Title: Axl's 50th
Post by: 14 Yrs Of Silence on November 29, 2011, 10:52:18 PM
With Axl's 50th birthday coming up in a couple of months, I was just thinking how cool it would be if the fans could do something to thank him for adding something special to our lives.  Maybe something like getting a collection to take an ad out in the NY Times or LA Times?  Any ideas?  If we could get all the GN'R fan sites, Facebook, Twitter, etc., I bet we could do something cool.

If we wanna deal with money...to buy an ad, I think Jarmo is the guy that should be in charged.  He could open a paypal account of some kind,...
just throwing ideas!

Great idea.  And I truly believe that we should do something.  Taking out an ad in a major news place is
 - mmm...I don't really think so.  That's just my opinion, though, and what would I know.  I personally think that it would be more "hearfelt" and real if we all did something more personal - like signatures and wishes on some big birthday card or something.

Well...just sayin'....that's just me....but even though I've had my personal opinions through the years, I'd still be in on something bigger.

More than happy to chip in. Something like a huge GNR banner flown over LA, Indiana and New York on his birthday or something, organised soley by the fans to say thanks?

If there is one thing Axl has always been passionate about (as best we can tell at a distance) it's GnR. Not individual members maybe, but the concept as a whole.

Something reflective of that would be a worthy tribute IMHO.

Full page ad sounds cool,  and i agree Jarmo should handle payment etc

could we possibly hide this topic from "Dexter" somehow? .... for obvious reasons

Just like the ad we did almost 10 years ago! For those who don't remember / werent here yet, some of us (I was part of that!) gave some money n' we did a "Thank You ad" with lots of personal messages from the fans I think it was for the LA Times, not sure now (I only kept the page of the ad). If anyone has the image of that I can scan mine.

Yeah I'm liking this ad idea. get something together before hand from a bunch of us...figure out the cost...set it up...make it a nice bday present for Axl....I think we'll definitely need Jarmo to handle the paypal aspect, etc.....But yeah, I'm totally game for a few bucks, or maybe a few more.

And Jarmo, not a word to the boss about this....lol

We could do something like this for Axl's 50 bday!!!

Title: Axl's Birthday / L.A. Weekly
Post by: spgunner on December 12, 2011, 02:22:07 PM
Some fans (including me) are thinking about paying for a paid advertisement at the L.A. Weekly to be printed on 02/06/12 edition of the LA Weekly, to celebrate Axl?s 50th birthday.

As some of you know (n? were even part of that like myself) some fans did something like this back in 2002.

We could do something like this now ? I think it?s a nice gift we all could give to Axl.

I thought about something like that:

It?s pretty simple ? if any of you guys have a better idea or at least the proper tools to make this thing look cooler (I believe any kid who?s into technology can improve that in 1000% lol) be my guest n? do it.

What's written can be changed too - it's just an idea.

The L.A. Weekly charges U$ 2,900.00 for the ad (feel free to ask them yourself if you want at jhill@laweekly.com) ? Check it out below.

We can charge the fans who want to be a part of it for a specific amount ( U$ 10.00 per fan ? we would need 290 fans or U$ 20.00 per fan ? 145 fans ? n? work on the art so all the names of the fans would be included). Another idea is doing like the old ad from 2002 ? charge the fans by each character written, so the fans who want to write bigger messages, pay more. Those who can?t pay much, would pay less ? but then we would have to jump from a simple ad into something more advanced like the old ad. Keep in mind that time is short n? maybe we don?t have enough time to do something more complex!

We also need someone who can handle the payments with a Paypal account in the US, much better if it?s someone from California (in case the ad doesn?t happen by any reason, the person who?s in charge sends the payments back).

Hope it works, Axl deserves a lot more but at least it?s something!

Ed

We need to have someone at the area to buy the newspapers n' send to us.

We also need to add to the amount the cost of one newspaper n' mail expenses - one good reason to low the amount per fan - but we need to find more fans.

As soon as we have an address/zip code from a sweet soul from the LA area we can find out about the amounts for mail costs. Just like at Ebay when they sell worldwide. No big deal n' it's gonna be cheap since a newspaper ain't heavy!

I've many friends n' relatives who made very special parties for their 50th old bdays. It's a special date. I just think he would be happy - if you don't think, don't be a part of it.

Shipping news:

Made a quick research at Ebay - people from California (places such as San Marino, Long Beach n' Fresno to name a few) charge from 6.95 to 9.25 to send a CD to anywhere in the world - Asia, Israel, Europe, South America, Australia, Russia, etc). The only places they charge for less are Canada n' Porto Rico (around 4.50).

So it's safe to say we can send around 7.00 for shipping costs + the price of a LA Weekly.

Does any of you know how much for a copy of the LA Weekly?

We only need one good soul from the LA area who's willing to deal with the Paypal amounts / talks to the LA Weekly / Buy n' ship the newspapers.

I know it's a lot to ask but if we find the right person, we're ok to go!

A fan called Eva. I won't give her full name or contact coz seems like she's out of the Guns world.

Anyway, she was just a fan like all of us. We just need to organize this thing n' do it.

Unfortunately, seems like not so many are into it - let's see how it goes at the next few weeks.

We only need to:

- Set up the art n' see the amount of money to be charged of the fans who are into it
- Collect the money using a Paypal acount (better if it's from USA/LA area)
- Have someone from the LA area to be responsible for the contact with the LA Weekly n' shipping the newspapers to the fans

My sister (who lives in SC) was into handling everything but she lives at the other side of the country I don't think it's a good idea. We really need someone who lives in California.

While I am ready to chip in, it does interest me how legal this would be? Collecting money without a permission, we don't want the authorities on our back. I'm from Europe and not sure we could do this but maybe things are different over there.

I'm no snitch either, let's do this :peace: :hihi:

Hmm... I do know a person who lives in LA but I'd rather be honest with the forum and say that I do not trust him enough to put my name out there as saying he's ok to handle everyone's money or get the ad done right.

I would be for this and I know of two other, non forum members I could get to contribute as well.

Another idea might be for us to modernize the idea of of "ad". Does anyone know how much it would cost to maybe buy a domain name like "www.happy50thbirtdayaxlrose.com" or something like that? Have a cool, simple design just like the newspaper ad, but just as a static graphic  on a webpage and possibly a view counter? Then we could post links all over hell and really crank up the view count. Something like that could get attention on Billboard and potentially snow ball into something bigger than a newspaper ad.

Just a thought.

Indeed:
I think it would be cool just to buy a domain name and link it to a page.
The page could be (for example): a cool pic of Axl (or some cool pics) and then below all the birthday wishes of all fans. (to be added by entering a small form or so).
The cost for such a page is totally not much. I would suggest to have the name active for 1 year or so... I am willing to buy the domain name. No problem.

I am also able (technically) to create a nice looking page for this => but hosting the page is something else. It would certainly generate a lot of traffic (I assume) so the hosting where the site resides should be able to process this...
Therefore I am looking to Jarmo :-) ; maybe we could place the page on the same hosting of HTTGTH?? (I think this one is 'strong enough')
Any other idea's?

Instead of creating many different threads, let's keep it in just one thread.

This thread at cd.com is only about the ad from the get go so we can spread this link n' make people go there -

http://www.chinesedemocracy.com/forum/index.php/topic,48602.14.html

The fans who are into other foruns (mygnr, newgnr, gnrevolution) can put the links there. It's already a mess to develop this thing in one thread, imagine if we start to talk about it in many! ;)

Westcoast JUnkie, we're still seeing who's gonna be in charge for Paypal. Keep on coming back here coz we gonna decide about that soon!

The deadline to set up an account, book the space, and pay for the ad at the LA Weekly would be Friday, Jan 27th by 4pm.

Then we have till january 30th the deliver the art!

We already have Axl's Favorite Mechanical Bull to ship the newspapers to the fans involved.

Now we only need to finish the art n' find someone to manage the Paypal acount.

There's a new art rolling at cd.com:

Nice artwork.  I think it would be cool to add a message also congratulating him on his induction into the HOF.

spgunner - I think you missed some folks who are willing to chip in, and I think you'll get a bunch more once you set up and promote this on the various sites.  I think it would be best to start with a minimum amount that everyone must contribute to get their names included in the advertisment.  Then, if we don't get to the goal, we can figure out how to split the difference.  But if we ask for $20 per person which gets them their name in print on the advertisement, I'd guess we can get at least 50 people to do this.  Thats $1000 and gets us half a page.  I think we'll see a lot more people get involved once an account is set up, but we need to set a minimum amount.  Think $20 works?

First sorry for my bad English.
But if some of the fans have more money now they can help to others, that don't have now money and they can put their names in the ad free

Hi there!

You?re right ? that?s the main goal now: a fan Who can manage a Paypal account. Once we start putting money there, more people will get involved.

We need to decide for how much we gonna charge the fans:

At the old ad, the more you pay, the more you can write ? but it needs time, we don?t have it. So what I thought is what you?ve said ? U$ 20.00 per fan ? one big message n? the names of who?s into it.

But from this U$ 20.00, U$ 7.00 will be for shipping costs due to send the newspaper to the fan who?s paying. So we would work on a badget of U$ 13.00 per fan. To achieve 2.900,00 we would need around 220 fans.

We need someone that everybody can trust n? that lives in the US (better if located at the LA area) to handle Paypal ? once we find this person, I think this will have a snowball effect n? will grow!

Who's into putting an extra congratulations for the RNRHOF?

Title: Re: Axl's 50th
Post by: spgunner on December 22, 2011, 10:40:42 AM
So far:

ART:
- Axsalute's Art with a few changes, maybe among them putting a congrats on the RNRHOF  - (art can be seen at cd.com)

Paypal:
- We need a person to handle the Paypal acount in the US

Money:
- US residents - U$13.00 for the ad plus U$4.50 for shipping of the LA Weekly = U$ 17.50
- Non US residents - U$ 13.00 for the ad plus U$ 7.00 for shipping of the LA Weekly = U$ 20.00

Shipping of LA Weekly copies:
- Axl's Mechanical Bull says he takes care of it.

We have more or less 30 people on it already - if we start the Paypal payments with the Art ready, more people will get inside.

here's the new art - let's try to finish this thing till the end of the weekend n' start collecting money.

Matt - are you able to start collecting money?

Axl's Favorite Mechanical Bull - Are you going to send the LA Weekly's by mail?

Let's finish the subject of the amount of money per fan - I think it's fair like this:

US Residents + Canada - U$ 18.00 - U$ 13.00 for the ad + U$ 5.00 for shipping costs
Non US Residents - U$ 20.00 - U$ 13.00 for the ad + U$ 7.00 for shipping costs

Waiting on news from you guys !

In case there's some bucks missing at the very last days we might put some more just to finish it. If it doesn't happen for any reason, Matt sends the money back to the fans.

First off: I have no idea why Annie is blowing smoke up my ass cause I've never sent an e-card to anyone ever.
FOR THE RECORD:  I DO NOT know Axl or Beta or anyone in the band or their family members, etc.
I DO NOT have Axl or anyone else's e-mail addy to send e-cards or messages or whatever.

I AM NOT AN "INSIDER" IN ANY WAY, SHAPE OR FORM!!!
I DO NOT know when/where/if there are secret shows.
I CAN NOT get anyone backstage or VIP passes to shows or access to Axl or anyone else.

Second:  Know that Axl and the rest of the band may or may not read the forums so any "best wishes" we post may not get read.  But we can still post them and I know in my heart that our "best wishes" go "out into the universe" and are "received" by the person in some cosmic way.

That being said...
My SUGGESTION is that we can each make a contribution in Axl's name to the charity of our choice.

Most charities give you the option of making a "tribute" donation.  It will say something like "I am making this contribution in honor of ..... " and you fill in the person's name.  (It also may give you the option to send the person an acknowledgement of your gift but in this case we don't have Axl's e-mail or whatever so that ain't happening.)

For those who don't have a credit card to do this online, there are other ways you can do something similar.  (I'll post what I did below as an example but you can obviously do whatever you'd like.  Be creative!)

In honor of Axl's 50th Birthday, I went to church, lit a candle, put a donation in the 'poor box' and said a prayer for Axl.

I made a donation in Axl's name to Covenant House which is a charity to help homeless kids.  Covenant House has locations in the US, Canada and Central America.  www.covenanthouse.org

I made a donation in Axl's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.  www.stjude.org/tribute
They gave me the option to make a "printable card" but I couldn't figure out how to get it to print properly. (half was upside down and the note was printed to the side instead of on the card).  I cut each part of the card and re-arranged it .....

I hate to rain on anyone's parade here but the charity idea is so much better if you really want to do something. Giving money to a newspaper to wish a celebrity Happy Birthday seems extremely frivolous and silly to me. Just my opinion.

Giving to charity is great, but doing it on behalf of someone you don't know and who has nothing to do with the organization and nothing (that you are I know of) to do with the people that that organization helps, seems kind of silly.  I give to plenty of charities and I'll do it on behalf of someone that I know of who is dealing with cancer or the like.  But in this case its just a nice moment for fans to come together and let Axl know how much we care and how much his music means to us.

The newspaper ad is a nice gesture. I like the charity idea too. Axl visited a children's hospital a few years ago. The band also went to a children's hospital this past year. I think it would be nice to donate to a charity he cares about in honor of his birthday.

I agree.  A newspaper ad that he may never see, to boot.

I second the idea of giving to a charity that Axl is known to support.  I'm sure Axl himself would appreciate that more than giving it to a newspaper that probably has run critical articles of Axl in the past.

All we need is a list of the charities Axl is known to support. That's a good idea because while you donate and mention his name someone there must remember that Axl has done it as well. Then they'll talk about it during coffee breaks.

To be honest I have no idea how to donate "on behalf of someone" but maybe we'll find out

I quoted these 2 posts because my response applies to both.

It appears that Axl is not the type of person who "advertises" what he does for charity so I doubt we'll be able to get a list of his fav charities.

That's why I think it's more prudent we each pick our own fav.

You can either:
1. make your donation in honor of Axl .... (@Lord Stan - There's usually an option to fill in the person's name you're honoring on the page where you're making your donation selections) (@ everyone - Don't be intimidated by the pre-set donation amounts.  You can give whatever amount you'd like in the box marked "Other Amount" (usually there's a $5 minimum for online donations)....

2. Use the occassion of Axl's birthday to make a donation to the charity of your choice in honor of a friend or family member or whomever as @14 Yrs of Silence suggested.  (It might be a nice thing for people to do, if you'd like, to post a little about who/where/why you're honoring someone so maybe someone else would like to donate to that too.)

Example:  To celebrate Axl's 50th birthday, I made a donation to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation  www.komen.org  in honor of my cousin who is a survivor of Stage 4 Breast Cancer.

Like a said before,  DO NOT expect Axl to know about or read about any of this. BUT, I know in my heart that our "best wishes" will go "out into the universe" and will be "received in some cosmic way".

P.S.  It doesn't have to be a money donation.  You can use the occassion of Axl's birthday to "do a good deed" or something.  Just a little something extra at this point in time.

Karma can be a bitch BUT it can also be a very beautiful thing.  :)

P.P.S.  Happy Birthday Axl!  :birthday:

Cool that people find ways to show their appreciation to Axl on his 50th birthday. Personally I think I will go for Twitter. This has several benefits: 1) Anyone, anywhere can join in 2) Messages will reach Axl directly (even if he might not be able to read all of them) 3) This will be noticed by more people than just GNR fans if enough people use the right #tags. Some suggestions: #HappyBirthdayAxlRose #Axl50, could additionally use #GNR as well.

Noticed on twitter and facebook that they`re following @BrazilFound, i think without them actually saying it they`ve answered any questions about a specific charity to donate to for Axl`s birthday www.brazilfoundation.org if people want to check it out : ok:

I have no connection to Brazil whatsoever but otherwise that website looks credible as well as the stuff they do. I suppose that's going to be my pick

Someone needs to get organised and save quite a few copies to be sent all around the world. I'm quite happy to pay enough extra through PayPal or so for this
