"Foods high in fat, salt or sugar are to be banned from meals and vending machines in English schools.
The ban, from next September, has been announced by Education Secretary Ruth Kelly at the Labour Party conference.

Vending machines in schools will not be allowed to sell chocolates, crisps or fizzy drinks, Ms Kelly announced.

The School Meals Review Panel next week will give details of the nutritional standards for ingredients to be allowed in school meals."

This is a pretty good idea.  They just need to get parents involved so that kids will be getting good food at school AND at home.

Getting rid of vending machines is a good start... but something also needs to be done about cafeteria food (based on my experiences in high school).  Healthy eating was definetaly not promoted at my school, and it should be considering the world's growing waistline.

I think that's an excellent idea. We are just starting to have vending machines over here in schools of Finland, and already talk of them being taken away has started. At least they should be taken away from schools that have children from lets say 7 to 16 or so attending them. After that a person should have a pretty good sense of what's healthy and what is not. But smaller children tend to eat... well, whatever tastes good, and what his/her friends are eating. Well, most of the children anyways. Some, of course, well.. dont.

At our school - all junk food is in the process of being banned from our tuckshop (canteen) and vending machines etc.  I guess it is a good idea, because Aus now has the 2nd largest obesity rate in the world!!!  nervous

Do we have a thread in The Jungle where we all agree on something?!  Shocked

There has been lots of talk about this in Australia for a while now.. not sure what's being offered these days though. Should help kids settle down a bit too in the classroom.

Nope - but you can get a veggie version.  I am (proudly) scottish and love haggis  -though lots of people wont eat it because of what its made of.  its offal and stomach inards of a pig, wrapped in the stomach lining of the pig.  You cook in oven and then slice open (its roughly the shape and size or a small rugby ball) and nosh away!  Tastes like a v peppery pate and has a grainy texture.  I would thoroughly recommend anyone trying it - the veggie option has no piggie parts - all grain and oats etc and quite nice too.

I've never tried it myself.

But it's kinda funny reading people knocking it because of its ingredients. Since some of the food we happily eat does contain all kinds of parts of the pig or cow that doesn't exactly sound so appetizing. What do you think "mechanically recovered meat" is?

I ate it and actually enjoyed it as a kid once..before I knew what it was.

Any cheap hot dog has even worse stuff in it. The visual of Haggis in a vending machine is funny.
