Ya know , I seem to recall reading an article/interview with some very old bandmate of his , and they said when he 1st moved to L.A. he did use some other stage name.

Maybe my mind is playing tricks on me but I really seem to remember reading that.

He also used to spell his name Axel before he realised he could drop the "e" to make an interesting anagram from his name
Or he rearranged 'oral sex' to get 'axl rose'. easier don't u think?

His Native American name is Running In PLace.

From the 1989 MTV GN'R Rockumentary:

Axl: "Axl came along as the name of a band which my friend used to write down, my friend Dave Lank [?] wrote down the names of bands, him and Mike Staggs and Roger Miley [?] and we always thought the names of bands they had this page like hundreds of names of bands. One day they called me up they said 'We got a name for a band, Axle.' And like I don't know what was coming down at me at my house and it was like, I answered the phone and dude was like 'What d'ya want?' it was like 'We got a name for a band, Axle, how do we spell it?' I was like 'A.X.L.!' Click!"

I have heard of the "Babe" name as well.  I read it in a old book about them.  I can't remember the name of it though.
