What "Better" needs is a big radio airplay push.

Obviously, the more the song is heard over free radio airwaves, the chances of the single's success brighten.

In my area, I haven't heard the song on any stations besides WAAF.

Better was only sent to SOME radio stations.  Of course, lots of stations are now playing multiple tracks from CD, but on Tuesday the official single will be sent to ALL stations.  I'm assuming that's how it all breaks down.

Ah that makes more sense, so release actually means 'promo release to radio' - hopefully that will mean a week or two of playlisting on radio and then at least a digital 'single' release (ideally physical with b side).

I still don't get the approaches - to generate interest in the uk, you need airplay, and then you need a single to chart on the official top 40. ChiD didn't achieve its potential cuz it was a download only release - the UK chart is determined by sales only - digital and physical (it used to be just physical). So now you often get a digital release one week before a physical release which makes the song enter fairly low, then peak on the second week when the physical release sales are added....

I think your right!!  I think we here did a lot to get Chinese Democracy out and played as much as possible on the radio.  Now obviously, it wasn't just us..lol  But I know I called a few times and asked for it or said how much I liked it.   I think we should do the same for "Better", and song that in my mind is indeed Better than CD and a song that will appeal to a lot more people.   I think we shouldn't let up because the album is out and push this baby hard!!!  We should request this as much as possible and get it played!!

I expect it'll turn up around the same time as 'Axl's press release that he's been working on'.  ::)

My 15 about to turn 16 year old daughter, who rolls her eyes and leaves the room when I put on Chinese Democracy, LOVES Better.

She's into whatever teenagers are into these days, which at the moment is the book Twilight.

Kids now a days spend 1.99 for the videos on itunes.

My 7 year old daughter, on the other hand, LOVES the entire CD record.  Go figure.  When I play it she hums the whole time.  I actually would rather she not hum, so I can hear the music itself, but my appreciation for her actually liking the album leads me to put up with the humming.

Kids are where the money is these days when it comes to selling music.  Adults are too busy stressing about the economy.

First thing I did when my 9 yr old daughter came home the day I got CD was plop the headphones on her and make her listen to This I Love :hihi:

She LOVES Better, more then any other song.  She sings it all the time (badly, unfortunately, I had to coach her on how to sing the intro/outro :hihi: )

okay, so i didn't hear it on the radio.  but maybe it's a slow burner.  it's one of those singles that people will have to listen to about 30 times before they start to get really hooked.  but it DOES hook people.  just look at all of us on the board -- we love it!  if it sucked, we wouldn't love it.  so there.  we've just got to do our part and call all the radio stations, email all the dj's, and we can't be afraid to get aggressive about it.  it's up to us to convince people of how great this music is.  axl needs us now more than ever people!

But the reality is that the radio plays what the labels want them to play.  So if UMG leans on the radio stations, Better will get into heavy rotation.  It's that simple

in all honesty nobody listen's to the radio anymore, besides Sirius/XM.  I think once a video hits the airwaves it will be huge !

i think most people listen to the radio (UK), maybe they dont listen at home but its on in most workplaces, shops, in the car etc..
I myself dont listen to it at home, but i have it on in the car to check travel etc and its always on at work

I think it's a diffrent situation in America than it is oversea's.  More Rock fan's and more international fan's appericate good music, when in the U.S. crap get's played over and over again on MTV.  I don't even listen to the radio, cause it has nothing that I wanna listen to.

The days of video's are dead. No one makes big budget video's that catch attention anymore. If they make a video it'll be performance style like everything else and not very groundbreaking. There's no way Universal would pay millions on a video these days.

Yeah big buget video's. I wouldn't say your common music video isn't dead. I think in order to reach a new fan base is to make music video's.  I know Metallica's video was played on Fuse, On Demand.  AC/DC was on Vh1 and classic, I still think there's a target to be reached by a music video. It doesn't half to be November Rain but it can be something cool and balls to the wall.  I perfectly fine with a live performance video, which would be cool.

Videos are a useful tool for news shows covering a big album too... Take that BBC discussion... That was a long enough piece that they would almost certainly have shown a new video/a nice chunk of it. Not so much with a live version of a new song or a homemade youtube style collage.

GNR and the fans bouncing to the song together makes a great enough video. ;D

Not sure what to make of that.  That comment was made eary this morning (now yesterday morning) and seemingly nothing came of it.  Has anyone else seen such a commercial or was this commercial exclusive to that one person? 

yeas we need a video, why people keep saying that videos are not important anymore? of course they are , all bands keep doing them, and yes we all know that mtv its a pice of shit , but it seems that a lot of people watch it.

I was one of those people saying videos were no longer important (and I still don't think they're AS important), but I'd be willing to admit I'm wrong.  I'd love to see SOMETHING from this lineup in video form.  So I'd gladly take it.  Still not buying the VH1 commercial though.

Chinese Democracy has been removed from the radio 1 playlist - better has not been added onto it. Keep an eye on the radio 1 playlist page to see if it gets added.

Some of the rock stations around here are playing "I.R.S." in addition to "Better", which is cool. Most of the on-air jocks have had good things to say about the album in general.

WAAF played several times today

Aweosme, hope it picks up. AAF really is the best station in Boston. I was leaning towards BCN for a while but...

They just played "There Was A Time" on Sirius Octane.  I heard "Sorry" on there the other night too.  And of course they're playing "Chinese Democracy" and "Better".  The DJ on now, Bodhi, said they've also been playing "Scraped", "Shackler's Revenge", and "I.R.S." but I've yet to hear any of those songs on there.

I consistently hear CD and TWAT on Octane.  I haven't heard the other songs.

I'm not saying they don't play the other songs, I'm just saying that those two are the only Chinese Democracy songs I have personally heard on Octane.

I don't even listen to the radio. I just listen to the cd itself lol. I get to avoid all that other garbage they have on there.

Just browsed through the "recently played" on 97.7 htz FM in Toronto... and they ran "If The World" a little after midnight!

Can only say ive herd CD once on the chris moyles show, and better 1once on sara cox.

My own opinion is that scraped should have been the nxt single, no need to be edited and it has that f**k you attitude everyone loves. Then wup out this i love or street of dreams or possibly b-side one of them like oasis did with Acquiesce. 

If its getting played on radio 1 then it will probably be added to the next playlist update.

better should go down well, everyone i know that has the album digs better - men and women alike. even people who have bad feeling about axl and it not being real gnr etc... they still like the song.

I agree, it seems like everyone does love Better!   I coach college baseball and two years ago I played the leaked version of Better in a van on a road trip.  The few guys in the van liked it so much that they wanted a copy.  Within two weeks, it was blaring in their locker room before and after games with pretty much everyone liking it.  Pretty cool that it appeals to the college crowd!!

...that site keeps track of how many spins each song is getting at Radio. CD is falling hard in every format (Rock, Active Rock, and Alternative). No Alternative stations have picked up Better and it only gained 13 plays nationwide in Active Rock.

I quiet like the edit I just heard from the radio1 iplayer! If this song's gonna get uk radio play, I think it stands a better chance now.

When Sweet child is played on radio 2 or local commerical radio, the radio edit still gets played as opposed to album track. Its very rare that you'll ever hear a track over 4 mins and it does seem to be that stations are more reluctant to play tracks over 4mins.

May I ask what the edited version sounded like?  What was taken out?  Just wondering.  I hate when songs are edited, but I realize why they do it, oh well.

I still think Better is the best song off of CD when it comes to broad "cross-demographics" appeal.  That's not a shot at the song either, because it's a kick-ass song no doubt.   :peace: 

you get about 2 bars of the riffing mid8 before axl starts the screaming/shouting vocals.
Then it cuts straight into the "All that I wanted was...now i know you better" bit before fink's solo
The outro is edited slightly as well - the "ah's" aren't set up before the final verse kicks in.
Its actually quite a good edit as edits go imho - the song flows without the synth breakdown (which i was never too keen on) and shouty lyrics (which i loved but can understand why they were removed as they might 'scare' some more casual listeners off)

There are definitely grassroots hits once in a while that come without any major label push but they're not the norm, especially not nowadays

UMG already got $14 million from Best Buy so they don't have much incentive to pour promo money into this project anymore, at least in the US

on 93.3 WMMR in philly, they have not really been playing Better that i've noticed.

But CD remains in their regular rotation, and they continue to play the old hits as well.

and kinda interesting is that late night they occasionally other tracks from the album. they played TWAT last night during the 11pm hour, and they played Catcher this morning during the 4am hour.

A couple of them probably have.  But for more people to buy this album, Axl is going to have to perform some of the songs on some shows (Grammy's, late night, etc) in my opinion.  That shit sells!!!!

Yeah they played a little bit of it earlier on Monday Night Countdown before going to commercial as well.

Something else: Last friday evening, our poker evening among friends, I let my Friends listen to CD and about the song 'Better' they stated that this is a 'typical american song' which will be a success in the States but not in Europe.... Is there something as 'typical american type of rock'??

Maybe certain songs only become hits in certain countries. Not necessarily because only people in that country like the song.

It could simply be because the song was featured in a popular TV series in that country or something similar....



But GN'R is a global band.

WRIF is playing it about once a day (mid-day and evenings).  And they're playing CD about twice a day (anytime outside of am).  So, GNR is getting a tiny little bit of lovin'.

Wow. I listen to WRIF alot and I have yet to hear Better. I'm not doubting you I'm just saying I must miss it all the time. I've heard CD several times since the Better single came out and it always bums me out.

Better is continuing to climb the airplay charts, seems like the grass roots approach is actually working fairly well at least for the time being

Grassroots in some ways seems the way to go. Once the hype's died down, casual listeners will be able to appreciate the music for what it is.

Haven't heard it but I only listen to music radio once in a blue moon.  I've requested Better and CD at KROQ.com a number of times though

Every now and then I check KROQ and STAR to see if they play any GN'R.  I've heard CD a bunch of times, but haven't heard Better yet.

We can request, but when idiot DJ's like Nicole Alvarez say they refuse to play new GN'R songs because they "suck" there is not much we can do.

It's currently at #25 on the rock charts.  It's been moving up about 5 spaces a week since it was released

I see it at #16 on Mainstream Rock and #25 on Active Rock.  It is moving up pretty well.  Hopefully that will have a somewhat stabilizing effect on the album sales.

A video might help a bit but I don't know anyone who actually watches videos except on youtube.

                   All it needs is to make it to VH1 and get pushed for their Top 20 countdown. It helped Kid Rock. It will help this album. The more plays it gets on TV the more it can help.

YouTube is actually now streaming HD quality video (not high, but HD), so I think it would be pretty good even in there.

Would just like to have a video on Comcast On Demand.  I view the "Day that Never Comes" video a couple times a week.  I live about 1/2 way between Philly and Baltimore, and did hear Better on 98Rock (Baltimore) today, but have not heard it on a Philly station yet.

The video theory is right, even though videos aren't what they used to be in the glory days of MTIV/VH1 and pre-Internet immediacy, the impact would still prove helpful for maintaining hardcore fan interest and appealing to new fans, and regaining their spot in the public, American conscience.
I remember when SCOM video came out everyone was mesmerized by their "ultimate rock band image." Gnr have always been just as much about the perfect rock n roll image as the perfect rock n roll sound. Very rarely does a band have the perfect image to back up bad ass rock music, Gnr did. Most bands today focus on the image and how they are perceived in the media, but their music either sucks or is mediocre at best. The bad ass image of Gnr was reinforced by the bad ass music everyone was hearing on the radio. The two were a perfect match. Everyone was like, "Finally, a band that looks right and sounds right." A lot of bands had a good sound, but didn't look right, etc.

The new lineup needs to reintroduce themselves to the masses. They, like the old lineup, just have a "rock n roll look" about them that the general public could easily fall in love with all over again.  The masses need to see that Gnr is  a real band. They need to see Axl smiling and having fun, some live footage of the guys joking, laughing, smiling, visiting cities, touring the world, drinking Cokes, smoking cigarettes, picking guitars, warming up for shows,  doing sound tests in stadiums, hanging out with girlfriends/wives/dogs, signing autographs, wearing rock T shirts, getting off of airplanes, etc. The masses will see their close bond, band unity, and above all, friendship. Hell, the new band has 8-9 years of live footage that would be perfect for a reintroduction video. Part of the reason the masses fell in love with the old band is because their videos gave them the since that Gnr was a "pack of good ol boys" making amazing rock music together.

The masses need to see a happy, confident Axl. An Axl who has a "band" and not just some hired musicians. Like it or hate, image was always a part of the Gnr package, so a video is necessary.

Even if people don't watch videos anymore I think a new Guns N' Roses video would be novel enough to get some attention. This is such a great beautiful catchy hard rocking song that I would be stunned if it doesn't catch on.
