Guns N' Roses guitarist DJ Ashba talks to Australia's Triple M about his girlfriend Nicky Whelan, Axl, Motley Crue, Nikki Sixx, Sixx:A.M., Neil Diamond and smoking in the shower.

4 March, 2011

He says regarding Axl:

Dj Ashba: The thing people don't know really about Axl -- I think everybody has a preconceived notion of who he is or what he is, and it's just funny to sit back and listen to what people really think of him because he's actually the nicest, one of the nicest guys I've met.  I think it's one of those things when you get to that level -- when you get that big that quick and for that long -- I think it's like anybody, Britney Spears, Michael Jackson when you get to that level, the media just loves to tear people down, no matter what you do, and it's unfortunate.  Bottom line is he's done more for this industry of music than most, and ever could ever dream of.

And should he win his case with Azoff, the industry will sit up and take notice, that the restrictive practices are there to be challenged by other artists too. Maybe, just maybe they'll come out and back Axl as its in their interest also that he win's, if he doesn't the industry will be super screwed as a result.

I love that DJ mentioned Axl & MJ in the same sentence! I feel the same way.

Why is he in Australia? Anybody know?

Maybe because his girlfriend Nicky Whelan is from there?

i know he wasn't comparing Axl to MJ and Britney but I don't think the media were far off the mark on MJ or Britney. Those two "invited' the paparazzi in and eventually got burned because of it. Jackson, even though  i love MJ, deserved the scrutiny he got with his court trials and weird behavior.

For me, Axl didn't start acting nuts like MJ and Britney, he just turned back into a normal guy at the height of his fame/popularity. nothing wrong with that.

...and what ends up happening unfortunately, is a-holes start making shit up.  Axl, being the cool guy he is, doesn't appear in the press every day to refute the bullshit.  Hence, the bullshit grows legs.  Hence, people start to believe the bullshit.
Hopefully, Axl's doing what makes him happy.
If we're lucky, that means he's creating more kick-ass music.

I never bought the Axl is a "Perfectionist" rhetoric and thats why it took so long.

I just think Axl understands GNR's legacy of amazing music and won't settle for nothing less whereas Duff/Slash kind of just put oout whatever sounds good enough at the moment.

That for me was the breakup. Axl wanted GNR to continue being GREAT whereas the rest of the band were content just putting out something as easy and as fast as possible.

Axl gets bad rap for being difficult when in reality he just wanted to live up to the high standards set by the band.

I kinda agree with this, but there's one facet missing from this.  The band (AFD version) wrote about their view of things as they were living them, Nighttrain, WTTJ, Brownstone, et al,  all confirm that. Move forward a decade and they had money, glamor and the trappings that go with it, the shine of doing another AFD wouldn't work in that period of time, I think Axl got that, the others didn't. Say what you like about the "lack of sales" CD had, the others by this measure have "flopped" even more....

If you look at the songs in CD, they aren't about pushers, muggers and other bods who exist in the Trailers Trash or lower levels in society. CD is more worldly than that, its more intelligent and more aware of the mental issues that drive people, well that's my take anyway.

^^hard to compare because of the huge GN'R b(r)and name which is significantly responsible for selling more than being released under a different band name.

"Bottom line is he's done more for this industry of music than most, and ever could ever dream of."  <--- thats the interesting part and has been my impression for some time aswell, by far not to that extreme though. its very cool but also slows things down in terms of music releases, which is what the general fan would want to hear: Axl singing.
