Title: Disrespecting the new guys?
Post by: AxlzMyHero on November 17, 2011, 03:04:47 PM
Lately I been think about the fans that go to the show with a t shirt of the old band.  In a way I kinda feel like this is a little disrespectful to the band that is NOW GNR.  I for one will not be wearing any of my old shirts to the show in Camde, NJ.  Does anyone else feel this way?

No way bro, its no different than a Manchester United fan wearing a Cantona or Best shirt, the history is there and denying it ever happened is pure wrong. The band themselves have all said that they aren't on board to replace anybody, they are part of the evolution, not a revolution.  :smoking:

Yeah I don't feel that way either.  I support the band as it is today just as much as anyone, but I don't think there is anything wrong with wearing an "Appetite" shirt to a Guns N' Roses show.  It is part of the history of the band.  Thats like saying wearing a "Master of Puppets" shirt to a Metallica show is disrespectful to Rob Triujillo.  I don't see it that way.

I don't think that way either im going to tonites show at the meadowlands and im wearing a chinese democracy shirt more so because its the first North American Tour since the release of Chinese and im supporting a great album. I don't think anything differently of old GN'R shirts because at the end of the day its all GN'R fans and if i figure if people wanna hate the new line up they wouldnt show up.

I kind of agree with the OP. I got some cool Chinese Democracy shirts from previous shows. I just feel Chinese Democracy is really going unnoticed or is generally being disrespected in the music world (like whenever I hear GNR on the radio it is never a song of Chinese Democracy...shit like that) and I will forever defend it because I really think its incredible and a true masterpiece.

I think its great if more fans showed there support for Chinese Democracy.

No disrespect at all... Old era logos are still more readily available than new stuff

There selling a new T-shirt with the current lineup ( don't like using new lineup, since most of the band member's have been there longer, then original members) on it at these shows.  I would just purchase one at the show you're going to.

Well, I'm not wearing my AFD cross & skulls shirt to the show in Worcester next week for that reason, so I guess I kind of get it and related to your post.
Going to wear the classic logo& the "GNR was here" with splatters all over the front and back.  No pictures of "Slash" or anything else.  Plus, I will be backstage and plan on bumping into the guys.  I wouldn't wnat to upset Axl by wearing something "offensive."  LOL

But most people already have their GNR shirts from before and may not want to shell out big $$ for a new shirt... Whats the big deal?

It's not a big deal... but saying it's another alternative if you don't wanna wear a older shirt.

New guys? The newest member has almost three years under his belt already. There isn't any "new guys"

And 3 years is such a looooong time, isn't it?  :hihi:  I got news for ya fella, as long as GNR doesn't include Slash, Izzy, Steven, or Duff, then every member will always be considered a "new guy".  Kind of like Ronnie Wood is still looked at that way, despite being a member of the Rolling Stones since 1975.

Yeah?  Well if that's the case, then the band needs to stop performing GNR songs from 1987-1991, because that's disrespectful to the current lineup, and it undermines Chinese Democracy.

Seriously, there are so many people on this site who have argued til their face turns blue that the current lineup should continue to play old GNR songs, despite the fact that (excluding Axl), they didn't write or record those songs.

And what reason do you all give for that?

 "Because damn it, those old GNR songs are GUNS N ROSES SONGS, AND THE CURRENT BAND IS GUNS N ROSES!"

Fine.  If you're not going to differentiate between the songs that were written and recorded by different lineups, then it's hypocritical to expect fans to shell out money for new T shirts that differentiate the lineups.

Can't have your cake and eat it too, fellas.

I somewhat relate to this.  I feel the same way about Ozzy Osbourne.  I absolutely cannot stand "Crazy Train", because it's play every fucking where.  Radio, TV ads, sporting events, over the PA during concert intermissions, etc.  Ozzy has tons of great material that never gets played anywhere, instead they play the overplayed "classic" song.

But at the end of the day, radio is all about commercialism.  We don't have to like it, but it won't ever change.

I think ur kinda ridiculous if u find anything wrong with wearing a band's shirt that wrote most of the songs u are jamming to

Love the new, Respect the Old.

U don't have to choose.
