Title: Your opinion on...? (a little game)
Post by: Eclipsed107 on February 16, 2008, 01:50:43 PM
Ok, this is how it works.  I'm going to name a song, then the next poster is going to give his opinion or whatever on the song,  then he's going to name a song, and the next person gives his opinion on that song, and so on.

It can be anything, why you like the song, why you don't, what it means to you, if you have any special memories of it, what the greatest live version is, the first time you heard it, whatever.  Just keep the thread going.  Go as many times as you want, and don't be afraid to list a song that's been listed already.  Also, any Gn'R song will work, from Jungle to Better to Crash Diet.

I'll start the thread off with, Don't Damn Me.

(Love it!, one of the most fun songs on the Illusions. One of the reasons for my favouring number II, as well as being, generally, the type of song that makes me prefer the Illusions over that Appetite that they had for Destruction.)

The above was my original post!, before Leggings beat me to it. Perfect Crime is, err, yeah. Good fun!, again. Solo's alright... I used to really like it, but it doesn't stand out much to me anymore. In context with the rest of the album(s) that is!, of course, it's a great song in it's own right.

So Fine
(My World was just too obvious)

So Fine:

Great song, I first fell in love with it on the Use Your Illusion tour VHS tapes.  I never really liked it until then (same goes with Bad Obsession actually).  Duff has a unique voice, which I would have liked to hear more in some Gn'R songs.  He brings a real punk sound to a somewhat beautiful song.  I love the line about the stars.

Mr. Brownstone

Title: Re: Your opinion on...? (a little game)
Post by: Eclipsed107 on February 16, 2008, 03:37:23 PM
Brownstone is one of those songs that no Gn'R fan can dislike.  It's got a fun drum intro, it's got awesome guitar work by Slash and Izzy, awesome solos.  Axl really hits the nail on the head with his vocals in it.  It's just an awesome song.  One of the best hard rock songs of the 80's, and most non fans don't even know about it.  IMO Mr. Browstone is one of those songs where, it's not a hit, so the outside public doesn't really know about it, but it means just as much to Gn'R fans as the hits do.  One of those songs I could never get sick of.

Never really liked Paul's version...but GN'R's really rocks! Plus, it's one of the few songs (I think) that is 10 times better live than on the record...although I could get used to seeing it rested to make room for some more original material.

Well, since this is a GN'R board I think we should stick with GN'R stuff.  However, I'll say that I love "Jump".  It sounded great when I saw VH live a couple of months ago.

"T.W.A.T." is an epic song, sweeping and ambitious as hell.  It sounds like an evolution of a song like "Estranged" mixed in with some different influences.  During the verses, I can't help but think of Radiohead, particularly because of the beat.  It almost feels to me like OK Computer-era Radiohead with the beat.  I love that the verses show off a different part of Axl's vocal range and I love the lyrics.  The chorus, although not a traditional big-hook-sing-a-long chorus, rocks hard with that biting, distorted guitar part.  The solo's are brilliant from Robin's more lyrical and mellow to Bucket's amazing outtro solo that I think should it stay on the final version of the song, will rank as one of the greatest solos on a GN'R song ever.  I love the song.  It is masterful.

As Angel Down said, "Civil War".

Back Off Bitch: Not one of the best songs on the UYI albums (I tend to hit the skip button)
The song contains some good guitar work and a good overall vibe.
The lyrics I find somewhat basic.

Nightrain

One of my alltime Fav's. Blew my mine at 13 years old in '88. The song made me want to get a tattoo, get drunk and get laid. I only accomplished two of those things and paid for both, literally.

Should ALWAYS be part of their live set! Along with Rocket Queen, this (IMO) is just as classic as SCOM, WTTJ and PC from AFD (wow...that's a lot of initials, LOL). Love listening to Nightrain on a Friday afternoon, just waiting to crack open a cold one in a few hours time. Live version's ending should have been recorded for the album, I think. Bringing it back to '...loaded like a freight train...' really makes the song come full circle rather than fading out on the original album version.

Since I mentioned it...Rocket Queen (or has that been chosen yet)?

Edit: Whoops...nevermind.

So would you guys please make it somewhat interesting and add a bit to your posts? Instead of just "It's a great song" you could explains a bit about why you think so? Maybe you have a special memory attached to the songs?  Etc etc.

Thanks.

The blues is a song I could listen to each minute, each hour.
I gives me a feeling of hope (i do not know why)
The lyrics all seem to be right. and in the right places.
I can relate to many lines of this song.
The piano intro it's very unique.
it's beautiful.

It's a song where I can rest my eyes and think of nothin' or go out of my body and just nothin...

Sweet Child of Mine - classic song.  This was the song that first introduced me to GnR, a long..long time ago.  I thought it was one of the greatest songs I'd ever heard and that GnR were destined to become the next Stones or Zep.   Today, hearing it, doesn't have quite the same feeling, but I still enjoy it, none the less.  Very poetic writing.

The Asshole Song.

I always wondered if this was an actual song or just something Axl threw together as an intro.  I always loved how Gn'R put so many intros to their songs live, but to me nothing will beat It's Alright as an intro to November Rain, thankfully that made the Live Era cd.  But back to the Asshole song, the underlining music is so beautiful, I hope one day we get a studio recording of the song.  I doubt it'll be on Chinese Democracy or any forthcoming album, but it would be awesome to have as a b-side or whatever.  One can only wonder if it's written after someone, if it has more lyrics, how long it is.  Axl sure is a good piano player.

I'm confused on what you did here, you're supposed to talk about the song above you, not any song in the post?  Anyway, I'll respond to Feel the Burn.

Coma

I remember when I first bought the Illusions and got home to play them, I was looking over the track listing and saw the Coma was the longest song on the discs.  It was the first song I went to play because I had never heard of it and it seemed like it would be an epic.  It surprised me, I was expecting November Rain or Estranged, but was much more pleased with the result.  The song is epic, but it's 100% rock and roll.  The ending is amazing, Axl delivers some of his best vocals and Slash nails the guitar, it's just perfect.  The perfect ending to Use Your Illusion 1.  The perfect ending to any cd, and I'll never forget the first time I listened to it.

Locomotive.. for leatherebel. :)

Locomotive:  I've related to this song quite a bit, and even though I prefer UYI I over II, songs like this and Breakdown really showed the strong lyrics on that CD.  The whole song is awesome, but I've always ADORED the outro.  I can't really put it into words, but you know what I mean, right?

excellent tune whcih somes up the vibe of appetite for destruction really well. Insane paranoia and a fuck you attititude. I suppose it reflects the recurring theme that axl is new in town (L.A) and is struggling top cope with life and  feels invaded by others around, until he can't take it anymore and cracks the fuck up!

on a presonal note thsi is the first GnR tune i learned to play on guitar because the intro was so easy, same notes a smoke on the water....almost.

mmmmmmmmmm.......something obscure....

The Garden. Cool song, w/ creepy lyrics.. The video was kind of weak. As though someone took a camcorder through the city. Some cool shots of the band though.. Alice Cooper sounds good in it as well..
So Fine...Never liked it until I saw GN'R play it live..Now I love some of Axl's best sounding vocals..Perhaps because it follows Duff.. Sorry I broke the rules by giving my opinion on the song..Anyone else?

Considering Duff never wrote many songs solo in GN'R, it's a decent first attempt. It's got some quite emotive lyrics and shows a different side to Duff's personality..............

'You Could Be Mine'

Title: Re: Your opinion on...? (a little game)
Post by: Eclipsed107 on February 18, 2008, 03:11:55 PM

'You Could Be Mine'

You Could Be Mine is a personal favorite.

I'll actually never forget the first time I heard it.  This goes along with the story I just provided up above with Coma.

Ok, so I had Appetite and Lies, but I didn't have the Illusions yet.  I knew some songs off of them, November Rain, Live and Let Die, KOHD, but I didn't know much else off of them.

I remember I was going somewhere with my mom (she was driving, I wasn't of age yet) and the song came on the radio.  I remember liking the drum intro, but when the guitar came in I was shocked.  Listening to it I remember thinking "I have to know who this is and go out and buy this cd!"  It was amazing, so fresh.  Then Axl's vocals kicked in, and I remember saying to myself "oh my god, is this Gn'R?"

I was blown away.  I thought I knew all the hits, but there was this one tremendious song out there calling me in.  Later that week I went out and bought both Illusion albums.  So YCBM will always have a special place in my heart, and it's truly one of my favorite Gn'R songs.  In the UYI mix that I made (that I leave in my car from time to time) it's the opening track, and it's a shame that they never used it as an opening track.  I'd love to hear it as the opening song next time Axl tours with Gn'R.

Right Next Door to Hell

Post by: Smoking Guns on February 18, 2008, 04:21:41 PM
Right Next Door To Hell, this is a song that took a long time for me to enjoy.  Not because it was bad, but there were so many great songs on illusions.  This song is heavy, very bass heavy.  I think now it was a great intro to UY1.  Its sets the stage that this is a different GNR.  Not the Appetite sound.  I love how the drums and guitars build the anticipation.  Then the whole band is joined in.  Axl sounds great on this tune.  Its just a good heavy, kind of metal, sounding song. Sorum really brought a heavy drum sound!

Ain't it Fun

One of the best cover versions of another band's song I've heard.
Captures the energy, emotion and the spirit of the original so well while adding a distinct GNR sound to it.
Before I listened to it for the first time in about 1997 I wasn't sure what to expect since it was a "popular" hard rock band covering an obscure punk song but I was surprised and blown away. I was always a 'standard' fan of GNR, meaning I knew a handful of their songs and appreciated them, but when I heard this cover I went and checked out more of their music, and as they say, it's never been the same since.

my favoriate song, every good band/singer has a protest song, black sabbath, country joe & fish, bob dylan....etc etc

the song has a lot of robin hood sentiment and rebellion with a sweet sadness and I love it. it is the one song I had wished axl would have sang when he toured recently.... :(

I remember hearing My Michelle in high school.  At the time it was one of the darkest songs I had ever heard.  "you daddy watches porno" line had such a sinister feel to it.  I felt like Axl was singing from the back corner of a closet in some cockroach-infested trailer.  When I first bought AFD, this was easily my favorite song.  It was also at the beginning of the second side of the cassette...so it was the easiest to rewind and relisten to.

Not much going on lyrically, but the Buick, Buick, Buick Mcane sounds soooo Cool!! I'm going to pull out the SI and listen to it today!!!!
How about
Loud Love!
As the liner notes suggest a great song can be found anywhere.
I suggest picking up a copy of this classic SoundGarden album. It's when they rocked before they became "Grunge".

I'm assuming then that the queue for the next song to discuss was "Down on the Farm"..

Anyway, cool cover version. I guess I can only echo my comments that I made earlier regarding "Ain't it Fun".
Another unexpected cover version of an obscure punk song which greatly increased my interest in the band outside the "popular" songs that I knew.

Epic in a lot of ways (and sadly the song that probably was the beginning of the end).  I rarely play it because I prefer the harder stuff most of the time.

Oh my god

Yeah, I was waiting for somebody to come out with this.

It was a special moment experiencing the release of a new Guns N Roses song.
Awesome song, very underrated, unfortunately though the potential of the song was defeated by the production, or lack of.
The sound is too muddy. The drums don't really drive the song as they should, they are too low in the mix.
The guitars are present but I felt they could have been more defined to give the song more edge particularly in the chorus.
A great song though.

If the song had the same kind of attention as the rough mixes of the new songs which leaked, then it would be perfect.

Your Crazy (from LIES)

I think the LIES version of Your Crazy is vastly superior to the Appetite version.  There's just something about the guitar work on this song that makes me love it so much.  In fact the whole b-side of Lies is amazing.. but this song anchors it IMO.  Listening to the song structure, the guitar, the vocal line, it's hard to imagine that the boys thought it would be a good idea to change it into the Appetite version.  I do however like the Appetite version, it's just that the Lies version is a stand out song in my opinion, one of their best, where the Appetite version just kind of struggles to get noticed on AFD.

Your Crazy (from AFD)

Your Crazy (AFD):
More approriate for AFD..Imagine the slower version, may have thrown off the whole feel for the album..Much faster paced...Back in 1987/1988 not many songs had Fuck in 'em...Much so repeated as frequently as does Your Crazy, It's so Easy, and lets not forget Out to Get Me, and Mr. Brownstone.  AFD has to be the 1st highly commercially succesful album w/ the Parental Advisory warning on it.

TWAT

There Was A Time is my favorite of all the new songs.  This song is what Gn'R is all about in my opinion, it's just epic.  I love the old intro, but I love the new intro even more.  That piano into is hauntingly awesome.  And then when the verses kick in?  Axl's voice is stupendous.  The verses in TWAT are some of Axl's best singing ever, and that's saying a lot.  The chorus isn't my favorite part of the song, but when you get to the almost gospel sounding "there was a time, didn't want to it all, didn't want to know it all, and I don't want to know it now" it just puts the song over the top for me.  Just hauntingly brilliant.  Axl's cries during the long epic solos are amazing... and speaking of the long epic solos, they're just captivating.

TWAT is just a brilliant song, a beautiful peice of art, and Axl is really depriving the people of true beauty by not releasing Chinese Democracy and this song to the world.  Oh and the new ending is fantastic.

After hearing numerous live versions prior to UYI I was expecting Axl to have one of his pattented screams before the Slash solo.Instead it was a scream w/ some sought of vocal dubbing. This is one of my (many) all time favorite songs, and I love GnR's rendition of it.  Yeah, from "Give me a little bit of volume on this", to the way they speed it up at the end, to the "Daytripper solo" at the end.  They definitely gave it the hardass edge that this song so deserves and is.  I always turn the volume WAY up when listening to this one!

The original 'New Rose' is an absolute classic, and was the first officially recognised UK punk single, and i've had the luck of seeing the Damned play live twice, and they RULE!!!  It isn't bad production, it's just a very very raw sound.....

One In A Million

Title: Re: Your opinion on...? (a little game)
Post by: LIGuns on February 26, 2008, 08:44:02 AM
I remember hearing for the 1st time while opening packs of baseball cards..Although not the 1st time I heard the words NIGGER and FAGGOTS, it was the 1st time I heard them in a song. I was shocked and I remember rewinding it on the TAPE RECORDER to confirm what I had heard.
Months later the ENQUIRER ran a story (probably fake), on how the KKK endorsed GN'R because of One in a Million.
I also recall them being shunned from an AIDS benefit show at NYC's Radio City Music Hall because of the song. Ironically in 1991/1992 GN'R would film Nov. Rain at that very venue!
On the famous Eddie Trunk interview Axl speaks about the resistence he originally encountered from the organizers and Elton John at the Freddie Mercury show.
One in Million has yet to be pulled from LIES..It's not a classic GN'R song and I'm glad it has mostly been forgotten instead of being their legacy.
The real shame is how all the critics picked on them for a few lines, we know what they are, and forgot the line: "Radical and Racists, don't point your fingers at me, I'm just a small town white boy trying to make ends meet".

Not sure what the "current" live version would be, but I'm basing this on a show from 2006.  First, GnR's version of KOHD (in any era) is the most awesome, hands down, in my book, anyway.  More recent version   -  Axl gives a much more soulful version of it.   He stopped doing the "I, I, I, I, I" in between, which was sort of irritating, but I find myself wanting to sing it, anyway, because I'm so used to it.  Liked it.

As for "It Tastes Good" Lynn you are perverted!! I've forgotten about this GN'R rap gem..I had it on bootleg prior to the UYI Tokyo Rocket Queen version..I think Axl states he blew out his voice on the Maiden tour singing it..Very funny song always wondered if it was a GN'R original..

Nice Boys is a great number, they really nail the mood of the song and when I'm at the gym and this comes on, it still makes me feel 20 years old and get pumping that iron to the point of injury. I remember hearing AFD for the 1st time and thinking ISE couldn't be the same singer as WTJ. I was also not 100% convinced Nightrain was sang by the same guy either. It's So Easy is a song anyone should feel comfortable singing..Not much screaming just that cool high tone (baritone?) voice going..Even Weiland feels comfortable singing it (just kidding VR rocks!). It was a great opener in the day (Ritz) and a totally unique tune to this day.

The first line is so killer , I just love how Axl says it. Intro always made me think of " I want candy" lol which is ironic thinking of the real song meaning lol. Great use of the Wah pedal , the riff is a classic case of Izzy coming up with something and Slash making it his own. I love the live ending on Tokyo! All over killer track

The Live Era mix of Your Crazy is probably my favorite version.  Since it's the Lies version it's already the superior version of it, but I think the electric guitars just add a hard rock feel to an already awesome song.  To me, this sounds like the way it should have been on AFD, and I would have loved to hear the slower version of Your Crazy recorded with electric guitars.  It would have been a whole different kind of beast!

Actually Your Crazy on LIES is electric guitars..
Nov. Rain: Great epic song....I remember the bootlegs being around long before UYI..To hear the polished version was compared to the early demos is mind blowing..Sought of makes the anticipation for the leaks that more exciting..I remember seeing GN'R at Nassau Colliseum (LI ,NY) in June 1991 before UYI was reeased..After playing Nov. Rain Axl asked how many peope have already heard that song..After a loud reaction from the crowd Axl responded "I guess the more new songs we play the more Bootleg albums we sell".

Perfect Crime is awesome, love the really fast flowing lyrics, its a real headbanger too!! it just ends suddenly too. The band were supposed to put out a movie in the 90s too called Perfect Crime, it was supposed to be a biographical film starring the band members, wonder what happened to the production of it. Probably seemed irrelevant after steven left

SFTD...nice to see SOMEONE (let alone one of my favorite bands) cover this song and NOT do a straight forward cover of it! GN'R's version certainly applies a new pace to the song. It sounds like much more of an 'autobiographical' song (eg: from the 'devil's' POV) with Axl behind the mic. I love the Stones original...especially LIVE! But GN'R's version has so much charisma behind it, it's as if Lucifer himself hired 'em to do a lounge act with some attitude in tribute to yours truly on his birthday, LOL!

Very underrated among fans, IMO. Would love to hear it replace LALD or KOHD in a live set.

Been a while since I visited this thread...if it hasn't been chosen too many times already...how 'bout 'Coma.'

this is a fucking awesome song!!!!!!

i think it could explain the phenomenon "brown noise" as people will literally shit themselves when they hear it.

I'm really interested to hear what happens with the guitarts in the chorus. from the versions that I'm sure we've all heard, there is one in which the guitars are mid-high notes, and another which is low and dark sounding. personally i hope that they are both included and mixed together.

the real point to consider when listening to this song is that it is a DEMO!!! imagine what the Real thing will sound like!!!!!

to me the song a journey taken in a relationship, or success and failure. It may be autobiographical for axl, of how the band were successfula nd had everything they wanted and then just rested on their laurels, or how it was better when they had nothing...

"that keep you locked up sitting pretty,
on a pedestal of men
and now you're sleeping like an angel

Rhiad:
The  beggining reminds me of Zeps Immigrant Song..Live, vocally it has been tough to follow..I consider myself fortunate to be at the event on New Years 2000/2001 to see Axl's 1st concert in nearly 8 years where this song was revealed..I thought they only playyed it here and in Rio a 2002 afew weeks later. I was just watching a bootleg from Detroit Nov. 2002 and was shocked that it was played there as well..I must have missed it when I was checking the set lists daily...
Down on the Farm: Love the english accent Axl uses. Also made me find out that a SHANTY is an english drink(beer and lemonade)..

LOVE "Down on the Farm"
Live from "Farm Aid" is best.
Axl sings it like

He sings the classic
"I Don't Care About You".  GREAT!
How 'bout "Rocket Queen"??

Double Talkin' Jive: Sometimes I'm not convinced it's Axl singing..The classical guitar is a bit long but adds to the song..Always loved the rants and added lyrics live...

Live and Let Die: Makes McCartney's sound outdated..A great live song..

Live and let die is pretty good, but i honestly think it seems like 'filler' material which could have been left out, since the UYI albums were long enough without a few of the 'filler' songs (e.g Bad Apples; my world; you ain't the first)

Next up: Shotgun Blues

Shotgun Blues: Never one of my favorites..
Cool lines:Me...I gotta lot to learn
An I'm still waitin' for the heads to turn
You say I walk a line
Fuck they move it every time
You walk a mile in my shoes
And then you tell me 'bout singin' the blues
You get what you pay for
An freedom's real high priced

Not so cool lines:
An while your rippin' off children
Somebody's fuckin' your wife

And then I'll put you
In your motherfuckin' place
And you...you can suck my ass
An I think it's so low class
Me...I'm just so concerned
I'm still waitin' for your ass to burn
Ooooh you want a confrontation
I'll give you every fuckin' chance
With your verbal masturbation

Patience

Patience- perfect song to play for a girl you're seeing. Every gf I've had has become addicted to it. GNR song writing at it's finest.
