Well, that sucks on the one hand. On the other it shows that damn many people still care a lot for GN'R.

Is there any possibility of finding out how much it sold in other countries and worldwide?

Let me put this in perspective for some of you.

You know that queer hush puppy George Michael? He is making a big comeback whateverwhogivesafuck. His album cam out the same week as the GNR GH album.

Yes the GH album sold 25,000 copies. You want to take a venture on how much the number 1 position album sold (and yea it was from the queer guy's)?

$60,000.

Chew on that for awhile.

to chew on what? on you having problems with george michael being gay, or what? why don`t you chew on the facht that this is a greatest hits which sold 25.000. Patience (the name of michaels cd) is not a GH cd. so what is your point?

Dude I dont have a problem with any motherfucker who is gay.

Shit fool Im a lesbian, so sit down.

GNR was at the top of the music game. It is a little wrong to have these numbers when some queer pop act has numbers that are more then double, GH album or not. As a reference, find yourself the numbers of how much Nirvana's GH sold.

Not to argue semantics but according to dictionary.com

lesbian=A woman whose sexual orientation is to women.

Not to mention it isn't a "comeback CD" as you claim. In fact it is the last one he (or so he claims) is releasing with any record company. After that he will give his music to his fans for free online. And..at least he has his shit together enough to make an album and fuckin' release it! I've been waiting for his follow up album for sometime now.

I don't get comparing the two anyway.

This goes to show that Axl should release CD..people would pick it up quick.

Good detective work Kujo. I hope you didnt take too much time out of you busy day looking that up.

Wow really, that is what a lesbian is? Well, cover me in shit and call me a sunday. Pffff...

Anyway, alright great GNR sold 25,000 in the UK. I have to find out how much Nirvana sold there in the same time period.

Maybe Kujo, you can put all your many resources to good use and find that out.

The release date is still March 23rd in North America, right?

Less than a week to go.  I will definitely be picking up two copies... one for my car, and one to remain in it's original plastic wrapping for the rest of eternity.

I'm weird that way, I suppose.

But 25,000 copies in one day, for a band with hasn't released material as of late (understatement of the year) is quite good, in my opinion.

So much for boycotting the f*cker :)

Jesus Christ....

I didn't write anything stupid. If anything, the both of you geniuses did. You obviously newer GNR fans just didn't get the inside joke. But I'll explain so you don't both hurt yourselves.

Axl had a shirt he liked to wear at shows that read "Nobody knows I'm a lesbian"

And yes Callgula lesbians would help. They always do.

That's alot, 25,000 copies in half a week in the UK alone.  Should sell a couple of million worldwide, and don't forget albums don't sell as many as singles.

So, in other words, the .057 percent of the GnR fans who still actually care about the band went out to purchase GH in support of their hero, Axl Rose.

Cmon, people.  We're bragging about an album selling 25,000 on its first day.  Did you hear that?  25,000.  Thats nothing.  I can't believe how some of you still carry on about GnR "taking over" the rock world again.  This band is a novelty act and a nostalgia act...and thats all Axl will ever be from here on out.  If you don't believe me, then get a copy of the '88 Ritz show....THAT was Axl Rose....THAT was GnR.  Axl is a middle-aged man and he knows his glory days are behind him...thats why he's so afraid to release anything and be dismissed as a vital artist.  He knows that if that happens, he'll become the new David Lee Roth...a joke...a former great, fallen from glory.

At this point, I don't think we'll ever see CD.  Then why keep following GnR?  Because its interesting, I guess.  I don't really have any more expectations left....I just follow GnR because its more interesting than most anything else going on in the music world today.

No matter how many extra copies you buy for coffee coasters and such, it'll take some really good PR to generate good sales.

I cant believe that Norah Jones' latest album sold 1 million copies in its first week - I'm still baffled by that...

Hmmm... people here have been saying Axl should release CD now with how well GH is selling, but all the GH album does is remind everyone how good the OLD band was, it doesn't give any credit to Axl's new band which he's been working to build up over the last few years.

With Axl suing Geffen over GH's release, I hardly think he's gonna use it as a springboard to launch CD.

I could be wrong though...

Yeah it does suck that it is selling because none of the members wanted it. Yeah it does show how people still want Guns N' Roses around. I wonder if it will break into the charts in the US and how many will sell? If this sold 25,000 I think CD will do pretty good once it ever comes out this year.  : ok:

what happend to all the nay sayer saying the album would flop and it would be histories biggest flop and shit

I'll admit to being a bit of a pessimist as to it's success.  But (like most self-centerd americans) I was really referring to the American market.  Hopefully it will do as well as it did in Ireland.  But I'm reserving my pessimism.

I was watching watching Top Of The Pops on BBC1 last night and that MTV guy who presents it was talking about the album chart and he said "blah blah... will the Vines or Guns N' Roses be able to knock Katie Melua off the top spot?"

I nearly choked on my tea.  :o

See GN'R still can rule the world and it looks good for Axl as well maybe his confidence has boosted with the record sales its gotta mean something I still do think Chinese Democracy will come out just because Buckethead has left does not mean the end. Izzy left after recording the Illusion stuff and got a new guitarist Gilby its quite similar to that if you think about.

It has officially reached number 2 in the UK charts.  Which is brilliant. Just proves to all those doubters who thought it would be the biggest mistake.

This is a release from a band that has had the world against it from day one.  This has had no promotion from the band, non of the usual tv appearences (ever in the uk) not even support from the original GN'R.  Has just been sold on the name and the music those guys created more than 10 years ago.

Not many people could do that.  It's easy to forget how huge GN'R were.

......But i swear if i see some snotty kid wearing a Darkness t-shirt and GNR gear there will be war lol

No2 in the UK and No. 1 in Ireland. Very good so far!

no doubt the two GN'R weeks on Kerrang have helped.

It also goes to show you how much of an asset the GN'R name is to him and to the bands future sales.

Axl would probobly object?

Does anyone else think, that when CD is being promoted, ads etc, the new members of the band will not be prominent?

I have a feeling that it will be marketed using the name and axls image alone. Just a thought.

Not sure if this is correct thread.....I live in the US and received my GH cd on Saturday from musicspace.com. Digipak with free poster. (original 5 members) Wasn't gonna buy it, but thought if it sells well enough maybe it will get CD out sooner rather than later.  Anyway, GH seems to be selling pretty well in the rest of the world, curious how it will do in the US.  Kinda scared this may be the nail in the coffin of Gn'R though.  I have seen the commercial on MTV and ESPNews this weekined though.  But as with the majority of us, track listing is ok.  Would have taken off Since I dont have you and put Estranged on, added Don't Damn Me and made Sympathy a bonus track.  Anyway take care and have a great day....

25000 copies in first day, that's great.
why?
as we know every rnr fan older than 18 have three gnr albums(afd, gnr lies and uyi 1,2),and they won't to buy gnr greatest hits, but they'll buy chinese democracy.
I'm a gnr fan,but i won't buy gh,because i have every gnr album,and i make my greatesthits!
and comparing gnr and nirvana is stupid, because gnr is truly big rnr band

Ok ok - your right I saw the add on the friday evening before it came out but it was the only time I saw it on terrestrial tv, then my bloke was like oh yeah its in Kerrang but I mean in comparison to the usual hype that album releases receive and I especially mean when it was released on the same day as GM who had been on chat shows to promote.

And I also mean knowing about it as a normal person as opposed to an obsessive fan ie 2 of my friends had no idea it was out but as soon as i told them they rushed out to buy it.  What I am saying unless youre a huge GnR fan you could easily have missed its release date as it was not hyped and advertised in the normal way.

2nd best is TSI?, which was at #2 for two weeks. The UYI's peaked at #2 and #3 for one week, Lies made it to #6, AFD only to #10 and Live Era at #17.

First of all let me start you off with a quote:

Based on the first day sales, the Greatest Hits is on track to sell over 120,000 copies in the USA in the first week.

Source: Hits Magazine

Now as you can see the Guns N' Roses:Greatest Hits  album has been an overly succesful around several countries around the world topping the charts and getting into the top 5 in almost every European country out there. The album has sold 113,000 copies in the UK in just 1 week. Now the UK population is 60 million. The US population is 283 million. Guns N' Roses has sold 80 million records woldwide to date,40 million in the US alone. Well when I saw the uote above this paragraph I was thinking how well will this album chart in the USA?

Well I did some research and some steady mathematical research.

According to this article:

http://www.billboard.com/bb/daily/article_...t_id=1000470598

"Norah Jones' "Feels Like Home" holds the top spot on The Billboard 200 for a sixth-straight week. U.S. sales of the Blue Note set were down about 19% to 147,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan"

The week before U.S sales for the album weew down about 27%. That is an 8% percent "increase" in the loss of album sales for Norah Jones. Well what I did was:

-subtract 8 from 19 which equals 11%

-multiplied 147,000 by .11 and reached the product of 16,170

-I then subtracted 16,170 from 147,000 reaching to an answer of 130,830

That is the most percentage Norah Jone's album will increase meaning I have drawn out a best case scenario for her and a minimal for GN'R. If Guns N' Roses sell over 130,000 copies of the Greatest Hits album then they will clame fame to number 1 surpassing 'The Spaghetti Incident?"  from the band's heydays.

Now take a look at this quote:

"Cassidy's "Split Personality" (Full Surface/J Records) lands at No. 2 with 118,000 copies."

GN'R already has surpassed the number #2 album Split Personalityby a minimal case scenario made by Hits Magazine based on first day sales.

"Godsmack's seven-song mini-album "The Other Side" (Universal) enters the chart at No. 5 on sales of 98,000 copies".

^^^^^
What that means is that the Greatest Hits album will be in the Top 5 as proven by clear scientific and mathematical research done by me above re-enforcing the fact of the album at being a top 10 hit as the number 10 album Josh Groban's Closer (Reprise) rounds out the top-10 with sales of 67,000 copies will be outsold by more than double its sales.

If 113,000 copies were sold in the UK,a land mass with 60 million inhabitants, in a week then we can expect 130,000 copies from the U.S.A,a landmass with 283 inhabitants and the buyers of 40 million GN'R records.

What this will d is smack all the GN'R non-believers in the face by proving this band is very much still alive. The band itself isn't alive but the fans keep the legend of Guns N' Roses roam strongly through the musical ages.

Title: Re: The Greatest Hits chart positions thread
Post by: axls#2 on March 24, 2004, 09:18:39 PM
The thing with doing projected sales is you can't really get a feel for a fan base...norah jones and the others may be picking up fans everyday because of airplay, while gn'r airplay is probably pretty low . I would like to see how it ends after a month or so, but this does tell me that their are quite a few fans, and many of the hardcore fans are not buying because they probably have most if not all of the songs. This should really give axl and the record company some confidence. I'ts amazing what a little promotion will do. I should also point out that many stores aren't even carrying gh yet. They are probably waiting to see how it sells, so I don't think their will be a real sharp dropoff next week. I went to a Wal-Mart superstore and target and they didn't even have it in stock yet.

The key to judging thier selling power will be how long it can remain there....

where can i read about selling Gh in USA?i read lot of european charts, but could someone tell what's goin on in USA?

Greatest Hits is duking it out with NERD for #4 on the charts.  Usher is coming in at #1, and I guess Norah and Evanecense are #2 and #3?  It's going to play out something along those lines.

Norah Jones sells 1 mill in her first week, and Usher might sell 90k in his first week, I REALLY don't see a problem with music sales.  :o

I bought the GNR album the day it came out, alot of people must of. Came at me as a surprise too, hadn't been on this sight in ages and all of a sudden I find the GH is out.

Anyone know when it comes out in america and why it hasn't been released there yet.

Hopefully the good sales will give some incentive in to realsing the new album.

That's only 44.02% counted (109,163 copies). That count was made today( Monday). The final 66% will be counted tomorrow (Tuesday). So the Guns N' Roses:Greatest Hits album will have sold about 200,000-300,000 copies in its first week in the U.S. Although it will still be #3 on the Billboard charts.

usher has a brand new album with the number 1 song and a second song already in the top 20

gnr had zero new material, it was barely promoted and still sold over 172,000 copies

if that isnt a sign that c.d. will move over 500,000 first week nothing is

imagine a kick ass single, a new cd promotion etc, it will sell thru the roof

surely this has to make axl smile

gnr arent a joke fuckers they are still relevant!

i picked up aerosmiths new cd today as well as a country cd tracy lawrence, i saw gnr's greatest hits sittin there on the shelf smilin at me, and even though ive burnt way better greatest hits i was paralyzed by my loyalty to GNR and i bought the fuckin thing anyway

If it doesnt show Axl a reunion would be the best thing, I agree with D, it at least shows the name has marketing power. But with every misstep, how much of that marketing power is lost?
Also like D, I too went to pick up the new Aersomtih (which is AWESOME), and was blinded into buying GH. When you actually listen to it, the playlist flows pretty good.

it is obvious that the world loves the original band:

Axl Rose
Slash
Duff
Dizzy
Izzy
Steven

The world has spoken. It really is amazing. I remember back in the 93-97 ERA the public was bashing the band as a whole. But now it is they love the ex-members and bash Axl. Which sadness me greatly. I know it is not Axl's fault. I really wish they could get someone to intervine because Duff and Slash are to blame. Izzy and Steven are also. This band if they were to regroup would be the biggest touring band in the world. They would not be able to reach the sound of this new band, but they would be every bit as cool as the Rolling Stones.

It is obvious that they work best as a unit. Slash and Duff have not been able to achieve success outside Guns. I do not think Izzy has tried.

I love the new members. Whether are not they are Guns is to be seen with an album release. That is most everyones policy. Until then the LiveERA group still sits in their kings chairs.

That is fair.

But wow. How can even Axl ignore the outpour of the chart topping GH's. The fans call for a new album, while they call for the LiveERA band to regroup. If both were done Guns would be huge again.

Greatest Hits = origianl band - origianl music - "the name"

it has nothing to do with the new band.

and no Jarmo this is not spam it is not bashing Axkl. I  LOVE AXL. it's the truth.

I'm sure the exmembers have a lot of water under the bridge. It would be extremely hard for them to mend the wounds. I say do not dwel on the negatives, but look at the positives they had. Even if the negatives outweigh the positives.

Sometimes the hard is what makes it great.

Guns n' Roses

GH debuted at number 9 when it first entered the charts in Australia and this week it's gone up to number 6.
I don't think that Live Era did very well in the charts here, I don't even think it broke into the top 40, so GH is doing pretty well in comparison.

GN'R is in 5 in Hungary this week. (They started in 40th, then came up to 9th).

In the best 10 there are only 3 non-Hungarian bands. George Micheal's Patience is 2, while The Rasmus's Dead Letters in 9.

Just to ad to my earlier post of GN'R remaining at No.2 in the UK, this week both ABBA's and Atomic Kitten's Greatest Hits entered the chart at positions 4 and 5 obviously showing that people would rather have GN'R greatest hits it's very impressive considering how popular ABBA were and despite being shite how popular Atomic Kitten are now, also The Bay City Rollers 'Best Of' album only entered at No.11, imagine if the tracklisting had been good and Axl had been behind it, hell id of bought it then and so would a lot more people

That's only 49.83% of total records counted. So by the time it reaches its final count it will probably be at around a 100,000 sales figure. Also last time this hitsdailydouble news source was off by 6,000 records last week compared to the Nielsen soundscan figures,so my prediction for this week's sales is 90,000-110,000 records.

Eamon, GNR Overtake U.K. Charts (http://www.billboard.com/bb/daily/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1000490885)

Eamon's recent No. 16 Billboard Hot 100 hit "F**k It (I Don't Want You Back)" (Jive) went straight to the top of the new U.K. singles chart yesterday (April 18). Meanwhile, the album survey welcomed some old friends back to No. 1 as Guns N' Roses surged to the top with its "Greatest Hits" (Geffen).

--

The Guns N' Roses compilation rose to No. 1 in its fifth chart week, replacing Anastacia's self-titled third Epic album at the top. The American rock band's only previous U.K. best-seller was "Use Your Illusion II," which spent a solitary week at the top in September 1991.

Guns are going up on the U.S. charts:

http://www.hitsdailydouble.com/news/newsPage.cgi?news05048

The article talks about Usher, Now!, and Hoobastank before mentioning Guns:

Likely following close behind in the 60k-70k range will be Guns N? Roses (Geffen), Jessica Simpson (Columbia), Janet Jackson (Virgin), Norah Jones (Blue Note) and Evanescence (Wind-up).

So I guess that means they could jump up to #4 in the U.S., but the way I read it, it seems that the positions for the 60k-70k group could vary.  : ok:

The GH CD ranked #5 at best in France (#7 last week), but in the country of cheese and wine, they rank regular albums and compilations on two different charts, so a compilation would not appear on the regular albums charts. GH ranked #5 in that compilations chart.

About GH?

If U ask me, I 'd say they're contributing US sales (imports). 8)

Japanese edition is (probably)
CCCD (not being an expert on the argument over this fuckin industry friendly stuff, I?m not going on about it here)
Price of 2490yen (about a triple of US EBay price!)
Same package to a import copy except a sticky badge
with liner notes, and lyrics in English and in Japanese that are hell shitty (unrefined) translations in taste wise all  the way.  :-X
Even English language haters, if any in GNR fans, would choose the imports.

Still this GH has done very well amongst Japanese domestic pop music. :smoking:

Yeah, # 8 in Spain. That is quite impressive actually. Spanish chart is usually full of spanish singers, obviously. There's hardly ever a rock band in the top 20. Metallica and maybe Linkin Park have reached the top 10, but Guns, having released nothing in ten years with the execption on Live Era in a country where the biggest selling artist comes from the spanish version of American idol, it's pretty fucking cool.

I read a review of the GH album last week. It was written on the " trendy" friday edition of the biggest selling newspaper in Spain" El P?is" I don't have it with me right now, but the critic gave the album a 4 out of 10. It did mention that if Guns had remained together and released a fucking rocker instead of the illusions albums, GNR would have been the biggest hard rock band in history of music. Also mentioned, if they had spent as much time on recording music as they did on drugs and booze,GNR would've a much bigger catalogue.

I'm sure some people have picked up the GH then decided "I want the rest of the tracks from Appetite"
or maybe it made some one who has the whole library on tape to go out and buy the CD's..........

Hopefully Appetite can push itself above Hootie and Alanis, I hate to see that 19 albums have sold better

It could have the opposite affect in the long run.  The average joe may just pick up the Greatest Hits and not bother getting the full CDs.

19 albums have sold better?  How many were debut CDs?

GUNS N' ROSES' "Greatest Hits" album (Geffen Records) has proven an enormous success for Universal Music International, shipping 1.2 million units across Europe within five weeks of release.

The album brings together 14 tracks spanning the entire career of the self-styled "most dangerous band in the world," from the era-defining "Appetite For Destruction" LP to punk-covers release "The Spaghetti Incident?"

Released internationally on March 15 (March 23 in the U.S.), the album has featured at the top of the charts in Austria, Finland, Ireland, Norway and the U.K. It is now two times platinum in Ireland & the United Kingdom, platinum in Norway and Switzerland, and gold in Austria, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy and Sweden.

"Greatest Hits" has also sold 1 million copies in the USA and Canada, peaking at No. 3 on the U.S. Billboard charts, and at No. 2 in Canada, and is gold in both territories. It is also two times platinum in New Zealand and gold in Australia, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan.

Platinum for CDs in Norway is 40.000 units. That is not bad in 5 weeks !!! I believe the Illusion sets has shiftet close to 150.000 each. I'm not so sure about Lies and Appetite, but I believe Lies has sold more than 75.000. And Appetite should have sold more, but not sure about that.

Actually Lies entered the Norwegian chart before Appetite, however Appetite was on the chart for 26 weeks, Lies only had 12 weeks on the chart.

Looks like it could be dropping off the No.1 spot in the UK it's been down in a number of shops and online lists, interesting though looking in Night & Day magazine (comes free w/ 'The Mail On Sunday') they had the album chart positions and had a picture of Axl saying Guns N' Roses are top of the album charts interesting thing though was the picture was from the 2002 VMA's, normally they show the old pictures so it was nice to have a recent one

Each week I get more and more amazed at the selling power of Guns N' Roses.

In the UK, albums don't last long at the top of the pile, they drop fairly quickly. Artists like D12 and Anastacia would be expected to be outselling GH easily.

Does anyone else think that the GH has had more success than you ever could have thought? I still can't believe the UK album charts. I don't know how far it's exceeded your expectation in other countries but in the UK it's unbelievable.

How long do you think its going to be before they bring out a greatest hits 2 disc?  With the sales that GH has had you know they are going to do it.  I can't believe GH has done so well because GNR have had only 3 real albums it would be almost cheaper to go and buy the 3 original albums then to buy GH lol.

GNR for fucking ever.

Unless they wanna cheat the fans a GH Disc 2 is pointless the title implies it is GN'R Hits, now i know the tracklisting was not great but how many singles/hits were left out?

Uh no, 55,000 is right, there's no way it sold 550,000 copies last week, the total is close to that, the most it's sold in a week was 180,000. And to the guy that asked why it's not gold on billboard, I think it's because the label has to apply for certification or something and they probably haven't gotten around to it yet.

Ah dude. Ofcourse there's no way it sold 550,000 copies in one week. The dude's sentence was gramatically goofy and I thought he said that in 6 weeks GN'R have sold 55,000 copies of the Greatest Hits album in the U.S,but now I just figured out he meant that in week number 6 it sold 55,000 copies. But yes the Greatest Hits album has sold around 500,000-600,000 copies in the U.S.

I'm originally from Serbia too. I can't believe you guys have no overseas official releases. That's shitty. That's a big GN'R country too.

As I'm writing this I've just realised that Serbia & Montenegro abreviates to S&M, how bout that  :hihi:

You have to admit all judgements aside. It has been fun seeing GN'R trample over the unexpecting world.  Proving all those non believers in music mags who can't say anything positive.

I think the record company should continue pushing it while it's still up there in the top 10. I mean with something like Big Brother starting in the uk - a couple of GH ad's in the first couple of weeks around the programme would be quite a good idea.

And as we all know GNR have the perfect summer music. When it's sunny and u have the BBQ on and cold beers with all your mates around - perfect lol

We should all buy one more at least think in terms of - One for downstairs, one for the car , maybe even one for upstairs too if your feeling a bit rich lol

Would be great to see it go back up on top just one more time even if it's just to piss everybody off lol   Maybe we could have VR and GNR in the top 10  at the same time - would be cool at least for those not taking "sides".  : ok:

should be interesting to see what velvet revolvers sales will be, also i wonder how much of the vr publicity has helped the GH's. But it's good to know that its selling so well in spite of the shitty tracklisting, makes you wonder where it would be with only one new song.

Does anyone know how many copys the greatest hits has sold in the USA.  I think it is at about 750,000 but could be wrong.  Anyway, if it keeps on selling 40,000 a week its going platinum.  I think it will. Any thoughts.

good news on the u.s sales this week, gn'r moves up 10 spots back up to #14, the biggest jump in the top 50, a 16 percent increase in sales from last week at 44,904.

http://www.hitsdailydouble.com/sales/salescht.cgi

but then i go and check billboard and it has it moving up 3 to 21, wonder which one is more accurate? i'm assuming billboard, but they don't list sales numbers.

Billboard's site usually makes the update on Thursdays or Fridays. What you're looking at is last week's chart. People have to remember that Billboard always takes time to put the numbers online and on magazines while hitsdailydouble is instant.

The Greatest Hits album is currently on the charts at #11 here in Canada.

As a side note, as making my cd purchases today (of 3 Contraband albums - giving my sister the chance to steal the instore poster - oh yeah!!  Stealing in the name of VR) the sales person commented that they are just about sold out of Contraband.  A lot of people had been coming in all day... buying 1, 2, or 3 copies.  Hope both bands continue to do well!!

Also hoping we weren't caught on any security cams :)

On the 13th week on the Finnish Charts Guns climbed a step to no 5.

Nice to see that people are still buying.

A bit off topic: A weird thing happened last week after the Metallica concert here: 6 Metallica albums climbed into the top40, and I don't know if there's ever been a similar case here  in Finland.

I suppose that a lot of people who bough the Greatest Hits are young people, teenagers, who didn't know the band 10 years ago because they were too young aren't they? They heard that Guns n' Roses is a legendary Rock band and so they bough this album to have their Hits. And the album is definitely a success. One of the best selling album of the year right now.
so....you know what?...This is very good for "Chinese Democracy"!  :peace:

Soundscan supplied these results. Soundscan shows what the customers bought from the stores.

RIAA only shows what the stores bought.

Example: Metallica's St. Anger was certifed 2X platinum a few weeks after it's release. At the same time Soundscan showed they only had sold 1 million units.

If the stores like the way these are selling I would not be suprised if GH'S is 2x's platinum when RIAA certifies it. That will put plenty of GH's on the shelves for customers to buy for the next year.

...which is roughly 1.5 x Platinum RIAA.  After Chinese Democracy gets released and they track the Soundscan figures, Geffen will purchase a full audit from the RIAA in order to buy the gold and platinum certificates.  So, don't be surprised if you see multiple certs awarded on one day for it and the back catalogue--which is cheaper in the long run.

Adding to what 5th was saying about St. Anger...Elektra purchased gold, platinum and double-platinum certs on 07/08/03 when, as of 07/07/03, it had only sold 1,073,374 Soundscan.

Madagas- I think the best place for free Soundscan numbers on a weekly basis is www.hitsdailydouble.com

Also www.metal-sludge.com does a check once in awhile of soundscan figures. Plus they have a past history to look at.

Other than that I think you have to subscribe and that cost $.

Like I said before, they will more than likely wait until after CD has been released before they buy a full audit.  They're also probably monitoring Soundscan sales for the back catalogue in order to better time a purchase.

Quote

I only see its Soundscan sales up to January of 2003 where it was around the 1,000,000 mark.  Conceivably, it could have sold up to, roughly, 1.5 million more--based on the fact it falls off/is on the bottom of charts from February onward AND sales of other chart-bottoming albums during those times (meaning, it sold under, roughly, 20K each week thereafter).

Like I said before, they will more than likely wait until after CD has been released before they buy a full audit.? They're also probably monitoring Soundscan sales for the back catalogue in order to better time a purchase.

Unless CD is too far into the future that they decide to do it sooner:

Yes... it had the second highest % change behind the Killers' CD.  It's also ahead of Velvet Revolver on this week's chart.  I wonder what caused this increase?  :-\

the "greatest hits" wins 13 places this week! it's 22 in the charts after 22 weeks? : ok:
I think the album is very likely to sell about 10 million copies worldwide in a year and will probably be the biggest Rock selling album of 2004. It has already sold about 6/7 million copies worldwide for 5 months...AND COUNTING! that's fantastic.

I have a question? If GH reaches 10 million world wide will it get a Diamond award?

Title: Re: The Greatest Hits chart positions thread
Post by: nesquick on August 28, 2004, 04:13:13 AM
I don't know. 10 million is fucking amazing in a year regarding the Guns n' Roses situation. I mean, there is no videoclips, no tour, and the band isn't the same at all right now. 10 million copies expected...just based on the past!
In my opinion, with videoclips on MTV, a tour, a new album with new material, singles on radiostations etc...a new album like "chinese democracy" could sell amazingly. Even if it is not the same band, the name "Guns n' Roses" is still there. And that's what is important. The name will help to sell records. I want "chinese democracy" to be a classic and one of the biggest selling album of all time.

I don't think so. Only if GNR reaches that figure in the US ( or I guess, in any particular country) will get the diamond award. GNR won't sell 10 million copies in a country other than the US though. Not even the UK.

it's great. I'm sure "chinese democracy" will be the best selling album of the year when it is released. The "greatest hits" makes great sales figures with just a few promotion. Si imagine a new GN'R album with a tour, singles, videoclips, interviews, commercials etc... a #1 for sure... 8)

I hope 10 million copies in the USA for "Chinese Democracy" and about 20 million copies worldwide within 2 or 3 years. It's possible if everybody works for it. If Norah Jones sold over 30 million albums worldwide between 2002 and 2005 without any special "big" promotion, Guns N' Roses (or whatever you call this new band) can sell 20 million albums within 2 or 3 years.

If it sells like 2 million copies (USA) and 5 millions copies (worldwide), that would be already big... But 20 million copies worldwide within 2 or 3 years? Even U2 or bands like that can't do that... I think you are very optimistic...

Anyway, I just want Chinese democracy, I don't care if it just sells 10 copies worldwide!

I hate to dredge up old threads, but this was the most appropriate spot for this post.  GH Vol. 1 has surpassed 2.5 million units sold in the U.S., correct?  The sentiment I've been feeling from most everybody, is that the more it sells, the more money Axl pulls in, thereby decreasing the pressure on Axl to pull the trigger on CD.

I don't agree with that thought.  Corrrect me if I'm wrong, but the record label has invested about 13 million dollars into CD, correct?  If GH has sold 2.5 million units in the US alone, aren't they pulling in money hand over fist?  World-wide, the units sold has to be several million...assume 3 1/2 million at an average of $13 per cd, that's $45,000,000 (45 million dollars)!  I'd imagine the label gets at least half that dough, which would give them a pretty damn good return on their investment (22.5 million $) even if it isn't Chinese Democracy.  Even if GH 2 pulls in half that money, the record compan(y/ies) will be very fat and happy with excellent return on their investment.

I don't know the specifics, but does all of that sound about right?  Please correct me if I'm wrong, but with that logic, I see no pressure on the record company or Axl for that matter to release Chinese Democracy.  The only pressure I see that's on Axl is the fact, like all of us, he is getting older, and he is a very physical performer.  If this is his only pressure, it aint much.  I can guarantee Axl doesn't give a damn about that and will be flying around the stage into his 60's if he so chooses.  I don't think Axl gives a damn about the money, it's about the art.

Can anyone give specific #'s on this?  Thanks, :peace:

If the greatest hits sold two million, maybe a volume 2 will be in the works...Or maybe a 5 CD boxset of unrelased songs, like Bon Jovi did, excpect all the songs wont suck.

LOL, thanks for reviving this thread.... Nixon is the new Miss Cleo!  Good call on Vol. 2.

Axl4Prez, I don't know the #'s, but I'm sure that they recovered a big chunk (if not all) of Chinese Democracy's recording costs with the Greatest Hits.  Re-releasing a bunch of songs is an easy way to make a quick buck.

Eazy E, thanks for the info., I hope heaven is treating you well and you are (N.W.)A.-Okay. :)

Seriously, even when it comes to this Vol. 2, they seem to be pretty fucking stupid.  The biggest shopping day of the year is in 3 days, it's known as Black Friday here in the US, the day after our holiday Thanksgiving.  The mass public has no idea this Vol. 2 is coming down the pike, and to me, Dec. 20th seems like a ridiculous release date.  If the execs. running this thing were on Donald Trump's Apprentice program, "YOU'RE FIRED!" would definitely be heard.   :hihi:

Any more specifics on the money figures guys and gals???  I know there are some people here with record company connections.  Just wondering, thanks.   :peace:

Greatest Hits is back in the top 50 in the U.S...  Guess its an easy thing to pick up in the holiday season:

-- 46 GUNS N'ROSES GEFFEN 39,662

It was at 92 on the Billboard chart last week, so that's a pretty decent jump for an album that's been out for almost 90 weeks.

It's been out for so long, when reporting on the charts, Hits Daily Double assumed it was a new release:

I thought that it would pick up around the holidays. I'm glad to see it sell this well. It's a shame that VR's album couldn't do that.

GH - a sucess.

Any album that stays on the charts for over a year and sells over 2 million copies within that year is a hit album. WIth all the album burning... it is a great sucess.

The Greatest Hits has been out for 100 weeks now, and I think it only fell out of the top 100 albums once...

It's at 86 this week:

I believe it is an album that is over two years old that has fallen out of the top 100, even though the chart itself is 200. So being #1 on that chart is still pretty solid, it most likely means it is still one of the top 200 selling albums in the country.

Just imagine when CD comes out, it will be back in the top 100 easy.

It was not a negative statement, it's a fact.

The link Christos posted says it's number 3 on the pop charts.  If it's not on the Top 100 then that means that the Pop Charts" are probably not worth a huge amount.

But I was thinking that perhaps someone who has some industry knowledge can fill us in on the details.

I KNOW they're two different charts. ?Hence the reason I mentioned that it was NOT on the Top 100. ?Sorry it was so confusing for you.

So if it's not on the Top 100, clearly it's not doing THAT well is it? ?Or are you suggesting that it IS selling well but there is some sort of conspiracy that means that Billboard don't list it on the Top 100? ?

If anyone actually knows what they're talking about, feel free to speak up. ? Otherwise just feel free to PM madagas or whatever his name was and talk about the vegetables they're serving in the institution. ?

Excepting holiday albums, once an album is two-years-old AND has fallen below the 100 position on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart, it is re-charted on the Billboard Top Pop Catalog chart.? It is more than likely out-selling current albums on the bottom half of the Top 200.?

The reason why I thought it was funny was because Greatest Hits has been out since early 2004 and yet 3 and a half years later it's sold/selling (I don't have any info about past sales for GH, other than the pop catalogue) more than a CD released by a 'supergroup' a month or two ago.

It was just an odd comment, I'm a fan of everyone associated here. I've contributed to both bands' sales  :peace:

I am sure it took a chunk out of UYI but I think AFD still sells about 3000 or so a week. The chart only goes to 25 unless you subscribe to Billboard then you can see the top 100. I imagine AFD is in the top 100 pop catalog sales.

As reported at Yahoo Music:

"For the second week in a row, Jack Johnson's Sleep Through The Static and Michael Jackson's Thriller 25 are the top two albums in the U.S. Or are they?

They are, if you look at the Top Comprehensive Albums chart compiled by Nielsen/SoundScan. Johnson is #1 for the week with sales of 105,000 copies, trailed by Jackson with 63,000 copies. (The gap between the two is wider than it was last week, when just 14,000 copies separated them.)

But Jackson is nowhere to be found on the list of Top Current Albums that is published each week (as The Billboard 200) in Billboard magazine. The top 10 from that chart is reprinted in countless newspapers and websites around the world, including this one. The reason for the omission, as I explained last week, is that Nielsen/SoundScan and Billboard exclude catalog titles-defined as albums that are 18 months old or older-from the main chart. (Continuously running "current" hits are exempted.)

The idea is to make more room on the chart for new albums, which need every break they can get. This week, the rule resulted in 31 older albums being removed from Top Current Albums and shifted over to Top Catalog Albums. Just four of these 31 titles would have ranked in the top 100: Thriller 25, which would have ranked #2; Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' Greatest Hits, #63; Guns N' Roses' Greatest Hits, #64, and Bob Marley & the Wailers' Legend, #84."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the 4.8 million sales for GH is for the US only.  CD sales of roughly 5 million is worldwide.  Sales in the US, last I heard were less than a million.  So the comparison should be between 4.8 million and less than a million.  Are you doubting CD sold 4+ million outside of the US?  We have to go with what we're told.

i know i meant there is no way its sold 5 million worldwide, im not bothered or having a pop at anyone i couldnt care less how much its sold i love it and thats all that matters, but the GH is still in the british charts and the american charts and it aint sold that many copies, chinese demo was in and out the charts very quickly in most countries obviously due to lack of promo

Exactly, GH has probably (just guessing here) sold around 10 million worldwide.

Wow, that's pretty impressive. Especially beating Michael's compilation considering the boost in sales following his death.

Amazon had the complete download of "Greatest Hits" on sale last week for only 25 cents.  Part of the same reason CD re-entered the charts last year, when it was $1.99.  Nice gift to share with friends who are new to GN'R anyway.  Everyone else probably has it already.  The tour and HOF had to have helped too!

Guns N' Roses' "Greatest Hits" makes an eye-popping jump from No. 31 to No. 3 after it was priced for 25-cents in both the Google Play and AmazonMP3 stores for one day last week. It sold 85,000 with a 618% gain (up from 12,000 the week previous).

Amazing how an album that is 8 years old, has been unapproved by the band/former band members and not promoted by them, is at #3 on the charts in 2012.

Seriously, let's just get it to number 1. That would be insanity.

Nope. That's still damn impressive for an 8 year old album that the band didn't even promote.

And it was already at #31 before the 25 cent sale.

Greatest Hits albums don't really need a lot of promotion.  Any fringe fans, or music buyers wanting to check bands out are usually going to go with the greatest hits.  Guns N' Roses is a pretty popular band with some pretty iconic songs, who just happens to be heading to the Hall of Fame next month.  Stands to reason their Greatest Hits would be a pretty good seller, which it has been ever since its release, regardless of who agreed with it being released.

The album was priced for 25-cents in both the Google Play and AmazonMP3 stores for one day last week, eventually going on to sell 85,000 copies ? 12,000 more than the week before.

? Guns N? Roses, Greatest Hits ? No. 135 ? The best-of album surpasses 6 million in total U.S. sales, as it sold another 4,000 copies in the week ending Dec. 28 (up 14 percent). The set's sales now stand at 6.002 million. The album was released in 2004, peaked at No. 3, and has spent 425 weeks on the list.

#37 on US iTunes album chart

#2 on European iTunes album chart

Maybe all the recent publicity because of Axl's tweets to Steve Mnuchin and Live And Let Die being played for Trump that made people buy it?
