I hope the show is awesome.

MUCH rather spend the next few weeks talking about a possible new song or Axl killing it out there instead of rehashing the same topics that frustrate us.

I don't think Axl has been seen for many months, how has he managed to remain so 'hidden' for so long. Not even photos arriving in Rio, I doubt there will be any change to his presentation but as it's morning here I'll be watching for updates & videos & photos & plenty of music & Axl's sway  :love:

I love every version of GN'R, (and yes im not at the show tonight- blah bah blah) but surely enough is enough with the same old tired setlist and no aspirations of playing new music. The band members must be getting sick of playing the same set over and over and over and over and over for years apon years.

2-3 new songs were promised and the crazy Rio fans got NOTHING.
I am loosing a lot of respect for whatever Axl is trying to do with this band.

If he brings that tour back down to Australia with no new material, I wont be going.
And before anyone says im not "real" fan hinge whinge whinge -I have a  NEW GN'R tattoo.

But I am sure the fans had a wonderful time tonight at the show, and that's what matters right?

Soooo , did he even say anything of interest ? Or just sing the same songs in the same order wearing the same clothes etc etc !!! Nice for Rio to see a legend I'm sure they had fun but c'mon ,,,, it's just a nostalgia act now isn't it ??
Real shame , I've defended them to the hilt over the years but what's the point in this ? Money ? Anyway good luck to them , if they ever release any new music I will be the first in line .

I don't think anyone would doubt that u are a huge GnR fan since U have a freakin GnR Tatoo! not to mention only a very small percentage of  GnR fans know about or read this fan forum- but I'm willing to bet  more than %90 or so of people who have seen GnR since 2006 with basically the identical lineup sans DJ since 2009 & mostly the same set list & pool of songs have not seen them multiple times-  I'm sure most of those people are thrilled to have the opportunity to see GnR in any form live & are blown away by how awesome they are live. I am part of the very hardcore fans that has seen them live 15x since 2006, IMO every show has been unique & pretty unpredictable- I always hope for Axl to be on fire & for the band to perform one of their 3-4 hour marathon shows. Truth be told, other than knowing almost for certain they will open with CD,Jungle, ISE,& Brownstone & R gonna end with Nightrain & PC as finale, I don't know until I see the show if Axl is gonna be great or" Fucking balls to the wall blazing" nor do I know if will B a short 2hr.  show for them or pull out all the stops & play 4 hrs. or if they will throw in songs like TWAT,Catcher IRS ,OTGM, civil War, Better, Shackler's, Sorry, ITW, MY M, U To L Her, Don't Cry etc. or numerous different covers that have not been automatic staples at shows. Then there R little nuances like whether Axl is gonna throw in "With Your ASS in the AIR!" During YCBM (almost a certain indicator he is on fire), so IMO there is plenty of variation for a hardcore fan as myself that does see multiple shows each tour. Whereas, most bands play note for note the exact same order of 90min- 2hr shows with every tour only rotating in a few new ones if they are touring to support an album. So i don't know why anyone would be surprised or disappointed if they are a fan.

 U are, of course entitled to feel however you want- I just thought I'd throw my 2 cents in  : ok:

Show was schedueled to start at 10PM. The boys hit the stage around 11:50PM...the crowd was already loosing its pacience as usual...a lot of booing in between background songs. However, when the band hit the stage everyone had a blast...crowd was very loud, Axl highlighted that at some point of the show!  : ok:
Even though promoters claimed all tickets were sold, the place was not packed. There was a lot of empty seats at the stands and I watched the show pretty close to the stage and rather comfortable i'd say. I estimate around 80% of the venue capacity was fulfilled...not lame but not packed. IMO this has a lot to do with the fact the the show was not on a weekend, people have to work the next day and Rio de Janeiro is a huge mess nowadays with a lot of construction and road blocks goin`on in preparation for the World Cup and the Olympic Games...people are taking many hours to move from one place to another. All of this contrubutes for low attendance IMO.

As for the concert, I wasnt really expecting any major surprises, it was ok for me! Glad they did Catcher, Estranged and Dont Cry...however i missed Civil War.
Rocket Queen was not played either! ???
Axl did not take off his jacket, glasses and hat at any moment despite the hot temperature in the venue...the guy must have lost some pounds!  :o

Happy to hear the show went well and the crowd was happy.

But this actually is a bit shocking to me. It's the same presentation, same bunch of songs, in the same order, with the same solo spots/intros, as they've been touring now for 5 years. And this in the same country! They hit Brazil in 2010 and in 2011.

Maybe I'm just getting old. Had I gone to a show now in 2014 and had been served the same "presentation" as I saw (twice) in 2010, eh, I'd be bummed. And amazed. That goes for any artist or group.

Pretty much.

Its incredibly disappointing, but truthfully, not the least bit surprising.  Its very discouraging how uninterested this "band" seems to be in moving forward.

I was really hoping theyd kick things off with a bang and with some new stuff...
not surprised...but I had been hoping

but at least the show went off with no major issues it sounds, and im sure the people at the show had a good time

i look forward to hearing or seeing some decent youtube clips, I wish Axl would lose the hat and those glasses but thats just my little thing

Just arrived from the show, here are my 2 cents:

- place was 90% full;
- no surprises, but we had fun;
- Axl was sounding ok, but no raspy voice;
- at the beggining, the big screens were a bit slow, but after 3 songs they fixed it;
- it was impossible to hear DJ's guitar, too low;
- finally got to hear catcher live;
- missed civil war and roquet queen;
- concert started 1h50min late;
- Fortus was on fire, owned KOHD;
- concert was shorter than 2010 and 2011;

I m not sure why anybody would expect him "to sound better"

his voice has changed over the years...hes in his 50''s now... I dont know why it would go back n fourth

but im no vocal coach ha

like you said we want to see signs of the ship sailing forward...unfortunately last night didn't bring any signs.... but im not damning them after one show... but if this is the same show by the end of this Brazil run... then you really have to shake ur head a little bit

and personally I dont judge them or Axl sound on any cover, apetite or illusion song....i just find them fun to hear cuz i love most of those songs, and its like a strill thru memory lane

i only judge them on the CD songs... thats all this band did, so 3 or 4 songs of that........ well i wish theyd play more of CD

but they dont ask me  ;D

Agree with your first part.

The second part?  No shot.  Even if last night's playlist is played at every stop, we will be told to shut our traps and all is well.

I always found that argument a bit disingenuous.

I've never really heard it put forth that since the setlist never changes, man, I sure bet those people in attendance had a terrible time.  Has anyone ever actually said that?

Don't get me wrong, you hear that thrown back at you all the time as if that IS what you are saying.  But has anyone ever done it?

Maybe not at the show, but certainly elsewhere.  I'll actually admit, when I'm at a GNR show, I'm thinking "Fuck, this is awesome," and I'm also thinking, "Here comes It's So Easy, then Brownstone, then maybe Live & Let Die."

I am VERY happy with last nights show (I wasn't there).  From what I have seen on youtube....band was firing on all cilinders.
As the tour continues, shows tend to get longer and setlists tend to morph.  This was a good strong start to what will be an awesome SA tour, which will serve as a really good warm up for Vegas.
Rocket Queen needs to find it way back in though....

I wish they were streaming a show.  I enjoyed the last couple they did....

Could well be.

Apparently, fans of the band Guns N' Roses should be all funny in the pants over a new Tommy Stinson cover, a different Ron Thal solo song, and a new DJ Ashba guitar solo.

Pfffft...and people doubted.

Suddenly hundreds of people asked to take photos with him...he had his 15 minutes of fame and took home an unique GNR memorabilia!!!

.       I was at their 1st show after CD was released in Monterrey 2009 after long lay off- they were 3 hrs late & played like 16 songs- before long they were a well oiled machine coming out on time & punching out 3 hr+ shows regularly- so No cause 4 concern  :peace:

Do you really think the only people that go to an artist's concerts are the same people who post online on message boards?

There's an entire spectrum of fans with varying levels of how closely they monitor and follow a band's activities on a day to day basis.

Much like you can't think that the people that call a sportsradio station represents the fanbase as whole.

Even though I know I'd attend a show with this same setlist 100 times if I had the money, I have to admit i'm dissapointed.

I honestly dont see the reason not to change a couple of songs. The GNR catalogue is HUGE, you can replace 3 or 4 songs here and there and still satisfy ''casual'' (the ones that fullfill the venues) and ''hardcore fans'' (like us).

And also, I just dont see how the band can feel motivation to play this almost exact setlist for years.

This is the point of view of someone that already attended 10 GNR shows and have tickets for another 6. I'm clearly not an internet whiner behind a monitor.

Well, honestly, they don't exactly seem "happy" in Guns N' Roses.  Fuck, Ron wears it on his sleeve how miserable he is in GNR.  Richard talks about how he can't wait to be done with this tour so he can go back to the Daisies.  DJ just finished the next Sixx AM album, which is obviously his real passion project.  Who isn't spinning their wheels in GNR these days?

Sometimes I really wonder who the hell are going to these shows?

Because how many people really post here and across the street.... maybe 4 to 500 ?

ho do they sell all these tickets...and what do those people think

they just are happy to hear Axl sing SCOM and November Rain? I guess so
Do you really think the only people that go to an artist's concerts are the same people who post online on message boards?

There's an entire spectrum of fans with varying levels of how closely they monitor and follow a band's activities on a day to day basis.

Ali

There were even people who didnt know Slash is not in the band...believe me!  :yes:

I refuse to believe this goes on in 2014.

Do they also wonder where the new Nirvana album is?  What's talking that Kurt Cobain so long anyway?

You gotta take into account that Guns left the maistream in 1994 and never came back. Back then, every single they released was an instant hit. Many people dont have idea of what happened between 1994 - 2014, their most succesfull release in this period was the Live Era CD...Chinese was a total failure, no media support at all. So it is no surprise that some people go to the concert based on the name GNR and based on the period they were on top... its more common than you think!

It's easy to complain about the setlist, but when you see the crowd's reaction and the way they sing along....

All solos were new.

Well, bully for that.

What, exactly, does it do for a fan of the band Guns N' Roses to hear a different cover song sung by Tommy, a different Ron Thal solo song sung by him, and a different guitar solo written by DJ Ashba?

No one is disputing those things happened last night.  We are all clear on that part.  What is being discussed is how little that does for a Guns N' Roses fan hoping that there might be future output to look forward to from the band Guns N' Roses.

I guess its also easy to offer non sequitur answers to arguments no one ever presented.

Concerns about the setlist are big picture.  Does this band have any real desire to move forward?  Is this just more of the same and time to give up the ghost they will ever do anything new?

No one, ever, as in not one time...has had one of these conversations and wrapped it up with how sorry they felt for the people in the seats who must have just had a terrible time.

Never, ever, ever been said.  By anyone.  Ever.  Anywhere.

Correct.

Im sure the crowd was electric...it always is

It is very telling that the guys all changed up their solo spot....

if only they could get the big guy to change up the GNR songs a little bit

I understand the questions about moving forward or not.  But, ultimately, in the age of Twitter and smart phones and live updates from the gigs, one should not lose sight of the fact that the shows are really for those in attendance, not those of us following along on the messageboards.

And I accept that.  What I don't accept though, are phony arguments and bogus answers that have nothing to do with the question.

Man, kind of a bummer they didn't play anything new last night.  Hope that changes in future shows.

Well, the crowd seemed to have a good time.  So fuck you and your god damn griping.

That's an answer that has literally zero to do with the original statement.

Oh, you mean people attending a GNR concert were singing along to 'Sweet Child O' Mine'??  Wow, you don't say.  But what does that have to do with anything being discussed?  That's an answer to "I bet everyone it that building hated their experience", which no one is saying.

I'm just offering a perspective that what may not be very fun or interesting following along at home, may be much more fun if you are actually there.

I do hope to hear new material at some point.  When that is something that none of us have any control over, unfortunately.

I think the crowd's reaction will be equally good (or even better) if the band mixes a little bit their setlists. The GNR song catalogue is so damn big and rich to be stuck in one rigid setlist...

Changing the setlist, at least in 3 or 4 songs here and there, will satisfy everybody: the casual fans and us, the big ones.

Anyway, I'm anxious and happy to have 6 GNR shows in the short term  :beer:

Crowd reaction will always be favorable.

Who buys a ticket to see a band and goes and sits on their hands, all miserable like?  When does that happen?  You presumably bought a ticket because you like the band and wanted to see them.

I bought a ticket to see GNR the last time they came around my way.  I went to the concert and had a great time.  And yes, for those 2 and a half hours, I did not concern myself with the lack of a new album.  Or Axl's poor communication with the fans. Or any of that other stuff we discuss around here.

When you are there, you are there to see a show and have fun.

I'm clearly not an internet whiner behind a monitor.
.    Well said- I'm basically in the same boat- I love being able to see any GnR Show but of course I want to see the one where Axl is top of his game & they play 3-4 hrs. But I accept that's just not possible every show- Axl is over 50 & always gives %100 to his performance while trying to pace himself a bit- He has done a great job of keeping the band alive in a way that works for him-period. Most other big bands charge a fortune especially if u want a decent seat & play 15 -17 at most - go on at 9 end at 11- every fuckin time. No thx! I'll take GnR any day over that!

It is what it is guys. I never expect a new song, and when they do play a new song, I get excited just hearing about it. The majority of the crowd wants to hear the oldies, just the 'die hards', like us, want the new stuff. I just appreciate that their back on tour! That band and this site has brought me years of joy and entertainment. I've been lucky enough to go to a few shows almost every single tour gnr has ever had, and just to hear axl's beautiful voice live, makes me so happy. I LOVE the whole experience, whether I'm there or in front of my computer... What time will they start, set list, etc.

So it's really how you look at it.  : ok:

Thanks so much for posting all those great pics, instagrams, and youtubes! Sounds like it was a great show!

Yeah, at this point I gave up on GNR new music. If I go to a show and AXL performs the hits, it's all I needed / paid for. It's all I plan to see in Vegas in a few weeks. Anything on top of that is a bonus. For new music there's always other bands, Slash new album coming out this year, he probably will tour after, and there you have it: new music, Paradise City and Nightrain in the same show.

It's an honest to god miracle they stick with him.

"Axl, buddy...what are we doing here?" has to be a question they ask, right?

In another post you said you go to the shows and for that 2.5 to 3 hours you don't "worry" about new songs, (lack of) communication etc. If that's true than it wouldn't be hard to realize that the band is having fun with what they're doing, right? But they don't make any music.  That's the whole point here.  They are in a band that does not do anything creatively.

Yes, I think the comparison to my earlier point about how its not a concern whilst on stage is a good one.  But in a bigger picture sense, where is any of this going?  Is it just a paycheck every 12-18 months?  Look how the others talk about how much fun they have with their side projects.  Presumably, its because they write and record music.  It's kind of the job.

Except in this band.

I think your presumption is wrong.
It's so much easier for them to talk about what's going on with their side projects because every word isn't scrutinized/dissected like it is when they're talking about anything GNR.

I don't think that's fair Gypsy.
The band members either speak about GNR in terms that are so vague, they invite dissection and scrutiny.
In other cases, things the band members say and repeat, year after year, rarely come to fruition.
It's just a rock band, not the CIA.

Still doesn't mean they enjoy their side projects better than being in GNR.  Apples and Oranges.
Lucky for them and us that they can do both!!!

It's like when any one of them says something along the lines of "I have a blast doing the solo gigs but GNR pays the bills."  All the negative ninnies go ape shit about "so-n-so said he's only in GNR for the money!!!  :crying: "

Seriously?  Does anyone truly believe that any of the guys are in GNR "only for the money"??  ::)

As for the guys saying and repeating things that rarely come to fruition:  First off, those repeated answers are to questions that have been asked a gazzillion times ... over and over and over.  How many ways can they say "we don't have an answer right now. We are working on it but at the moment it's out of our control"? (Example:  the hold-up to the 3D release).  Can you really blame someone being asked a question for the umpteenth time to give a silly or nonsensical answer to something that doesn't have an answer?

I'm NOT saying that the fans shouldn't ask 'those' questions or want a new album or hear new songs at the shows, etc.  We want those things because we are fans.  I think the band understands how frustrating it is for us.  Would be nice if some of us could try to understand how frustrating the business aspect of the job can be for them.

And a preemptive strike on those who are going to argue "well other bands do it".
Way more bands DON'T do it and the ones that do are more than likely in an entirely different position dealing with contractual issue than GNR.

So I think my reply to D-GenerationX was fair.  ;)

No, I thought it was fair.

End of the day, its just my opinion.  Might be right, might be wrong.  Who knows, really?

I just think you have to really ask yourself this.  If you told Ron in 2006 and then DJ in 2009 that come 2014 they would be no closer to releasing music like a band...would they have believed you?  One enters a band under the premise the group of them will create music.  This band does not do that.

Is this what they signed up for, do you think?

As with everything we're talking about, we don't know (nor IMO should we be privy too) the specifics of any of these business contracts/negotiations.

That being said, by 2006 CD was what like 14, 15, 16 years in the making?  If you willingly signed a contract at that particular point in time, I imagine your eyes would have been pretty wide open.  Coming on board in 2009 is different obviously because CD was released but being witness to the way things were handled (business-wise) with the release, again, your eyes should have been open.

GNR history should tell everyone involved that each individual member doesn't need to be in the same room at the same time to create music.  And all the guys have stated their goal is to create and release new GNR music.  Something is preventing that from happening.  What that something is .... ??

And what the guys actually did "sign up for" is IMO info between them and the suits.

I think we can agree that everyone in GNR is just as frustrated with the situation as the fans.  And just like the fans, each individual expresses that frustration differently.
