Arrest warrant issued for lawmaker DeLay

HOUSTON (Reuters) - An arrest warrant was issued on Wednesday and bail set at $10,000 for former U.S. House Majority Leader
Tom DeLay ahead of his scheduled court appearance this week in Austin, Texas for money laundering and conspiracy charges, a Texas court clerk said.

The so-called "capias" was a "purely procedural event" but would require DeLay to turn himself into authorities to be fingerprinted and photographed, Travis County Grand Jury Clerk Linda Estrada said.

Court officials said DeLay was expected to go to Fort Bend County jail in his district near Houston for booking, but that had not been confirmed.

"To any sheriff or peace officer of the state of Texas, greetings, you are hereby commanded to arrest Thomas Dale DeLay and keep him safely so that you have him before the 331st Judicial District Court of Travis County," the warrant said.

DeLay has been charged with conspiracy and money laundering in a campaign finance scheme tied to his political action committee, Texans for a Republican Majority.

He has denied any wrongdoing, but is accused of laundering $190,000 in corporate campaign contributions through the
Republican National Committee for distribution to Republican candidates for the Texas Legislature in 2002.

Texas law forbids the use of corporate money in political campaigns.

He is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Friday before state District Judge Bob Perkins.

Neither a DeLay spokesman nor his lawyer was immediately available for comment.

Even if he is guilty of this, how is it worse than renting out rooms in the white house to japanese business man for campaign donations?  Slick Willy got away with it, DeLay should do the same.  The difference between Republicans and Democrats is that Republicans will be at least resign when they're caught.

Wasn't Delay heavily involved in the whole Clinton saga?  Funny how these Republicans wanted Clinton held to a high standard but then they don't expect the same standard to be applied to them.

He has a guy who is giving up state evidence to save his ass. Everything appears to be on paper, and this jackass is defiant until the end.

I am holding my breath for the leak case focused on Chenney and Rove. It is looking worse for those guys everyday. Although I doubt anybody big will take a fall. I'd love to see Rove retire though, and there has been mumbling of that around DC. Anybody who is exposed as an undercover CIA agent is guilty of treason and I hope they get hard jail time.

It is pretty obvious what went down IMO. There appears (like the Delay case) to be an insider who is ready to roll over to save his/her ass in regards to the leak. Rove has already said he would step down if things got to bad. That would be enough reason for me to go out and have a lobster dinner.

If that happens it will be a much bigger blow to the Bush administration than the affects of the war and Katrina combined.  Even though Bush won't be implicated, it will be IMO, almost as bad for him and his legacy as it was for Clinton to be impeached.

All I can say is that if there was ever a time for the democrats to take the house, senate and white house, it is now.  I cannot imagine a democrat not winning the white house in 2008 if this thing goes full blown (unless of course they are dumb enough to run Hillary).

What happens tp innocent until proven guilty?

These people have already been convicted.  If they get off, I'll bet many will claim it was just some conspiracy that got them off.


Personally, I would like to see them all go.  Everyone in Washington.  We need new blood leading this country.  Both parties are full of worthless pieces of shit on the most part.  It is evidence by the things that they find important.

Agree, Berkley, both parties are lost and the country is suffering from this.  I think it is time for another Revolution but more similar to the French, you know beheading all the leaders.  I think that may clean things up.....for awhile.
