Title: Axl announces NEW GnR tour for 2023
Post by: Carlos Gunner on February 20, 2023, 07:40:03 PM
Axl announced a new tour for  Guns N' Roses through a tweet.

What do you think?

I am personally not too excited about it, since there is no new music, and Izzy Stradlin is still not part of the reunion band.    :crying:

Er, he said see everyone on tour.  Not the same.

But let's read between the lines and say he's coming to St Louis.  :D
I took it personally.  :hihi:

Yeah, not too excited either...  :-\ last time his voice was destroyed.
At the very least it would be nice to have a couple of tracks out before the tour begins.

no point to have Izzy back in the band without plans for an album, Richard is way more reliable than him live, and a way better technical guitarist who can play CD stuff.

Would like for Izzy to come along.  But I would have Richard tagging a long too and a contract that says, we're suing the fuck out of you if you don't follow through.  Izzy would get them on the road to an album right quick.

From what I have heard Richard Fortus is a better technical musician than Izzy Stradlin, but Bumblefoot and Buckethead and Tommy Stinson were even better musicians than Slash and Duff as well, yet they did not generate all the enthusiasm Slash and Duff have caused. Izzy Stradlin is part of the Soul of GNR, he is a forgotten legend.

Izzy hasn't been a part of this band in 30 years. He was never made for the spotlight that GNR projected to be was he a great song writer yes im sure a very good guitarist but ill ride with Fortus everyday of the week he has earned that status. and not for nothing the only time i hear izzy refer to gnr in the last 30 years happens to be when he feels he is not getting his share of the action sorry be gone.

Hope those going have a great time.
Personally, this is the first time they’re coming to Norway and I’m not even considering going.
If they bring along Izzy or better yet Izzy and Adler, I’m in!

They can bring them, it is not that difficult to bring them in.
Probably ego problems are harder to surmount.
I personally think it was selfish to bring PopCorn Adler for a couple of shows and barely for 2 to 3 songs. Very selfish in my opinion.

As far as I can remember, or the version of the narrative I remember, was that it was too hard for Izzy to be around the band when he stopped using hard drugs.
And many of my musician-friends often say that much of the songwriting talent in GNR went away with Izzy.
Not to mention the "feel/swagger".
Adler is also often mentioned as having that hard to define "feel/swagger" that a much better technical session-player can't replicate.
Just search YouTube for when Adler joined the band in 2016(?) and played My Michelle.

yeah, I mean, the other guys were always prompt to say that Izzy didn't like to tour, but he toured with GNR all these years right...and then he toured again without any problem with the Ju Ju Hounds

like he said in this interview :

https://youtu.be/WftdpWNXFk4

"I've always loved touring, I got a bad rap from the Gunners about, you know, not wanting to tour and do videos and all that, I've always loved traveling and I've always loved playing different places"

He's not done a tour since 2000. That was three dates in Japan. Before that he toured with the Ju Ju Hounds, until 1993.

He was a guest with GN'R on some tours after that. But I don't think he was bound by a schedule. Which explains why he showed up for certain shows, and not the next one, only to appear again later.

As a musician, I say he's overrated. Just look at each member's work post-breakup and it's clear that most of what made up Guns' songwriting was Slash and Axl. Slash had the riffs, Axl had the vocal melodies, lyrics and piano ballads. Izzy's work since 1991 has all been snoozefest folksy "rock". He also had no writing credit on some of their biggest hits (Civil War and Welcome to the Jungle, for example). Would anyone say those songs are "missing what made GNR GNR"? Of course not. That's why it's so silly to me when people blow Izzy up into this mythical mastermind behind everything. Give me a break.

oh sure, it's not apparently his priority, I pointed the fact that he never had something against it, and he could do it when he wanted/needed.

I mean, Axl has nothing against making new music, but he didn't put out much.

Izzy didn't tour much, but he's done 10 studio albums.

different priorities, but not disabilities.

True. But just like some people claim Axl doesn't want to do something, the same could be said about Izzy.

I don't know if it's true or not.

But when he did tour with GN'R as a special guest he seemed to have a freedom to come and go as he wished. That wouldn't necessarily work if he was in the band full time.

well, I suppose you know quite a bit Axl, not so much Izzy, in any way you're at a better place than me to judge if he wants to make a new record or not. to me they both are capable to make music and tour, but at this point, not together, because of whatever personal reasons between the two.

I just know Izzy didn't refrain to say harsh things about Axl, and I know how Axl has a good memory  :hihi:

Well Izzy said it was just because of the money. So he was eventually ready for the tour. The "i don't want to go on tour thing" is 30 years ago, people changes.

Main problem with izzy is that he stucks to "old" music, don't think his creative inputs would even fit slash's music ideas nowadays.

Well Izzy said it was just because of the money.

Izzy said that, but Slash said "I haven't really talked to him since then. There were a lot of different issues that I'm not really going to get into. We wanted it to work out, but we couldn't seem to meet eye to eye on the whole thing. So it just never happened."

I'll give you an analogy. If you ask me to do something, and I don't do it the way you expect/want, you can say "he doesn't want to do it". Just because I prefer to do it in my way on my terms.

This is basically what people think of Axl. That he doesn't want to release music. Well, maybe he wants to do it on his terms.

The same could apply to Izzy. He hasn't toured in over 20 years because he couldn't do it in a way he wants. Who knows!

I am never one who likes to jump on the bash axl band wagon as thats too low a hanging fruit to do that. So when it comes to people clamoring for izzy or steven to come back this where it hurts having 1 album of original material from from 1991 to 2008 and then 2008 to now. Had GNR whether its was the Chi dem era lineup or this current line up come out with god forbig 1 let alone 2 albums at any point in during those years it may have given some of the die hards something to grab onto musically and say hey this line up ain't bad at all or the current one with fortus and ferrer and melissa in addition to the big 3. Not having more music to hang your hat on leaves us with people who just wanna see guys from the glory days of this band.

Some people will always want something that they don't have. They wanted Slash back in the band, well that's not enough, they want new music, well the song's too old, they want shows, well the setlist is wrong, the tickets are too expensive etc.

Human nature.

The ones wanting an AFD reunion, do you think they would love that even if it meant that line up toured successfully for years without putting out any new music?

Will always want new music from GNR whether they tour or not or who is in the band.  And I wasn't that into what they've put out lately.

I watch a lot of their shows through the streams.  I listen to their albums over and over again.  Kind of the same thing to me.

I would like to see a full blown reunion but I also liked the line up in what was called new GNR.  Middle of the road person, probably going to get hit by cars.  :hihi:

But there's a difference between wanting something so much that you go on and on about it, like a kid asking how many days until Christmas every day of the year. Or wanting something and then just enjoying it when it appears...

The whole new music thing. I remember 1999. We got Oh My God, and after that.... Now it's been less than two years since the band put out two singles. Maybe the ones who want the new music the most think this so called wait is bad.  :hihi:

I know for me death seems to be all around and getting closer everyday.  Time doesn't seem to be on anyone's side any more, even for the young.  GNR is the good stuff in life and you can't fault anyone for wanting more.

METALLICA, GUNS, OZZY, MAIDEN, AC/DC, TOOL: POWER TRIP IS AS FUCKIN' ROCK AS IT GETS

Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne, Guns N' Roses, AC/DC, Tool and Iron Maiden will converge on the Empire Polo Field in Indio for Goldenvoice's Power Trip, which is not only the most amazing rock festival lineup we've ever heard of but simply the most rock thing we've ever heard of. We're told that Guns and Maiden will perform on Friday, AC/DC and Ozzy on Saturday and Metallica and Tool on Sunday. And if after that you're still able to go to work on Monday, you gotta tell us what's in your coffee.

Several of the acts posted the same teaser trailer on their socials on 3/28. Inside sources say the fest will transpire in October.

Watch the teaser below and throw goat.

That confused the hell out of me.  I had just heard on the radio AC/DC had no plans to tour or record and Ozzy had said he was done.  Add the Stones and some of the Beatles and you've got the graveyard shift playing.   :hihi:

Yes, I did say that.  I'm of that age I can make a joke about it.  How did we get so old?

It’s a painful reality… :P

Yeah this is huge news for AC/DC and Ozzy. It was rumored that Angus was hit hard by Covid and over 2 years had passed since the album came out with no tour in sight. People had written them off completely.

Keith Richards just keeps raising that bar and playing guitar.  :hihi:  I'm getting Willie Nelson tickets if the weather is not too hot.  I think he's 90.  Having a hard time understanding old.  I can tell you, I've been lied to my old life.  It's nothing like I was told.   :hihi:  Having a really good time though.  :D

They predate GN'R, but they're legends in their own right and time. Only act cooler would be Patti Smith.

Will Brian Johnson be singing for AC/DC?

Why not? He sang on their new album in 2020 and was rehearsing for shows before covid hit. I doubt they'd even ask Axl on for a song, they're not the type of band that does special guests and a decent chunk of their fans really hate Axl and still have a bad taste in their mouth because it was looking like the last AC/DC shows ever would not have had Brian on vocals, but instead Axl. That said, many other fans like myself thought Axl was incredible and showed the utmost respect in his stint with them.

By all accounts, AC/DC's classic lineup will be performing: Brian Johnson, Angus Young, Cliff Williams, and Phil Rudd, with Stevie Young continuing in place of his late uncle Malcolm.

How are ticket sales going?  Still sluggish?  Personally, I think social media has sold all the tickets it's going to.  I think they probably need to push Axl into traffic.  He's the attention getter.  Get him in front of the ticket sales that don't follow the band on social media.  Drag him around the block a few times.  He'd probably hate that.

Hopefully Elton turns up a day early and helps GNR with November Rain!

I live 20 miles from the festival, this is the first time I haven't been able to get tickets - absolutely gutted! Watching GNR at Glastonbury is a dream of mine.

If anyone knows of anyone selling faceless tickets, do PM me  ;)

I got a Glasto ticket in the resale - absolutely buzzing!  Due to my work and family commitments it is very unlikely I will now be able to attend Hyde Park.  If any gunners here are interested in x2 General tickets for a fair price please message me.  I have been a member of this board for many, many years so this is genuine.

There were much more activity here then, than now. Today, even a new song gets like 10-20 comments, by basically the original band, but 10-15 years ago, just a rumor that a violinist was to record with a former sound engineer that used to be neighbor with the mom of Tommy Stinson would be a 60 page thread 😂

I just don't have that much to say any more after being on GNR sites for almost 25 years.  You'd think I would have learned something.  :hihi:  Threads just turn into pages of complaints.  Say anything positive and there are posters out there ready to jump you.  The GNR narrative sucks.

It's funny to me that people who supposedly love Izzy so much don't know that he doesn't like touring.

I know the general narrative but did he ever express that himself in interviews?

He didn't even support his own albums with tours...

Axl sabotaged his own shows with GNR, he being the main man in GNR also was very inconsistent with it
only God knows what Izzy wants, but according to interviews he was ready for a GNR reunion the last one that happened.

For now, any setlist wishes? They have included more and more songs over the years, this time around I'm hoping they'll bring back Breakdown and Pretty Tied Up.

Maybe reducing to 2 hour shows? Could maybe open up for more variety between the sets?

Why do people ask for different set lists? How many people go to more than one show in a tour? I presume only a few dedicated fans, which don't mind the same set list anyways. When I am at the show I want to hear as many songs as possible. Unlike others around me, I sing to all of the songs (CD and covers) which 90 % of the fans are not very familiar with. The not so familiar songs are a chance for people to catch their breath, go to the toilet and grab a drink. To be honest a 3h+ show is probably too long for some people, but I am grateful that my favorite band makes such good and long concerts...

Well, as we know, the show is great. But in order to give the fans who buy tickets something different each time they go see them, there's no shame in trying something different. Some would be happy to see the same show every time the band comes to town, others wish for a mix of the familiar from the last show with some new surprises thrown in.

I understand both sides. I see a lot of fans who won't even attend any shows wish for changes. Which is a little weird, but I guess also a compliment that they care that much about what is performed at shows they won't even attend.

Obviously different, but we are talking about 200 people max at a certain concert, that have seen the same concert earlier on the tour. Jarmo included :hihi:
On every different tour we get a couple of different/new songs that haven't been played earlier.
Since 2006 (my first concert) i got to hear these additional songs:
2010: CD, Sorry, This I love, Rocket Queen, Don't cry, IRS and Whole lotta Rosie, DJ
2011: Estranged, Shacklers revenge, dead flowers, used to love her, Motivation, Civil War, Patience
2018: Slash and Duff, Double talking Jive, Slither, Shadow of you love, New rose, Yesterdays, Coma, Wichita Lineman, wish you were here, Black hole sun, The seeker
2022: Reckless life, Back in black, I wanna be your dog, Absurd, hard school, You're Crazy

I’m reading on various forums that the tour ain’t selling so well. Whole rows (heck even sections in some places) are not sold. Kinda seems like the reunion has lost its shine in terms of fan interest. Sad but possibly true.

I’d imagine as we get closer the bigger venues like MetLife will get close to sellout like 2021. But tbh was hoping for arena run like MSG, etc. better venues to see them. I’ll be at Hershey and MetLife tho.

Not any new music (yet)...

For now, any setlist wishes? They have included more and more songs over the years, this time around I'm hoping they'll bring back Breakdown and Pretty Tied Up.

Maybe reducing to 2 hour shows? Could maybe open up for more variety between the sets?

I’m reading on various forums that the tour ain’t selling so well. Whole rows (heck even sections in some places) are not sold. Kinda seems like the reunion has lost its shine in terms of fan interest. Sad but possibly true.

I checked up on some of the more popular US shows last night.  Lots of tickets still available.

Could run that GNR race car again.

I'm not too worried about it.  Looked like they had enough not to have to cancel.  There's last minute sales too.  I keep thinking they have something big to attract attention but then again probably not.  I'm not sure what they can do after the announcement went out.

Anyway, I assume Jarmo is getting ready to go to work.  Not work when you love what you do.   :D  Wishing him good times and smooth sailing.

Not sure what I'm doing about streams.  I'll try to catch a few of the first ones.  Incredibly busy for a woman of leisure.  They hunt for them over at MyGNR if I'm not around.

Ive seen the band 6 times since 2016 and every show they played a song ive never seen them do before.
Thats a big reason why im still going to multiple shows.
That said this might be the first time in a long time im settling for 1 show per european leg. Money is abit tighter this year.

Out of all the rumors and under the table info I've heard all these years, I've never heard the story of how you landed that job.  Someday you will have to share that story.  Bet it's exciting.

It all started with videos on MTV and buying Appetite.... Starting a fan site in 1996, going to shows and meeting people in 2006 and being offered to go on tour in 2009...

When do rehearsals start? Maybe we'll get an indication beforehand if Breakdown is seriously in contention.

An instagram picture from Slash of a banjo would be much appreciated :)

I'm sure the band has been rehearsing for some time already. First show is in a week.

His music is soft and cool, damn he recorded some great songs, I wish he had recorded more with GN'R.
That combination of elements, was perfect, that combination of elements made them wordly succesful and popular, until today.

I do not know too much about Richard, I am not a fan to be honest, but God bless him.

They could both tour together.

Anything is possible.

I just think Axl closed to possibilities.

Kind of surprised they announce Philly and it's another stadium.  Thought ticket sales weren't going that well.

Yeah, I was in the right state right?

I'm thinking you don't want to fuck around in the Middle East but you want Europe to know you're coming with a new show.  But if you really want to get them running, you introduce a new song at the first European show.  Later in the show, batteries are running out and just maybe it won't hit the internet right away.  Blow up the internet wanting to hear it, youtube police are knocking it down and you're just going to have to go to a show if you want to hear it.

New songs written by Izzy Stradlin have been played.

That demonstrates the importance of the compositions of the man.

That shows his compositions were really good, are really great!

Here's another way to look at it.

Axl and Slash straight HATED each other for almost 20 years.  But they were able to patch it up for the greater good.

Izzy can't seem to get there.  Is that on Axl, Slash, and Duff?

There is no band without Izzy.  His contribution is as unmatched as it is not in dispute.  Band MVP for me, right after Axl.

But he's been out of the mix since before Clinton was President.  I think it's safe to say that chapter is closed.

I'm not sure about that he played with GnR in 2012 on a few gigs so I wouldn't rule him out completely Axl and him were quite close for a long time and he's worked with Slash and Duff on various projects    now whether he wants to go back to a band that maybe hasn't the greatest memories for him is another question would been around them lead him back down a dark road that he wants to avoid would the constant touring be something that doesn't appeal to him? I know he said something about them not sharing the money equally but I always felt there was a lot more to it than that and he used that as an excuse not to do it.

GNR just ruins it for other bands in my world with the live performance.  Sat through the whole Dead show comparing them to GNR, just not cutting it tonight guys.  They even closed with Knocking on Heaven's Door.  My daughter, delighted, said they are covering GNR.   :hihi:
