Title: Sweet Child O' Mine voted greatest riff
Post by: oldgunsfan on August 11, 2009, 01:21:57 PM
GUNS N' ROSES anthem Sweet Child O' Mine has been voted greatest guitar riff in a music lovers' poll.
Rocker Slash's 1988 melody beat ERIC CLAPTON's '71 hit Layla.

AEROSMITH's Walk This Way was No3, MICHAEL JACKSON's Beat It came fourth and MOTORHEAD's Ace Of Spaces fifth in the poll of 5,000.

Rest of Top Ten: 6 Voodoo Child (Slight Return), The Jimi Hendrix Experience; 7 Another One Bites The Dust, Queen; 8 Smells Like Teen Spirit, Nirvana; 9 Smoke On The Water, Deep Purple; 10 American Idiot, Green Day.

The tune appears everywhere these days. I was watching a baseball game the other day and SCOM was played as they changed pitchers.

Though I might shuffle them around a bit, I agree with everything on that list except for American Idiot.  I like American Idiot fine, but I don't think it's stood the test of time.  Special kudos for including Eddie Van Halen's work on Beat It and for including a bass riff with Another One Bites the Dust!  :peace:

Another one bites the dust is not a guitar riff!  its bass!

I think the list sucks! What happened with Zeppelin, Sabbath and Metallica.  those bands are known for awesome riffs!

Seems a bit too mainstream but great to see Slash at numero uno once again!

You can vote for the solo in the same song in an Austrian poll at http://oe3.orf.at/mitreden/stories/380423/

Thanks Roland.

"Welcome To The Jungle" should be on that list also.

If you watch any kind of American sport on television, it's played all the time to pump up the crowd. In my area, you can't be at a Patriots or Celtics game without hearing the opening riff.

That's not a riff, since it is heard only once in the whole song.

How does that not make it a riff?

How does that not make it a riff?

From dictionary.com

a melodic phrase, often constantly repeated, forming an accompaniment or part of an accompaniment for a soloist.

Now, the WTTJ riff is what can be heard during the first verse and other parts of the song.
