Post by: stolat on June 19, 2007, 09:55:42 AM
But they bought tickets for the Guns N' Roses experience didn't they! They should just chill and enjoy the show.......it's more fun that way.

I think they came on way too early for the Adelaide concert.......we were up for it!

I think the bullshit chants are all in good fun though - that's a very aussie thing to do - especially coming from Queensland. Aussies live in a pretty tough environment.....

Man, sounds like an volitile show.
I think leaving is the worst thing Axl could do. Now, obviously the guy who threw the beer is a fucking idiot and should be kicked out, but if Axl ends up walking for whatever reason it would be a big mistake. Firstly, having a crowd of what, 15/20,000, who have been waiting untill midnight, only to see the band play for a short time before leaving (because of one idiot and bad sound), who have been drinking probably, not to mention paid alot for a ticket; a walk off I fear could result in a riot deal. Aussis are very passionate.
Also, all around Australia, reports have been great- this would totally ruin all of those and tarnish the tour.
I just hate it how one idiot can ruin it for the thousands who just want a good show.

Side note- I saw Roger Waters at the Brissy Ent Center, and the sound was great, so it isn't the venue.

Title: Re: June 19th Brisbane
Post by: stolat on June 19, 2007, 10:33:23 AM
The band need only play for half an hour and then they can walk if they want - it's in the contract.

The concert will probably have to finish early anyway so people can get back to the babysitters on time....

That guy would have been dealt with pretty quick......

Well I can't...you're going to a GNR show, it's widely known that they always come on late.... for heavens sake; there are even non GNR fans that know that GNR comes onstage late all the time, if you hate it that much, don't go, or just come to the venue around 9PM or something...you can't expect GNR to only give concerts on friday's and saturdays just because people have to work/go to school the next morning.

Oh btw, Thanks Tonia and Tynia for the updates! From the sound of it, it's a pretty volatile show  :-\

It's 11:50. Sounds like a pretty much midnight start.
I can understand the crowds frustration (the 'Bullshit" chants)- it's Wednesday night, people have work/school tomorrow, finishing up at 2am or later is pretty annoying, and harsh. People wont be able to fully enjoy the show, worrying about how late it's running. Not a fan at all of this stunt when people have work and stuff the next day  >:(
Well I can't...you're going to a GNR show, it's widely known that they always come on late.... for heavens sake; there are even non GNR fans that know that GNR comes onstage late all the time, if you hate it that much, don't go, or just come to the venue around 9PM or something...you can't expect GNR to only give concerts on friday's and saturdays just because people have to work/go to school the next morning.

Oh btw, Thanks Tonia and Tynia for the updates! From the sound of it, it's a pretty volatile show  :-\

Sure, well I'll admit the 'Bullshit' chants are pretty stupid and unnesicary. But the frustration I understand- people would be looking at their watches quite a bit, taking away from the experience. But I deffinatly do not agree with throwing stuff. Waiting isn't an excuse.
I'm going to both the Sydney shows (first time seeing them), so I guess I'll experience the wait then  :peace:

Good to see the show going on- nothing worse than one idiot ruining it for everyone. And also- witnissing the intro to WTTJ twice would be pretty cool!

You can't just go up and slap people! ?What's the differnce with throwing a dangerous item?

That really sucks.

Axl's used to this shit...fair play to him though. He's dealing with it much better these days...he's probably learned from his mistakes but I can completely understand him getting pissed off. It's good he didn't storm off completely that would've been a riot for sure! It's a pain in the hole having to wait for a show to start but that's Axl for you, he doesn't care, he comes on when he's ready and if it pisses fans off well that's their own tough shit! Don't think it's right to throw stuff at the stage though. Guy should be fucked out for that.

Hats off to Axl for not cancelling. ?With every show, I feel more and more like Axl's finally starting to turn a real corner. ?It fills me with optimism. ?

I know Axl really doesn't feel right taking the stage on time, but I hope he's able to realize that unfortunate episodes like last night are way more likely if he goes on late. ?When people are pissed off, tired, and drunk, things like this happen. ?Axl doesn't have the power to keep them from getting drunk. ?But he can do a whole lot to keep them from being pissed off and tired.

But it's his call, you know. ?I guess I'm cool with him going on late, if he's gonna be cool with fans throwing shit at him.

BTW in American English when someone says "it's one of those days (or nights)" it usually means things are not going well and you just have to try make it through. I've never heard it used in the context of things going well.

Ok here is a quick review peeps as promised. It's 3.00am now and I really gotta catch some shut eye.

Roste Tattoo and Baz. Were great. Really earn't their money. Ihave never been a Baz fan but shit he knows how to put on a show and get the audience involved.

BTW I was front centre floor about 8 rows back from stage. So I probably had the best seat (so to speak) in the house. My feet, Lower back and legs are fucked from standing on the concrete floor. The audience would have been about 10,000. 3/4 full id guess. Ages seemed to be late 20's to early 40's.

There was approx an hour wait between Baz and Guns. This was too much for the yobbo Brisbane crowd and chants of Bull shit and so on started. Finally the opening riffs of WTJ sounded out and when Axl came into view it was obvious he had the shits. With a luke warm welcome from the crowd he felt compelled to stop the band before a note had even been sung. He said something like "oh so this is how it's gonna be?' I dont have to fucking be here ya know?" (Really??)

I couldn't believe it...but then again I could. Axl was taking on the crowd with almost a childish approach. I loved it. It set the scene for the opening half of the set with Axl basically standing and singing into the mic only moving around for a casual stroll but the whole time looking. He held stares with the audience but on the flip side though he wasn;t moving much he was still singing great. In fact his voice throughout the whole concert was the best I have ever heard it live. He was really on song in that department shifting from raspy to super sonic high really smoothly. The crowd was one over after SCOM and Axl got more into the show with every song. Here is my attemt at the set list from memory. The main things here is that he didn't invite the crowd to sing KOHD and he played the Blues and Better back to back.

WTJ
ISO
MR BS
LALD
SCOM
YCBM
THE BLUES
BETTER
OTGM
MY MICHELLE (with Baz of course and this really lifted Axls spirits. You cant help but lagh at Baz)
NR
IRS
Patience
NT

ENCORE

MADAGASCAR
PC ( i missed catching the whistle by one hand)
Aussie Aussie Oi Oi Oi

Show was about to hours.

Thats about it for now folks I am rooted but I can honestly say I had the true Axl experience. ?He is as Badass as ever. Sorry about the quick review but I am stuffed.

What a bunch of fuckwits to be throwing anything at a stage. I really dont get that. Its a massive sign of disrespect.

In Adelaide and the first Melbourne show I was fairly buzzed, got there early and didnt notice how heavy the crowds alchohol consumption was.
But I was sober at the second Melbourne show and got there late (around 10:30ish) and noticed what a drunken/ugly scene it had become.
At Rod Laver you cant drink in the arena-only in the foyer and it seemed people were hanging there getting smashed. Maybe with a band like GnR that will go on late, the bar should be closed a little earlier to stop people getting out of hand?

Either way I would be pissed to be at last nights show and not only have Axl mad but also as a fan to see him get disrespected.
His great mood during the 3 shows I went to really helped make the shows more special and its a shame that some Brissy bogans ruined it.

I NEVER thought I would be one saying any bar should be closed early....but.... if doors open around 7:30 and Gnr dont hit the stage till 11:30 thats 4 hours of solid drinking.
You would be suprised at how many ppl didnt bother with Rose Tattoo or Baz and just drank and drank till Axl hit the stage.
I dunno...I agree that people should be responsible for their own actions and a few shouldnt be able to ruin getting boozed for everyone...but those same few have the potential to ruin the whole show for evryone so maybe closing the bar when Baz does his final song wouldnt be that big of a deal...

Ah fuck it....who am I to be the party police? lol

(Axl says he's a lipsync actor)? :hihi:
Patience

Ok I remember reading that someone accused Axl of lipsyncing (or at least lipsyncing the whistle)....
But... Where did it actually come from (the accusation)?

no but people and alcohol  should eat something maybe.while they waited maybe.to soak up some of the alcohol.it makes more sense to pace yourself while drinking at concerts.it don't allways go that way though.if you are responcable while drinking i haven't herd of that too much either.you can flag someone who is intoxicated if noticed right away.but they don't keep up like in regular bars.you would be flagged and told not to come back.

I'm glad the show went on after the beer throwing incident.  :nervous:

But I feel bad for that crowd, having that one guy fuck it up for everyone.  In Chicago, it was a non-stop crowd sing-along for the first three songs, and the whole atmosphere was great.  I can only imagine that some guy might have lessened the greatness of that part of the show.

Anyway, what kind of rock n' roll world are we living in where people can't stay up until 2 A.M.?  I realize that most of the crap on MTV caters to people with curfews, but for the love of God, why would you let something as silly as being tired at work for one day ruin such a great evening?  Hell...isn't that why they invented sick days?  Boo-fuckin'-hoo!

On the alcohol... I saw GNR in November 2006. ?I was in the stands and there were lots of drunks around. ?They were annoying because they kept getting up and having to go the the bathroom and to get more beer!!!

On the lateness... I saw them with my husband (who is not a fan) on a Monday night. ?I was warning my husband the whole month before the show, that GNR wouldn't go on until at least 11pm and the show wouldn't end until like 2 or 2:30 in the morning or something. ?He was alright with it... although he did try to drag me out during the band's bow... ?:)

Like someone earlier said... even a casual fan will know that GNR goes on LATE.

Great reviews
Thanks everyone!!!

It's really hard to control everyone, that is why security has to be done on a one on one basis, with roamiing security etc.

? Don't forget it is not cheap pulling in a band like GNR (or whatever other band of this caliber) so you want to acheive a highest number of sales as possible, as a venue with a Food and Beverage Department most of your return will be on liquor and food sales. ?Don't forget just as the band (and of course Axl) the venues are trying to make their own excuse me.... living ? ($18 million appartments among many other spoils which they all deserve)...believe me the person who is serving the beer makes 8-10 bucks US if lucky. ?

It's good to know it's not just us in the UK which has a problem with alcohol

Cheers for the updates.
GNR march on.

-Greg

Obvioulsy we can all agree that throwing beer at the band members is stupid, even if they come on "late." With that said though, I still think it's pretty funny how childish Axl responds to things like that.  I mean it's not like he had to take it out on the whole audience by not performing like he usually does.  I guess 45 is the new 25.  :smoking:

That sucks what happened, can understand the frustration particularly if the man's been onstage for just about 5 seconds.
I hate to consider the possibilities in Sydney. But at least they kept the show going.
Hope everybody enjoyed it.

I half expected that if any Australian show might have some trouble, it would be in Brisbane. Sorry, Brisbaners - but it is bogan (redneck) central. And I can say that cos half my family are here in Brisbane and I've spent a lot of time here. Grow up, its not the end of the world to wait. I suspect it was just full of dick head yobbos too drunk to remember the show anyway.

Im hoping tonights gig which I'll be at goes down better.

I agree with this.
There's no need to get into how stupid throwing things is, we all agree on that. But I don't like it how Axl let one guy ruin it for the thousands more in attendence. The thousands who did behave, and wanted to see a good rock show, insted got a sulky Axl, who talked condisendingly to the audience as a whole, and didn't put on a performance (ie-not moving etc.).

You know it even says on the melbourne tickets: "A Late Night Rock and Roll Extravaganza".

I was surprised GNR started before 12 any night...lol...

I don't blame axl for being pissed off. Like if someone disrespected me like that seconds after starting a show I'd be annoyed about it for most of the night too.

Its just a shame for the thousands of decent fans in the city, hopefully axl realizes that for every fuckknuckle with a beer theres a dozzen aussies who love GNR!

Ron would come up to Axl n' headbut him on the shoulder for fun, but Axl didnt respond at all, it seemed Tommy was pissed at someone when he was screaming the words but came to the front of the stage afew times and gave these people the finger :hihi:

Baz had the crowd pumped last night, i was screamin' The Threat at him n' he had a camera dude point it at me, Baz was all smiles

all things considered... it still sounded like a good show.. if it was really that awful they could have just played PC for the encore... but they threw in madagascar too..  i think its cool that they are mixing up the encore a little now.. sometimes CD and maddy.. sometimes just madagascar.. and sometime just PC.. its just a little variety that makes the shows interesting..   i hated being at the shows.. and being able to predict night train, pc.. good night..  i wish they would throw in an ac/dc cover..
how was rose tatoo's version of nice boys?  did they say anything before it?   must be weird covering a song from the band that you are opening for.. i could be wrong.. but i think i remember Gnr playing mama kin when opening for aerosmith.. and when aerosmith got to mama kin in their set.. they commented on it..

Yep you bet. I moved up from Sydney 2 years ago. It's a beautiful place but it does have a large number of bogans. I like to refer to Queensland as the last redneck strong hold on the Eastern Seaboard. The land where grown men ride BMX bikes with their shirts off and the women drive V8's super cars. Cracks me up.

The alcohol was an issue. I am deadset a fuckwit magnet when I am in a crowd. I was standing their comfortably waiting for Guns to come on and then the drunk gutter trash started moving in, stinking of BO and rum. One late 30,s something fuck knuckle was off his fuce singing out Axl has ripped you all off (not impressed with having to wait) he siad he was leaving and had had enough (with was great) but he reached infront of me to try and drag his pissed mate out with him who wanted to stay. This started a scuffle right next to me. The only thing stopping me from knocking his teeth right through the back off his head was the consequence of possibly being thrown out by security before the show started.

It will be interesting to see tonight if Axl can win the crowd over...or visa versa. Either way I can't wait for tonight. Something I had forget to mention in the review was that Axl made a couple of comments implying that things behind the scenes of the concert that night eg; Crew and equipment wasn't going great. One example of this was when he sat down to play NR and a roadie hadn't set up the mic on the piano. Axl just gave him a vacant look as the roadie rushed to set it up. Cracked me up.

Some more song details about last night

LALD - sounded great and he sang the verses right on key.
SCOM & YCBM - Beautiful
Better - Axl sung the na, na, na, na part. Something he doesn't alway do live. But sounds better when he does.
The Blue - Vocally live, the best version that I have heard.

NR - Sounded great. Same shortened intro as usual.
Patience - again one of the best I have seen or heard. He sang this right after giving a speal about being accused of Lip Syncing buy some artical. He said "I can do this whole show through my arse" and held the mic to his butt.
My Michelle - went off with Baz. Probably the best of the night. And I don't really care for that song much normally.
Night Train - His voice unbelievable!!! Sang right off the register and threw everything at it.
Madagascar - One of the best live versions again. Really sang the shit out of the outro.
PC - Shortened intro.

I am really lookin forward to tonight!!!!

It's beer! thrown by a dick in the audience who thought he would get away with it!
It's a metal/rock concert........besides the Beatles had beer thrown at them all the time in Hambourg!

Ah, Hambourg, those were the days!

yeah but the difference is that the beatles couldnt batter a fish nevermind an actual person but you know that if axl got hold of the guy he would be in a whole world of pain

If I was that guy I would be more scared of the crowds reaction towards me if GNR refused to perform than Axl's reaction.

hmm - some comments here that axl let one person ruin the whole show for him and everyone else.  I'm just putting myself in the position of the entire band here.... you get to a new city.. the show is going along nicely, everyone is getting hyped..  Now we know GnR dont jump out as soon as Bach/support is off - so in the gap, they are most likely psyching up to get onstage and deliver a killer show.  To get that psyched up mentally takes a lot of mental preparation and you know how WTTJ is such a powerful opener - (amplified by robin's teasing intro notes) and the whole show does start on a very very high energy level, particularly for axl.  When you have one cock who, with one stupid idea, decides its a great idea to throw his drink at axl  or any band member in the first fkn song - well I think anyone would find it very difficult to get the energy back up again. Sure they had to wait for GnR to come onstage - so fkn what - big fkn deal. they waited years to see the band back in Oz, so whats a couple of hours - so hats off to the wanker who alone ruined the atmos with his pathetic drink-throwing in the first song.

I say credit is due to the band for continuing and putting in what sounds like a good show - from waxlrick, sounds like axl was sounding great.

So, it's heads up and onwards , this one's in the past - plenty more to look ofrward to.   :peace:

Glad you enjoyed the show.

But...(and I'm using your post only as an example of a trend I see) why does everyone seem to think that Axl just happens to do his best performance on the night that they went to the show?  :hihi:

I suppose it's a good thing.  Perhaps he's on top of his game to the extent that every audience leaves thinking he must have really just given them the show of a lifetime, which is great.  But the number of people who say that the BEST version of Song XYZ he's EVER done was right there in their city...well, it happens a lot.  I'm glad that people feel this way, because it means they probably feel like they saw a great show and got their money's worth.  But isn't it just a tiny possibility that Axl is a professional, and very good at what he does, such that he can give a very strong performance on a nightly basis?  Anyway, here's to more great shows!

To get that psyched up mentally takes a lot of mental preparation and you know how WTTJ is such a powerful opener - (amplified by robin's teasing intro notes) and the whole show does start on a very very high energy level, particularly for axl.? When you have one cock who, with one stupid idea, decides its a great idea to throw his drink at axl? or any band member in the first fkn song - well I think anyone would find it very difficult to get the energy back up again.

So, it's heads up and onwards , this one's in the past - plenty more to look ofrward to.? ?:peace:

man, i dont have the 20 years experience Axl has had with doin' gigs, but ive had my fair shair n' still kickin' hard, n' when some dick is carryin' on in the crowd you handle it and handle it well, there is NO FK'n WAY i would let that fucker get the better of me!!

So unless your a musician babydolls you dont have a clue what your sayin', the hype and energy you get from back stage when waiting your cue to get up there is bigger and stronger then any high you can get, personally i think its better then sex :nervous: :nervous: :hihi:
ONE ?person or even TEN will never ruin it for me, i wont let them!!

....but like i said, i dont have the experience Axl has, so ill leave it there!!

It actually turns out that it was a soft dring (or soda pop, for our American friends) that hit him. Which makes more sence now because there is no way you could get grog into the actual arena.

I agree that I think it was poor form to let that effect the whole first half of the show. It wasnt fair on the rest of the crowd if this was the only thing that happened?? Mind you I was front and center on the floor section and I didn't see anything hit him?? I saw a plastic cup just miss him after he already stopped the song. Not that being hit by a plastic cup should worry anybody. There must be more to it than just that? He implied during the show that several things were going wrong. I think he was having one of his bipolar nights.......

The Blue - Vocally live, the best version that I have heard.
Patience - again one of the best I have seen or heard.
Madagascar - One of the best live versions again. Really sang the shit out of the outro.

I am really lookin forward to tonight!!!!

Glad you enjoyed the show.

But...(and I'm using your post only as an example of a trend I see) why does everyone seem to think that Axl just happens to do his best performance on the night that they went to the show?? :hihi:

I suppose it's a good thing.? Perhaps he's on top of his game to the extent that every audience leaves thinking he must have really just given them the show of a lifetime, which is great.? But the number of people who say that the BEST version of Song XYZ he's EVER done was right there in their city...well, it happens a lot.? I'm glad that people feel this way, because it means they probably feel like they saw a great show and got their money's worth.? But isn't it just a tiny possibility that Axl is a professional, and very good at what he does, such that he can give a very strong performance on a nightly basis?? Anyway, here's to more great shows!?

You're probably right? I have been an Axl/gnr for 18 years and like most people here I have heaps of bootlegs e.t.c. and am pretty familiar with Axl high & lows when it comes to performances so I watched and listened like a hawk at the show. Because I was so close to the stage I could see what he was putting in and I could hear really well and it just appeared to me that every note he hit was spot on. But I could have been caught up in the hype of it all.

In the case of Patience, they play it now like they used to in the early days. Mostly accustic until the final verse and and sounds great. Axl sings really sofly like on the CD.

hmm - some comments here that axl let one person ruin the whole show for him and everyone else.? well - i was going on what I had heard about the gig so - obviously not being there myself its difficult to judge.

And yes, ClintroN I have had extensive experience of playing gigs in bands for years and performing in terms of acting and dancing on stage, film and tv - I dont know about calling myself a musician at the moment but I certainly been in a position of entertaining in front of a crowd on a professional basis many times. I do have a clue about what I'm saying and I dont know why you put my name in itallics! ah well, never mind.

not everyone is able to rise above impromptu situations - GnR did for this show -which is great, but it sounds like it affected axl a fair bit to begin with.  Maybe not - maybe it was something else - again, not being there or seeing the drink/cup  hit/just miss him, I dont know.  was just trying to imagine how the energy shift would have been affected.

I imagine musicians the world over react differently to this kind of situation.
