumming during the chorus sounds really off.  I kinda get what they're saing, but all in all I think its an excellent song.

I like the first 40 seconds... Then Axl starts squeaking...  ;)

the chorus is perfect timing, just off beats, it really works.

Jameslofton, i reckon Locomotive is prob my fav from Illusions, the lyrics are THE BEST I EVER HEARD!!

Post by: jameslofton29 on August 29, 2005, 05:57:42 PM
Clintron, you really think that? Not many people think its the best song on Illusions. In fact, I think that if GNR had put their best songs from the 2 cds into one, this 'epic' would not have made it.

I'm gonna say this And i think a lot will laugh but this is the Bohemian Raphsody of Guns N Roses, its a master piece, the only diference is that Borap is a lot well known than Locomotive, The lyrics is just exactly what I think and I guess I think like that cause the first time I read I was 13, I grew up listening this song and Breakdown which are my favorite, they are both made by AXL.  ;D

Loco-motive is my favorite song of the UYI's & it's really not even close.

Title: Re: Locomotive--most underrated song?
Post by: SwedeChildO'Mine on August 30, 2005, 10:31:16 AM
It's a great song, top 5 in UIY2.

But I wouldn't say it's an underrated song here on this board. From what I've read many people are holding Locomotive as one of tops on UYI2.

But if you mean underrated by an average music listener I'd agree with you.

Title: Re: Locomotive--most underrated song?

I love the extro of the song, especially the piano, but I think breakdown is more underated.

Title: Re: Locomotive--most underrated song?
Post by: Skeletor on August 30, 2005, 07:05:53 PM
The only problem with the song is the chorus, otherwise it's pure perfection. Those are some of my favorite lyrics ever.

Breakdown is way underrated, much more than Locomotive, and yes its not underrated here that we all love Guns N Roses, but for people that usually hear music and not that aware of GNR  :peace:

Most non GNR fans does not know Locomotive, Breakdown, Estranged & Coma. I bet more people likes songs like Yesterdays ecause it ha a "video".

Locomotive is definitely underrated, but I don't think it is the most underrated GnR song, I'm thinking more, So Fine, It's So Easy, and Don't Damn Me.

The ending/outro always sends me to heaven.   'Love's so straaaaaange'

The only complaint I have with the song is I like Axl's vocals in it .  I'm not asking for a WTTJ voice, just something better than this nasal voice.

Title: Re: Locomotive--most underrated song?
Post by: SwedeChildO'Mine on September 01, 2005, 03:16:40 PM

"Estranged" has a video too.

Yep, but MTV ignored (not 100 %, but..) it because it was too long. I guess not many non GNR fans has seen it.

I think most GN'R fans are familiar with the Estranged video.

Of course a lot GNR are aware of that video even my sister is aware of that video and she is not a GNR fan, but as I am her brother I always listen GNR in my house  ;D
Bad thing is when I'm with friends that doesn't listen GNR or just heard a few songs they don't even knew that estranged had a video and I go  :o

The lyrics are awesome, and I love Axls voice...

It's just a weird song, it doesn't feel like there is a chorus, the end goes for ages etc.
I don't know anything about the technical side of a song, (and I'm sure somene will jump in and tell me I'm wrong) but it seems that GnR played with the form of a song on some of their more epic works, Coma and Estranged spring to mind.

This song ROCKS! The guitar work is unlike anything i have heard before....no one has made a song like this...There is alot going on and is layered. Axl's vocals are amazing. If you listen he sings this song about 4 times with a different way all layered over eachother. It is a great tune and a hidden gem as it was never a single so the masses of people have never heard it.....which is too bad.

This is one of the songs, along with Coma, that I direct the GnR haters and Axl bashers to when they say GnR didn't have anything interesting to say  8)

 You can use you illusion-
Let it take you where it may
We live and learn
And then sometimes it's best to walk away
Me I'm just here hangin' on
It's my only place to stay at least
For now anyway
I've worked too hard for my illusions
Just to throw them all away

Its surprising to me, that some people believe that Locomotive is an underrated song, it isnt for me, I have always believed that is one of the best o theirs... especially the last nostalgic sad part... ?the solo is just amazing... Slash has done an excellent work there, and axl's lyrics even the last verse "Love so strange" perfectly fits with the mood of the song... I wish there was a video for the song, instead of Estranged, no disrespect to that one, but Locomotive beats it... ? I can only tell to finish this long statement that probably no one will read that Locomotive is the masterpiece of the duet "Slash/Rose" we are missing nowadays....

If love is blind... I guess Ill buy myself....... ?..... .... a cane ;)

LOVE SO STRANGE!

It is a great song, and thats what I love about Gn'R and their CDs... they are all different and unique.  I have been into these guys since the beginning when I was in 8th grade (wow, long time ago) and songs come to grow on me more and more.  The past few years its been Locomotive, Coma, Right next store to hell, instead of the the usual SCOM, WTTJ, etc.

When I first bought Illusion CDs I would pass over songs like Locomotive, Coma, 14 years, etc., but now this is what I listen too a lot as far as Gn'R.   A lot of people had a problem with the Illusion albums, I love them, and both are different.  I love the diversity.  Locomotive and Coma provide this.  I started listening to Locomotive a lot a few years ago and now always have it on before a night out!!!  It gets my night started!!!!!!!

You are definitely correct in saying this song never got it's proper due. I think the vocals are like a raw version of what came through on Oh My God, just in it's style. The rest of the song is tremendous and I never understood how that f*cking outro went un-noticed by anyone other than Hardcore fans -
I used to play it for people and always got cool reactions. Even chicks liked it.

I hereby state that the new band should take a crack at this song in concert this summer - 06'

they should "take a crack" at many songs like locomotive, breakdown and i would really like to see them do coma. it's a long shot but...

and locomotive is a great song, slash's guitar sounds amazing on that one. but it would be really hard to take it out as a single considering it's 7+ min. now people get bored if a song has 4+ mins. but i'll still have locomotive as one of my favourites from the illusions

The outro is amazing. ?Great tune.

The lyrics are written well, it's just that they are more than a tad misogynistic for me. ?Sure women'll break your heart from time to time but that's no reason to hate them like Axl appears to in many of his songs. ?Like he never broke anyone's heart. ?I think the worst example of this, is the song "Back off Bitch". ?Worst GNR tune. ?So immature. ?I cringe. ?At least "Used to love her" was funny, but in these cases Axl is really serious.

Axl - lighten up dude. ?Live, love, forgive, forget. ?Such things make you feel great...

...but I digress.

The band really rocks on Locomotive. ?The song is well placed beside "pretty tied up". ?Both tunes have a similar sound and feel.

I believe Locomotive is the basis for the Use Your Illusion titles.  By far the greatest song on UYI2 (my favorite album) but breakdown is close.  Locomotive is a strong contender for my favorite song with November Rain, but in the end, November Rain takes it.

Have always loved Locomotive. Never thought it got enough praise. "I bought me an illusion and hung it on the wall, let it fill my head with dreams I had to have them all" or something very close to that was such a brilliant line. I always liked Izzy's rythmn work on this track. Its very underrated to many but not to a true GNR fan

How is it repetive?

I believe Locomotive is the basis for the Use Your Illusion titles.  By far the greatest song on UYI2 (my favorite album) but breakdown is close.  Locomotive is a strong contender for my favorite song with November Rain, but in the end, November Rain takes it.

Absolutely!!!  Locomotive is the "title track" for the illusions records even though the name of the song isn't use you illusion.  The one song that sticks out to me most from the July 1991 forum show I attended(remember, the albums weren't out for these shows).  In 1991, I was 8 months away from hiring out with the Southern Pacific Railroad.  The  Union Pacific railroad bought us in 1996.  In 1998, I became a locomotive engineer.  I had a 60 minute drive into work my first night as an engineer.  I listened to Locomotive 6-7 times.  90-100 miles per hour on the empty 91 freeway.  My favorite line:  But you're such a stupid woman, and I'm such a stupid man.  It calls her out but he admits to his fuckedupedness.

Therein lies the FtheUP.  To know em' is to f'm

well on a GNR fan board isn't every song "under rated"?  Now.... MOST under rated is a big debate.

No, it's not. The artwork is the basis for the titles.

Well, since they wrote the music before Axl chose the artwork.  The chosen artwork would be based from the music.  Since Locomotive is the only song that mention illusion, it seems like a logical assumption, though I seem to remember Axl saying he got the idea from this song.  I could be wrong though.

No, it's generic.

One of the UYI's fillers.

It's not the only song, DDM also mentions it.

Axl was cleary into illusions and everything that goes with it, still is, so it's no wonder that a couple of songs among 30 would mention the word. A word which is also very fitted for lyrics.

But as to what determined the choice of album title I'm only going after what Axl said himself. By using your logic, isn't it also strange that the paintings the artwork is based on is named Use Your Illusion? It's a chicken and egg thing both ways, that's why I'm leaning towards what Axl said.

I love this lyric:

SWEETNESS IS A VIRTUE
AND YOU LOST YOUR VIRTUE LONG AGO
YOU KNOW I'D LIKE TO HURT YOU
BUT MY CONSCIENCE ALWAYS TELLS ME NO
YOU COULD SELL YOUR BODY ON THE STREET
TO ANYONE WHOM YOU MIGHT MEET
WHO'D LOVE TO TRY AND GET INSIDE
AND BUST YOUR INNOCENCE OPEN WIDE

But I don't know if it's MOST underrated.

Axl is really quite an aggressive person isn't he...

Why does he want to 'hurt' women...?

Locomotive is one of my favorite GNR songs.  Anyone who sayd it is a filler is dead wrong.  There aren't any GNR fillers anyway.

Re: Estranged

Beautiful song.? My favorite too.? The problem is, its drippy!? Every chick I was ever with says its drippy, and I can't share my appreciation for this song with them.? Nobody is willing to "give it time, to read between the lines".  It makes sense though.? Its a song about losing your love so its a catch 22:? Beautiful song about love, that portends its end...? Sad.? Drippy, yet brilliant and beautiful.

Aside from the outro, which as I said, is terrific, the song just sounds generic - And for some reaon, I find the chorus to be extremely irritating. Perhaps the only Guns song that really makes me feel that way. It just goes on far too long without changing itself up, then that random but glorious outro caps it off.

This song didn't need to be longer than 5 minutes, but it goes on for nearly 8 (if memory serves) and it just drags.

Now Estranged, on the other hand - That's a truly underrated and incredible song.

I don't think he wants to hurt women, I think the women have hurt him, how he deals with the pain, is obviously through lyrics.

"Locomotive" is one of the better songs on Use Your Illusion II, but my favorite off that album has always been "Breakdown". I can completely identify with the lyrics of that song.

"If love is blind I guess I'll buy myself a cane" ....fuckin brilliant. I'd love for dizzy to do the outro with the band as a solo that would be awesome. One of my fav's from the UYI set.

I love the intro, outro and the triple layered vocals using Axl's three different voices is a cool twist. I just think the middle of the song goes on too long and could be a bit shorter, combining all the solos into one better one of the same length to give it a bit more punch.

yeah i heard the 89 demo and the 91 inglewood.. the inglewood version is amazing but sound quality can be better

plus.. i do not think loco is underrated at all.. i think it is underrated by the band and they should have played it more live

It's strange that what fans consider some of their best songs seemed to be underrated by the band. At least they didn't play them much. Coma, Locomotive, Breakdown, Don't Damn Me (never played? :P), Rocket Queen (after Izzy bailed) to name the obvious ones.

And now, seemingly, There Was A Time. What is up with that? Most bands would have killed to have such songs on the setlist.

I think they should make a GH's II & release Locomotive as a single for it. Locomotive never got its' due.? :peace:

eh, i dont think it would do very well as a single, not that its bad. its fucking awesome but the mainstream audience would be too dense/stupid to comprehend its brilliance.

i love the song, easily one of my favorites. this song really sents Guns N' Roses apart from all those hair/pop metal bands they were always associated with. it also showcases Axl's lyrical genius.

The lyrics in Locomotive were some of the most intense and honest ones he ever wrote.  Shit like this was ahead of it's time.

I like this song, and it was supposed to be included on the official 2 Disc set that GNR were meant to put out. Live I think that it was overshadowed by Bad Obsession, and that this song was played in its place as it was an older track.

this is a VERY underated song...but that was bound to happen...they had 30 tracks combined on those 2 albums....certain things were going to get lost....
