People stay on topic please.? No need to bring Slash back in the picture. He is not in GNR anymore.

Umm when he says that the new band plays the old songs better, that is on topic.

And if you think that the new GNR is better on the old songs than GNR ever was, you're fucking certifiably insane.

No knocks on the new GNR, the new stuff is great (TWAT IRS Maddy Blues) but when doing the old stuff, they are an okay cover band with the greatest frontman ever.

Couldn't have said it better myself.Don't get me wrong- i love the new band but they're nothing on the old band, when singing the old songs.

it's not memories of the old band. fuck em; they're dead. this band performs better than the old band could ever dream of doing.

the reason Axl has to cut back on the AFD songs is memories of Axl himself from 87-92. he just doesn't have that same charisma. the wild man on the edge thing that he did back then...which is fine. he's like 44 now. But he just doesn't run around and look like the "fuck you" guy anymore.

this band desperately needs to release Chinese Democracy and rely on THAT album for it's setlists in order to gain a shred of credibility...but more than that, Axl has to start relying on the work he's babied for so long to introduce us to middle aged Axl instead of trying, and failing (as any of us would do trying to relive our late 20s self at mid 40s) to be the old Axl.

of course you have to play paradise, scom, jungle, NR, YCBM....but quite honestly, i see no reason to play anything other than that from the old material...for Axl's sake. maybe nighttrain, cause it comes off the best of any of the old songs live, but that's it.

that's why it's touch and go whether this tour can work without at least a firm plan (other than "yeah, for sure in the fall) to release the album. right now, playing a couple new songs and relying on the old songs from the best rock album ever, this is an Axl Rose glamor project, even tho as a band, they just might be the best playing and sounding band in the world right now.

i mean, IRS and Better smoked. other than nighttrain, and taking into account horrific sound, those were the two best songs of the set. why? because we've all heard the others a billion times and seen Axl perform (if not sing) them better years ago. he needs to stick to playing the material from where his mid is at NOW rather than where it was as a badass 25 year old.
although I value opinions, this is pretty pointless because Axl is going to do what Axl is going to do, learn to live with it or move on and live the rest of your life with the great memories.

that's the point...the great memories are of a young, kilt wearing Axl ripping thru jungle or brownstone, pissing on everything in his way...those songs were written as that man's psychological profile...that man is now a middle aged singer who just isn't the same person anymore. i mean, out ta get me, tho it resonates with his critics and whatever, is ridiculous to be sung by a 44 year old man. our memories are of the young Axl ripping those songs, then he disappeared...so why come back on the strength of those songs?

I disagree. The truth? is in the eyes. Axl's eyes are alive again. In 1992, they were dead. He was performing on autopilot. Same in 2002. His eyes were dead. But now, he is energized and into the music, the show, the crowd. Axl is back, and the GNR community is all the better? for it. I have been, at times severe, critic of Axl on this board, for good reason, but now, wow, I am impressed and really happy to see? the band is back! GNR IS BACK!! (at least? this version of the band).

again, Axl as a singer and a performer are back; his voice sounds great...but Axl as a man who lays his psychosis out for all to see on stage is back in a different form than when he wrote out ta get me, nighttrain, brownstone etc....he just isn't the same person and the memories of him on stage from back then are hard, for me at least, to bury when hearing those old songs. the attitude of those songs WAS Axl in a kilt or in bike shorts screaming at the world, not Axl dressed in Cavalli silk shirts biding time until the new album comes out.

it amazes me how the reason the need to cut back on afd becomes a slash bash fest or why the old band sucks or something..

Some gnr fans on this board.. I disagree but without slash these guys wouldn't have the nr double solo or outro to play

old gnr were different, drug users crazy mother fuckers so sure they had off nights, but who didn't expect that.. Listen to axl in tokyo

new band did about 4-5 weeks of show in years with 8 players so they are really havin that lasting power

I don't know man, but I don't think Axl & Co are satisfied with how Paradise was played last night either... That intro was pretty fucked.

I think this discussion about old/new is ridiculous; it?s two different bands and the only that they have in common is the singer, the pianist and the old songs.
