This is a tiny venue too.  The floor is very small.  Get Gold VIP here if you can.  Wish I could hit this, but that date is bad for me.

GNR in a small venue twice in a 3 day span would be insane.  I'm just lucky to even be able to catch one show.  I missed the last tour in Chicago, but this more than makes up for it.

try "singer" or "electronic" - those are two TM/LN codes that usually work for all presales.

I don't believe Fillmore has a backstage area.  When I saw Dylan there a few years ago his bus parked right beside the venue and they walk from the bus into what I would guess is a very tiny backstage area.  I think that is why the picture sessions aren't offered for this theater tour like the end of the last leg when VIP's were available.

The "backstage area" is actually under the stage at The Fillmore. I actually met Velvet Revolver there a few years back. We had to go up like 2 flights of steps from the area where the band was to a door that led out to the right of the stage on the main floor.

There isn't but I would hope it has something like that for us that purchased it. After show party access or something cool. Each of the 4 shows I saw last year I always saw VIP passes/after show passes being handed out and worn by people so there is usually something like that going on. I'd love to see what it's like.

Just an FYI; They are being VERY generous with those pictures, the place is extremely run down  :hihi: but it's still an amazing venue to see GN'R in nonetheless. Every single time the subject of a GN'R Theater Tour has come up for the last 10 years or so, I've mentioned I would kill to see them play this place, so I'm happy as hell.

Another thing I'm glad about is the fact that there are a TON of better places to have a pre-party downtown Detroit than there are out by The Palace.

Guns N' Roses Add Date To Intimate Venue Tour

(Banana 101.5) Guns N' Roses will be embarking on a brief tour where they will play smaller venues ? as oppose to the giant arenas they played on their recent North American tour ? and have just added a Detroit date to the limited run.
It's been a long, long time since Guns N' Roses have played anything but gigantic arenas while touring but the band will scale things back considerably for an upcoming string of U.S. dates.

The "intimate venue" tour's six previously announced shows all SOLD OUT relatively quick, causing the band to add the latest date at The Fillmore in Detroit.

I've seen a ton of shows at The Fillmore (used to be just The State Theater) and I've never, ever seen assigned seating. It's all General Admission, the only difference being whether you're on the main floor or one of the two balconies.

Yeah, I've been pretty much everywhere in The Fillmore for a show and I really don't have a preference. If you have a main floor GA ticket, they'll let you up in the second balcony but not the first one. So if at any point you decide you'd rather be up top, you can always head up there.

I'm starting to think about what would be the best place to do the pre-party for Detroit. The easiest choice would be The State Bar because it's actually attached to The Fillmore:

http://www.downtowndetroitbars.com/state-bar.html

The problem I have with it is that it's TINY and it's going to be packed already with people just going to the show. I personally would rather have a place nearby that all of the forum folks could meet up. I'm thinking of the Hockeytown Cafe. It's close so it'll have regular concert goers too, but it's far, far bigger than The State Bar.

Cheli's Chili is a great place too. a couple blocks away by Comerica park. Good food and 3 levels.

Both of those are GREAT suggestions. I'm down for whatever everyone else is. I live about 25 minutes from downtown right off of 96 and I considered opening our house for a pre-party but I'm not sure how A) my room mate would feel about that yet and B) not sure how we'd all get down to the show if we all drink early at my place.

Advantage to my place is cheaper drinks and I have every GN'R album from Suicide to Democracy on wax

The State Bar is so small anyway and they usually don't have good drink specials.  Ok to go to sometimes before a Tiger game, but there are usually better places.

This ticket is for the sold out GENERAL ADMISSION FLOOR (WHERE ALL THE ACTION IS!). I'm  letting this go at cost (which is cheaper than the balcony tickets) because we are all friends here in on this board.

I know this is a long shot since I assume everyone local already has tickets but if anyone wants to buy my GA floor ticket for $75 (paypal) let me know by 1:30PM.  I did print at home so I have the pdf I can email you immediately after payment.  I woke up today to find that one of our ferrets had died overnight so I'm really not in much of a mood to drive 6 hours for a concert but if it doesn't sell I'll go anyway.  Maybe it will be cathartic.

Yeah, doors are at 9. If you have the Gold VIP you have to pick up your ticket at will call after 7. Unfortunately, the lineaments won't be available. The guy I talked to said they are sending it via mail and it should arrive by March(Bummer!). On another note, I'm pretty sure this is Guns first ever show in downtown Detroit so I'm pretty fired up!!

GN'R had played the same venue in 1987 (they were opening up for the Cult)

Right on, didn't know that.

My sympathies, mate. Losing a much loved pet is heartbreaking. I see from your later post that you've decided to go to the show; I hope the positive energy there will bring you comfort.

I hope Axl feels better, the show goes on, and everyone has a great and safe time.

Cancellations suck; unfortunately I have been through Vancouver 2002 and Albany 2011.  Sickness though is always a legit excuse though obviously!  I just feel for whoever is traveling from previous experience.
Don't want to get too far ahead, but I am traveling from NYC to AC on Friday for the show.  First and foremost I hope Axl feels much better by then. But if he has to cancel, I hope he does it by noon on Friday as I'll be leaving from NYC for AC by then.  Hitching a ride too so I really hope it all works out.

Have a great show tonight, kids!

Shame Axl had to get sick on this tour, but it's not like you get to pick when it happens.  I hope Detroit is as good for you as Chicago was for us.

P.S.

Guns N' Roses locked and loaded at Fillmore show

It was around 2 a.m. Wednesday when Guns N' Roses really started heating up.

The group was two and a half hours into a fiery performance at the Fillmore Detroit when it rolled headlong into "Nightrain," a classic cut from 1987's "Appetite for Destruction." A female fan crowd-surfed toward Axl Rose, and the enigmatic frontman extended his arm, smiled, and directed his next line toward her: "And I can tell you honey, you can make my money tonight."

It was a small moment in a king-size three-hour concert, but it was an example of the intimate connection between performer and fan that comes from a theater show. And it was those kinds of bits that seemed to stoke the band's fire, as it played with a vigor that was missing during Guns' December performance at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

At that half-empty Palace concert, GNR was powerful but aimless, going through the motions of being a gigantic rock band, a post it has long since abandoned. But Tuesday night/ Wednesday morning at the Fillmore, GNR felt much more like a working band, rather than an army of hired guns making rock poses in between loud blasts of pyro. It was almost as if the band had been humbled, and as a result was playing with a renewed purpose.

The band members riffed between songs, entertaining themselves with bits of the Isley Brothers' "It's Your Thing," Jackson 5's "ABC," MC5's "Kick Out the Jams" and Kiss' "Detroit Rock City." And they seemed to go a bit outside the playbook, offering up a bluesy, stripped-down version of "You're Crazy" early on and later easing into "Used to Love Her," which was absent from the December concert.

Then there were the epics: A mighty "Estranged" and a ferocious "Civil War" were full of arena muscle, and "This I Love," from "Chinese Democracy," felt as strong as anything from the band's golden era.

The show was still bloated in parts, full of extraneous solos from the band's guitarists that could have easily been excised. It was unclear why "November Rain" was cut short to allow for guitarist Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal to play the "Pink Panther" theme, but it was an awful decision. Likewise with bassist Tommy Stinson's mid-show offering of "Motivation," though it was likely just an excuse to let Axl run off stage and catch his breath for a bit.

Rose tweeted early in the day he was "sick as a dogg!!," and his voice ? particularly the high-end ? seemed especially shaky during the show. There were times when he went to sing and nothing at all came out, and still other times ? such as "Nightrain" ? when he was in solid form.

Vocals aside, it was fascinating to simply be that close to Rose, who has existed in a sort of self-imposed isolation for decades. He's long been as inaccessible as rock stars get, but this small venue tour feels like a new leaf. The singer turned 50 earlier this month, and if he's not the lean, serpentine figure he once was, he still makes quite an impression.

GNR wrapped the show with "Paradise City," as bursts of red confetti rained down on the crowd. It was 2:35 a.m. and GNR's nightrain had pulled in for the evening, but it's a ride passengers aren't likely to forget anytime soon.

OH WOW, holy fuck, shit goddamn, what the shit................ALL of that and more.

Let me start by saying this; last night was my 11th time seeing Guns N' Roses and it was HANDS DOWN THE BEST show I've ever seen. Prior to this, the first Hammerstein show in 06 was #1 with GN'R/Skids in 91 being a close close second. Both of those shows bent over, took it in the ass from last nights show, smiled and said "Thank you, may I please have more".

When we got to The Fillmore, we went to say hit to ereeper who was there to be first in line. About 2 minutes after we got there, Ron came right up the front door to hang with all of us. He was super cool, hung out with the fans for a while, etc. We all got pics and we made his CrowdStream app too. He let me hold he guitar while we took a pic which was cool as hell. After he left, we went to get cocktails and met up with more friends.

In hindsight, I'm upset I didn't attempt to record the show but I'm glad I didn't attempt it in a way. Security were A S S H O L E S on the way in and there's no way I would've been able to bring in the recorder. Stacey got beyond hassled by security for bringing in a prescription because she had it in a different bottle than it came in (long story, but whatever). After all that BS, we walked in and got a table directly behind the sound board which was awesome.

Sponge (the opener, a has been/never was Detroit band) opened and was awful. They played 5 songs and of course closed with their "biggest hit" which they drug out for far, far too long. Everyone in the crowd openly making fun of how long they drug it out.

When the lights went down for Guns, something else played before (or instead of) Dexter. I don't know what it was, but it wasn't GN'R, it wasn't Dexter and I've never heard GN'R play it before a show. I honest to God can't remember if Dexter even played after that, I think CD started right up (again, I honestly can't remember so no one lose their mind at me if I'm wrong, lol). After Welcome to the Jungle, Axl pointed at the crowd and said "You guys are fucking bringing it. GOD DAMN". He kept mentioning how awesome the crowd was through the entire show.

As others have said, they did some awesome jams. The band kept trying to start Detroit Rock City, they did the Jackson 5 "I Want You Back" jam, they jammed on "Kick Out The Jams" by MC5, etc. Axl was having such a good time that I think he completely fucked up the end of NR. I really think he had no idea they didn't play it. He was SO into killing it on the piano and when it got to the end before last solo, he got up, came around the piano, introduced Ron and left! The rest of the band looked shocked but went with the flow. Ron worked in some of the end solo in the intro to Panther which was cool of him. He did a little more right before Don't Cry too.

This show absolutely destroyed Chicago but a long, long, long shot. The crowd, the band, Axl, the sound.... everything was perfect. What a class act Axl was/is for not only going to work sick, but out doing every show I've ever seen him perform prior. Goes to show what a great crowd can do for a performer if you ask me. Axl was joking through the entire show and told a bunch of great stories. One was about his "eBay tweet" he said some girl yelled at him later in the day for an autograph and goes "I CAN'T SELL MY FUCKIN' LEG ON EBAY!!" and he laughed real hard. He was also talking about how the porn industry is talking about boycotting California soon and he said they should move it to Detroit. That was we can have the "motivation industry AND the automotive industry" haha.

After the band bow, Axl gave a little longer speech than usual explaining that he was in fact beyond sick but that he really wanted to come give us a great show and he hoped he did that. The place erupted when he said that with many, many people doing the "We're not worthy bow". The funniest thing was at the very very end Axl said "Goodnight, take care, we love you and DON'T TAKE NO SHIT FROM THE PO PO!" and laughed his ass off. It was so fucking funny. No one knows why he said it but if it was just to make himself and us laugh, it worked! Haha.

Astounding. Top notch. (Literally) Once in a lifetime. Stellar. Amazing..... none of those words or phrases come close to describing the night.

I posted this "review" on the official site too!

Pretty sure that Luck theme was the Intro last night after listening to that youtube link.  The guy sounds a lot like Leonard Cohen.  Just one more thing to make Detroit special!

Here's my random thoughts in case anyone cares.

1.  SOMEDAY I will learn that it's not worth it (at least at my age) to be right up front at these shows but being that close to the band was pretty awesome.  The sound just isn't as good as I'm sure it was 20 feet back or more.  It actually was pretty decent for as close as I was but I imagine it probably sounded amazing at other places in the venue.

2.  I was predisposed to not liking DJ based on his continual douchey pandering to the crowd for applause (and taking over for finck who I think is one of the most interesting guitarists alive) BUT I will admit that he played well and had energy and wasn't really a negative for me like I thought he would be (I just tended not to look at him).

3.  I really hope the girl who passed out right up front during patience is ok.  She was completely unresponsive when the medics carried her out.

4.  Jesus there are a lot of assholes out there.  Most of the people who were up front the whole time seemed pretty cool but it was a pretty constant barrage of people trying to squeeze up front with some lying sad sack of shit excuse for why they should be up there instead of the people who had been standing there for 4 hours straight.

4b.  FUCK YOU to the asshole who thought he needed to get up on stage and was SCREAMING next to me for a few songs.  It's one thing to sing along even if you can't sing, but outright just screaming at the top of your lungs....yeah, that's what I paid $100 to hear.

5.  Axl made a comment about people being worried about the show after his twitter post (re. him being sick) and said something like you just have to give it your all....this was after they had been playing for over 2.5 hours straight!  Honestly, I never would have even thought he was sick if I hadn't read his post.  He did a great job and yeah it was probably one of the happiest shows I have seen him.  Made several funny detroit references and commented about the crowd's energy.

6.  Overall a great show, amazing 3 hour set, band and axl sounded great (seemed like axl's voice was slightly giving out towards the end but damn who's wouldn't be after 3 hours).

Finally got approved to post, but looks like everyone already hit the highpoints.  Just to add on, show was Epic.

The abrupt end to November Rain was odd, but at least it wasn't due to some problem like in 2006 at the Palace show.  Back then there was a major screwup during Patience and Axl spiked the mic and stormed off ending the show early, so we missed at least Paradise City during that show.  Me and my buddy are pretty sure he flubbed the exact same line during Patience last night as well, but as everyone said, he was in such a great mood he didn't let it bother him.

One other interaction no one has mentioned, during one of the times people were crowd surfing, Axl was standing up on the monitors and the crowd was motioning to him to jump.  He laughed and said, paraphrasing, "no I did that once in St. Louis and it cost me a lot of money. I learned  my lesson, there was a trial and everything!  a big fat woman on the jury said I just looked like I had a bad attitude so I must be guilty and should know better.  so since then, I've learned my lesson."   it was pretty funny.

the review posted from the Detroit news above is pretty spot on.  THere were a few songs where his voice was just gone and you felt like maybe the illness had finally caughten up with him but then the next song he would hit it out of the park.  he's definitley a warrior.

Axl has flubbed a line or 2 at the last 2 shows I saw and you can always see him smile it off to himself.  He probably felt like total hell last night and went up there and gave it his all for the fans, well, God bless the man.  I am just continually impressed over and over again lately by this band, their stamina, and how far things have come. :peace:

I was in the 2nd row in the upper level and i had a good view of that woman and she was dead weight flopping around. hope she turned out ok! Im surprised some of the crowd surfers didnt get hurt, a couple of the girls were dropped twice! There was no doubt he was sick though, a couple times running back to the room at the back of the stage he was covering his mouth coughing. He also had tissues by chris and seen him blow his nose a couple times, with all this they still kicked ass!

I hope that girl is OK as well. I was body passed up the bleachers at a UW football game In Madison, WI many years ago in the infamous section P. It was strangely exciting, but I was very sore the next day!

This show sounds great! i am glad that everybody had such a great time!

Dexter was not the Intro last night.  The guy beside me said the song was from an HBO show called Luck with Dustin Hoffman.

In AC they should use the "Boardwalk Empire" theme to open!

This was my fifth time seeing guns since 2000.  Twice in Chicago, once in Detroit and Cleveland prior to last night.  Each of those shows had great moments and memories but what I saw at the Fillmore was phenomenal from start to finish.

Early in the day I saw the 'sick as a dogg' tweet, so to say I was on edge is a bit of an understatement.  If this is how Axl performs sick, he should be sick more often.  The energy, enthusiasm and connection with the audience was more so than in the four previous performances I had seen combined.

When we arrived we parked across the street at Comerica Park and immediately saw a massive line still being ushered in.  We quickly made the decision to go down some 'cheap' beer at the State Bar next door considering we knew Guns wouldn't be hitting the stage until 11ish at best.  We got into the Fillmore right before Sponge took the stage.  I think they performed four songs, all of which I recognized (90's nostalgia).  The frontman had good stage presence and was up to the task of warming up the crowd.

Guns hit the stage at about 11:30 and raged through the first hour of material with Axl hitting on all cylinders.  His voice was amazing, and was mistakenly something I had worried about reading reviews of the HOB show.  The next hour was a mix of solo intro's, Axl banter, crowd surfing and more bombastic delivery of new and old staples.  I got to hear Civil War, Estranged, Used to Love Her and You're Crazy for the first time...really couldn't have asked for more out of a set list.

Some of the solos did drag a bit with Fortus being featured more than I remember from past shows.  I don't mind the solos but they should be cut in half at the least.  By the final hour it seemed as though either Axl's voice was tiring or the sound mix was a bit off as low register bits were very hard to hear.  This really didn't take away from the overall energy though as the boys finished strong.

It was a tough day at work with a little under 4 hours of sleep last night but it was well worth it!  I can't reiterate enough how impressive that show was.  I've seen many, many concerts and the top spot was is no longer in question.  'Nu' Guns N' F'N Roses!

Wow!! I am back home in Portland and still recovering. I won't add on to the reviews too much as everyone hit the nail on the head already. This is by far the best GNR show I have attended hands down. Every member was spot on and tight!! It was also super cool to meet a few forum members too. Thanks for incredible night!!!

I just posted this to Live Nations site for my review:

Astounding. That's about the best word to describe this show. I've seen over 500 concerts in my time, having seen Guns N' Roses several times through the years dating all the way back to 1991. This was bar none, hands down, the BEST live performance I've ever seen by a rock group. Earlier in the day Axl Rose tweeted that he was "sick as a dog" so many of us were worried the show would be called off. Not only was the show not called off, but Axl was in rare form. You could see him blowing his nose in between songs as well as coughing into his sleeve but none of that stopped him from feeding off the crowd and giving the performance of a lifetime. GN'R played for right about 3 hours including solos from each guitarist (Ron Thal, Richard Fortus, DJ Ashba) and one keyboard player (Dizzy Reed). The crowd was completely into the show the entire night, never once getting board. Axl took time to mention that the crowd was amazing more than a few times. If you're on the fence about seeing Guns N' Roses because of anything from the past (attitudes, former members, even riots) please take a chance and see them live. They're usually "good to great" in my opinion, but from what I witnessed on Tuesday, they are in rare, rare form these days and should not be missed by anyone who loves music or live performance.

Must be it then http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67X-m8W9pXs

The opening theme to Luck is "Splitting the Atom" feat. Horace Andy by Massive Attack.
