I wonder if there'll be a performance or just an interview? Also wonder how long he'll get on the show. It'd be great if he got more than one segment. I'm obviously biased but I think he should be the only guest that night. I mean, how often does Axl go on late night talk shows? Take advantage of that shit! Either way, awesome! Can't wait!

This will be a fun interview.  Of course the late night show interviews always take a humerous slant, and I'm sure Axl will have a few funny stories to share.  It doesn't say anything about a performance, so I wouldn't count on that.  Would be cool if they did though, and maybe do some type of medley with WTTJ and Better or something like that.  Live performances are always the best promotion for concerts.

Didn't Eddie claim that he 'was going to ask all of the tough questions' or something like that?  It was cool to see Axl interview again, but that interview was awful.  I think the only person who would not be afraid to ask him tough questions anymore is Howard Stern.

But anyways, I'll be watching the Kimmel interview for sure.  I am curious to see what happens.

Yeah exaxtly. Hopefully, Jimmy Kimmel takes this as an opportunity to show America just how funny and good-natured a guy Axl can be. I gotta believe that will be the motivation as I can't imagine Axl/Beta/Fernando agreeing to anything that they think would be overtly "gotcha" in nature (i.e. overly focused on Slash, break-up of Old Guns, etc.)...

Anyway- great opportunity and thanks Axl for putting yourself out there! Have fun with it man!!

yeah, but Kimmel is on the west coast where Axl will be at that time in preparation for the upcoming shows. So geographically it makes more sense than flying across the country to go on Fallon and then flying back to do the shows.

So I told my boss that I may be late to work on the 25th and why. She told me to record it.  I had no words to describe why I want to see it live.  Of course I'm going to record it! But I need to see it live too!

I then told her that it'll probably get cancelled last minute, and silently made plans to stock up on Red Bull for the morning of the 25th.  I'll stay up late to watch it dammit, and I'll be to work on time.  : ok:

They all stay away from the touchy subjects.  All late night talk shows are run the same, as far as the interviews are concerned.  The guests are pre interviewed, so they pretty much set the stage for what is going to be asked/discussed.  So I wouldn't expect any great revelations or anything.  It's just a way for Axl to promote himself, the band, the Vegas shows, etc., and have some fun while doing so.

I think you're generally right, but I'd argue that Letterman actually enjoys digging into the touchy subjects with his guests.  Half of his schtick is making his guests uncomfortable.  Regardless, though, I think Kimmel's a good choice.

Title: Re: Axl on Jimmy Kimmel live
Post by: faldor on October 01, 2012, 11:26:12 PM

The biggest problem with Axl going on Stern, is the timing.  I can't see Axl giving an interview at 8am.  Unless of course he was up from the night before.  Stern would give him the ability to speak freely for as long as he'd like pretty much.  IF that was something Axl was interested in doing.  If he ever REALLY wanted to let loose and get some points across.  That'd be the place to go.  Of course that could end up backfiring depending on what is said.  An interview like this (Kimmel) is much safer and good for promotion.  I just don't think we'll get anything substantial out of it.  But it'll be fun to see, and that's all that really matters.

I know this has been mentioned before, but it would be great to see Axl on Piers Morgan.  Piers mentioned nice things about Axl during the HOF fiasco, and while some of you may have strong feelings against Piers, he does a nice interview and would get more in depth.  If Axl is going promo, go full out and do Piers as well!

axl on jimmy kimmel's show will be fun to see. i think every fan should be happy that axl is becoming more available in the public eye and genuinely seems to be enjoying his life, his work and his band again. that said, the late night talk show circuit is an entertainment machine. shouldn't expect hard hitting questions or revelatory answers. then again, we may be surprised at anything when it comes to axl rose, so who knows?

but purely of my own request and conjuration i would love to hear an in-depth interview with axl by terry gross. prob'ly my favorite interviewer ever. a sit-down with tavis smiley would also be pretty cool. his questions are very thoughtful and evocative.

i'm not much of a fan of charlie rose. he frustrates me and i don't appreciate the way he interrupts his guests while they are trying to answer his questions. i think he is sincere, but he comes across as trying to lead people to the answers he wants to hear. imo, his format and style works best in a round table discussion with several guests at once, not a direct one-on-one interview. also, i suspect he is functionally snockered most of the time he is on the air. just a hunch.

not my first choices, but i wouldn't complain to see rose v rose.

I can't wait for this, but I think people are expecting too much. It's a comedy show, Axl will be on for 10 minutes, they'll throw some jokes around, and talk about the Residency. It's not going to be "in depth", it's just gonna be a fun show. (I only bring this up, because you know there'll be people bitching about how Jimmy didn't ask the "right questions" and blah blah blah....

it will most likely be a short interview. We'll have to wait to see what other guests are on the show that night. If Axl is the first guest, typically they get the most time. The last guest gets the least. If they have really big stars, sometimes they only book 2 guests or the 3rd guest gets very limited time. In very rare occurrences they only have 1 guest and devote the whole show to him/her. So when the other guests are announced it will be a little easier to gauge what might be in store.

I'm sure they'd love for Axl/GNR to perform as well, but there's been no mention of that so far.

Yes, I get the feeling that this interview will be a quick, light hearted chat. Other than the Vegas residency being discussed, I can't really see anything else being thoroughly discussed. It's a shame for us GN'R fans, as naturally we are going to want it to be longer with lots of detail. But at least it's something from Axl, so I'll take it and enjoy it all the more.

What's it got to do with "owing" anything - just while he's still got the looks he might as well flaunt them. He's still a good looking man.
As for laying himself bare - well I'd be the last to complain if that's what he wished

I think being the frontman of a band called Guns N' Rose means your fanbase is always going to have questions.  I don't think any rational fan thinks Axl owes them anything.  But, given the circumstances surrounding this band for nearly the past 20 years, it certainly isn't hard to understand why so much is asked of him when the opportunity presents itself.

It's on at midnight in the US.

So that would make it early morning over here.

US viewers can watch full episodes online. I don't think it's live streaming though...

It also appears that the full episode is is available the nest day online, so no waiting period. Non-US residents should be able to view it if they watch it through a proxy. Pretty Easy to do, just google it. (I live in the US watched the Olympic coverage through the BBC's website because NBC's coverage sucked, only took a few minutes to set up, I'll do some searching later on today and post the instructions on how to watch.)

Of course we're gonna want more ... because we're all fanatics! We'd be stealing Axl's garbage and looking for toe nail clippings given the change.

I'm sure whatever it turns out to be will be great!

They haven't posted the schedule for next week, so they haven't said who the music guest is yet, or if Axl's the only interview. The closer the dates get to Vegas, I wonder if they're going to be calling in to radio stations in LA and Las Vegas.

I think its safe to say Axl is the main guest and will get the most time

I'm seeing "the Whigs" listed as performers, not Ciara. But yes, it would appear Axl will be the lead guest and won't perform. He may get 2 segments. Would be nice to see him for more than 5 minutes.

You should definitely start a welcome back chant.  It's on television and it would stand out.  How many guests get that on a late night show??

Not many.  They're pretty strict at those shows, at least I think.  They don't really like the crowd to get involved, at least not in that manner.

He was asked if he votes and who he'd vote for. He said he's never really voted but if he did he would lean democratic and lean towards voting for Obama.

I think Eddie Trunk was too paranoid of saying something to piss him off, and Axl was able to tell that. Jimmy was far more laid-back and wasn't afraid of cracking jokes. This often leads to a much more relaxing environment for the interviewee (though it runs the risk of having people who just don't get it, and either clam up or straight up walk out).

It was terrific to see him laughing as he answered questions, especially about keeping the corn rows. Hopefully we will see some more interviews like this where he is laid back and relaxed, especially enjoyed that it wasn't all about music and we got to see more of his personality. He would have felt the love from the audience for sure.

I think the public perception of Axl would be much more favorable if he did interviews like this more often. The media paints such a negative picture of the guy, but during the rare times he is interviewed or makes an appearance somewhere, he always comes across as a very genuine, warm-hearted, fun-loving dude with a great personality and sense of humor.

If only I could get invited to one of Axl's Halloween parties!!

As for the interview, I loved the story of the Halloween tree. I've done a few similar things to other parents through the years ... Good to see Axl in such good spirits, as well as seeing Bumblefoot helping out the house band! Perfect end of the day for me!

Uhhhhh I don't know dude, Conan is hilarious as is Craig Ferguson (although Ferguson was funnier before he sobered up).  But to be honest, I don't think Axl would have done well on a show like Conan or Ferguson where they are very witty and are really just wise asses more than anything else.  Kimmel doesn't berate anyone like those guys do sometimes, but rather he just teases them.

Axl was gorgeous and charming as ever. (did Kimmel want Axl to kiss him when he said he wanted to be able to tell people he caught strep from Axl?)

Bumblefoot was funny and so cool that he played with the house band the entire show.  (I'm surprised that it seemed that Kimmel never before saw a double-neck guitar like Ron used)

Only thing ... I think maybe Frank should legally change his name to Fe-rah-rah cause Axl got one serious mental block when it comes to saying the name Ferrer (I think he's only pronounced it correctly once in the entire time Frank's been in the band)  :hihi:

He did seem embarrassed to say he never voted, and had a "go with the flow" attitude. I also think because most musicians are in unions, they tend to be Democrat voters.

As for the responses to Axl's politics I find it relieving he's not out there preaching on who to vote for.. The fact that he stated he was leaning towards Obama really doesn't qualify as trying to persuade others. I recall back in the 90's Ross Perot temporarily dropped out and Axl stated now we have a race and dedicated DTJ to Bill Clinton and George Bush..now if Eddie Vedder and others could follow suit..

I was happy to see Axl getting out there again. He looked good and happy and in good spirits. I think Kimmel is great, but thought the interview was a little too cheesy and that he was not really prepared with any good questions. I am glad Kimmel stayed away from the old GNR questions, but I would have liked to hear some stories from the road from the last few years. There must be some great stories to tell, maybe talk a little bit more about the Vegas shows, talk about all the jewelry he wears, if he has a girlfriend, ever wants to have kids, etc. I felt Kimmel was stuck on the being late thing and was nervous to ask anything that may annoy Axl. I hope Axl had a good time and does more of these types of interviews, because his fans really want to see more of him. I would love to see him host and play Saturday Night Live one day.

In Kimmel's defense, the guests usually set the tone for the direction of the interview.  They are pre interviewed by the staff to find out what they want to talk about.  So my guess is, Axl said what he wanted to say, for the most part.  That's just the way these late night talk shows operate.  If Axl really wants to open up and let loose, an arena like The Howard Stern Show would be more appropriate.  There he'd have free reign to talk about everything under the sun for an hour plus.  Going on Kimmel was the safe choice to promote the upcoming shows, himself, and the band.  Overall, mission accomplished.  : ok:

: ok:

As much as I like Stern I don't think that would be a good interview for Axl. Slash was on Stern back in May and then went on Opie and Anthony right afterward. O&A mentioned when he left that he was very upset about the Stern interview and all the old Guns questions. So I imagine it really wouldn't go over well with Axl.

It was cool to see Axl get such a warm response.  I don't really care for Kimmel, but overall, I enjoyed it.

Of course O&A would say that when it comes to Howard.

Axl knows what kind of show Howard does, if he's going on there, it's because he's ready for anything to be asked, and Howard doesn't have guests on the show that want to know questions ahead of time. If he says "no Slash questions", Howard will respect his wishes. If Slash had said "no Axl questions", same would've happened.

Yes, but I also don't think Howard pays much to attention to these suggestions guests put forward about what to ask and not ask. We read some of Slash's in one of these threads. Yes, Slash should have expected it. But I'm saying Axl should avoid the Stern show unless he wants a lot of discussion about old Guns and why they're not together. Stern isn't avoiding that subject no matter what.

Anyway, back on topic. I've watched the Kimmel interview 3 times now and it's still great. Thanks Axl  : ok:

Love the Howard Stern show, but I don't think it would be much of an interview due to Sterns lack of GN'R knowledge..I'm sure he knows the hits but I often cringe when he brings up a band and knows very little about them...

I remember Axl used to have a deep deep bass voice. Does he change it on purpose?

Are you serious? After this, that's what you have to say? WTF.
it was just a question relax. The interview was fun. It was just an observation.  I've been following Axl for 23 years and his voice sounded different to me.

I hope Axl decides to not leave it too long before doing another TV appearence like this, it's perfect promotion for GN'R. The audiences reaction on Kimmel was amazing, and something I've never really seen on a talk show.

Oh I agree, as much as I love Stern and would love to hear Axl interviewed by him, I don't think it would be a good idea UNLESS he wanted to let loose about the past.  Since that doesn't seem to be a priority right now, shows like Kimmel work better for him.  Howard has said though, he'd give Axl free reign to talk about whatever he wanted if he ever came on the show.  And Gary said he had been in touch with his publicist, but at the time he wasn't interested in doing press.  Howard told him to keep working on it.  He's fascinated by Axl, in more ways than one.  But obviously, the majority of the interview would be about Slash.  At least, that's where Howard would try to steer it.  And he's the best when it comes to getting guests to talk about things they don't want to talk about.

For now, these lighthearted interviews serve the purpose.  Shows the man is human.  He's not the evil prick people make him out to be.  A little goodwill can go a long way.

It would have been nice if you'd mentioned that the first time! Another thread where someone says something insane in an otherwise positive environment.

Actually, if you listen to old shows you will hear he often has a high non-bass voice.

If anything, his voice should go a little bit lower with age.

The high voice at Kimmel is a result of his light mood I presume. He seems very relaxed and happy, while in some of the old talks he is much more consentrated, focused and has a darker mood which change the voice.

It is not the way it went with Axl. The Kimmel staff never spoke with Axl. They were told by me that they could ask whatever they felt it was appropriated. Axl looked happy and relaxed, He also seemed to be very happy when he announced the names of the band and they all got a big cheer! That made him happy I think. Only one thing I wish was asked and that's a simple, "Any plans for new material in the future?" but great interview, and nice to see Axl in good spirits! : ok:

Well it's simple enough if people want to do it... :hihi:

Put up your Halloween tree, with all of the decorations until say the end of November. Then keep the tree up, but just change the decorations to suit the festive period. If anything it will just give you more time to prepare things to your taste, and give you alot of room for changes.

Axl has the right idea!!!... ;D

Nothing groundbreaking, but I thought this was pretty cool.  I went onto www.ctnow.com to check and see if I could find out some information on how the southern part of the state is faring from the Hurricane.  I'm SUPPOSED to go down that way for work tomorrow, so I just wanted to make sure roads weren't closed off, streets flooded, etc.  Anyway, I happened to catch a glance at the Top Stories on the site and the first 5 were all Hurricane related.  The 6th was about Axl's appearance on Kimmel.  Not bad, a week later.  And it was positive too.

Here it is in case anyone cares.

http://www.ctnow.com/entertainment/la-et-st-axl-rose-jimmy-kimmel-obama-20121025,0,510470.story

Axl Rose makes rare TV appearance on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live'
By Meredith Blake

Sure, Jay Leno had President Obama on his show Wednesday, but for children of the '90s, it was Jimmy Kimmel who scored the night?s biggest booking: Guns N? Roses star Axl Rose.

In his first live television appearance in 20 years, the famously temperamental singer was in an unusually gregarious mood.  There were no tantrums, no surly answers, and no badmouthing of former bandmates. Instead, Rose came off as a benevolent rock-n?-roll Santa Claus. He told Kimmel about charming the neighborhood kids with a Halloween tree and ended the segment by handing out Tommy?s Burger Truck gift certificates to the studio audience.

?I thought it would be something fun,? he said. ?Fun??! This from the guy who used to incite riots onstage?

It was nice, if strange, to see the once reclusive Rose cheerfully promoting his band?s upcoming residency at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Somewhat more disappointing, at least for those of us who spent untold hours of our adolescence watching and rewatching homemade VHS recordings of the ?November Rain? video (ahem), was Rose?s get-up.

Gone was the long, strawberry blond hair, the Sgt. Pepper jacket and the red kilt, replaced by a chin-length bob, jeans and ? eek! ? a white button-down.  It wasn?t all bad, though: There was a blue bandanna peeking out from underneath his wide-brimmed black hat, just enough to remind us of the glory days.

Kimmel, who?s not exactly known as a tough interrogator, stuck to soft questions: He didn?t ask Rose about his refusal to attend the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony this spring, where Guns N? Roses was being honored, and he made only glancing references to Rose?s contentious relationship with nearly all his former bandmates. Anyone hoping for a Barbara Walters-style teary confessional will be disappointed.

Kimmel did, however, ask Rose to weigh in on the presidential election. Rose admitted he?s not much of a voter because ?I'm in California, and it usually leans Democratic, and that's usually where I'm leaning anyway," he explained.  Pressed a little harder by Kimmel, Rose said, "I would lean Obama."

Axl, we?ll forgive you for not voting if you promise to come back to TV again soon ? and maybe perform a song next time.

Catching up on The Howard Stern Show from this week and Howard talked to Jimmy Kimmel about going on his show (Tuesday night). Shuli was sitting in and mentioned the Axl interview from last week. Said it was great. Howard said Axl was supposed to call into the show but didn't. Jimmy then said that he talked to Axl about the Stern Show and he said he enjoyed calling in back in the day. He also said that Axl wasn't fond of Slash. Sounded like he asked him some questions off camera.

I have it taped, its only 40 seconds. If I can figure out how to share it I will. Having trouble uploading it to youtube at the moment. But that's basically all that was said.

Edit

Here it is, in case anyone cares.  I explained it pretty well, but in case you want to hear it for yourself.

Perfect... everything about this interview was spot on, can't stop watching it. Also loved how Ron used his doubleneck on the show, instead of a random guitar that was just handed to him... think about it, that guitar has been all over the world with GN'R this last 2 years.  8) 8) 8)

Ana Gasteyer is a customer of mine at the video store I have managed for 20 years in Brooklyn. When I heard she would be on Kimmel the same day as Axl she happened to come in the store right before she left for L.A. She knows about my love for G N' R and Axl over the years and when she came in the store she spoke to my mom who also works at the video store and my mom half jokingly told her to tell Axl I, "the guy with the Use Your Illusion tattoo" said hi. I officially met Axl briefly in 2006 - and have been to 19 G N' R shows since 2001, and at the first ever Vegas show I showed him my tattoo during Rocket Queen where he brought Tommy to the front of the stage to take a look at it. I've had many many cool moments at shows with Axl since over the years; peacing back to me in Albany during Paradise City, playing the Asshole Song after I requested it in London, On in 2010...and many others. Ha. Anyway when I met him in 2006 I showed him my tatt again and said he might have remembered me from the first show in Vegas - his face immediately lit up and he said excitedly "oh yeaaaaah!!!!" Very cool moment.
Anyway Ana wound up giving me a shout out on Kimmel and today was the first time I had seen her since her appearance. She brought me a copy of the Kimmel itinerary and on the back was Axl's autograph to the video store! So cool! She told me she spoke to him after her segment and apparently he got a real kick out of her shout out to me and remembers me. Ha. Anyway, thank you Ana and thank you Axl! Really made my night at work!

Thanks for sharing your awesome story! Please tell Ana how much I loved her in WICKED in Chicago. I was fortunate enough to see her perform one day with Ben Vereen as the WIZARD and it was magical! Almost as good as a GNR show! :hihi:  I saw Ana in that show at least 10 times! she was a great Elphaba!
