Guns 'N Roses, Daughtry added to lineup as concerts move to Monkey Rock

Following a split over the weekend with Glencoe Capt Resort, the Rock ?N Rev Festival has found a new home at Monkey Rock USA and will bring Guns ?N Roses and Daughtry with it, said Monkey Rock chief operating officer Chris Edwards.

?There are not a lot of places capable of hosting an event and lineup like this,? Edwards said. ?We offered the option to solve a problem and they sent their operations people to survey the area -- all of it happened within 48 hours.?

The new location for the weeklong festival was determined after negotiations fell through between concert promoters DC3 Global and Glencoe Camp Resort late last week, said Randy Alexander, public relations director for the festival promoter DC3 Global. He said new festival owners HDlogix and DC3 Global will build The Rock ?N Rev Amphitheater at Monkey Rock on a 25-acre site. Negotiations for the 5-day concert series were finalized Monday afternoon.

?We were motivated to try to help and they were quite interested to find another place,? Edwards said. ?With commitments to rally goers, they wanted to fulfill their end of the bargain.?

Alexander said Monkey Rock USA was chosen for its proximity to the Glencoe campground. DC3 said it is working with Glencoe to offer special accommodations at the festival for anybody who is camping. The new venue was also selected with future ventures in mind, Alexander said.

?The relationship has been entered with long-term vision in mind,? he said.

Bands scheduled to play at Glencoe will play at Monkey Rock USA with Guns ?N Roses set to headline the Friday night stage for its first United States show in nine years and only U.S. show in 2010, Edwards said. Guns ?N Roses will share the Friday night stage with Alice in Chains

The Daughtry show time has not yet been determined, Edwards said.

Sturgis Mayor Maury LaRue was shocked to hear the new location of the festival.

?It?s up to them; if they make money it?s a good move,? LaRue said. ?If they don?t, they will have to rethink it.?

After negotiations between DC3 and Glencoe broke down late last week due to unpaid rent, people who have reserved camping spaces at Glencoe had mixed feelings.

?I plan on having a good time, and so much easier to just walk back to your tent after the concerts,? Neil Smith said in an e-mail. ?Now I will have to figure out ways to get back. This is not good business, they should work it out or they should have never announced the concert in the first place.?

Eagle River, Wis., resident John Jacobson said he has been attending the Sturgis bike rally for 13 years and stayed at Glencoe for five years and is glad the concert was moved.

?I am happy to see the concerts gone from Glencoe, there are far too many concert venues in Sturgis the way it is,? Jacobson said in an e-mail. ?Concerts only appeal to a select few. It is not, and never will be, a reason to come to the Sturgis rally.?

Alexander said all tickets will be honored at the new location and prices will stay the same.

Okay Jarmo as a woman that grew up with bikers and has attended Sturgis I am very concerned about this show. One I can't believe that they could offer GNR enough money, two its only like 2 weeks away. I hope the guys realize that everyone there is going to expect the old line up. I hate to say that but its true.
And damn I am pissed. I just got back too work after being laid off for 10 mo. I can't afford to go and am dying to go out there to begin with!!!! I would be one of the only hardcore gnr fans there!! Damn!

I am not trying to be negative at all Jarmo and your right. You will find that at every show, but this is a different kind of crowd. I am very hopeful that is goes off without a hitch. I am still trying to figure out if there is any way I can pull off driving out there for 2 days. Its a 12 hour drive for me.


Believe me 2 of the most important things in my life are gnr and that part of the country. It couldn't be a better idea for me. Just don't know how I can pull it off. I am so damn broke. lol

Actually, GN'R played a few gigs in New York City this year  :)

They also played in the US in 2002, which is EIGHT years ago, so obviously the fact checking wasn't very good for this article.  Strange, but good news.  Unfortunately South Dakota is a long ways away from me.  I will be flying back from Vegas a few days prior, maybe the band would like to do a couple warmup shows there.

So for any of you going, I would recommend camping at the Buffalo Chip for the week, as in my opinion, they have the better lineup, then on Friday head over to this place to see Gn'R. I figure I can skip Disturbed and the Scorpions for this!!!

I live in South Dakota, and I've talked to a lot of people over the years on if theres video cameras allowed in there, and they have all told me that as long as you got a ticket that you can walk in there with whatever you want. Not sure about this place though, cause this is an actual new ampitheater, before they just had the stage set up in a back field at Buffalo Chip. I don't get to go though, cause I'm in Sioux Falls, on the other side of the state. :(

The Buffalo Chip is a totally seperate event. It's still going on. I'll be at the Chip all week except for Friday obviously...I think they have the better overall lineup.

I have many friends who have made the trip to Sturgis !!  and that crowed is people you really dont want to piss off!!

Rapid City would be your only choice. Hope you can find a flight. Things get really booked up for the rally.

Thanks! Lots of flights available still... one stop flights are around 1,000 and 2-stop flight are 700 or so... what i cant find is a hotel that's available.

thats going to be a big problem. I take it you are renting a car? If so you can stay in other surrounding towns. You would be best to look in Wall or Lead. If I go I am staying in Custer but thats quite a way out. I am guessing you may have to go to Wall but its right on the interstate and they have a few hotels.

They used that same promo on Canada and Brazil, but there are some changes in the beggining.

 I can't believe it but I pulled it off. Cineater and I are going! I ordered tickets and I got a hotel in Wall. Its way out of the way but its on our way so it works out. This is going to be a long haul. They have a 6 hour drive too me and then a 12 hour drive to Sturgis. Hell its gnr its so worth it.
Oh I have to add, I just love all the ticketmaster add ons. My $45 tickets now cost $58. Still a very nice price too see gnr just would rather give the band the money and not ticketmaster.

The venue isn't built yet - they are currently constructing it - so I'm not sure there's a final answer to that question. I'm sure the planners know but I don't know if much info has come out. The PollStar article points out that this Ampitheater is under construction with less than 3 weeks til the first show of the festival. They're talking like this is a permanent structure, not a temporary stage setup, and if that's the case - crazy!

The Black Hills are one of the most beautiful parts of the country. Rapid City, Sturgis, Deadwood, ect.....that whole area is awesome.

I would love to go to Deadwood someday. Damn this sucks. I was excited that this was San Diego, and that might've been doable for me. I am a working family man busting my balls daily, no way I am going to pack up and head to South fucking Dakota. This is fucking silly.


It's like us here that got to see GN'R rise up from the Sunset streets. Us Southern Californians who grew up in Los Angeles that got to see as this whole thing went down, somehow pissed Axl off. I don't know shit but, if I did, I would think GN'R would play a show or two for the hometown fans that have stuck with Axl through all the fucking shit. Just one show, or two before heading off to everywhere else. But cool, a biker rally in South Dakota.

I would LOVE to go to this. Especially with the giant issue I had and missing 2 Canadian shows I paid for! Getting the time off work for a road trip is no problem at all. Paying for tickets and travel is something I just can't do right now.

My feeling about this show, is that it was not something has been in the works. I'm guessing that the band want to play in between the long gap between the 2 European legs. It might be a show which was booked at the last minute as a kind of warm-up for Europe.

I'm certain the US's time will come for a full blown tour, it's not too far away regardless.  ;)

In all fairness, it is a one off show in a part of the country that is not all that heavily populated and isn't as easily accessible from a travel perspective as NYC or LA, for example.

Of course its not remotely bad. The oil spill in the gulf is bad. Look, the Universal shows were all great and the Vegas show I saw was fucking awesome and I had a great time at each, and it was just fucking awesome seeing Axl and GN'R live again after so many years. I am just feeling there is this slant towards L.A. from Axl. Like when he is here it is more about taking care of business rather then really wanting to be playing for the home crowd rockers. Watching the videos from some of these shows, he just seems happier to be at other places. Its just a personal observation. In a way I totally get it too, if that is the case and this is an accurate assessment.

I think Rapid City would be closest.  Not a huge airport and probably fairly expensive to get there

As for people flying in. Rapid would really be your only choice and its not that far to drive. But Good luck getting a car rental. Its the busiest week of the year out there. And a hotel is going to be out of your way too. Sturgis pretty much books everything in the area.

Not sure, but they are closing the show so it's not like they'll have to finish at a certain time so another band can go on.  No idea about curfews or anything though.

Outdoor venues are usually a little stricter on the curfew due to noise bylaws etc. I saw Iron Maiden at the Amphitheater in Toronto a few weeks ago and was shocked at how early they went on - they were done by 10:30. Full set, awesome show but I'm guessing that's why.

Noise from GNR vs the roar of lord knows how many motorcycles?  GNR is going to lose.  Nobody cares about the noise level up there.  It's the sound of money for that area, they love it.  :hihi:

So it's Friday the 13th?  Maybe they better be a few hours late taking the stage.  :D

{I think} as the closers gnr will pretty much get to deside how long they play. the show is on the outskirts of the city from what i can tell so I don't think they have a curfew. Believe me I know the city and the people that don't want too hear the noise actually leave town for the week. A lot of people rent out there yards and homes ahead of time for campers. I have friends that for years rented a couples yard and than got use of the water and such in the house.

They responded, saying "Opener at 6, Alice in Chains goes on at 8:30, and Guns 10:30 - but you should take a nap cuz it'll probably be a late night!"

So I'd guess they're giving gnr some leeway.

You're asked to headline at a festival taking place in Sturgis during that particular week and play in front of thousands of fans... Seriously?

I'm not finding any "official" statistics, but it seems attendance to the Sturgis rally was estimated to be upwards of 400,000 last year - some websites are estimating 500 - 700K for this year's 70th anniversary.  Wow!!

These types of events are never a bad thing for a band, to get exposure like this to average people is huge.  Not to mentions this event is massive everyone will hear about this one, that is a very smart venture for the Guns camp.

Work hasn't approved my vacation.  I'm afraid I may have to call in sick.  Anybody got the name of a good illness I can use besides I've covered so much work around here that if you can't give me a couple of days off when I've given you 3 weeks notice I'm going to be so pissed I may have to kill a few of you?

You could say that you have  massive sinus infection with severe dizziness, nausea and vomiting and migraine type headaches. Just be careful, calling in sick when vacations are not approved always looks a little fishy to managers. Food poisioning is another good one, along with pulled muscles in your neck or back. Sometimes just being honest works, just say you have an important out of town event that is a once in a lifetime opportunity and you're taking a few personal days.

Off the top of my head, one would ask why?  The main event is already way over crowded, don't need the publicity.  The venue is going to be lucky to be ready, let alone be ready to be showed off as a permanent facility.  I'm betting they are making due with what sound equipment they can get in there so we probably won't be giving that high marks.

This is my first time at this motorcycle event but I suspect a lot of people will ride out on Saturday morning, they usually do so they can be to work on Monday.  I'm thinking the Friday night slot at 10:30 could be a little less crowded then some of the other shows.  I could be totally wrong about that too.

A buddy and I are going to try and drive back 16 hours after the show. We'll hit a McD's, refuel and go as far as we can back to STL.

Yeah Cin a lot of people leave Friday and Saturday. Hell a lot of these people have to drive clear across the country. I am hoping we catch some long stands of bikes on Friday in the hills. I love the sound of thunder threw the hills. Best sound in the world.
And yeah my guess would be that gnr is going to put on a stripped down show. This stage won't be that big. Unless they are bringing in there own stage, but it doesn't sound like it. First time seeing Dj! I can't wait.

Maybe less of a crowd but still huge.  For all the things that could go wrong here, I'm glad we're going to be with the bikers.  We're safe with them.

We've got days of concerts before this one, they'll work it out.  And in the words of the leader of the band:  We'll muddel through.  It's going to be great (pray hard and long  :hihi:).

there are large groups that go threw the park everyday and we will only be in the park in the morning Friday then up the back roads.

Rapid City is very close.  City of 60K or more.

That numbers pretty accurate. There are TONS of campgrounds out there, which is where I'll be all week. Now keep in mind, those numbers aren't for the concert. I expect somewhere in the neighborhood of 30k on any given night of the concert.

I warned you guys. You need to call and book something. And you will pay a lot and you may have to stay an hour away. Go too the offical Sturgis site for camping info. I think they have links that you can book at. Don't wait tell you get there for hotel, camping or car rental. You will probably be screwed. Trust me  I have been out there for the Rally many times. Everything books up.

I don't know about this venue  :hihi:  They're on schedule to get the stage up in time but it's on top of a landfill and they have been kind of trash compacting it.  I don't know if you've seen Paint Your Wagon but "sink into the pit" is coming to mind!  It's going to be an adventure for all of us.

I'm not even going to this show but I really feel anticipation for it for some reason. It seems like this is a huge thing for Sturgis, for the festival and for GnR. I think out of any recent show I'm looking forward for this one.

Yup for some reason, I have the same feeling...dont know why really. Maybe because its the first major show in the US since 2006, maybe because there is an insane amount of people flocking to Sturgis for the festival in general not just for GnR....we will see.

anyone else wonder by Ron is now playing the solo in SCOM?

ron has been playing half the solo since Robin Left. When Dj came in they decided that's how it would sound better. Ron has already mentioned this in interviews. nothing big, they all get to share solos and see what fits the song best

Yes, I agree.

It's the same reason why DJ is now playing the SCOM interlude solos, when Ron used to in 06/07. It's really just to switch things up abit, so it stays fresh for everyone.  :)

There's mention that the reason the band was delayed on stage was because the venue's film crew needed to make some changes to the sound equipment to accomodate GNR's boards.

In the same article explaining all that, they mention they're filming a DVD of the festival...

Man, I hope we get a chance to get our hands on that DVD and it includes some GnR footage!

GNR was on the big screens and there was a female camera person on stage to start with but the camera that was floating over our heads all night long wasn't during the GNR show or maybe I didn't notice it.  I didn't get hit in the head with it which was my only concern.

Hell there was so many bands up there, I could have spent the whole week going from concert to concert.  GNR was right when they called it band camp.  I'm seriously thinking about going up next year just for the concerts.

Cin, they were the ones recording for a possible dvd for Rock and Rev. They recorded every show.
