By "I don't know about the typhoon" do you mean that there is NOT a typhoon headed that way?? Or does it mean that you haven't heard the latest weather update about if/when it's supposed to hit there?

Either way .... HOPE EVERYONE THERE HAS A GREAT TIME AND STAYS SAFE!!! :headbanger:

First of all, they came on quick.  The opening band finished around 6pm and GNR hit the stage about 40 minutes later. Setlist was fairly as we know it.  Alright fuck it.  I'll do the set list right now.  Appologies for any errors in this.

Ax says something like: "We're a little confused about what to do right now, because we don't usually do this"
BBF comes out and solos.  He starts into Don't Cry as Axl comes up behind him, crowd goes nuts.  Axl gives a "hold it there sign to BBF" and busts out "Talk to me softy..."

He did the the whole song with Frank joining in later on.

Ok this is confirmed by many Japanese fans. The crowd went nuts from the start. Axl was in extremely high spirits. many say guns put vr to shame.
after pc, axl said 'domo arigato' and they once retired from the stage. the crowd kept calling guns n roses and then, axl reappeared again and played the whole don't cry with dizzy, ron and frank . during the song axl cried. so did the crowd.

suntorytime,
either you  post some links to those "many Japanese fans" or you stop here. Because a) if you're right, then you're right. b) if you're lying, well then I guess you're lying. We have no way of telling which is the case, no matter how much you insist.
So far, you've been the only one posting about this and (as usual) half the net is copying from here.

Please everyone, wait for a confirmation by somebody with more credibility than a six-posts-and-counting member (no insult intended) to confirm this before you have heartattacks or call your grandma.

Yeah, it's true. I was there tonight and saw it. I don't remember them doing an encore as such, they just went straight into Madagascar and PC from what I remember, but then I'd been drinking all afternoon so my brain isn't all that reliable. Then Bumblefoot came out, and Axl said something like "We don't really know what we're doing here!", had a word in Bumblefoot's ear to get him to give him some time, or let him know he was going to sing, and then did so. I don't know about him crying, but I was front row and getting into it myself so I wasn't looking at him much at that point, but he seemed in great spirits the whole night, lots of smiles. Beta and the kids were dancing stage left towards the end, reminded me of the dancers for Wild Stallyan!

I've just come back from the show.

At the begining, Axl looked a bit nervous but eventually looked like really enjoying the show.

He really did Don't Cry as an unexpected second encore after some fans left. It was an amazing moment and it is true that he sang it really emotionally (it was the best song for me today), but I did not realise he was crying. ?

I think other members were also really excited at the show. Robin even dived into the crowd. Richard also looked really excited.

Great. Maybe the axl crtying bit was just my friend thought so because he was crying....
as a biggest fan of the current band  in japan, I can't feel better to hear that.

I just got back from the concert... Pitman came on synth towards the end of Dont Cry... The way I remember it, Axl and Bumble started playing together then gradually, Dizzy, Frank and Chris joined them... It was fucking amazing!!! It was very emotional for everyone there...

There will be a bootleg out there soon, as there was a Canadian guy next to me with a recorder...

Anyway, give me 20-30 mins to write up my review of the show as I have a great story to tell...

Axl's first time singing "Don't Cry" in 14 years.

I remember he told someone in the crowd during a 2002 concert to "Don't Cry", at which point the crowd erupted. But then Axl said something like "we don't do that, it's an Izzy song".

It was also Axl's first performance of the song since Shannon Hoon died, so maybe that sparked his emotions.

We've been wanting this song since '06, and Axl finally caved in and sang it...either he's in really great spirits, or Izzy's back in the band and told Axl he could sing it. Axl said some years ago that he would proberly never play Don?t Cry anymore, because of Shannon Hoon dead.
Could this be this be some kind of a year day, or tribute to Shannon Hoon, since he was crying
I almost have tears in my eyes just to hear about him crying on stage.
This must really have ment something special to him.

06.08.91 - CNE Grandstand, Toronto, Canada

opening act: Skid Row

set: Perfect Crime, Mr. Brownstone, Live And Let Die, Dust N' Bones, Bad Obsession, Double Talkin' Jive, Civil War, I Was Only Joking [Intro] / Patience, My Michelle, Don't Cry, 14 Years, November Rain, Drum Solo, Guitar Solo, Godfather Theme, Rocket Queen, Pretty Tied Up, You're Crazy [w/ Sebastian Bach], Only Women Bleed [Intro] / Knockin' On Heaven's Door, Bad Time [Intro] / Sweet Child O' Mine, Estranged, You Ain't The First, Used To Love Her, Yesterdays, Paradise City, Welcome To The Jungle

notes:

Axl says how tonight's crowd is much better than last night's (6.7). Axl mentions that 4 years ago he wanted the band to play 'Knockin' On Heaven's Door' because he wanted his generation to hear it. A rare performance of 'Welcome To The Jungle' as the last song. The tour was still early at this point and GN'R was still experimenting with their set. At some point during the show, a fan jumps on stage and charges toward Axl. Security holds down the fan and Axl stomps on him twice before he is dragged off.

I was at this show and it smoked. Best GNR I have seen (I haven't been able to see them in 2006-07  YET)

So they played "Don't Cry"?  Big deal!  Ron's been playing that song for almost a year now.  I'd be more excited if they played a song we haven't heard before like "Don't Cry (alt. lyrics)".

Just kidding of course.  Maybe something a hater would say, and lord knows there are plenty on this site.  This is awesome.  I had to work today all hungover, which sucked.  But I found out about this during my lunch break, and suddenly my hangover went away, the sun shined a little more brightly, the day just got a whole lot better.  Now that's what I'm talking about!

Ok this is confirmed by many Japanese fans. The crowd went nuts from the start. Axl was in extremely high spirits. many say guns put vr to shame.
after pc, axl said 'domo arigato' and they once retired from the stage. the crowd kept calling guns n roses and then, axl reappeared again and played the whole don't cry with dizzy, ron and frank . during the song axl cried. so did the crowd.

aaww i wish i could wipe his tears away.

He was asking fans what songs they'd like to hear him play during his solo.  "Estranged" may be a bit much though.  Maybe "Yesterdays" or something a little shorter.

So anyone think there's a chance that if Ron now starts playing Estranged during his solo Axl may one day sing that.
Yeah, probably not. But still . . .
He was asking fans what songs they'd like to hear him play during his solo. "Estranged" may be a bit much though. Maybe "Yesterdays" or something a little shorter.

You're probably right about Estranged and tough to sing along, too.

Thanks for posting the link.

His upper register isn't as raspy.

At 3:10 he's like "oh fuck, I haven't sang this way in a while, what the hell do I do?".

But he pulled it off, so props to him.

I don't understand why people are bashed for complaining about the setlist.

There are two whole albums they aren't even using much material off of and I wish they'd throw in some illusion stuff.

I am a GNR Illusion fan. I became a huge fan with the UYI's, not AFD and I am a bigger fan of the UYI GNR and I'd be so excited I'd pass out to hear Civil War, Estranged, Coma.......... Instead of doing all the individual solos, they could do Double talkin Jive and incorporate the band's solos into that song or something.

I would love some more UYI material in the setlist.

WoW! Not to beat a dead horse, but dont cry was truly amazing!  You could definitely hear the emotion in Axl's voice  it sounded very cathartic.  I hope that it is foreshadowing of Axl's desire to let his fans embrace the old missed tracks along with dare I say the new album.

Who saw that one coming?

The crowd really loved every second of the show.

People were being pulled out of the crowd all the time and at one point, Axl had to ask them to take a step back.

Robin went down to the floor during Out Ta Get Me and ended up playing in the pit that goes towards the mixing desk.

The band has obviously gotten tighter since last time I saw them. It's almost scary!

There we go, some negativity.  I asked for it though, so I'll let it slide.  I hear what you're saying.  I really began to love GNR at their UYI days too.  I'd love to hear "Dead Horse", "Breakdown", etc.  But you gotta understand with each of those songs they play people would be clamoring for NEW music.  They can't possibly please EVERYONE with the setlist.  But just within the past year they've given us 3 unexpected gems in "Down On The Farm", "Nice Boys", and "Don't Cry".  It may not be much, but it's a start.  IF they're serious about putting the album out I can forgive them for not playing the Illusions tracks.  But if it's never gonna see the light of day then they might as well blow the lid off the place.  But, as far as we know, Chinese Democracy is still supposed to come out,,,,,,, someday.  So I'll hold off on the criticism for now.

Why is that almost scary ? it would be a shame if they didn't after all these concerts and having the time to play al these songs almost everyday, ain't that just normal development in musicians ?

Just listened to the MP3 of Don't Cry.....Like many others I have been waiting for GNR to play this song again as it's such a powerful, moving piece of music.? Axl picked the perfect way to give the fans a treat last night and a tribute to the legacy of that song and how it's touched people.

Think i'm wrong?? Just look at the outpouring 1 simple (yet awesome) performance of the song brought from all of the fans on this forum.? It was awesome to hear it live again.....and the solo from Bfoot.? F'n AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!? That is a tough Slash solo to add to....as Slash absolutely killed it with that solo, but Bfoot made it his own.

Thanks Axl.

Starting with this tour, Pitman has been doing the backing vocal parts for November Rain and a bunch of other songs.

It's cool that he took time to learn them all - it really adds to the sound.

Easy there killer.  Axl sings "Don't Cry" for the first time in 15 years and you bring up the fact that they still aren't playing a good amount of material from 2 whole albums.  That's what happened.  Read between the lines.  I was half agreeing with you anyway, so chill the F' out!

February 28, 1986 - Hollywood, CA - The first known performance of the song.
October 23, 1987 - New York, NY - Rare performance on the "Appetite For Destruction" tour.
November 17, 1987 - Knoxville, TN - Rare performance on the "Appetite For Destruction" tour.
January 31, 1988 - New York, NY - Acoustic performance.

Hearing? Which ones of the upcoming Japanese shows are you attending?

If you're not going to them, you won't be hearing shit.

Seeing 10000+ Japanese fans go crazy for two hours is proof enough that your song requests aren't really something the majority of fans who actually go to the shows would agree on.....

It's easily the worst vocal  performance of The Blues I've heard and the Better vocal intro is horrible. But the band sound absolutely fucking amazinf, tight and sweet as fuck and then after screaming the shit out of his voice for 2 hours, Axl goes and sings Don't Cry like it's 1986. Crazy.

I haven't heard much of the boots myself so I really can't comment on his voice, BUT nobody's perfect.  Maybe an off night, although I haven't heard anyone who attended the show say he sounded off.  Sometimes those boots don't give a fair representation to what it ACTUALLY sounded like live.

I'll agree with that.  The method of recording often filters some frequencies out and leaves it sounding extremely thin.

Saw them 4 times live last year and each time the vocals were astonishing.  Listening to boots of the same shows afterwards was confusing as they didn't sound like the same performance (quality wise).

I knew surprising fans with a UYI song not played on the normal setlist would be an awesome moment.  Instead, people said I am a whiner and Axl doesn't play one note for me etc.  Now, all the talk is this awesome moment.  Guess I was right!   ;D

Sounds like this leg of the tour is going brilliantly as well! It just keep getting better and better! And to get Dont Cry as well, that is just awesome. You never know we might all hit the jackpot and get Estranged live!!

OK, I've listened to the boot, and they sound fucking awesome.

What really struck me while listening was the "evolution" of the solos from the different parts of the band.  I remember back in '02...the solos all sounded sort of "disjointed".  By that, I don't mean they sounded bad, really, they just didn't all fit together, or (IMHO) fit well with the rest of the show.  They seemed almost out of place.  At the Hammerstein shows, it had improved quite a bit.  Now....it's like they've created perfect set pieces for the show.  The solos SOUND like GnR...know what I mean?

I think that sound, as much as anything else, is the sound of a band "gelling".....of the disparate parts evolving into one greater "whole".  It's just fantastic to hear that.  Not to mention....they're just beautiful pieces of musicianship (and music).

Absolutely, I completely appreciate that. However it is simply weird that on one night Axl can sound like he did at the VMA's i.e. thin, weak and like his voice is basically shot and the next night he can sound like he did at Inland Invasion i.e. like the best of 1993 but with an even greater range and control.

I mean, sometimes in the space of one show he'll go from poor to outstanding. Again on the boot of the 14th (appreciating it being an inaccurate representation of the true sound) he goes from sounding shit hot doing the high and raspy parts of Nightrain to seemingly struggling on Madagascar.

I'm not complaining and the fact is when you're at the show, which is what counts, you don't stand there critiqueing vocals when someone's working their ass off as if it's a studio recording. I'm just observing how odd the disparity is between Axl's good and bad days.

I completely agree with Pilferk's comments about the solos. Although I miss Bucket's spots with 'Lone Sal Bug' and 'Big Sur Mon' from his awesome Colma album, the band have evolved from interruptive solos during the early 2006 shows to something with genuinely enhances the whole show. Magic stuff. It makes you think back to when Richard said years ago that when the new band properly gets out there and gets some miles under their belt they'll be the best live guitar band in their class.

I am not a big fan of their solo guitar spots, but the jams are incredible. They also seem to not be soloing as much as doing small collaborations now-in other words 2-3 bandmembers jamming. Either way, I agree wholeheratedly with Pilferk. The band seems like a true band now. : ok: Now, if they could just get that pesky little record out... :hihi:

I know what you mean and it's EXACTLY what I think. I don't think that in 2002 they sounded like Gn'R... but now they're a hard rock band. I really love their work on Gn'R.

Guns n roses starts at 6:30!!! are pigs flying over there?  :o

I would not be surprised if this were true. As a former resident of Japan, that's been to several concerts there, I can say that I have never seen a show start more than maybe 5 minutes after the scheduled time.  The Japanese crews and venues are always super efficient.  Also Japanese audiences are generally much more positive and respectful than in other places.  Perhaps Axl responds well to these things?

Also a big issue are the trains.  They stop running somewhere around midnight and in Japan if you can't get on that last train, you are basically completely screwed for the night. (and end up having to stay in a capsule hotel: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capsule_hotel lol)

Also nice to hear that they soloed X-Japan's Endless Rain. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OoMoYB0XAb4) Those guys have some good taste. :)

God man... This song brought shivers down my spine...

The lyrics sound probably much better in Japanese (cause in english they sound very cheesy) BUT THE MUSIC IS FUCKIN AMAZING....

And the part where the crowd sings... WOW....

Yeah, the lyrics in English maybe come off as a little to straightforward or blunt? But in Japanese it sounds very poetic.  I wouldn't be surprised if maybe Axl was the one that suggested it since many of X Japan's songs are very November Rain/Estrangedish music wise. Seems like the kind of thing Axl (and people that are fans of GNR's ballads ^_^) would like.

Nice song, but it is VERY much like November Rain, at least structure-wise. Even got the same drum-fill   :D

If there are similarities, then it is coincidental since Endless Rain pre-dates November Rain by a few years.

It was definitely the guitar player, Hide. He died in May of 1998.
