This is the largest crowds they've played for (solo not festival) since 93. You brazilians are great and loyal except when it comes to soccer, it's time to let someone else win.

RIO just CANCELLED - PLEASE,INFORM YOUR FRIENDS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE!!

ATTENTION: The March 14th Guns N' Roses show in Rio De Janeiro at Apoteose Stadium has been officially canceled for this evening due to the stage collapsing because of heavy rains. Stay tuned for more info and possible rescheduling information as we receive it.
There is a possibility the show may be rescheduled for tomorrow night March 15th or at a later date. There fortunately are no fatalities but there are injuries from both our camp and Rio crews the extent of which is not known at present. The Rio Fire Dept is evacuating crews out of the venue to avoid further injuries with the heavy rains and winds. Details are just coming in. Also a truck w/part of The Sebastian Bach Band's gear has rolled on the trip from Sao Paulo to Rio what is our understanding several times and we are awaiting details on the safety of the driver at this time. Thank you for your understanding and please be safe out there. Thank you. Axl Rose-

I'm glad to hear all injuries are minor.I saw a guy all the way up last night fixing something near the roof of the stage and it looked terrifying. It is very, very high. These guys work really hard to put all that monstrous setting in place for our fun and joy and are rarely given ( by us) all the credits they deserv

this was posted at facebook

Del James  - The stage in Rio collapsed due to a massive thunder storm. Doors to the stadium had not yet opened to the public so no fans were inside when the stage collapsed. The band was not at the venue when this occurred The earliest reports lead us to to believe that there may have been casualties and serious injuries. Th...ankfully that was not the case. Everyone in the GNR crew are shaken up but doing fine. We will keep everyone posted as more information comes in but the most important thing is that everyone, GNR as well as local crew and stage hands, are alive and well.

Just came from Apoteose... i feel incredibly sad...

i was waiting for the show since 5 PM. Bought a coat for the rain, got completely wet and freezed (yeah, it turned really cool when the heavy rain felt down, and there was a very intense wind also.

Now, all i need, all i want, all i pray, is the band reschedules the show for tomorrow. Otherwise im fucked up, so do all the money i put to do this trip.

While i was making the line outside the venue, the rain was very heavy and so do the wind, but i would have never, by any chance, imagined what was happening with the stage. People from the neighbourhood were singing, playing football under the rain, and the overall vibe was really great. The rain was making the day attractive in some way, because it was very hot before it started raining. Trust me, i would have never imagined what was happening with the stage. No fan got injured or hurt, i saw no ambulances or people being assisted.

A guy from the organization, using a megaphone, said the show was cancelled and that the date could be rescheduled. Thats all.

I saw a lot, a real lot of people crying, dont wanting to leave the area, expecting some kind of miracle, like an announce of ?the show will happen later, you just have to wait?. Because, when the guy with the megaphone said the show was cancelled, there was no rain anymore. Anyway, it is still raining right now, and i really feel like a dead body.

All i ask to God, the band, whoever responsible of setting the new date, is... tomorrow. They have to think about people who has travelled from very far. I can attend the show tomorrow, i could attend the 16th (but there is a date in porto alegre), but if they reeschedule the date to a later moment, im fucked up.

RIO UPDATE: All injuries appear to be minor. There were originally radio reports of a fatality which has fortunately turned out to be false. Initial reports are that our staging is for the most part ok but a more accurate assessment is being made. No word yet on if the show will be moved to tomorrow the 15th or another night. Reportedly Baz's truck driver is ok as well. Thank you again for your understanding.

i know this doesnt depend on Axl nor any person of the crew. Problems with the stage and the equipment could have been big.

But re-scheduling the date for tomorrow will be the best of the options. Booking one extra night in rio could be done for a few reais, and I would change my airplane tickets if it was necessary, but there will be a lot of fans who have traveled from very far that will not be able to attend if the show is rescheduled for a later date.

Im really shocked with what happened to the stage and the equipment. No one in being outside, waiting to enter, could have imagined that at all.

Got home now... Saw the exact moment the stage collapsed, meters away from our line.

Just want to share how sad I feel right now... for me, for the band, crew (Saw an ambulance speeding on the street where the premium floor line was), for all the fans that have been waiting for 9 years like me, following the band with passion every single day through HTGTH and other boards/sites... it hurts deeply.

There's nothing worst for a musician to be taken the chance to play for the fans.
I imagine how Axl and the guys feel right now.

That situation was just beyond anyone's imagination.

Really hope every fan got home OK, hope the crew is fine now, and that the show can be rescheduled  for tomorrow, cause there are many fans from other states of Brazil, and even from other coutries. I'm from Rio, but, for example, if the show happens on the next saturday, I'll be traveling (until april 10th!), and couldn't attend.

I must also congratulate the organizers that took the right decision to prevent fans from entering the venue earlier.
They avoided a big tragedy.. just check the photos. I could be dead now.

Well, good luck to everyone, and a quick recover for the eventually injured. Take care.

I was there. It was crazy! Truly a day when everything was supposed to go wrong. For instance: the bus I took to go to the venue had to stop in the middle of Brasil Av. because there was a gunshot fire, in the middle of the highway, when two gangs from Flamengo and Vasco (footbal teams that played today, at Maracanã) crossed eachother's way, so they decided to take a few shots and stop the traffic on the biggest highway of the city. But let's not focus on the negativity... ::)

No one in line could imagine what happaned, and I'm glad the gates weren't open sooner, otherwise we might have had a bigger tragedy. Usually the gates are open around 5pm, luckly today they didn't.

I trully hope this show can be rescheduled, hopefully for tomorrow's night. That way most peole who came from other cities/states/countries can attend to the concert with fewer problems to reprogram their plans!

It was sad to see people crying because the show was canceled... :'(

Jeeez!! What sad news to wake up to!

Thank God the gate weren't opened, and that the fans and (most of) the crew are unharmed!

Fingers crossed for that show can be rescheduled for tomorrow!

I was there. It was crazy! Truly a day when everything was supposed to go wrong. For instance: the bus I took to go to the venue had to stop in the middle of Brasil Av. because there was a gunshot fire, in the middle of the highway, when two gangs from Flamengo and Vasco (footbal teams that played today, at Maracan?) crossed eachother's way, so they decided to take a few shots and stop the traffic on the biggest highway of the city. But let's not focus on the negativity... ::)

Fuck... :o

anyone got hurt?.

I'm a big fan of Universidad Catolica, Chilean team soccer, so I aprecciate the info, now I know I must be prepared when Flamengo fans come to Chile  :hihi:

I would think it'd be tough to repair all that in one day anyway.  I mean, it'd be great for everyone involved if they could because I know a lot of people traveled and couldn't extend their time away just to see the show if it's re-scheduled for a later date.  But it seemed like wishful thinking to fix everything overnight when the weather was still not cooperating.

In the big picture, it's "just a concert".

We are very fortunate that everybody who was there are alive today. That's the only thing that matters.

I can understand people being upset about there not being a show, but look at what could have happened and suddenly the concert itself doesn't seem that important.

I'm sorry if that offends you.

I know I'll get a bunch of idiots telling me "it's easy for you to say, you get to see multiple concerts".

But people could have fucking died there yesterday!

its ok, Jarmo, i understand what you are saying, and i also think that thank god they never opened the doors and that no one got hurt. How can I feel offended?

Problem is all the surrounding situation... I came to Brazil just to see this show... I really thank God i could attend the Belo Horizonte gig but that was absolutely out of my original plans. I even bought 2 tickets, because the first one i bought was a regular ?field?ticket, and after watching how incredible is to be in the Premium Zone in BH, i just decided to buy a premium ticket for rio. 2 tickets, for nothing, and i cant even ask for my money back because 1) i have to fly to buenos aires tomorrow, 2) my ticket is destroyed by water, 3) i dont know if there is any place to ask for your money back...

anyway, will start to prepair my luggage my for flight to buenos aires tomorrow, while waiting for a miracle to pop up. Im doing my best not to cut my veins and go on with life with a smile. Hope the Montevideo and Buenos Aires shows occur normally... so far, i decided to go to 2 shows... Belo Horizonte > shortest setlist ever, Rio de Janeiro > minor hurricane, collapsed stage, cancelled gig...

estebanf - You could always look into getting a refund for the tickets by way of your credit card details, which I guess you gave when booking the tickets.  Just a thought.  Of course I am gutted for everyone that msised out on Rio - I am just glad that everyone was safe when this so could of been a massive disaster.  Makes something like a rock concert seem pretty unimportant when so many lives were at risk.

Enjoy Argentina and Uruguay......

I'm ok, everyone on the bus were ok too. But it was really scary! Unfortunately I'm used to hear gunshots here, when I tell people that Rio de Janeiro is a very violent city people think I'm being negative, but I just speak out what I see on daily basis. But to experience that kind of situation, to have to lay down on the bus' floor and wait for, what, 10 or 15 minutes until the gunfire ends, with crying ladies and kids, people nervous and desperate and worry and scared by the possibility of being hit by a bullet...I hope to never go through that again, and anyone else for that matter. I had to build an amazing sense of calmness, because there was a woman, desperate, laid next to me, crying like hell, so I felt like I needed to be calm in order to make them calm too. I kept saying to them: "Everything will be ok. Be calm. You all are gonna be with your family soon. Nothing is gonna happen to us..."

That's a horribly situation. :-\

But be prepared if Flamengo goes to play there on Libertadores! But not just the fans, the team as well. I saw today on TV that the forward Wagner Love will have to talk to the police about a video that surfaced of him on a Funk "show" filled with drug dealers heavily armed, and he was being escorted by some of them...so the players aren't that innocent either! You have to watch out for them too!  :hihi:
But that's too much of an off topic.

Since my flight to argentina is tomorrow, i just had to put my best sad and whiny face, speak in a very credible english, begging them to give me my money back, which they did. What begun being a ticket for GNR, it ended being a nice Corinthians Ronaldo t-shirt!  ;D

It's fuckin' crazy and so scary.
Like a horror movie.
It remember me the Heineken Jammin' Festival in Italy 2007: the day before the Aerosmith show at the festival, just at the end a band performance, the area was hit by a minor tornado. I was just coming back at home with my train tickets and my boyfriend told me what it happened... I couldn't believe it. Some light tower collapsed and some ampli dameged, some people injured... I was there with my tickets in the hand and no words to explain my state of mind.

I'm pretty sure Jarmo was just saying in general, and not chewing you out specifically.

My point was simply agreeing with Jarmo, not attacking you personally. He was right. It was just a concert, and the most important thing is that the band, crew, the pale guy with the glasses and backpack, and the fans, yes including you, are alive to see another day.

So, to whoever wants to believe this...

I live in Sao Paulo.  I went to the Palestra Italia show, trully amazing, almost shitted myself when Axl threatened to leave (there is more to shitting myself, keep reading) and had a blast.  Came home, slept, woke up, had breakfast (lunch actually) and headed to the airport for my 16:40 to Rio.   The flight left at 17:20, we got to Rio at around 18:00 and were about to land in the local airport (Santos Dumont) whent he pilot announced that the world was falling down and that the local airport, which has a VERY SHORT runway, was closed and we were diverting to the Internatinal Airport (Galeao, much bigger runway).

We flew for another 10 minutes, the pilot did the final left turn and lined up to the runway.  At this point, it was 18:20 (yes, the stage fell about 15 min after that I think).  About 20 seconds before landing (I know this because we talked later) he got an ABORT ABORT from the tower, gunned the throtle to FULL and flew straight up and into the storm.

Basically, this is the really pant-shitting part... I have flown quite a bit, but never, NEVER experienced anything like this.  Have you seen the first episode of LOST?  Well, we went short of the plane breaking in two.  Lightning, thunder, turbulence, people praying, I for the first time picked up the puke bag (to no use).  10 minutes of hell. The pilot had to climb back all the way to cruise altitude to clear the clouds, and even so it was a scary sight.  We ended up landing in Belo Horizonte, some 500km away and only then I found out that the show was off.

I spoke  for some time with the pilot while sorting out what to do, and he said it was one of the worst he has ever experienced. We were the last plane to try to land before they closed the airport, and we aborted landing about 500m from the runway.  some 45mph crosswinds were hitting the airport.

I got off in BH, checked on the weather, and hopped a plane back to Sao Paulo.  I aint worried about the money, probably because (a) I?m glad we made it and (b) my ticked for April is still valid.  But I?m probably driving there.

Having said that, I would like to say I?m very glad no one got seriously hurt, and the crowd was still outside.  A flying pannel like the ones from the roof, which are probably metal, would cut someone in 2 like butter when flying/falling from up there...

Cheers,

Footage of the stage collapsing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWeMchmBjOU&feature=email

That sucks for everyone who was looking forward to the show (i know what it's like to be at a GnR show that doesn't happen), but...  that footage of the stage collapsing and that weather was some crazy shit! Thank God nobody got killed! And it's a good thing the stage collapsed when it did. Imagine if it held up til the weather cleared, and then collapsed later on, when there might be people around or even the fucking band on stage! Unless of course that fuckhead who threw the bottle the other night rushed up front to get a good bottle-throwing spot -- it wouldn't have been a loss for that fucker to get crushed by the wreckage!  :hihi:

Jesus Christ ... :o :o

Something terrible could have happened that night if the band took the stage and the audience was right there ...

What a nightmare it could have been.

10 minutes of hell. yes. in fact, I came to Apoteose very early (like 15.30), and im not the kind of guy who likes to wait being quietly stood up. So I decided to walk for a bit, and found a cemetery near the sambodromo. I stayed there like for 2 hours, taking pictures, and I was glad because there was a lot of sunlight and the weather was just incredible (very hot).
Then i went back to start making the row, and when the first drops of rain came i was more than pleased, because it was hotter than hell and because i was dreaming an incredible hot and under the rain GNR gig in rio, which should be a dream for every foreign GNR fan!
But later, the rain came truly heavy, with huge winds and the temperature started to fall down. When I started seeing people leaving the row, i immediatly said for myself ''oh no, this just cant be true... i kept myself in the row, just waiting for a miracle, because even though the rain was heavy, i would have never expected that it could just destroy the stage! In fact, i discovered the stage felt down when I came back to Copacabana and went to a cyber to see if there was some news about a possible reschedule date.
The overall vibe before they announced the show was cancelled was the best possible. That neighbouhood was a little bit scary (i would have never walked those streets if there wasnt a GNR show or a whole lot of people doing it along me) but i was just having a great time, looking brazilian guys and gals playing football under the rain, singing, having fun, and there was also a lot of fans singing GNR songs in a very rustic and hybrid english!
Got my flight back to Argentina today at 17.30. Then, the 18th, i have to go in a ferry boat from Buenos Aires to Montevideo to see the band there at the Centenario Stadium, and then my last show at Buenos Aires.
Bittersweet experience until now. Got lots of good memories (specially from Belo Horizonte) and some other not too good ones. Anyway, I would do this same journey all over again to see GNR. GNR is worth everything. I just seen this with my own eyes. Once you see Axl dancing and singing with his characteristic fury and aggressiveness, nothing else matters.

On another note, im so sad I couldnt shake hands with Tico, Leatrice, Mandy, Voodoo and Manets, and all those crazy brazilian GNR fans. That was another part of my dream what couldnt happen. Now i have to meet some argentine and uruguayian fans that I came to love but never had the chance of meeting personally.
